Fairy Dragon Eggs ~ the Cobs way.

I said last week (in The Wand of Doom post) that Little Cobs (my Grandson) and I had done another crafty project together, which I’d share in another post, and I’m here today to share that crafty project, along with some others which I started off, and he finished.  All of what you are about to see were made with Little Cobs.

It all began with me mentioning that I knew that Fairies had Fairy Dragons which they rode on, and which protected all of Fairy Land from any dangers like fierce dogs or Ogres(!),  and,  I said,  those Fairy Dragons laid eggs, from which Baby Dragons were born!

Little Cobs, naturally wanted to see a Fairy Dragon Egg.  Hmm.  Now I’d seen on Pinterest and on someone else’s blog, some ‘Dragon Eggs‘ which were just incredible.  But … not suitable at all for a small child, as they were made from drawing pins (thumb tacks).  Knowing Little Cobs as I do, I knew that he’d pick those pins out one at a time until there was a trail of them through the house!

So I had to come up with another idea.  And I did.  And …  that original idea turned into another one, and then it made me think of something else … and on and on until …  well …  I’ll share the photos, and then you’ll see.

It all began with a polystyrene egg …  which I painted first to take away the white (but you can get away without doing that bit, if you want to try this out).  Then, using glue gel in a syringe, I fixed assorted Candi (made by Craftwork Cards) and overlapped the Candi  dots, to make the ‘Dragon Scales’.

Dragons Scales Egg 1 - Half completed
Photo showing the egg, half way through the making process.

Once I’d  finished fixing all the Candi dots in place, the egg looked like this ….

Dragons Egg 5
A Dragon Egg . . .  but it needed ‘the Magic!’

The glue gel needs 24 hours to dry – and unless you’re really careful, I’d suggest covering the egg with the Candi dots in two sessions.  It’s not a quick to do project, so don’t think you’ll get away with it being finished in an hour.  You get quicker as you get used to it … but it’s still a good couple of hours or more to cover an egg.

The egg looked impressive exactly like that – and Little Cobs loved it … but it needed some Fairy Magic to actually bring it to that special place that children love.  So …  out came the Buff It – by Pinflair (one of my most favourite crafting items in my craft room – I absolutely love it!).  I told my project manager (aka Little Cobs)  to choose three colours of the Buff it – which took him ages, – that kid likes to change his mind a lotlol.  I gave him a cosmetic sponge and showed him how to get just a little bit of Buff It on the sponge, and gentle swipe it over the Dragon Scales on the Egg.  And when we’d finished,  this ….  is what had happened …

Dragon Egg 2

He was absolutely delirious with joy at this egg.  He didn’t want to put it down.  He took it to Grandad so that it could be admired.  He showed it to the Dog, and even to Alf Capone (one of the cats), who I interpreted for (I speak several languages – English, Dog, Cat, Horse, Rabbit and [mostly] Gobbledygook), and said that Alf was very impressed and believed that it really was a Fairy Dragon Egg – adding that Alf would know this because he played with the fairies every single day!

From there, we went on to colour another Egg I’d pre-made ready for him, this time using all Pink Candi dots . . .

Gold Dragons Egg 2

…  as you can see we coloured that one totally in Antique Gold Buff It – and you can just see the pink of the Candi Dots peeping out from between the scales, which kind of gives it a sort of rosey glow about it.

Gold Fairy Dragons Egg 1

…. this picture (above) is of the exact same egg, but stood up (balanced on a glitter shaker lid), with a penny coin, so that you can get an idea of the size.

So, those Candi dot eggs completed,  out came some more polystyrene eggs, only this time I did something totally different with them, and Little C and I coloured them up  … and here’s what they look like…

Pearlised Dragons Egg 1

This effect of a lumpy, bumpy egg came about by using a heat gun.  Now if you try it yourself be aware that you have to be REALLY careful with the heat.  Firstly … DON’T HOLD THE EGG IN YOUR HAND while using the heat gun on it.   And don’t hold the heat in one place for too long.  You have to keep the heat moving around and know when to stop heating.  As soon as you begin to see a result that you like, then stop.

Little Cobs wanted to use only Pearl coloured Buff It on this bumpy egg,  but I said that it might look a little boring so talk him into letting me add just little bits of colour, here and there, and blended them well, so that it looked as if it had that lustre of a real pearl – or the colours of Mother of Pearl.

