Come with me, and you’ll be in a world of pure imagination . . .

That was the first line of one of my most favourite songs from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

Last week I shared with you an altered, little Altoids (mints) sized tin for which I’d created a ‘Little bit of Dorset in a Tin’ – which was a [sort of] diorama inside a tin.

If you missed the blog post I paste a link here:-   A little bit of Dorset in a little Tinwhich, if you click on it, will open up in a new page for you.

I created that little tin for a friend of Mr.Cobs, who’s coming for a visit in a few weeks time.

Mr.Friend told Mr.Cobs on the phone that he rather fancied a trip to somewhere called Brownsea Island  –  which is here in Dorset where we live, but it’s an island all by itself and you have to board a boat to get to.

I wanted to make Mr.Friend something of a souvenir but couldn’t think of anything about Brownsea Island which I could work into a souvenir, so instead, I chose a famous lighthouse here in Dorset,  – and the Little Tin I shared last week had Portland Bill  Lighthouse inside the Little Tin.

Funny thing was …  two days later, just as I was dropping off to sleep in bed … a stray thought popped into my mind which woke me up, and in that moment a plan formed.  That plan is the little bit of fun that I’ve come to share with you now.

Brownsea Island is probably most famous all around the world for the ‘invention’ of the Scouts, for Brownsea Island is where is all began.  My sleepy brain remembered this and led me to an idea which would be the perfect thing to give Mr.Cobs Friend, instead of the Portland Bill Lighthouse!  So …  this is what happened after the brain cell gave me the vision. . .

The English penny in the above photo, (to the left, at the bottom)  is for a kind of size reference.  It measures roughly 18mm and so almost the same size as an American dime

I thought that perhaps I could do a little research and see if I could find any details about what the first Scout boys had used by way of tents – style and colour etc.  I found enough information to tell me to make the classic upturned V style of tent, in a kind of khaki colour, and that’s what I created from some clay.

brownsea Island tin CAMP TENT copy
A close up of the ten, showing the flap gently blowing in the breeze.  The ‘guy rope’ is held securely to a tiny wooden tent peg, and I made the Union Jack Flag from paper.

I wasn’t absolutely sure that the tents would have been this Khaki colour – but it seemed right and looked so right that I was convinced that it had to be so.

brownsea Island e
The purple rule is showing the measurement of the tin, in centimetres. There are roughly 2.5cm to an inch.  So:  the tin is 9cm tall, and that would mean that it’s 3.54″ in inches.

The tree in the tin is made from a twig which was found in my back garden.

I built the campfire from some broken twigs which I’d found in my garden at the end of last summer, and had dried them out and kept them in my craft room, waiting for the right project.  Ahhh …. don’t you love it when you plan for something –  that you have no idea about at the time, – but when it happens …. YOU’RE READY FOR IT!  😀

brownsea Island tin CAMP FIRE
The Camp Fire

I thought that all the best scout camps would have a lit fire, cracking, sparkling and sending up smoke signals which floated tiny bits of burning embers up, up, up into the sky ….  so I built a camp fire exactly as I’d expect to see one!

I think that the most difficult part of this little Diorama Tin was the Red Squirrel you see hiding in the tree.  Made from clay, it took me three ‘goes’ before I got the size right.

brownsea island C
Can you see the red squirrel?

The red squirrel is the UK’s only native squirrel species, and was once a common sight across the UK. But for decades they’ve been in decline in the UK, and today,  red squirrels are sadly absent from most of the UK,  affected by the spread of the introduced non-native grey squirrel.

The Pine woods of Brownsea Island are home to one of the few remaining red squirrel populations in England.  Naturally because of this, I had to include a red squirrel in the tin!

I added a little pull out booklet to the inner lid of the altered tin . . .

brownsea Island tin Words

When pulled out, it tells the story of how the Scouts began . . .

I so enjoyed making this Little Tin.  It wasn’t a quick make by any standards, but so very enjoyable and once it was eventually finished, I felt as if I’d been smiling for days and days.  Such a fun make.  But then….  as we all know ….  I do like to make Little things.  lol.

