A Weekus Horribilis, A Fabulous Blogging Friend .. and Beetroot Chutney!

The Queen once said that she’d had an ‘Annus Horribilis’ [Latin for A Horrible Year] and I agree that, at the time, she really had.

Now I can’t lay claim to having a horrible year, but  …  last week was absolutely a Weekus Horribilis (well, ten days to be precise).  One thing, then another, then another, then another – all seemed to either get the better of me, spoil things, upset me, or just made me bl**dy cross.

Individually,  they were just annoying or upsetting things which we all get – but we deal with them and move on.   However last week, they seemed to be coming at me like arrows from a battalion of Archers – all at once, – and I began to feel totally snowed under.

THEN, just when I thought it couldn’t get any worse,  the cherry on the top of the cake was delivered . . .

I received a text message from the bank.  It said that they had declined a particular transaction for the amount of   £627  – which, they told me,  was an attempt to purchase some tickets for something or other.  The text message asked if it actually was Mr.Cobs or myself trying to make this purchase.

I called the Bank straight away in a right old panic and was put through to their Fraud department.

The lady on the Fraud section told me that someone was trying to use the details of our cards to obtain goods via our account.

Once I’d told her that it wasn’t us trying to buy anything for that amount,  our cards were frozenand she told us to cut them up, – then we had to wait for replacement cards to be sent to us, with different numbers and different security codes.  Happily no money was lost (thanks to the banks security systems which stopped and waved a flag when it saw this unusual (for us) transaction appeared) and we’ve double checked every single thing on our account.  But it scared me at how easily someone had tried to get money/purchase goods out of our account.

Something has to change regarding these types of bank/credit/debit cards.  If it’s THAT easy to do this type of thieving, then the financial organisations need to come up with something way better than we currently have.

So anyhoo . . .  last week had it’s ‘moments’ which would have tried the patience of an Angel with nothing on her mind.   BUT … one truly lovely,  incredibly kind,  beautiful hearted blogger changed all of that around.  She knew nothing of the pains/strains/ and Weekus Horribilis and yet … she turned my world around and made it better.

I follow the blog of Mrs.Craft of Craft and Other Crazy Plans and she’d written a post on her blog called:  Recipe Post – Beetroot Chutney  which I found totally enthralling.  I’ve never pickled or made Chutney or even made Jam before, but I’ve wanted to.  Everything I looked at seemed really quite complicated, so it put me off.  However this post of Mrs. Crafts was written for a numbskull like me.   After reading I was raring to go.  I wanted to go and buy the equipment there and then.

Mrs. Crafts Beetroot Chutney
photograph credit:  Mrs. Craft,  – borrow from her blog post to show you her mixing her chutney

I told Mrs. Craft, (in a comment) how amazing her Beetroot Chutney sounded and that I was going to go on-line to see if I could buy the things she’d mentioned in her post, and Mrs. Craft replied saying she’d found some of the things at Aldi in their weekly specials.   That was it!!!  I went straight to the Aldi site to see what they had left.   After all, Mrs.C had used them, so they must be ok!

What happened next was a magical happening which touched me so deeply that it made me cry.

Mrs.Craft emailed me and told me that she would like to send me a jar of her Chutney!  ME!!  A WHOLE JAR OF HER CHUTNEY!!!  Just for ME

Oh my goodness!  I wrote back to her saying I would love a jar, and that I would pay her for the jar, along with the postage costs,  maybe via PayPal, or even some money in an envelope – but she was having none of it.

I gave her my details and within a few short days a box wrapped up in brown paper arrived.  The scissors were summoned the paper was cut off, and the lid to the box was gently opened.  I was so scared that this jar of delight would have got broken in the post, but no.  There is was, nestled snug in its box bed.  I was over-come with thankfulness, both for the jar not being broken but more importantly to Mrs.Craft.

But it didn’t stop there …  also in the box was one of those special thermometers which you use when making jam, to ensure that you get the mixture to the right temperature!  I had this little gadget on my list to go and buy!

