It was a book – and now it’s a card!

Firstly … sorry to still be posting Christmas cards,  in the middle of January, but this was one which I couldn’t post before Christmas as it would have spoilt the surprise, so sharing it with you now.

Originally this was a children’s book called Dear Zoo.

made from this book

It was one of those books which is ‘interactive’.  It had opening doors on each page.  So I began by cutting those doors out so that the pages lay closely together.

book before

I set to work and first measured out how much of a section I wanted to cut out of the book in order to leave the right size ‘hole’ inside the card/book at the end.  Once I’d cut through the pages, I then glued and used double-sided tape to ensure that the pages I wanted to stay shut actually stay that way.

Then …  I went to town.  Papers, card, ribbons, flowers, baubles, a sleigh, handmade hearts, berries, printed pictures from a CD Rom, cutting, pearls, snowflakes, die cutting …  you name it, I think I probably either did it or thought about doing it.

Inside, showing page 1, of the book/card.

I die cut the Christmas trees, then painted them roughly with a little paint then once dry I added some dimensional ‘snow’ and added a little twinkling glitter.  While those dried I stamped the blue backing paper with clear embossing ink and added some softly twinkly embossing powder so that it gave the background a bit of twinkle.  The snowflakes are all die cuts too.

I printed this page (above) three times, and cut out various parts of the page so that I could do a little decoupage and give the page some depth.

I added a little white glitter here and there, on these layers, just to catch the light and again, add some depth.

The back of the card/book

The spine of the book (and spreading round to the front and back) …  when you see it in real life, looks like leather.  It’s not.  It’s actually made from regular craft card and glycerine. (and an embossing folder – but you can use any embossing folder you like).  I won’t bore you to death with a ‘how to’, because people have posted how to’s about doing it all over the web.  But instead, I’ll give you a video of the fabulous lady who taught me how to make this faux leather:  (her name is Sheena Douglass and she’s Scottish – so give yourself chance to adjust to her accent and you’ll be fine then). . .

And that’s all there was to it!

Have to admit that the most difficult bit was actually cutting through those individual pages.  Coooo, those were thick and really tough work. But then …  I’m a bit of a weakling so taking the top off a bottle can challenge me most days!  tsk tsk.  drat these muscleless arms!

Well .. it’s Tuesday (or Chewsday as my friend pronounces it), and I think we need a little Tuesday fun, so here are a few jokes to turn the corners of your mouth up . . .

  • Why don’t you ever see hippopotamus hiding in trees? Because they’re really good at it.
  • How does NASA organise their company parties? They planet.
  • My friend recently got crushed by a pile of books, but he’s only got his shelf to blame.
  • What did Jay-Z call his girlfriend before they got married? Feyoncé.
  • What do you call dangerous precipitation? A rain of terror.
  • What do you call a big pile of kittens? A meowntain.
  • …. and finally ….
  • Atheism is a non-prophet organisation.

Well even if only one of them made you smile, then I’ve done my job.  😀

Thank you so much for coming.  I love seeing you here.  Each blog post is, for me, like opening up my front door and waiting for you to arrive  . . .  and then you all come, one by one, and stop for a coffee with me.  I just love it.  (and I love it even more when you stay for a chat – so please feel free to chat away in comments.  I can promise I’ll reply because, as everyone will tell you, I love to chat!)  😀

Have a truly blessed rest of your day!

Author: The Art of Cobwebs - aka:- thecobweboriumemporium

Hello. I'm 'Cobwebs'. I live in a wee little cottage in the South of England, aptly called Cobweb Cottage. This little dwelling really is a cobweb factory. Not inside (well, occasionally) - but outside - flipping heck! This information should give you a clue as to why my blog is called The Art of Cobwebs aka: The Cobweborium Emporium. I've been arty and crafty from a very young age, and although my crafts have sometimes turned a corner and taken me in another direction, I've always crafted in some way, shape or form. One day, in the blink of an eye, life changed somewhat for me and the consequences were many. I had to find a new way of being 'artistic'. Card making; scrap-booking; producing ATC's and ACEO's; needle felting; Polymer clay; painting- but in a more relaxed style than I had before, and sewing, - are all things which I visit, as and when life allows. I've fairy recently become a Textile Artist and am enjoying this new creative outlet very much as it offers me so much scope for letting my imagination run through a grassy field and feel the wind in my hair - (mentally, of course). I love to create. To make things. I truthfully believe that the best gifts in the world are those in which you've given your time, rather than your cash. Thank you so much for visiting. Please visit my blog (link below) and have a look around. I'm sure you'll find something to enjoy, even if it's only a handful of jokes! (yes, seriously - there really are jokes!) Wishing you a truly blessed rest of your day! ~ Cobs. <3

  1. More wonderful crafting from the Cobweb Cottage. Just delightful and who ever was surprised by this “card” was a lucky one indeed. How smart to redesign the hard back book .I have seen some really talented books on Pin. and there are a lot of old wasted books out there just waiting for rediscovery. Let’s look into that.

    1. You’re on the money there Beverly … there are so many books going in to landfill and it’s such a shame. Like you I’ve seen some incredible altered art books on Pinterest, which would make the most amazing objets d’art in our homes. . . . . Actually … that’s given me an idea. Oooo, I need to give this idea some thinking time and see if I can plan it out.