Author: The Art of Cobwebs - aka:- thecobweboriumemporium

Hello. I'm 'Cobwebs'. I live in a wee little cottage in the South of England, aptly called Cobweb Cottage. This little dwelling really is a cobweb factory. Not inside (well, occasionally) - but outside - flipping heck! This information should give you a clue as to why my blog is called The Art of Cobwebs aka: The Cobweborium Emporium. I've been arty and crafty from a very young age, and although my crafts have sometimes turned a corner and taken me in another direction, I've always crafted in some way, shape or form. One day, in the blink of an eye, life changed somewhat for me and the consequences were many. I had to find a new way of being 'artistic'. Card making; scrap-booking; producing ATC's and ACEO's; needle felting; Polymer clay; painting- but in a more relaxed style than I had before, and sewing, - are all things which I visit, as and when life allows. I've fairy recently become a Textile Artist and am enjoying this new creative outlet very much as it offers me so much scope for letting my imagination run through a grassy field and feel the wind in my hair - (mentally, of course). I love to create. To make things. I truthfully believe that the best gifts in the world are those in which you've given your time, rather than your cash. Thank you so much for visiting. Please visit my blog (link below) and have a look around. I'm sure you'll find something to enjoy, even if it's only a handful of jokes! (yes, seriously - there really are jokes!) Wishing you a truly blessed rest of your day! ~ Cobs. <3

Ahhh… you must be leaning on your elbows. You’re cutting the blood supply off to your hands! 😀

      Nah, only joshing.
Aw glad you like the Little Tin. It’s easier to see with the eye rather than in photos, as you can see the depth to the whole thing, and everything …. well, it just looks great.

You could make these with paper cuts and ‘stuff’, Bev. Graphic 45 papers would be perfect for this sort of size project. Aww … can you imagine an Autumn (Fall) one …. with orange, brown and black papers – little pumpkins and leaves?

Ohh… or … a door … with an Autumn/Fall wreath on it? Maybe a cat on the door step?

Or how about a Christmas Little Tin?!
You could go to town on one of those!

OK… you have to try one now. You can do this, you know you can!

Tickled pink that you like it Bev.
Thank you, my lovely friend – both for coming and for the beautiful comment.

Ohh, thank you! I’m thrilled to pieces that you like it.

Lord Baden Powell came up with the idea for Scouts, and tested his idea out on Brownsea Island. It worked, and within a very short time the idea had made its way all around the world.

It’s a truly fabulous ‘history’ to learn about.

  7. I love your new little tin Cobs!! The fire and the squirrel are the perfect little touches to a campsite.
I will never forget camping with our children one time. As we sat at our picnic table a squirrel fell out of the tree overhead and landed right on our table. That is the only time in my life I have seen a squirrel fall out of a tree!

    1. Hello Chicken 😀
Aww I’m just thrilled to pieces that you like the little Brownsea Island, Boy Scouts Camping tin. I think out of all the various parts of the diorama, the camp fire draws me to it. I think it’s the smoke and the embers floating upwards to the sky.

The squirrel landing on your picnic table?!!! I bet that made you all jump! LOL.
Like you, I’ve not seen a squirrel fall out of a tree either. Maybe the little chap was after stealing a nibble or two from your picnic and it was the only way he could think of to actually get onto the table without giving any of you prior warning. LOL. He plotted that really well!

Thank you so much for coming Chicken, and for the really lovely comment. Bless your heart.

    1. Hello Nancee 😀
Aww, thank you. I’m thrilled that you like it, and knowing Mr.Cobs friend, I think he will like it too.
These little tin things didn’t used to take me too long to make .. but that was back when I was a spring chicken (early 20’s) … however now … they take me forever – mainly because I keep dropping things, and if you drop something made from clay, then, of course, it’s spoiled and you have to begin again.

