Live your Dreams ~ Mixed Media Tag Art

I don’t venture this far into Mixed Media normally but I needed to break away from the madness of Christmas Card Making (yes, it has begun).  There’s nothing like getting almost all your crafty stash out on your desk in order to choose bits and bobs to team together so you can make a bit of Mixed Art,  to stop you from becoming stir crazy when trying to produce many greetings cards which are all different, but on the same ‘theme’.

I began with a plain tag.  The tag itself is quite a large-sized plain Kraft tag, from a book of Tags made by Craftwork Cards – which I bought quite some time ago, and am just coming to the end of the book.

To begin with I applied Gesso all over the tag, followed by; crackle medium;  paint;  some gauze;  and once dry, I added a variety of doodads, trinkets, baubles, etc, in wood, metal, plastic and added a variety of sizes, shapes, and colours of pearls and glass beads.

I then used Brusho’s Crystal Powders  (which I’ve talked about before on the blog here so won’t bore you to death banging on about how brilliant they are) to add colour and give the tag added depth.

The ‘Live Your Dreams’ message looks like a printed bit of paper in the photos, but in fact it’s actually an acrylic cabochon,  which has a ‘diamond cut’ effect.  I managed to take a close up with the flash on and I think you can see it a little better here….

I know the finished tag looks like it would be really thick and very weighty,  .. but it’s actually not.  Take a look …

I don’t often wander into Mixed Media Art,  simply because I have no idea what to do with the art after it’s all finished!   Although I love to play and make it …  it doesn’t really ‘suit’ my wee cottage . . .  so I have no idea what I’m going to do with whatever I’ve made,  and …  there are only so many bits of stuff that I can pass onto family before they begin to groan at the words:  “I’ve made this thing … and I wondered  . . .”.

So …  I have another bit of artwork to add to the box labelled:  ‘Pop it in here for Now’.

Hello. I'm 'Cobwebs'. I live in a wee little cottage in the South of England, aptly called Cobweb Cottage. This little dwelling really is a cobweb factory. Not inside (well, occasionally) - but outside - flipping heck! This information should give you a clue as to why my blog is called The Art of Cobwebs aka: The Cobweborium Emporium. I've been arty and crafty from a very young age, and although my crafts have sometimes turned a corner and taken me in another direction, I've always crafted in some way, shape or form. One day, in the blink of an eye, life changed somewhat for me and the consequences were many. I had to find a new way of being 'artistic'. Card making; scrap-booking; producing ATC's and ACEO's; needle felting; Polymer clay; painting- but in a more relaxed style than I had before, and sewing, - are all things which I visit, as and when life allows. I've fairy recently become a Textile Artist and am enjoying this new creative outlet very much as it offers me so much scope for letting my imagination run through a grassy field and feel the wind in my hair - (mentally, of course).   3. You do mix midea so well. I don’t have clue where to start and have a whole tall cabnet full of future projects. You are right, again, it does look really thick but surprise.. it isn’t. Must have been a fun day in your little nook .Oh yes.. Christmas cards are every where here. Almost finished with the “big” order…just need to make the boxes they will go in.
    My self clock is really screwed up with the time change. Don’t know why this happens every time. I just wish they would leave time alone. Love to the Cobs/ xoxo

      Start … I just pick things which kind of talk to each other and then I encourage them to all have a conversation in common. Like a board meeting. LOLOLOL.

      Great to hear that you’re on top of your orders. Making the boxes is the final step and then you can give yourself a treat. Cake? Special tea or coffee? Or is there a little something you’d like to buy for yourself … for being a good girl and getting that order finished and on its merry way.

      I know exactly what you mean about the self clock. I too wish they’d stop messing with the clocks. I don’t see any reason for it at all. I know there used to be, but that reason surely has long gone and we could let Mother Nature do what she knows best and simply allow the seasons to tick along at their clock rather than ours.

      Besides which … my animals suffer the change of the clocks too. They want their meals a hour earlier and cannot see that the clock says xxx. We adjust their mealtimes by a quarter of an hour, then half an hour … then three quarters till they are eventually on the right time. At which time … we have to do it all again, only the other way around! tsk tsk.

          Sadly the horribleness found on Facebook keeps me away from it, so I hope someone else will one day make Governments of the world stop messing around like this. All it takes is one Government to be the brave one to do it … after that, all the rest will slowly follow by example.

  4. A lovely piece!

    I used to make all my Christmas cards different. Each one individual! Then I learned the art of “mass production” still handmade, still a well thought out design, but only one design, and it goes much faster now. Last year I used a photo of some mittens I spun the yarn for, then knit, and took out on a snowy morning to hang on a pine tree for the perfect shot. This year, I am using a stamp and die set to make lovely ornaments. I might use different papers, but the basic idea will be the same. But I can’t start yet – loads of knitting to do for a craft fair IN JUST TWO WEEKS! Yikes!

    1. Be careful missy! One of my crochet blogging friends has ended up with a very uncomfortable RSI trying to keep up the making for a Craft Fair and she can barely use that wrist now. So just you be careful!

