Happy Friday! … and welcome to Cobs Lessons of Life. A snapshot of a week spent being taught certain lessons which we all run into from time to time – but I’m sharing my lessons with you so that you learn in a fun way, . . . and have a laugh at my predicaments. or even go away after reading this post feeling so much wiser and far more clever than you started out!
Regular readers may remember that last week I told you my tale of woe about having absolutely no electricity in my craft room. All the electrics went pop on Wednesday of last week and despite Mr. Cobs efforts, the electricity was no more.
Thankfully, my Super Hero: Electric Man, came Friday morning last week and managed to locate the problem, sort it out, and the magic which is electricity was restored!
But I still haven’t told you what caused the loss of electricity in my craft room yet.
I bet that you couldn’t ever guess what caused all the electricity to suddenly disappear in my craft room – not even if I gave you two weeks to come up with your best guess. But .. let’s give this a moment, and let you have one stab at what you think it might have been.
Go on… I’ll give you chance to make just one guess. Just one. Make it outrageous. See if you can guess.
Now let’s see how many of your were right ….
What caused my entire craft room to be plunged into the bleak dark ages of no electricity was … A WEB SITE. Yes, you really did read that correctly. Maybe I should be more specific so that you can picture how this loss of electricity occurred …. I lost all the electricity in my craft room simply because of a particular type of web site, more commonly known as . . . a spider’s web.
Yes, honestly truthfully. Honest to Dog. Cross my heart and all that stuff.
A spider had crawled into an electric socket and decided that he would make his home there. He’d spun himself a rather intricate web (my Super Hero Electric Man told me it was really quite pretty one). And it was this web which shorted out all of my electricity!
Can you believe it? No me neither. If this was anyone but my Super Hero (aka Chris) , I would have given them a shifty look which told them that I didn’t believe them. But Electric Man is brilliant. He doesn’t tell me tall tales. He also told me that it was something that he’d actually seen before! Along with he told me, slugs and snails which had crawled into sockets, and wiped out the power! And there was I thinking being a Super Hero was a glamorous job!
What else did I learn this week .…
- That I miss the funny people who were around (well-known folks of TV and Stand Up comedians on tours in theatres etc) in the 80’s and 90’s – such as Pam Ayres, Mike Harding, Brian Connolly, Robin Williams, Steve Martin, John Candy, Mel Brooks, Bob Newhart. Do I miss them … or is it that I miss the whole era when comedy wasn’t filled with filth, filthy words, and downright disagreeable subjects – all of which todays comedians seem to earn a fortune from injecting into their acts. I don’t understand it and can’t understand why people find it funny.
I also learned that …
- Harry Potter’s house is valued at £475,000 ($615,000) (The house where he lived with his uncle and aunt).
and . . .
- That I really like this blog and LOVE blogging. I’ve ‘met’ so many really lovely people because of this blog; and I’ve also learned tons by reading other blogs. Yes .. blogging, for me at least, is an experience I’ve found to be truly wonderful.
also . . .
- More than 200 UK drivers are at least 100 years old.
and …
- The best coffee can be found in our cottage, at 4pm every single day, especially after a tough day, a painful day, a miserable day, or just any ol’ day … and it’s made by Mr. C, – just to make me feel human again. ( what can I say? The guy’s brilliant. I got a good one.)
Oh ... and this one made my eyes stretch to the size of saucers:
- The ad executive behind the Nike slogan “Just do it” got the idea from the final words of condemned murderer Gary Gilmore. Ohhh, this made me feel like I didn’t want to ever buy Nike again. What a way to get a slogan!
And finally … I’ve learned that if I don’t get enough sleep, the sleep I do get is peppered with the strangest dreams, which ‘feel’ like it’s real and that the *things* actually really have happened. I need to get more sleep.
So … that’s what I’ve learned this week. Now it’s over to you. What lessons has life taught you this week? Not to spend so much money? That you won’t die if you eat some treat or other? The Art of Cobwebs 
Well,…. I guessed incorrectly. I had in mind a mouse having a fine time chewing on your wires. Web weaving sounds perfect for a craft room outage…..a very crafty spider.
I do agree on your feelings on the demise of good clean comedy. The husband and I have been watching reruns of the Andy Griffeth Show and Hogan’s Heroes.
Hmmmm…..new things I have learned: People seem to like trees, men are not compliant patients, and where the Nike slogan came from. (I just learned that one here and it just kind of blew me away. Don’t think I like it much.)
Oh, and yes, moms do seem to end up knowing best. Which makes me feel good as a mom cause I will end up knowing best 🙂 and maybe my sons will admit that!