But then … another surprise in the box ….  a Handmade Card with a Unicorn on the front.  Of course, this wee Unicorn looks exactly like the Unicorn I keep in my back garden!  How did she know?  *GASP*

BEETROOT CHUTNEY made by Mrs.Craft b

Mr. Cobs laughed at me as I began to bubble.  Tears welled up in my eyes and tipped over the edge of them and I sat there sniffling and snuffling as he chuckled.

See … here’s the thing;  If someone is horrid to me I cry.  But if someone is nice – well then I cry too.  I blubber and bubble and get all sniffly.  People don’t even have to be nice to me.  Someone being nice to anyone will set me off.  Kindness’s which come from the heart are the things which can start me off and I become like a tap which won’t turn off.

tsk tsk…  like Cobs Snr says …  I’m a blubber baby.  But I don’t care.  I’d rather be one of those than one of the other things.

I have thanked Mrs.Craft, and I take this opportunity to publicly thank her for this incredible kindness which she’s shown me and which has totally blown me away.

Please do go and visit her blog.  I know you’ll love her just as much as I do.  She’s lots of fun, and if she can put up with me then she must be brilliant!  (There are links to her blog, and to the Beetroot Chutney post, above.  They’ll open in another page for you).

BEETROOT CHUTNEY made by Mrs.Craft A

I’ve found a place to buy one of those heavy bottomed saucepans and am planning a trip to buy one, hopefully this week.  So . . . If I don’t poison anyone, expect a blog post about the results.   [insert fearful face]  lol

I made Mrs.Craft a handmade card to say thank you … and I was going to share it with you in this post, but I’ve talked the hind leg off a donkey, so I’ll shut up and share the card with you in another post, another day.

Thank you so much for coming and sharing my Chutney with me.  Oh … nearly forgot to tell you….  I have no idea (yet) what the Beetroot Chutney tastes like because I’m saving it until Christmas, at which point I’ll have the Opening of the Jar Ceremony and all the family present will have a taste with some cheese and crackers.  (Can’t wait!  YUM).

May your Monday have been wonderful and may your tomorrow be truly blessed.

Sending great big squidges from my corner to yours.

Author: The Art of Cobwebs - aka:- thecobweboriumemporium

Hello. I'm 'Cobwebs'. I live in a wee little cottage in the South of England, aptly called Cobweb Cottage. This little dwelling really is a cobweb factory. Not inside (well, occasionally) - but outside - flipping heck! This information should give you a clue as to why my blog is called The Art of Cobwebs aka: The Cobweborium Emporium. I've been arty and crafty from a very young age, and although my crafts have sometimes turned a corner and taken me in another direction, I've always crafted in some way, shape or form. One day, in the blink of an eye, life changed somewhat for me and the consequences were many. I had to find a new way of being 'artistic'. Card making; scrap-booking; producing ATC's and ACEO's; needle felting; Polymer clay; painting- but in a more relaxed style than I had before, and sewing, - are all things which I visit, as and when life allows. I've fairy recently become a Textile Artist and am enjoying this new creative outlet very much as it offers me so much scope for letting my imagination run through a grassy field and feel the wind in my hair - (mentally, of course). I love to create. To make things. I truthfully believe that the best gifts in the world are those in which you've given your time, rather than your cash. Thank you so much for visiting. Please visit my blog (link below) and have a look around. I'm sure you'll find something to enjoy, even if it's only a handful of jokes! (yes, seriously - there really are jokes!) Wishing you a truly blessed rest of your day! ~ Cobs. <3

  1. What a horrid thing to happen. I’m so pleased you liked your little parcel, it doesn’t cost much to be kind. I hope you enjoy the chutney, and your photography has made everything look lovely! Thank you for the link too. X PS I will share photos of your lovely card in a post (maybe tomorrow after I’ve been to work!) X

    1. Hello Magical Mrs. Craft! 🙂
The bank thing … yes, it made me feel dreadful and really scared that someone could do something like that, apparently so easily too!