Peacock Blue Fairy Dragon Egg 1

My Project Manager made the executive decision of BLUUUE! (said like that too! lol) – for this egg.  Again, this lovely effect was done using the heat gun – but very gently.   Once we’d coloured up the egg and Little C had ‘polished’ it to a sheen, it was just fabulous… in fact, it reminded me of a Chocolate Easter Egg, wrapped in foil and waiting for me to break it open and eat!

And finally . . .  I wanted to do something that wasn’t Dragon …  something with more ROAR and GROWL and ARGGH!  . . .  and thought that perhaps I could get a result that was more grungy and pitted – in the hope of making a Dinosaur Egg!

Dinosaur Egg

This result came from carefully heating the egg in places for a while, then coming back and heating that bit again, then again and again – until the desired result came about. It was still bumpy in some places, but more grungy in others.  I have no idea what a Dinosaur Egg might look like, but this, I decided was what our Dino Egg was going to look like. 🙂

The Project Manager decided upon brown and green for the Dinosaur egg,  and to be honest,  I think he chose the perfect colours for it.  They really worked as Dinosaur colours.

All in all we had an absolute ball of a time with these eggs. Great Crafting projects and lots of fun both in the making of and in the colouring up.

Oh crikey! almost forgot ... all of the papers you see in the photographs is all Graphic 45 paper – from one of their more recent collections:  ‘Fairy Dust’.

And that’s all there was to it!  😀

I still have two special eggs to show youbut those will be for another time.  I think I’ve kept you here long enough, and that bit of coffee you’ve got left in your cup must surely be cold by now.  Shall I get you another?  Or do you have to rush off?

Thank you so much for coming.  Happy Monday!  I hope your week ticks along nicely, with no problems which make you pull your hair out, and no troubles like finding out you’ve got the work or the shops and forgotten your purse or keys.

May an Angel pass over your house and sprinkle your home with love, peace, joy and all the stuff which will give you contentment.

Have a blessed rest of your day, and a truly lovely week.

Author: The Art of Cobwebs - aka:- thecobweboriumemporium

Hello. I'm 'Cobwebs'. I live in a wee little cottage in the South of England, aptly called Cobweb Cottage. This little dwelling really is a cobweb factory. Not inside (well, occasionally) - but outside - flipping heck! This information should give you a clue as to why my blog is called The Art of Cobwebs aka: The Cobweborium Emporium. I've been arty and crafty from a very young age, and although my crafts have sometimes turned a corner and taken me in another direction, I've always crafted in some way, shape or form. One day, in the blink of an eye, life changed somewhat for me and the consequences were many. I had to find a new way of being 'artistic'. Card making; scrap-booking; producing ATC's and ACEO's; needle felting; Polymer clay; painting- but in a more relaxed style than I had before, and sewing, - are all things which I visit, as and when life allows. I've fairy recently become a Textile Artist and am enjoying this new creative outlet very much as it offers me so much scope for letting my imagination run through a grassy field and feel the wind in my hair - (mentally, of course). I love to create. To make things. I truthfully believe that the best gifts in the world are those in which you've given your time, rather than your cash. Thank you so much for visiting. Please visit my blog (link below) and have a look around. I'm sure you'll find something to enjoy, even if it's only a handful of jokes! (yes, seriously - there really are jokes!) Wishing you a truly blessed rest of your day! ~ Cobs. <3

    1. Hello Anne, Happy Monday 😀
Thank you so much for coming, and for the lovely comment.
Not sure if I guided Little Cobs, or if I’m just the voice of reason about putting too much colour on his sponge to ‘paint’ the eggs.

Bless him – he’s very much a ‘more is more’ chap. lol.

Thanks for coming Anne. Lovely to see you, as always, and thank you for taking the time to comment. ~ Cobs. xxx

  1. These are amazing and I’m not surprised that your little project manager was so pleased with them. So clever to add those dots and then the metallic finish – it makes them so magical. As for the blue egg – I had the same thought as you when I first saw it. It really does look like a chocolate Easter egg all wrapped perfectly in foil. Wishing you a happy Monday . I’m off now to search for chocolate after seeing your ‘chocolate’ egg. Hannah x

    1. The Craftwork Candi dots really did work perfectly, and they’re secure too.

That blue egg … looks so, so SO much like a chocolate, foil wrapped Easter egg that it’s difficult to see in the photo’s that it’s really not. I was really surprised when Little C and I had finished colouring it, and I held it up for us both to look at it. Even L.C exclaimed “looks like chocolate!” . (said in a sort of ‘wishful thinking’ voice lol.