  7. As always Cobs you inspire me with your projects. The way you just get it altogether and come up with something fabulous. A feast for the eyes. Christmas cards (all OOAK’s for me too), are all on the go here, most days. I do love the theme of Christmas although I have to wonder why sometimes. I guess its all the wonderful family memories from way back when. xx

  8. Oh, how I’d love to browse through that pop it in here for now box. I’ll bet it’s filled with treasures. My mother, who, like you, could make anything, kept a wooden chest under her bed that my sisters, sisters-in-law and I would explore when we returned home for visits as Mom sat by urging us to take anything we wanted. And we did. Our brothers weren’t interested. Silly things. Love you Cobs. Enjoyed spending time with you today.

  10. That is a genuine work of art Cobs! I am at a loss as to how you do that. I have a feeling if I tried mixed media it would look like a glob. But then again maybe I could call it modern art cause that can tend to look globbish sometimes! And there is a new word for us…..”globbish”

    1. ‘Globbish’ …. what a wonderfully rich word that is! But … It isn’t (kind of) as ‘new’ as you might think.

      There is a word – ‘Globish’ (one b not two) – which is the name of a (sort of) new language based upon an old one – English.

      Putting it in short – it’s sort of how non English speaking people are learning a form of the English language which is kind of truncated – almost abbreviated, – but still pretty much understandable.

      However it’s not the great English we all know and love, and the main thing which seems to be missing is more structure, forming and good grammar.

  13. Oh you always bring a bright spot into my day! I have been so busy with work I haven’t had any time to be creative. To be honest I haven’t even felt like it. I have been so consumed with work and trying to keep up with everything that I haven’t even thought about trying to creat anything. I’m so far behind in my card making! I just realized it has been over 30 days since I have colored and longer since I have posted anything on my blog. I need to get busy. I think I need some color therapy this weekend. I should work as I have for the past two weekends, but I think I need a break. Thanks for putting a little creativity in my life! 🤗 to you!

      Crumbs … you need to get some help from crafty friends who will get you crafting again. If you have any real life crafty friends, maybe you need to urgently arrange a ‘play date’ for even just a Saturday afternoon, and maybe being with another crafter will draw that crafty inner – the one which is hiding somewhere – out into the open and get you crafting up a storm again!

      All work and no play made Janet a very dull gal. Have a weekend off Nancee. You need to take care of yourself. Tell work it will have to wait its turn!

  15. Hi there! I’ve been following your blog for a few months now and I’m curious. On average, how long does it take to plan out making cards? I don’t recall ever seeing anything on this inside, just the finished outside. You do such GREAT work and this looks like something I can try but I don’t know if I have the level of creativity to make a personalized holiday/birthday etc card AND write something meaningful on the inside LOL!

    1. Hello Keya. Lovely to meet you.
      Oooo.. well as for your question: “How long does it take to plan out making cards?”
      Well … that’s a bit like ‘how long is a piece of string?
      It all depends on a lot of factors. Perhaps the first being ‘do I have what I need in my stash? OR – do I need to go and buy something(s)?’

      After that … it depends on how detailed and complicated your card is going to be.

      For example – let’s take a card for Christmas – if you want to give a card the vision of a nigh sky, falling snow, and snow on the ground … you could use black or deep blue papers for the sky and white paper for the snow on the ground. Simple as that.

      But … if you want to make it more special, then you could hand paint the sky – then leave it over-night to dry. And you could do a textured snow using one of a variety of mediums which you’ll find at your craft store of choice. Then of course, you have to leave it alone to dry again.

      Then … the snow falling from the sky. Well you migh want to just draw white dots. Or .. you might want to cut individual snowflakes using a die or even cutting them individually with scissors – in the beautiful free-hand style which we all learnt as children.

      Then … what are you going to put as a feature on that snow? A snowman maybe? A penguin? Father Christmas and his sleigh? Carol Singers with candles in lamps hanging from chain on poles? Or how about children playing in the snow, throwing snowballs at each other?

      Once you’ve finished the front of the card – then comes the inside. Again – that can be simple or complicated. The choice is yours.

      Then – you still have the back of the card. Are you going to do something there? You can … if you wish to.

      Finally . . . the envelope. Now that is another choice of your own desires. You can do SO many things with an envelope so that it becomes impossible for the receiver to throw it away. But …you can keep it simple and leave it as it is.

      But … back to your question: How long does it take? . . . the answer is: How long have you got?

      Of course – added into the equation is… do you have any personal ‘discomforts’, or disabilities which can cause you a problem when playing with your crafting goodies? For things like this can also slow you down, or even put a stop to crafting some days. So of course anything like this can turn a card which someone else might be able to make in a couple of hours – to taking you four or five days, because of any personal circumstances you might have.

      If I were to give you any advice on beginning to make cards I would perhaps say start with cards which look lovely, but that don’t stress you, for you need to grow in confidence, and produce cards until you find the right card making style for you.

I agree with you wholeheartedly, I need to start “simple”. I have a tendency to over create some things and will take me days because I change my mind or see something at the last minute that would be “cute” to add and I’m back at square one or have a half mess lol. Keep up the fantastic work.
