The Church Moth ~ textile art by Cobwebs

Did you know that there’s SO little difference between Moths and Butterflies that [in the great, humongous, majority of cases] they’re actually all Butterflies?!

Yes, I know – it’s unbelievable isn’t it… however, it’s true.

You can have bright, vivid colour moths, just as you can have rather dull looking butterflies. There are heaps of day mothsthat is – moths who like being around and flitting, flying during the daytime hours – in fact there are more day-time moths in the UK than there are butterflies. But there are also Butterflies who like to fly at night.

There’s heaps more I could tell you which you might not know – but instead of me blathering on, I’ll give you a link at the end of this post so that those of you who would like to know more can click and the link will open up for you.

But now … … onto the crafty reason of my post today….

I’d like to introduce you to….

The Church Moth.

Maany moons ago, I got acquainted with a moth which wore glasses. Well, not actual real glasses (or spectacles), but he had a colouring around his front end (face) which made him look like he was wearing glasses. This moth was called a ‘Spectacled Moth’. (Which I didn’t know – I had to research it to find out what the dickens it was.). I’ve found a couple of photographs on the web, so that I could share this moth with you….

The Spectacle Moth. – Photograph by Robert Thompson @ naturepl.com

The memory of that amazing moth obviously stuck with me, for when I came to designing this fabulous moth which I’m sharing with you today, I knew I wanted to make a moth which wore spectacles.

I began by choosing fabrics from my stash, and the beautiful fabric I chose for the main wings instantly gave me the name of the Moth I was going to create. I said it out loud as it came into my head: “The Church Moth!”. It was the perfect fabric pattern for a Church Moth for it had a sort of stained glass window effect to it. It’s a tapestry style, but soft feel fabric which I had a smallish piece of – it was so perfect!

I drew, and made a pattern, cut, and snipped, and pinned and sewed. I inked and stained some of the fabrics. Then I stitched, and hand sewed, attached and applied, then … I stopped and held up the incredible creation which I had in my hand, and looked and then said quietly but out loud, … “Ohhh, bless him! Isn’t he perfect!…..” ~ I loved him from the tips of his antennae to the end of his tail.

Then I fiddled and made, then made again, and again, until I finally managed to produce a pair of beautiful rose gold glasses. I popped them on his nose to check the fit. I’m absolutely convinceed I heard him exclaim with delight that he would finally be able to see the words in the hymn books! He seemed terribly excited.

Can you see his rose gold spectacles?

Of course … that wasn’t the end of the Spectacled Church Moths creation … I had to finish him off with a bit of flair and fuss ….

He had to have lace on the underside of his wings, as well as the tops – because all the best dressed Men of the Cloth had special robes which had lace on them somewhere – so obviously this Church Moth simply HAD to have lace too! (He also has his Union Flag (aka Union Jack) button, which shows he was born in England!)

The gentle feathering around the edges of his wings, is a nod to the feathering which most moths (and butterflies) have on and around their wings. And …. It seemed right to have the feathers around the edges of his wings, for I felt that he would (naturally) help with the upkeep of the church in which he lived, so he would help with the dusting by fluttering his wings, which would brush away any dust which dared to lay upon any surfaces within his church.

Every church should have a church moth like this one. Don’t you agree?

Here’s a link so that you can go and take a peep at more photo’s of the Spectacled Moth. https://butterfly-conservation.org/moths/spectacle <— Click – it will open in a new tab for you.

AND … here’s the link I promised you at the beginning of this post, so that you can read about the differences (or rather lack of differences) between Butterflies and Moths https://butterfly-conservation.org/news-and-blog/what-is-the-difference-between-butterflies-and-moths <— click – it will open in a new tab for you.

Well that’s me done and dusted…. oh hang on, NO! WAIT!!!

I’m forgetting the . . .

This is a ‘sorry I’m later than I should be’ Monday post, bought to you by a busy inside her head female who no longer knows what day it is because every day is the blinking same as every other flippin’ fluffin’ day!!! grrrr!

