The Wand of Dooom ~ by Little Cobs aged 7 (almost)

Little Cobs, my scrumptious Grandson (aged nearly 7 – as he’s fond of reminding me), has never, up till now, been that ‘into’ crafting.  It was such a heart-sore to me but it was something that every now and again I’d have a play around with, at the dining room table, to see if I could spark him up and get him going.  That was until last week when I asked him if he wanted to do a little painting or something …  he positively JUMPED at it!  So, acting upon his instructions I got various colours of paint, and bits of card, and he went off to his bedroom, (here in Cobweb Towers) coming back with an armful of Dinosaurs.  “Lets do Dinosaur footprints!”  he said excitedly.  So … we did.  We painted (with a cut sponge) the dinosaurs feet and made them ‘walk’ across the bits of card!

Not wanting to end this sudden change of craftiness, I said …. “Oooo, I know … let’s paint a proper painting.  On a canvas – just like an artist does!”  He was all for this … so another trip to the craft room, and I returned to the table with a small canvas – about 6″x 4″ (roughly) … and we painted birds – …. well, actually he painted different coloured splodged finger prints, and I said I would do some magic and turn them into anything he wanted – except dinosaurs (because we’d already done those) … birds was chosen – along with a special request from him of …  “A SLUG!” – which we named Cecil.  We left the painting to dry, I added some details to the back (name, date etc) and then sealed the acrylics lightly so that he could take it home and impress mummy and daddy.  (They were by the way (impressed).

So this week I thought I’d try to get him to do something else crafty …. and … we made his very own Wand!

Wand of Dooom 1

I’ve seen wands on Pinterest made for children, using a hot glue gun.  Personally – I don’t think the making of anything using a Hot Glue Gun is child friendly.  But that’s just me and my over-protective Grammyness!.

Most of you know that Little Cobs has Cerebral Palsy – which,  along with other problems, can affect his hand/eye co-ordination a little, and sometimes he can be a bit shaky – hence the reason I wanted to get the main hot glue stuff out of the way.  BUT … I knew we would still have to use the glue gun for fixing adornments.

Wand of Dooom 3

He  chose three different coloured jewels, a red one, a blue one and a black one, all which had one side covered in aurora borealis and made the jewel flash all sorts of colours as you moved them.

I explained that Grammy would have to fix these jewels to the wand using some very special glue and a hot glue gun.  I told him that this was very dangerous stuff and only for grown ups to do – so although he could tell me where he wanted his jewels to be, I would have to glue them.

Bless his heart, he was so good about it.  He sat patiently, watching – and playing with all the jewels in the pots – (he even went and got his little matchbox digger/earth mover and made a building site on the table while waiting).

Then came the painting bit – and after that …. best of all ….  we added shine and glimmer, which gave it “the MAGIC!” (apparently) – at least that’s what Little Cobs said, and he knows what he’s talking about when it comes to magic. (apparently).  🙂

I gave him a little make up sponge and showed him how to gently add the glimmer and shine to the wand, in the places he wanted it to be.  He had an absolute ball of a time with it.  So much so that I had beautiful gold fingernails where he’d sponged me with it too.

Wand of Dooom 2

The glimmer and shine (the MAGIC) comes from one of my favourite products in my craft room.  Pinflair Buff It.  Available HERE. (scroll down just a little to find where the Buff It products are listed).  I use the original Buff-it rather than the liquid Buff-it.  I’ve never tried the liquid so can’t comment on it.  As you can see in the above photo … the buff it will ‘go’ just about anywhere.  On the wood and on the glue, beads, jewels and on Grammys too!   Then after a gentle polish with a soft tissue, the wand was finished and ready to wave, with a swish and a flick!  (Harry Potter fans will ‘get’ that).

And that’s all there was to it!

I thought a great name for this wand would be:  The Three Eyed Dragon Wand (because the jewels look like three dragon eyes peeping out) …  but Little Cobs felt that he could come up with something far better … so while I went and washed my gold fingernails, young Cobs turned his Grandad into a Frog and when I got back into the living room Little Cobs proclaimed that this (waving his wand about with abandon) was  …  “THE WAND  OF  DOOOM!”  –  you have to say it in a deeper voice than normal and prolong that ‘Dooom’, so that it gives the listener a feeling of impending … dooom.  LOL.  When I said it as The Wand of Doom, I was corrected and made to say it several times until I got it right.

Some people are so bossy!  😀

We did actually make something else too ...  but I’ll leave that for another day.

Well ….  Happy Monday!  The start of another week.  Another one!  Coo, aren’t we lucky that we get given these weeks, and we don’t even ask for them or add them to our shopping lists!  We get them free too – which is my very most favourite price!

Thank you so much for coming and having a coffee with me.  May today be a really great day for you.  Remember … you’re in charge of your mood, so pick a good one!