I’m so glad you like the photographs of your gifts to me. I tried them in loads of different places in the house, in the craftroom and in the end Mr.C suggested that white shelf on the wall in the living room. (He made that shelf) … and they looked perfect there. I think it’s the soft white of the walls allows the chutney, the thermometer and the fabulous card to speak for themselves.

No worries about sharing the card … I know how time consuming posts can be so please don’t stress about it.
Thank you so much, again, for the wonderful gifts. They mean the world to me. Seriously.
      Bless you.

      1. He made a very nice shelf! I can’t crochet at the minute as I overdid it and hurt my wrist so I’m blogging more than normal. That’ll teach me for taking part in such dangerous activities! I will see how worn out I am after a day in y4 lol. I have no idea where to start photographing the card as every time I look at it I spot a new pretty thing! X

        1. I had to make you something special and different, because you’re just so lovely.

I read about your injury. It’s true what they say … too much of anything can be a bad thing. But heck … who knew you could injure yourself doing something like crochet???!!!

I’ve just told Mr.C that you said he made a very nice shelf … and now he’s giggling as he’s trying to do the cats supper. Bless.

    1. And I love you right back Beverly. Lots and lots and lots. Mr. Cobs says ‘thank you very much’ … and he’s gone all bashful and unnecessary now! LOLOL Aw Beverly, it’s a long time since I’ve seen this old man be so wriggly and silly like you’ve made him! lol.

No, I’d never heard of it either … so I’m REALLY looking forward to trying it out. Mrs. Craft has already tried a jar and she says it’s lovely … so I’m really looking forward to it.

The horribilis … I’m hoping that it’s been shown the door and that it won’t be paying another visit.

Love you to pieces Beverly. Please take care and watch the weather turning colder. Make sure you wrap up a little warmer, as Autumn is beginning to creep up on us.

      1. Are you sure? About the weather. I think I saw where we will be 98 this weekend. Not much chance of being to cold just yet. But it would be nice to be a little cooler. Oh, and remember…I am just 37 so I can take it.

        1. I’m just 7 and a half years old, and I can’t take it at all! lol.

Well here, in my corner, Autumn has roared in. Rain (TONS OF IT) and winds which have blown my little garden around and I barely recognise it now. My Nasturtiums were clambering over the white painted picket fence – and it’s now lay on the floor in wet pieces.

My big pots of Geraniums have been blown to smithereens, and each flower head has only one or two petals left on each head. The rest of the petals are on the decking.

Two of my majestic Palms (pot grown and doing really well) were blown over yesterday. Not sure if they’re damaged, but it was just a case of picking them up and popping them somewhere safe in the hope of saving them. (No time to check them over – the wind was awful and the rain lashing down!)

So yes .. here in Cobweb Towers …. Autumn is being delivered in bursts and it’s cold brrrrr.

  3. What a marvel Mrs. Craft is!! When I commented on a blog about coleus plants, the blogger mailed me an envelope of seeds she had gathered from her own plants. Aren’t co-bloggers great???? I hope to do a kindness for someone someday.

    1. How wonderful of your blogging friend to send you some seeds!

She must be someone who lives within your own country Anne, for I have learnt from experience that you can’t send seeds to another country unless they are in an approved packet, and if they are of a strain of seed that are on the allowed list.

I tried to send some of my mothers Poppy seeds to someone, but Customs removed them and put a note in the parcel explaining that the seeds weren’t allowed unless they were in a proper packet.

Mrs. Craft … you’ll have to visit her blog Anne. She is, like you say, a marvel. Such an incredible lady and her posts are a joy to read.

Thank you so much for coming Anne. It’s truly lovely to see you.