I think I need a secretary who will remind me every hour, on the hour, what the date and day it is. [sigh] Applications for the job are now being taken. Please use the comment box as your application and let me know your qualifications. Oh … and tell me what you will bring to the job such as chocolate and cake.

Thank you so much for coming, and for having a coffee moment with me.  I love seeing you here.

As always. . .  I love your company and adore chatting with you, so please say a few words or more, in a comment so that I know who I’m chatting to!  Let me know what you think.  Let me know what’s going on in your life.

I hope you had a magnificent Monday, whatever you did, and that you have a truly blessed, wonderful week.  Sending much love to you along with a huge bunch of squidges.

Author: The Art of Cobwebs - aka:- thecobweboriumemporium

Hello. I'm 'Cobwebs'. I live in a wee little cottage in the South of England, aptly called Cobweb Cottage. This little dwelling really is a cobweb factory. Not inside (well, occasionally) - but outside - flipping heck! This information should give you a clue as to why my blog is called The Art of Cobwebs aka: The Cobweborium Emporium. I've been arty and crafty from a very young age, and although my crafts have sometimes turned a corner and taken me in another direction, I've always crafted in some way, shape or form. One day, in the blink of an eye, life changed somewhat for me and the consequences were many. I had to find a new way of being 'artistic'. Card making; scrap-booking; producing ATC's and ACEO's; needle felting; Polymer clay; painting- but in a more relaxed style than I had before, and sewing, - are all things which I visit, as and when life allows. I've fairy recently become a Textile Artist and am enjoying this new creative outlet very much as it offers me so much scope for letting my imagination run through a grassy field and feel the wind in my hair - (mentally, of course). I love to create. To make things. I truthfully believe that the best gifts in the world are those in which you've given your time, rather than your cash. Thank you so much for visiting. Please visit my blog (link below) and have a look around. I'm sure you'll find something to enjoy, even if it's only a handful of jokes! (yes, seriously - there really are jokes!) Wishing you a truly blessed rest of your day! ~ Cobs. <3

  1. He is so cute Cobwebs! Such marvellous fabric magic you have once again woven.
I used to be a PA, so have the necessary qualifications, just wouldn’t be any use to you cos I forget what day, month and year it is too. Especially since this COVID thing hit xx

    1. Hello Karen.
This Covid/Coronavirus is brain busting! I used to have my finger on the button and knew the day, date, month, year and what the rate of the pound (British pound) was …. now, I’m pushed to remember my date of birth!

Aw, I’m thrilled to bits that you like the Church Moth. Thank you so much Karen.
I hope your week goes swimmingly well, and that you don’t forget where you live, if you happen to venture out for groceries or some such this week. :o)

With all that’s going on I don’t know where I am half the time. Have a good week lovely lady xx

        1. Hello Karen
I’m so sorry to hear that you’re in the ‘at risk’ group, but content that this group is keeping you safer.
Like you, I’m using on-line shopping too, but it’s Tesco’s for me.
I do go out roughly once a week, but for no longer than about 45 mins, just so that I get out from the four walls of home. However, I have to admit that I’m disappointed (read ‘thoroughly cross’) by how lackadaisical people have become about keeping a safe distance. grrr!

Aww, you’re not knowing where you are half the time – I can relate. I seriously don’t know what day it is – and that’s all the time. I started to think I’ve got alzheimers – but since everyone else is feeling the same way, I’m thinking that it’s the way we’re all having to live at the moment.

Sending you much love, Karen – along with a whole bundle of safe distancing squidges. ~ Cobs. xxx ❤

Fruitcake will be very welcome, but I need it to be the eatable type. lol.

Ohh, I’m so tickled to hear that you like The Church Moth! He’s such a delight to look at and hold in the hand. I don’t think he’ll be with me forever, but I’ll have the delight of being his home, until he finds his forever home. But I shall miss him when he leaves, because he looks so right at home here.