Isn’t that funny …. when the mystery of what had erased Electricity from my craft room – which is actually in what was our detached garage and was converted and made into an art room. (doesn’t have any resemblance to a garage at all now). I had a guess what the Super Hero, Electric Man, was going to come back into the house and tell me had caused the problem … and like you, I guessed that a mouse had some how got into the electrical cables and chewed through one. When I heard that it was a spiders web .. my first thought was “oh goody – that’s easy to deal with then.” Followed by…. “A Spiders Web??? What the heck did that spider think he was going to catch inside a plug socket???” … I couldn’t believe that a spider would be THAT stupid! lol.
Moms really do know what they’re talking about. Kids today just need to cut out that middle section of thinking their parents are fools, and go straight to “Ok … I see what you’re saying, and you’re absolutely right.” … but putting my ‘regular mom’ hat on … I know they’re not going to take that advice either! lol
The comedy – nodding in agreement. I too have found myself watching re-runs of comedy shows from the 80/90’s just to have a dose of proper humour without all the offensive stuff and swear words.
We need to set up a march, pushing for really great, clever humour which offends no-one and entertains the majority. Here’s where it begins. Put your training shoes on … but not the Nike ones, eh?

A spider’s web knocked out your electricity? I have seen spiders scurry in and out of outlets in my home occasionally. I guess since the web caused the short that means that this specific spider web silk conducted electricity. I wonder if the spider expected that or gave his life in the effort? I will ponder this all day, Cobs! Happy Friday to you!

My Hero, Electric Man, found no signs of the spider himself, so we all came to the conclusion that he/she realised that he’d built his web was in a ‘low foot fall’ place, and found that flys just didn’t go into electric sockets. So he’d gone and found somewhere better to spin a web to catch his dinner!
You’ve seen them go into your electric sockets? I’ve never seen that, so naturally I thought at first that Electric Man was joshing with me … but he wasn’t.
Yes, Electric Man said that it created a short and blew the electrics.
It made sense to Mr. Cobs – who knows more about these things than I do. He said that’s why when he tried to get the electricity working again by throwing the switch on the consumer unit, this was why it was trying, but failing every time. (All I know is that I could hear the ‘clunk’ of the electricity shorting each time Mr. Cobs did the thing with the switch on the electricity box thingamajig in my craft room.
Happy Friday to you too Kathy. I hope you don’t end up as confused as I was … and to some extent still am. I cannot get my brain cell to see how the tiny threads of a spider web could cause such chaos. But … if I hear of anyone elses electricity doing the same thing … I’ll tell them to vacuum their sockets before they go to the expense of calling in an Electrician … just in case!

Cobs, yes, I have had to take the cover plate off electrical outlets to chase the spider with the vacuum cleaner. I can’t sleep (even hours later) if I have seen a spider and NOT gotten said spider (with my foot, a magazine, a vacuum cleaner).

Ooooo.. shuddering here at the thought!
Knowing there’s a spider in the room is now enough to send me into a melt down. (All because of the encounter a few weeks ago when I felt a spider on my back when I was in bed). I really thought I was going to have a heart attack – my heart was racing, pounding SO fast.)
So I’m with you in the chasing spiders with the vacuum.

No … just like you, I wasn’t sure my Super Hero was serious when he came into the house (where I was) and told me what had caused the electrical loss. He had to tell me three times before I would let myself believe it. lol.

Nike – ugh. What a horrible event to gain inspiration from. I suppose that means good can come from anything?
I have known for a long time that my mother knows best and is (almost) always right. She is a treasure!
For humor that is timeless, I watch M*A*S*H reruns. Those writers and actors were so good at what they did. And I agree – things don’t get funnier with the addition of swear words. But for humor in this era, I watch presidential debates. It can’t be real. It must be actors and writers.
What I learned this week – change is hard, but I am strong. Started a new eating plan, and am on day 5 of no artificial anything, no sugar, no caffeine, and no dairy- no kidding. What I miss the very most is my morning coffee, which I had already changed over to decaf, but which I still made delicious with some cream and sugar. But I am hanging in there. I can do this. It’s only for a month. I can do anything for a month. I think.