  7. Sorry you have gone through the wringer Cobs, and it’s not fair that we have to iron out those kinds of wrinkles in life. Scary? yes. I got my wallet stolen once and of course it has all your “life” inside. I was crying and quite irate at the same time. How could someone steal my wallet from my “area” at work. It must have been someone we allowed to use the washroom. We soon had a sign, NO WASHROOM PRIVILEGES DUE TO THIEVES AMONGST US.
The weather here has become fall overnight. It is raining lightly right now but we may get some thunder and lightening later on. Not something my little Chihuahua girl likes at all. She shakes and tries to hide somewhere, anywhere. We have needed rain for so long and now we have it, thank goodness as we still have 150 fires still burning in our interior. This has been the worst year in decades for fires and soooo many people lost everything they have, and only have what they have packed. Farmers losing their crops, their livestock, buildings, homes and the rest of it. Very sad. We had such a hot spell for so long, not normal temps for here at all. I was miserable! My old Boston boy Stan was miserable but the Chihuahua’s seemed to do alright. I am glad that is over. I just wonder what mother nature will have in store for us this winter??
I have never had beet chutney before, never even heard of beet chutney. Mango chutney really is the only one I have had, oh and maybe something else at the wonderful east Indian restaurants we have here.
Love that Mrs. Craft sent that wonderful little goodie package to you including the thermometer for making sure it is the right temp when you do cook your own. I can’t believe that you haven’t even made jam tho’ Cobs. Even I have made jam. LOL I do enjoy a good cobbler too. Peach is a good one.
Well, time to shower and get comfy and watch a bit of the telly before bed.
Stay well and creative! Remember to do something you love everyday. Sometimes we forget. Brush off that bad week and smile.
    hugs from Victoria BC

I was shocked to hear that you had your wallet (we call them purses, and your purses, we call handbags. lol) .. you had your wallet stolen .. AT WORK! of all places. I can imagine the hurt and upset this caused you.

Autumn has been delivered to you too, eh?
Your poor baby … she doesn’t like the thunder and lightning – well I can appreciate that because I don’t like it either. I think it’s the ‘Force of Nature’ which I fear. Nature is brilliant and it has he most incredible things which it shares with us … but it also has some fearful things, and Nature can show her ‘Force’ to a greater degree sometimes, which is scarey.

With regard to the Beetroot Chutney – no I hadn’t heard of this before either, so I’m really looking forward to trying it.

Thanks for coming Soozy and for leaving such a fabulous comment.

Its happened to me a couple of times. The money was always promptly put back into the bank but it is a bit of a inconvenience waiting for new cards to arrive especially in this day and age when no one carries cash anymore.

Someone tried to get money out of your account … TWICE??? Hells Bells with knobs on!
You know only too well how it feels then.

Yes, waiting for new cards to arrive was a bit of an inconvenience, as, like you say, we carry very little actual cash with us anymore. I’m looking on that as a positive thing as it meant I shunned going out shopping for lovely things – so I saved money. 😉

This week is turning out to be a much better week. But then, anything would be an improvement on last week!

        1. Y’know Beverly … I think you’re right.
You’d think that in this day and this age, with all the ‘improvements’ they apparently are making to our lives (from a gazillion TV channels to a little black tube which you can ask questions of, being sited in homes – which by the way I have a HUGE distrust of, but that conversation is for another time) – you’d think that they’d stop inventing all that carp, and instead put their brains into solving these crimes which are attempted thefts of our money from our accounts. There HAS to be a way of this being made impossible to do.

    1. I’m stunned at how many of us I’m discovering that have had the same or similar things happen regarding their bank/debit/credit cards, and some faceless human being attempting to steal from us.

I’m so happy to hear, Chicken, that your bank were quick to act like ours was and locked your account up tightly. I agree, it is scarey, and yes the wait for the new cards did seem l-o-n-g. I began to fret that the new cards had got ‘lost’ (read stolen) in the postal system, which caused me even more concern and worry.

Mrs. Craft is indeed a wonder. She’s an incredibly lovely person and I don’t think I’ve read a post from her which I didn’t engage with. She just has this wonderful way of chatting in her posts which makes everything such a joy to read.