Thank you so much for coming Kim, and for taking the time to leave such a fabulous comment. I shall be on the lookout for you arriving – but please don’t forget the cake! LOL

  3. Oh what an adorable butterfly. I have the perfect place for him to rest….(hint)! I so enjoy your posts…I always learn something new which is always important! What fun it would be to be your “secretary”. Do you pay travel expenses????? I’m afraid it is a little far to travel every day, but I would so love to give it a try! I’ve never been over the Atlantic, just in it. I think you and I would have such a time creating so many things….and probably giggling a lot! I would most definitely bring chocolate and a cake or two….I made a Carmel Apple Pound Cake on Saturday and there is NONE left!!!! We did go to my sister’s mother-in-law’s for dinner and there were 9 of us (one of us just a small adult – age 6) but to eat an entire bundt cake after a delicious meal…..hmmm. I already have requests to make it again. I think you would love it! Or, maybe some baked fudge???? Do you like nuts? I could make it either way. Well, I must be moving on tonight….I have several things I need to get done…so glad I stopped by! You made my Monday!

    1. Hello Nancee … CAKE!!
      YOU’VE GOT THE JOB!

Aw that family gathering sounds brilliant, and how fabulous that your whole Caramel Apple Pound Cake was eaten, crumbs and all! (My mouth is watering at the thought).

Baked Fudge … I’M IN! I cannot resist fudge. Where I used to live (130 miles away from where we live now) there was an amazing sweet shop which sold handmade sweets which were AMAZING! The place was an eye popper, and people would go in but take an age to decide what they would buy because it was as if the shop put an enchantment spell on people as they walked through the door. But for me .. the enchantment was the fudge counter. Oh. My. Good. Garden. Cabbage!!! Fudge of all types, and I wanted them all. I would only visit the store once every 6 months (roughly), and only allowed myself to buy one type of fudge – so I had to carefully pick the right one for that purchase. I don’t think I had a favourite exactly (because they were all SO good) – but I did have some special moments with their white chocolate fudge. Hmmmmmm yummy!

Nuts – I’ll pass on. But you can include fruit of any type. I’m an utter pig for fruit!

Aw thanks for coming Nancee. It’s fabulous chatting to you – and about FUDGE – how could this get any better!

Have a terrific Tuesday, my lovely friend. Stay safe out there.

  4. Another masterpiece. Do you still have a moth or two or a butterfly hanging around your cottage? Here they have all but disappeared and even the hummers have gone on vacation. I do love all of them and especially the blue butterflies and the yellow ones. I’m working very hard to prepare a bed for a cutting garden and hopefully the pollinaters (sp) will be happy next Spring.
Now we have another storm coming our way so outside work will be put on hold for a while but the temps have been wonderful for outside work. I know I should get back to the craft room but….in time in time.
Keep the artistic juice flowing….you are on a and I am in awe.

    1. Hello Beverly! :o)
The Moths and Butterflies outside have, at least for now but maybe longer, all tucked themselves safely in their homes and wrapped themselves up warmly while they toast their toes by the fire.

The weather here at the moment is horrible. Continual rain and winds, and it’s very cold too. Not good for arthritis or those illness’s which dislike cold, wet weather. I actually gave in and put our central heating on last week. Hugo is VERY happy about it, because he’s a heat seeking missile and loves the soft bed by the radiator in the living room. Bless him.

Ah, getting back in the craft room…. The craft room will be there when winter sets in. You’ll be full of ‘get going’ then, and you’ll delight us with your creations.

So happy that you like the Church Moth. I like him too. He makes me smile.
Thank you for coming Bev. I love chatting with you.

      1. I will look for a moth if we ever get back inside the church. We are having services outside still! Last Sunday I wore a sweater and a jacket, and I had a throw to cover my legs. Brrr! We had a bird fly among us.