Ohhh, I’m filled with admiration of you Salpal. I couldn’t last a day on this regime that you’re following. I can’t function before my third cup of coffee in the morning. (Yes honestly. It really is THAT bad). If I have to go for a medical appointment at the crack of stupid, and I don’t get to have a coffee because there’s no time … I’ll be a right old misery guts until I’ve had some coffee – to the point of stopping off at a McD’s drive though just to buy a coffee! {hangs head in shame, as she darn well should!}.
M.A.S.H.!! Now THERE is a great example of humour, done in such a wonderful way. There is sometimes an implied bit of ‘naughty’, but it’s put over in such a way that it could be explained to a little one (who perhaps happened to be up, out of bed, needing a cuddle) as just something silly that the man said.
I want to go back to clean humour. Clever humour. Something more than a ‘knock, knock’ joke, but humour lacking in filth and swear words. We want FUN!
We should start a movement! I’ll find some long sticks, while you get the paints out. We’ll start by making banners. lol

If you had to do it, I bet you could. It took a week or two of slowly adding decaf to the coffee before I could get through the day without a headache, and I started that part back in July. So now it’s just getting out of the habit, I guess.
banners sound like a good first start. 🙂 We can do this. Yes, MASH had a way of being funny about naughty things without saying or showing anything, So it can be done….

Well it just had to be a cobweb really didn’t it ..even though I was going to go with a mouse, I sure know what you mean about the classic comedies.
I didn’t know about the Nike slogan if it ever comes up in a quiz I’m ready LOL
Now what have I learned this week …there are not enough hours in the day, just what 3 keys were for on the works sets of keys ~ oh and K9 can carry a sugar beet the size of his own head,

Nike slogan: I actually thought the very same thing when I found out about it. PUB QUIZ! I’m just hoping now that it’s one of the questions that come up … ’cause my one brain cell is hanging onto that one in the hope of impressing … well … anyone really.
Oh .. an K9 … really can carry anything he wants. Look at the size of that chap. He’s a HUNK! (an’ I loves him). ❤

Who knew spiders could be so destructive? I hope he found a new home which was a bit less in the way. I learned that jobs are like buses, nothing and then 3 come along at once and you have to let people down. I also learned (though I probably knew already) that helping people makes you feel far better than leaving them to struggle when you have the skills and knowledge to share. Finally, I also learned that eating cake the night before slimming world weigh in is a terrible plan. I’m glad your craft room is back in business again, your Friday posts are fab. X x

Cobs, was the spider alright after he shorted out all of your electrics? I presume he just left the socket without leaving a forwarding address! Coincidentally, I was listening to Pam Ayres the other day. Funny lady!

Hello Tom.
There is no news on the Spider. When my Super Hero, Electric Man, investigated, there was no spider to be found.
I’m thinking that maybe he (the spider) is the arachnid version of James Bond. His mission is to help Super Heroes earn more money befor Christmas, by shorting out as many electrical sockets as possible.
Not sure what’s in it for him (the spider) but there must be a very good pay off, for him to put himself in such danger.

I could have guessed all day about the cause of your electrical problems and I would never have thought it was a spiders web but it really is very fitting.
You are right, there is not easy to watch comedy programs on anymore and I miss that. Things get discarded as naff but sometimes obvious and simple humour is best.
I’m not sure I learned anything this week. Hmmmmmmm. Well I did managed to teach my daughter how to use her violin bow (she has only started learning in the last 3 weeks) and she was smiling at the end with her achievement so maybe I have more patience than I thought (and she didn’t see my gritted teeth with some of the initial attempts).
Nope that’s it. I can’t think of anything else but the week has flown by. I love your weekly round ups – they are always such fun to read.

Ahh .. you did learn something this week though Hannah. You learned to listen, even though what you were listening to was something akin to fingernails down a blackboard.
You learned patience in the face of something you wanted to run to the next room from.
You learned that the teaching your gave her had some great results.
And … you learned that you made one little girl so happy, that she was smiling by the massive (to her) achievement she’d made and the obsticles she’d over-come.

Well I would never have guessed. Rather electrifying news that a little beastie could cause so much havoc. Oh, and what about the slugs and snails. I am so pleased you have all of these super heros around. First the post man and now the electrician. Are there any houses for sale in your road? In the area would do! We were talking the other night about missing good old TV. Things move on though I suppose. Such a shame. Except for Mr. Bean. He drove me to distraction.

Aw if you’re going to come back go for something in Sandbanks Flo. (But you might have to break open the piggy bank to buy one. lol) Some of those are absolutely beautiful. But there are a handful which are a little ‘modern’, for which read: futuristic. Not my cup of choice, but everyone has different tastes.
TV … yes I miss the good old stuff which was really great entertainment. And I agree with you regarding Mr. Bean. It was funny when it was the first outing … but after that first outing the joke just didn’t hit the mark anymore.

Well Cobs, spiders obviously sought vengeance from whence you tried to evict his uncle from the bathroom! Tricky little blighters aren’t they! I definitely agree about being careful with the nutters too, there is 100% one in the car with me every day, stares at me from the rear view mirror, one day I will get her! Have a brilliant week x