This problem doesn’t make for happy crafting – for it doesn’t have to be clay .. die cuts dropped on the floor can magically disappear for ever more, or… when trying to find where they’ve floated down to, I will more often than not roll the chair wheels over the die cut and ruin it, so have to begin all over again … get the die out, set it up with the paper, do the cut … get it out of the die, and then hope to Dog that I don’t drop the blasted thing again. LOL

Aww, it’s a strange version of ‘fun’ being me! lol.

Thank you so much for coming Nancee, and for taking the time to leave a message.

  11. Ohh…it’s magical and beautiful and I hope he LOVED it, because I do! What a wonderful, thoughtful momento, you’re so clever!

Also I love the Gene Wilder version of this film… zany and endearing rather than the somewhat scary Johnny Depp version.

Charlie just smacked me as I was singing the song to her..oh well… hope you’re well and having a good evening, lots of love to you 🙂 xxx

    1. Gene Wilder …. yes, my favourite version too. But there are parts of the Johnny Depp version which I like muchly. But then … it was made before Mr. Depp turned a little weird in real life and now seems to walk around looking and sounding almost shell shocked. (Poor chap. Something is going badly wrong there).

Charlie smacking you for singing … My dog Harry, who I lost four years ago, used to cry and then howl when I sang. I prefer to think he liked it so much that he was praising me. I fear, however, that he hated it and was begging me to stop as it was hurting his ears. lol

      1. Good afternoon dear Cobs and I hope all is well with you on this somewhat rainy day…still it will do the garden some good and I can hear the frogs croaking happily away!

Charlie has certain songs that just really annoy her for some reason…she doesn’t care for Christina Aguilera at all!

Hmm… Johnny Depp, not quite sure what’s going on there. I was a little upset to hear about Morgan Freeman – what makes people think they can just behave how they please???

Lots of love to you 🙂 xxx

        1. Rainy? It hasn’t rained here! Not even a drop! Have to admit that it did look a little gloomy earlier on today, but the rain stayed away.

Charlie and Christine Aguilera … What can I say? … She has taste. lol [snort]

Morgan Freeman …. Well! You could have knocked me down with a feather! I was so surprised to hear about that. Somehow I expected more of him.

I think that we are living in a different age. What was just (maybe) flirting – the odd touch to the arm, or hand, The quick arm around and squeeze …. those sorts of things were simply looked on as flirting.

However … times have changed and women expect to feel equal, and have equal rights. We don’t expect to be touched or ‘man handled’, as it’s looked on as now.

The problem lies in the ‘history’ of that gentle touch to the hand. What was simply a touch to the hand in 1980, is now considered to be sexual harassment.

Ok … I know I’ve simplified it there a little, but it’s the time between what WAS acceptable, and what is now totally unacceptable.

I feel a certain sadness at the direction this is all going in, for I fear that we are heading for a stage where any look and smile will be unacceptable – and so relationships as you and I know them, won’t be in existence any more. I fear that we will no longer meet the opposite sex in the supermarket; at the bus stop; at a party etc etc etc. But everything will be down to a choice via an App. Bit like choosing a meal at a restaurant.

All the joy of relationships will no longer be the way of things. Everything is now ‘swipe right’. (I have no idea what it actually means, but it seems to be the way things are now).

Ugh …. what are we doing to our world?

But … you’re right of course. What actually does make people think they can just behave how they please? With these highly paid stars of Hollywood … is it a fame/monetary/power thing? Not sure … but I do know that if they tried it on either of my daughters, there would be no waiting for a court battle …. I’d sort the man out who tried it on with them, pretty sharpish, and they’d not try it again!!

          1. And now it’s Sunday lunchtime… the rain has passed, having given the garden a freshener and encouraging another growth spurt from the lawn… my mother put some Wilko’s own brand lawn feed on her lawn and now it’s gone… crispy…

We seem to live in a world now where political correctness seems to have bent double in order to please everyone when really all that’s needed is a dose of common sense and kindness….
Sending totally pc hugs for a pleasant Sunday 🙂 xxx