  5. Who would have thought a moth could be so utterly charming, wise and absolutely gorgeous, and those glasses are just amazing & the cutest thing EVER
Alas I won’t be throwing my hat into the secretary ring ~ I’m notorious at The Workplace for never knowing the date (mostly I have a handle on the day ….just) as for the year let me tell you I was overjoyed when 2020 swung round as I can type that with aplomb, little were we all to know what a ticking time bomb was waiting in the wings when this year started.
While I may not make secretary of the year, I can rise to the challenge of ‘Excellent Work Colleague’ I can whisper in hushed tones while important phone calls are in progress, I ALWAYS know just where the best biscuits are hidden … not that we hide biscuits – obviously that would be plain rude and just in case you were wondering I have a stash of pens, pencils, a handful of paperclips plus 3 treasury tags (just in case anyone may be in the market for a treasury tag) in case I’m running a close 2nd I have access to a Little Miss Trouble & Best Grandma mug, dependent on how the day is panning out is crucial to which mug your morning coffee will be served in.
Good luck on the interviews and may The Church Moth always be a reminder of how beautiful nature is in her wisdom xx

    1. Hello dearest, much loved, P.
You said: “I was overjoyed when 2020 swung round as I can type that with aplomb,” …. yerrrs…. I was fine and groovy with 2020 – I mean to say, how could you get two x 20 wrong? It was easy peasy.

Then we got three months into the new year and I heard myself saying to himself: “It’s 2012 isn’t it. It is, isn’t it? It’s 2012. Twenty Twelve…. that’s right isn’t it. Yes… I know it is, silly brain cell!”

And from there all hell broke loose inside my noggin! Lockdown began, and I’m still living in March… and apparently it’s 2012. Hence the reason I need a sensible person to make sure I’ve got a bra on before I go out of the house, for currently I’m now wearing these ‘comfort tops’ – like a sports bra but waaaaaay comfier. Sooo soft that I swear they’re made from knitted clouds. (But … they hold things in place, so I’m quite happy).

I used to be a PR officer, and had my finger on the pulse. Knew what day, date, time, place, where, when, how, and who …. everything.
If my colleagues could see my all day brain farts now they’d be killing themselves laughing. [sigh]

Currently, it’s going to be the cat (Alf Capone – Used Furniture Dealer) who gets the job, because I have an unending supply of his required salary – I have his favourite cheesy ‘Dreamies’ (cat treats) – which he loves, and will do almost anything for. Bless him. Other cat, Masie Dotes …. she won’t do anything for anyone, for any reason, no way, no how. She’ll be the cat who will eat my face if I pass away in the house and no one feeds her.

Aw tickled pink that you like the Church Moth. Those glasses were a bit of a trial, but I persevered and was determined that it wasn’t going to get the better of me. However … I did have to leave it 24 hours between one lot of tries, and the next lot. I also found out I know words that I didn’t realise I knew.

Ah … anyhoo … Have a wonderful … erm… Wednesday? Thursday? Saturday? Friday? December?
Have a wonderful day TOMORROW, and a great rest of your week. (whatever month it is). lol

  6. The church moth is so beautiful. That fabric really does resemble stained glass and those tiny little glasses are so cute. It’s no wonder you can’t keep track of trivial things like what day it is. Your mind is filled with such creativity.
The cake I made two days ago was a flop so I am baking chocolate chip cookies today to make up for it.
I love the cartoon with the guy wearing the dog cone. Have seen it before but it cracks me up every time. 🤣

  7. Fabulous Church Moth, Cobs! Love the wings and glasses! I had some of those white butterflies fluttering by recently, when it was sunny, but for the past few days they’ve all gone to wherever they go when it rains buckets. I got soaked today walking around the corner… and doubly soaked walking back to the car when I decided driving was a better option.
Now, your position. I make a mean loaf in the breadmaker, if you like fresh bread. Can’t make a cake for toffee, but shops sell almost fresh ones, if that’ll do. I forget what day it is, but always make sure when it’s the first of the month, which may come in useful if you start a project each month. I’m organised to a point, and then chaotic after that.
“Is it Wednesday today?” is a question you’ll never hear from me, as I only work four days a week. Thursday is my Friday and Wednesday becomes Thursday. Tuesday is still Tuesday, and Monday is that day after the weekend. Sunday has its own feel, and Saturday is simply marvellous. And with Friday being my first day of the weekend, I couldn’t possibly forget that. Dates, though, I’m really bad at. I’m still in last week, a bit like our latest virus figures, only with a simpler level of confusion. So… me? PA?
Squidges, Cobs. I’m now going for my beauty sleep. Being permanently 24 has its disadvantages…🙂😊

    1. Hello Tom.
Firstly … my apologies for the lateness of my reply to your fabulous comment. I actually typed out a reply first thing this morning, and obviously touched something on my keyboard and wiped the whole darn reply out in the blink of an eye! Furious doesn’t come into it. grrrr.