Sending love and squidges,  from me, here in my corner, to you, there in yours ~

Author: The Art of Cobwebs - aka:- thecobweboriumemporium

Hello. I'm 'Cobwebs'. I live in a wee little cottage in the South of England, aptly called Cobweb Cottage. This little dwelling really is a cobweb factory. Not inside (well, occasionally) - but outside - flipping heck! This information should give you a clue as to why my blog is called The Art of Cobwebs aka: The Cobweborium Emporium. I've been arty and crafty from a very young age, and although my crafts have sometimes turned a corner and taken me in another direction, I've always crafted in some way, shape or form. One day, in the blink of an eye, life changed somewhat for me and the consequences were many. I had to find a new way of being 'artistic'. Card making; scrap-booking; producing ATC's and ACEO's; needle felting; Polymer clay; painting- but in a more relaxed style than I had before, and sewing, - are all things which I visit, as and when life allows. I've fairy recently become a Textile Artist and am enjoying this new creative outlet very much as it offers me so much scope for letting my imagination run through a grassy field and feel the wind in my hair - (mentally, of course). I love to create. To make things. I truthfully believe that the best gifts in the world are those in which you've given your time, rather than your cash. Thank you so much for visiting. Please visit my blog (link below) and have a look around. I'm sure you'll find something to enjoy, even if it's only a handful of jokes! (yes, seriously - there really are jokes!) Wishing you a truly blessed rest of your day! ~ Cobs. <3

    1. Hello Barbara 🙂
Aww what a shame that your Grandchildren live so far from you. I think I’d be as miserable as can be if I couldn’t see Little Cobs as often as I do, – so I can imagine how you must feel having them so far away.

I’m tickled pink that you like Little Cobs wand. I didn’t tell him that I was going to show everyone his special wand on my blog, so he’s going to get a smile about finding it on here. I plan to read him any comments that people have left, so that he gets maximum enjoyment. LOL.

Thank you so much for coming, and for the lovely comment.

    1. Hello Mrs.C
Aww, you’ve got that the wrong way round – it’s Little Cobs who’s lovely, and me who’s lucky. God certainly had a plan when he gave us all this wondrous child. He teaches me so much about life that I wouldn’t have known if it wasn’t for him.

When my daughter and son-in-law were told that he had cerebral palsy, I told them that God only gives these children to very special people, and I know exactly how special and proud I feel every time I see him.

Aw heck, would you look at me getting all soft. LOL.

You’re right, it was teamwork which made his wand, but it was his magic which brought it ‘to life’. Without him, it would have just been a wooden stick with a hot glue accident on the end. 😀

Thank you so much for coming for a coffee with me, and for the lovely comment.
Wishing you a wonderful Monday to begin your new week.

    1. Hello Beverly.
Aw I’m just thrilled to bits that you came today and saw this wand. I told Little Cobs that I would show you the wand, and his little eyes twinkled. I’ve got a photo to share with you. I just have to resize it so that it doesn’t crash your computer when it arrives. Eeek! 🙂

I shall read out your message to him on Tuesday (tomorrow), as we collect him from School on a Tuesday and he stays to have his tea with us. So he’ll be tickled pink when I read it to him. (His reading is really coming on – but if I read it for him first, he’ll get that little tickly feeling inside which will show up on his face and in his eyes – and I just adore those moments.)

Thanks for coming Bev. Love you oodles ~ Cobs. xxx

  4. Oh wow, I love the ‘Wand of Doom’ both in its appearance and name. I had to laugh as I was reading this as Little Cobs sounds just my 7 year old son. I can imagine the manner in which all these things were done and exactly how to say Wand of Dooooooom. lol. My kids adore hot glue but I never actually let them use it without A LOT of supervision. I’ll point to a blob and say ‘stick that there’ or let them squeeze the handle to make the glue ooze (daughter is 9 and a half though so I’m a little happier with her helping with hot glue projects).

Such a great activity for you both to enjoy and the painting you did with him sounds a lot of fun too. I look forward to seeing what else you have made 🙂 Hannah x

    1. Hello Hannah! 🙂
Aww, you’ll know EXACTLY how it is with the Hot Glue Gun since you have a seven year old too! I was kind of dreading using it in his presence, as he’s a wriggler and toucher – so approached it with dread … but he was SO good that I felt at one point someone had swapped him for a genuine Angel! lol

Wand of Doooooooom! LOLOLOL. Mr. Cobs can say it how Little C wants it said … me … I’m apparently a big fail on it, but he humours me, saying: “Ok Grammy, you NEARLY got it. Good job”.

Never have I felt such a total failure! lololol

I’ve been using hot glue guns from about 5 minutes after they were invented – but even now I can still cause myself the greatest amount of paint and injury. I remember once getting on my index finger fingernail … cor, flipping ‘eck that burnt for an extraordinarily long time and I didn’t think it was going to stop! I don’t think I have fingerprints on two of my fingers any longer, either!