    1. OH MY GOODNESS! YES! A Water Horse Egg! Ooooooo…. guess what’s in the future for Cobs and the Project Manager!

The gold egg reminded me of the Harry Potter one too Anna.

You’re right … ‘The Teenager’ has taste.
Apart from the ‘amazing’. Both of you are confusing me with someone who has talent. My talent know no beginning. lol.

    1. Hello Ruthie 🙂
Aw, I don’t have to tell you how much I love seeing your name pop up here. Such a joy.

I’m tickled pink that you like the Fairy Dragon Eggs, and am picturing your description of Little Cobs and I talking of Fairies and the Dragons on which they ride.

The day of making these was magical. Little Cobs was so ‘into’ the choosing of colours and he was so gentle with the stroking of the Buff-it colours onto the eggs. When they were finished, and after he’d ‘polished’ the colours to make them glow – his eyes were a total picture. They told the story of what was going on inside his head. I could see how he was building the story of the eggs being Fairy Dragon Eggs – and the story became the reality because here he was, holding those eggs. Aww.. I wanted to cry at it. (Happy tears of course! lol)

Thank you so much for coming Ruthie, and for the truly fabulous comment. You’ve made a rainy day truly bright because of the warm sun you’ve shined on it.

  4. Candy dots? Not quite sure what those are really. Candy yes, but pretty thin wafer candy. Hard or soft? 🙂 Anyway the dragon eggs are truly lovely. I don’t think I have heard of that buff stuff either.
Lovely looking eggs tho’ really lovely. I am fond of the first one, even left with the candy dot patterns is lovely. Do the eggs have a nesting site? Is there going to be a Dragon made? Paperclay perhaps? Would love to experiment with paperclay. I have some too, but haven’t busted it out yet, too many other things to do. I would have to live to be 150 to try all the crafting things that I would like to try.
Lovely sunshine today but bitter bitter cold wind! We are going to be in for another couple weeks of chilly weather here but it’s going to get cloudy so that will help a bit. The poor ol’ dog doesn’t like the bitter cold and he’s getting to the point of not wanting to walk and becoming a boat anchor. He is stubborn! Once we get to the trail like walk he walks along nicely, but along the sidewalk, nope. You would think the other way around would be better.
The cats don’t seem to mind the weather except the older one, he will be 13 in April, he is in on the sheepskin grooming as we speak. He is an obsessive groomer and makes his skin horrible down his back and his hair thin out. I’m sure he is allergic to bites. The black brothers don’t seem to care if it’s stormy, they go out. Odd.
Anyway Cobs it has been nice talking to you this morning, afternoon where you are, and lovely that you shared your egg making talents. Truly remarkable eggs. No wonder little Cobs loves coming to visit.
    hugs from across the pond.

    1. Hello Soozy, lovely to see you 🙂
Candi Dots … The Candi dots are the things I’ve shown you in the first and second photograph. The one of the egg half covered in Candi, and then the second photo showing the polystyrene egg totally covered in the Candi.

Little Cobs and I haven’t decided where these particular eggs are going to ‘sit’, we were having too much fun in the making of them. But I’m quite certain that they’ll have a place – particularly when his bedroom is re-decorated, which is on the ‘Honey-Do’ list belonging to Mr.Cobs.
Hadn’t thought about making a Dragon – but maybe that might be a nice project for us both at some point. I can see Little Cobs enjoying getting a bit messy – perhaps with paper mache. I think that’s more his style. Bless him.

Yes, it’s quite chilly here – but I think that’s down more to the wind factor, making it feel a lot colder than it actually is. I can tell that the land is warming up here because there are spring shoots poking their heads out of the ground and I have more daffodils popping open now too.

Sorry to hear about your cat. Maybe a trip to the vets might come up with something which might help the problem. I should imagine he throws up hair balls regularly if he’s got his fur down to the skin in places. Poor thing.

Thank you so much for coming Soozy. Love seeing you.
It’s about time that you showed us some of your crafty projects, young lady! You need to get a blog together and keep us all entertained with crafting and tales from your corner of the world. I think you’d get lots of followers.

Have a blessed rest of your day Soozy. Squidges ~ Cobs. 🙂

      1. “Bob” has always been a compulsive licker, since he was little. He is fine Cobs, no worries, it is just I have to put the flea stuff on him and I hate to use it. Maybe I could bath him. I have done that before but only once. It went pretty well.
The candi, it is not real candy? That was my question. lol They looked like actual wafers of candy, like the wee chocolate ones you can melt to make actual chocolates. 😉
We have daffy’s, tulips, hyacinth, grape hyacinth, snowdrops and crocus coming. The snowdrops are already out and dying off now.
My laundry has dried in the bitter wind and sunshine so that is a most positive thing. I love things dried outside! They smell soooooo good.
It has been lovely to see the sunshine but the wind can disappear! It would have been a perfect day if the wind wasn’t so bitter.
        Have a lovely evening.