You said, regarding butterflies, in your comment: “but for the past few days they’ve all gone to wherever they go when it rains buckets” …. Ahh, I know the answer to this (cause I’m a smarty pants today – me bwain is working) – they hide under leaves or at the bottom of clumps of grasses, so that they don’t get beaten by the rain drops!.

Aww sorry to hear about you getting an unscheduled shower from Mother Nature … dontcha hate getting soaking wet and then having to sit in the car in wet clothes! Mighty uncomfortable.

The position of PA/get the woman in some sort of order Assistant. You are scoring a point for baking bread (even in a breadmaker. Fresh breach is fresh bread!). You can’t make cakesbut you save yourself because you will buy cakes … ANOTHER POINT!

However … you loose those valuable points because you’ve re-arranged the days of the week and now I don’t know what day is which and which day is where! Lost all those points. I’m bad enough by myself, but add your arrangement into the mix and I’m lost for good!

Right at this moment, Alf Capone (Used Furniture Dealer) – cat, is winning the position, and I have the perfect payment plan for him, because I have the thing which is like gold dust to him … cheesy flavour Dreamies (cat treats). He loves them, and will do anything for them. But … I don’t think he knows anything about days of the week – so I’m not convinced that he’s the right man for the job.

I hope you got plenty of beauty sleep and that you woke feeling refreshed and ready to get through whatever day it is in your world. May your tomorrow be a very excellent one and may the blue bird of joy and happiness fly over you, and not cr*p on your car windows. :o)

I’m fine and groovy. I’m trying to spin plates and juggle at the same time – at least that’s what it feels like. Trying to do Christmas gift shopping, and Birthday present shopping, and make Christmas Cards and deal with another lock-down whilst trying to grocery shop but preferring to stay safely at home…. aww, the list is blinking endless.

No, didn’t receive an email … oh, hang on, did you send it to my personal email address? The private one I gave you? If you sent it to the one connected to this blog then it could easily have been missed, with all the rubbish and spam which is sent to it. I’ll go and check and see if I can find your email in that email address. But I definitely haven’t received an email at my private email addy – I check that one two or three times a day, and haven’t received anything there.

Hope everyone in your family is doing well and no one has or is suffering with this Virus which we’re all living with.

  9. Just letting you know that I amended the video I sent you to Private so that only you will see it. I originally left it as public so you would see the thumbnail and know it wasn’t from a dogdy geezer. Now it’s been made private, I think the thumbnail will disappear, so it may look a bit odd. Ah, I really struggle with looking at moths! My eyes really cannot bear what they see. I know they’re God’s creatures, but for some reason I find them absolutely gross. I have forced myself to stare at your live pictures several times but they still make my toes curl. I agree that they are butterflies, because if I see a brown butterfly coming towards me, I scarper. A colleague of mine used to call them ‘cigars with wings’. I can’t say that helped a great deal, ha ha! I love your fluffy creation though. It’s helping me get my head around the fact that some people see them in the way they are supposed to be seen. Well done you! xxx

    1. Hello!
Aw thank you for letting me know about the video link.
I can understand your dislike of moths. I’m not keen on spiders – so although not the same thing, I ‘get’ the creepiness of you seeing moths.
If you see ‘Moth’ in the title or if you do a ‘search’ on the page, using your computers ‘find’ – you’ll be able to completely miss anything that mentions ‘moth’.
Thanks again for the message! Take care ~ Cobs.x