I asked you this somewhere else and don’t think I had a reply… so am asking again here…
Is it your Birthday this month? 😀

          1. Treelady (where she sells my cards ) had mentioned a get together for all her friends with Jan. birthdays. Hers is on the 27th which is a Sat. but now she says everyone is staying in because of the flu. Pooh! And I had planned to make party treats. Oh well…they miss out .

            1. You can still make Party Treats ….just invite the family over for a party tea time and tell them to bring a savoury dish with them – and you can make all the yummies!
See? There’s an answer to every problem. It just takes a loony friend to find it. lol

  3. What a fabulous idea, Cobs, I love it! Making a book into a card… I want to have a go! I do. I do!!! 😀
You may not believe this, but I was in Tesco’s earlier (other supermarkets are available) and I was holding a magazine which had those stamp giveaways – and they were designed by Sheena Douglass. What kind of coincidence is that??? 😀 I ended up buying two boxes of festive robins for 30p each (on offer) which ‘may come in’. I didn’t actually get what I went for, but hey ho.
But yes, I really love your card. It is magnificent, magical and marvellously Christmassy!

    1. Ohhh bless your fabulous heart, Tom. I was sat here chuckling away to myself as I read your comment.

How very strange and coincidental that you should have found the Papercrafting magazine with the Sheena Douglass stamps. I know the magazine, for I have a subscription to it. The stamps are very much worth having. They are all so multi applicable to various times or occasions throughout the year. And – this might surprise you – there are many artists who will use stamps as the base for their paintings – especially so for ATC’s and ACEO’s.

Your Robins … if they’re not used before, then next Christmas will be all ready for them, for various different things. (I can highly recommend Tag Art for those types of Robins -for they are very light in weight and so won’t drag on a tag.
Ooo-errr… I’m filled with ideas for a bit of tag art now!

Thanks for coming Tom, and for your lovely comment. Bless you.

  5. Oh my goodness Cobs! That is such a work of art. I had never thought of doing this with a book but what a wonderful idea!
I am wondering what kind of person I am that I found the funniest riddle to be the one about a man crushed by his books!!!

    1. ROFL … that joke tickles me too, but it’s because it reminds me of my lovely dad.

Dad was a truly lovely chap, and very talented (he was a professional entertainer – in the music industry) but his talents didn’t really stretch to woodwork or building of projects etc.

Well, my mum had nagged him over a period of weeks to put a shelf up in her kitchen so that she could put her pans up, out of the way.

Eventually he gave in, bought the materials required, and put a shelf up for her. He stood back to admire his work. We all were required to come to the kitchen to see this amazing shelf… and yes, it really did look brilliant,

Dad decided to show us all how amazing it truly was by picking up the Tupperware box where my mum kept the Tea Bags.

He reached up and placed the box of Tea Bags on the shelf, then stood back to admire the scene, and with a proud smile, said: “There you are!” …. at which point the shelf could stand the strain no longer and promptly fell down, first on the right side, then on the left.

It was like some sort of comic moment on a TV comedy sketch programme. So SO funny!

That shelf is still talked about today and is talked about as: “The Tea Bag shelf”.
And it still makes us laugh raucously all these years later.
So I join you in your laughter about having ‘his shelf to blame’.
      lol

Tickled pink that you like the card/book. Thank you so much for your lovely words.

      1. I love those family stories that become family legends. Those are the kind that live and get passed down for generations! I actually pinned your book to one of my pinterest boards because I am really fascinated by it and think I may have to give it a go down the road.

        1. Ooooo yes, do! They’re really are enjoyable to make. I had a really great time with it.

The family stories … yes … they kind of stick don’t they, and pass down the years. Mr. Cobs has a favourite tale about me … but I’ll share that one another time. he he he. 😀

  6. Such a beautiful book. I have a few here that I have wanted to redo. I know that those pages couldn’t have been easy to cut and it would be my thumb in the scissors that would be giving me pain. I try not to use scissors too much as it is, but the books I have have normal pages in them. One is a children’s science book, not too many pages and it should be fun whenever I can get to it. My project list is growing. Christmas will be here soon enough again, so lets start now for then. lol
Thanks for sharing such a lovely project Cobs.
I am driving a friend this morning to the hospital for some tests, so I must get moving.
Have a great week and I look forward to Friday 🙂

    1. Hello Soozy, and may I take this opportunity of wishing you a very Happy New Year!

I do hope that you get around to changing a book, as it’s such a fun project. But you’re right – the pages of this particular book were indeed a tough thing. They were just so thick!

I hope your friend is ok.
Thanks for coming Soozy, and for staying long enough to chat. Bless your heart.

    1. This is one you HAVE to try Nancee. It’s a lot easier than you might think. You just have to think a step ahead.

It’s far easier to do than to tell you how to do it. Seriously. Give it a go. Buy a book from a charity shop if you don’t have one that you don’t like enough to take a craft knife or scissors to.

It was such a wonderful make – although the cutting through those board pages was difficult … – a bit like sawing down a tree with a craft knife! lol.