I’ve a feeling it was your blog I first saw them on, Emma. They looked so lovely. But … totally not suitable for a little person, because of the drawing pins – so I knew I had to find a way to make those dragon scales, but safe ones which would do no harm if they were trodden on or (heaven forbid) put in the mouth.

  5. WOWZER how awesome are Master Cobs Fairy Dragon Eggs,
From one Grandma to another …. because we know about this stuff 🙂 I can vouch for the authenticity of those there eggs, they are an EXACT replica,
As for the Dinosaur egg … well let me tell you … I KNOW (through excavations of the cottage garden with Moo) you have what may be considered an actual Dinosaur Egg ~ your project manager has a calling as an apprentice to John R ‘Jack’ Horner ~ a palaeontologist and advisor on the Jurassic Park films, obviously the discovery of Fairy Dragon Eggs is still in its infancy which is why Little Cobs sharing through this post of his eggs is vital to gain world wide recognition to their existence 🙂

You’re on the button … us Grandma’s really do know about this stuff, and I’m thrilled that such an expert as yourself has vouched for the authenticity of the Eggs.

The Dinosaur Egg … when seen in real life and held in the hand … cooo… even I could believe that one’s real – so it’s wonderful to know that it really is!

I shall of course, tell my Project Manager (Little Cobs) that he could be an apprentice palaeontologist (I had to type that four times before I spelt it correctly – thank heavens for spell check, eh? lol).

Aw Mrs.P, thank you so much for coming and for this fabulous, wonderful, playful comment. He’s going to love it when I read it out to him, and I shall add a bit of information about my lovely friend P. You’ll be one of his favourite people by the time I’ve finished. 🙂

Beloved & I are great believers in encouraging children’s imaginations (as my pa was with me) which is why it’s important for us Grandmas to go boldly into the land of Fairy Dragon Eggs …. our research into such myths & legends is invaluable to the next generation, without us intrepid explorers kids would be at a loss when faced with unexplained rocks and rare garden excavation finds LOL

        1. You are SO right. Of course, you and I KNOW that Fairies exist – where-as other people either say they don’t or say they think they do.

Naturally … you and I also know that Fairy Dragons Exist. I mean to say … how would I have known how to make Fairy Dragon Eggs if I didn’t know anything about Fairy Dragons. And how would you have recognised these eggs as being Fairy Dragon Eggs if you didn’t know what they looked like in the first place!

Yes… we Grammies really are ‘up’ on myths and legends, and we “know our own know” (as I’m want to say) when faced with a ‘find’ which is unrecognisable to others, but to us, we can see the treasure that they really are!

The world would be nothing without us, P. 😀 [grinning wide and high and proud!] lol

I’m thrilled to bits that you like the Fairy Dragon Eggs. I know I perhaps shouldn’t say this but … I absolutely love them! I think they’re up there with my favourite craft projects that I’ve ever undertook.

I think Little Cobs has inherited a few things from his Grammy, and not all of them are fabulous. He likes to make up new words, has a relationship with chocolate which isn’t a healthy one (and one we’re all trying to direct into a different direction – but carrot sticks and celery just don’t ‘do it’ when chocolate is the answer to a problem. lol). He likes to watch Tom and Jerry, and enjoys all the animal doing daft things videos on You Tube. Yup… he’s definitely got a sprinkle of Grammy in the mix. lol

Thank you so much for coming Nancee, and especially for staying to leave such a lovely comment.

I am in love with those dinosaur eggs. (yes I did entertain the thought of chewing the candy off them but that was before you painted the other stuff on them….just being honest here.)
You and Little Cobs now have dinosaur and dragon Easter eggs….how wonderful is that?

LOL at your entertaining thought .. I think you’d be sorely disappointed if you did chew the Craftwork Cards Candi. I haven’t tried it, but I can imagine the ‘ewww face’ if I did! LOL

I’m planning to put all the Fairy Dragon Eggs in a bowl, at Easter, and put them out on display. I think Little Cobs will enjoy them being there at Easter. He’ll get chance to show them off all over again. Bless his little heart.
