World Down Syndrome Day 2018

Today, Wednesday 21st March,  is World Down Syndrome Day.  #WDSD18  World Down Syndrome Day is celebrated on the 21st of March every year.  

Down’s Syndrome is caused by the presence of an extra chromosome in a baby’s cells. In the majority of cases, Down’s syndrome is not an inherited condition. Down’s syndrome usually occurs because of a chance happening at the time of conception. 

A lady called Rebecca Carless,  from Coventry in the UK,  joined together with 49 other mothers from an online Down’s support group known as “Designer Genes“, to make a special video ahead of World Down’s Syndrome Day,  celebrating children with Down’s syndrome.   They made a carpool karaoke type lip sync video featuring those 50 mums and their children all singing along to Christina Perri’s multi-platinum selling track, “A Thousand Years”.  #RebeccaCarless   #wouldntchangeathing

The video was originally inspired by ‘Singing Hands‘ – a UK organisation whose videos have helped many in the group learn Makaton – which is a form of sign language (which you’ll see in the video)  – and one close to my heart as Little Cobs, in his very early years, had a problem letting us know what it was he was trying to tell us, so we all made an effort to learn Makaton in order to help both him and us.

The mums all got together to show the world just how ordinary and fun  life with the condition is and how they “Wouldn’t Change a Thing“.

I’ve seen this video of the song many times over the past couple of days, and seen various snippets of it on news programmes, morning TV and afternoon TV, and I’ve sought out the video on YouTube in order to share it,  – and  every  single  time   I’ve watched it,  I’ve (without fail) dissolved into floods of tears.  Not of sadness, but love and joy about how fabulous and wonderful those little dots of incredibleness truly are, and how much love and pride pours out of the mums who are singing and signing with their children.

Hello. I'm 'Cobwebs'. I live in a wee little cottage in the South of England, aptly called Cobweb Cottage. This little dwelling really is a cobweb factory. Card making; scrap-booking; producing ATC's and ACEO's; needle felting; Polymer clay; painting- but in a more relaxed style than I had before, and sewing, - are all things which I visit, as and when life allows. I've fairy recently become a Textile Artist and am enjoying this new creative outlet very much as it offers me so much scope for letting my imagination run through a grassy field and feel the wind in my hair - (mentally, of course).     1. … and if you decide at some point to watch it again, I predict you’ll need a tissue again. My heart just cannot stop making rainbows of love fall from my eyes, caused by that video.

  4. A friend of mine, Sheila, whom also used to cut my hair till she moved, she has a lovely boy, must be 9 by now, all smiles. I could see them in a video like this, how special. We know a few families that have kids with Down’s Syndrome and they are just fine in my books. Lovely kids and lovely parents, hearts of gold and a smile to match.

    1. Hello Sue. Lovely to hear about your friend who has now sadly moved. If you know the area that she’s moved to you might be able to find her via a search on the internet or Facebook.

      A bit like you I’ve come into contact with Downs children and I can honestly say that I’ve fallen in love with each and every one of them.

      I have no problems with anyone with any type of ‘disability’ (hate that term). The only difference between all of us is that some folks are less able in some things than others.

      I can’t lay bricks or spread cement, but that doesn’t make me any the less useful than any other person. People who are less able in some areas are just as valuable as any other person, it’s just that their talent lies in a different place or direction.

      I’m over-joyed that you enjoyed the video Sue. The love, joy and pride captured in the video is almost tangible isn’t it.

        1. Thank you for sharing it Mary. It was made in a really easy going way and they didn’t ever envisage it being as widely viewed as it is. Millions of people around the world have now seen it, which is such a brilliant thing.

          Those mums were expecting to teach their child about the world … but instead they’ve ended up teaching the world about their children, and I think they’re amazing.

          Like you, they’ve settled into my heart too. It’s a great feeling.

  8. Absolutely beautiful! Thank you so much for sharing Cobs. I had a cousin who was a special needs person. She was not Downs but still her life touched so many. When she passed away two years ago, her mom was amazed at how many people came to the funeral. A real testament to the full life special needs children and adults do live.

      I’m so sorry to hear of the loss of your cousin. She must have left an empty space in the hearts and lives of many.

      Throughout my life, so far, I’ve found that each and ever less abled person I’ve come into contact with has enriched my life personally.
      I remember when I was 18 and on being pushed by my mum, I became an Avon Lady in the area where we lived. Through this ‘thing’ that I did twice a month either in the evenings or on Saturdays, I came into contact with three Special Needs people. One was a ‘boy’ in his mid twenties, who lived with his mum and dad.

      Another was a young girl of 8 who spent a lot of time with her Grandma, and the third person was a young downs syndrome lady who lived alone in a little house, next door to her parents. It was a brilliant set up and one which touched me greatly.

      Each of these lovely people taught me more than school could have ever taught. They changed me in ways that I didn’t realise I needed changing, and I truthfully believe that I was destined to meet these three beautiful hearted human beings in order for me to be given an understanding about something I knew nothing about, and I’ll be forever thankful for it.

      I’m so happy that you liked the video Chicken. I know that it’s been seen by millions of people around the world, but I wanted to bring it to some people who I knew might very well not have seen it.

  10. Oh thanks for sharing! We had a Downs Syndrome neighbor when I grew up and he was truly a special person. I also was lucky enough to babysit for another Downs Syndrome child in our neighborhood. They are truly God’s little angels given to us to remind us of how special each one of us are. Loved it Cobs! 🙂

  12. I’m a mother too. I met a friend who introduced me to his son Tyreese. My heart melted. I wrote and dedicated my poem to Tyreese and our special Michael. Please read it and know that our angels are gifts. People who stare at rude and emotionally poor.