Thank you so much for coming Hannah, and for your fabulous comment.

  5. What a great wand of doooom! I was going to ask how you made the wand part and then in the comment above me here, you mentioned a piece of wood, like a chopstick perhaps, then glue over it. What a great work of art Cobs, you must be so proud of the wee Cobs, he has done such a fantastic job and you for the buffing parts and the glue parts. I am with you in that children should not use a glue gun. That could end so badly.
I love this project. See you Friday 🙂

    1. Hello Soozy! 🙂
A chopstick! YES … that would work brilliantly. If you cut it down a little it will be more of a size for a child to cope with too.

Glue Guns and Children … I agree, they don’t mix well together. Heck if I can cause injury to my grown up self, then I shudder to think what a child could end up doing to it’s skin.

Thanks for coming Soozy. I’m thrilled you like Little Cobs wand of Doooooom! lol

    1. Hello Fabulous Salpal!
The wand making with Little Cobs was indeed fun! I have the greatest times with him. He’s a total darling. (although his mummy and daddy don’t believe that he’s the Angel I tell them he is. No idea why, lol)

I am happy to state that Mr. Cobs suffered no apparent problems from the turning into a frog and back again. Little Cobs reassured me that his spells only last for a few minutes. Thank heavens for that. Mr. Cobs has promised me some new shelving in the Craft Room – and somehow I don’t think a froggy body will be up to that task!
      lol

    1. Hello Mrs. P 🙂
lol … I could see, when he waved that finished wand, that he was Greater than Superman. Better than Batman. More powerful than the Jolly Green Giant – no, sorry, that should read: The Hulk. He really was his own version of Harry Potter.

I think I’m going to have to look in my fabric stash to see if I have any black fabric lining material – very lightweight so it’s floaty- and make him a magical wizards cape.

Grandad slowly recovered – although he does seem to have acquired a love of sitting on the floor, on his knees … which at his age isn’t the ideal thing to do, as he creaks and groans as he attempts to get up again. Tsk tsk. Daft old duffer!

Thank you for coming Mrs.P and for the lovely message. I thought of you and little Moo as I was ‘helping’ in the making of this wand and wondered if this was something Moo would enjoy making with you.

Many a time I hear my heart praying that this little chap of mine remembers these moments when he’s older, and that he remembers all the smiles and giggles and closeness that we share, and with the memories comes the absolute knowledge that I love him more than life itself.

I never realised how amazingly wonderful Grandchildren were, and never understood when I heard other Grandparents say such things, that one day I would feel the same way. I am so blessed to have this little chap in my life.

But I do have a couple of wands squirrelled away which I made many years ago …. and I could certainly have a go at zapping you with one of those . . . but you must understand … I’m not a witch – so the results of me zapping, might be … erm … ‘creative’ at best. 😀
      lol.

But … if you’re up for it, then I’m willing to give it a go. lol.

When you wake up in the morning, you will look in the mirror and smile at yourself. Then the thought will kick in that you’ve been Zapped to within an inch of your life …. and all day thoughts will flood into your brain. However, they will come in so fast that if you don’t write them down you’ll forget them. So make sure you have a note pad and pencil next to you!
(You might also want to chance your arm and buy a lottery ticket on the way home – just in case. You never know!)

(I obviously need zapping too, because when I typed out this reply, I typed: Bran Cell. LOLOL… oh my goodness – can you imagine what would have happened had I zapped your Bran? You’d be so regular we could put you in as a replacement for Big Ben! LOLOLOL.

    1. Hello Tina! 😀
Actually laughing out loud at your ‘perfect weekend’. Not sure about it being my idea – for my idea of a perfect weekend involves foot/leg/back/shoulder and head massage, an infinity pool, Radio 4 (BBC), a good book, Ice Cream, Godiva Chocolates, Strawberry’s, Mango’s, Pineapple, Melon and big juicy, flavoursome Grapes. Then before I go – a hair dresser to do my hair, and cosmetic consultant to do my face (preferably with cosmetics which are ‘gentle’ so that it doesn’t bring me out in rashes, or … Tarte cosmetics, as I don’t have a reaction to that).

And finally … upon leaving … my parting gift would be a trunk full of top quality crafty goodies from Graphic 45, Tim Holtze and one or two other makers who I love.

Yup …. just that small request would give me a weekend to enjoy.

What can I say … I’m easily pleased. 🙂 lol

    1. Just get the main part of the glue gun done before the 6yr. old arrives – that way you won’t be so worried about the hot glue gun coming into contact with young skin. ;_

I learnt the law of the glue gun by several burns on my own fingers over the years and from about ten years ago I made it a rule that if the hot glue gun came out, then so did a dish of cold water – so that I could instantly push my injury into the cold water and hopefully end the extreme pain that hot glue can cause. oooooouch!

It was a really fun time and we both got so much love and enjoyment out of it, so I know you will too.