Mrs. Craft …. Isn’t she fabulous?? She get’s my Star of the Universe vote.

And … my bank. Once I’d got over the shock of someone wanting to do that …. then the fear that they could do it again and totally wipe us out if they so wished… then I got sensible and admit got a little angry about it. Had the bank turned up with them in handcuffs, I’d have been hard pressed not to pop him/her on the nose and kick them on the shin. Hmptfff!! 😡

Amethyst … do you know, out of all the jewellery I have, I don’t think I have any amyethyst … apart from some tiny tear drop shapes which hang off some earrings along with other tear dropped shape gems. (like rain lol).

But … I have noticed over the last few days that my [birthday stone] Peridot ring seems to mood alter and make me more positive, so I’ve been wearing that daily and I think it really does work.

I can’t believe that I don’t have any amethyst though. I’m going to have to raid my jewellery boxes and have a good look. If I don’t find some, I’ll find a stone on-line and buy it Samantha.

Thank you for metaphorically doing the beating and kicking. You and I …. together we make a gang. A very small gang, but a very powerful one.

Mrs. Craft is indeed a wonderful lady. So, so lovely.

Thank Heavens your bank stopped those horrible people from taking all your money from your account! It must have made you shiver with the thought of what could have happened had the bank not been on the case that day.

Lovely to see you Kim. Sending squidges.

      1. Yes we were abroad at the time so it was a relief to know that the account was monitored! I think l made a one time stupid mistake of clicking on a link in a scam email (when it was unheard of), l thought came from the bank, never will make that mistake again.
Things are a little hectic right now so sorry not visiting much but always visiting in the background. Hugs x

            1. Congratulations on the house sale. Well done.

Have you picked an area where you’d like to live? If so … contact as many estate agents in and around that area and get yourself on their list. Tell them the things which are absolutely non negotiable (eg three beds, loo downstairs, garage … etc etc) and then tell them things you’d kind of like but you’d be willing to give up if it’s the right property.

Give them permission to email and call you on your phone if they come up with something in your price range and in the area (or as near to it). They’ll then be able to contact you straight away if something comes in that day. You’ll be first on the list to hear about it.

Very good luck Kim. It’s a dirty job and a difficult one too. Been there. Done that. (and yes … lost three properties in the process. But .. we got here in the end)

  15. Oh my, what an awful experience! Luckily I have never had anyone attempt to access my bank account, but have had someone charge some things to one of my credit cards. I immediately called the credit card company and they, too, sent me to the fraud department. It appears that whomever it was, was going to the spa daily and charging my credit card! The charges were a lot! I didn’t have to pay them and they sent me a new card. I agree, something has to be done. I am very careful to shred everything with my name, address, or any other personal information on it, including envelopes. I have also signed up for a service that monitors all of my credit information. It is horrible that we have to do that! There has to be some other way to be able to use your own funds without the threat of theft. Most cards here in the US did have a “chip”. Instead just a strip on the back that they say was readable by people who had a reader if you just walked by their machine! Perhaps they should go to some kind of fingerprint verification. That would be extremely hard to duplicate! Oh my, I do seem to be rattling on….I have so much to do in the next few days to get ready for our little “vacation”. I do have most of my craft things packed! Those were first! Ha! I just want to get this year over with….next year HAS to be better! This year we have replaced the roof, had to replace the air conditioning in our home, I had to buy a new washer, and a dryer, and a dishwasher. We also have to replace our pool liner, but before they can do that, we had to replace the concrete around the pool! Yuck! It’s always something!
I’m so glad you received such a great gift when you needed it! If I was closer, I would have come by with some goodies to brighten your day. We can all use that now and then.
Well, I must be moving on…I have several more blog posts to catch up on.
May you have a better today and an even better tomorrow! 🙂

    1. Hello Nancee 😀
My goodness you really have had a very expensive and very trying year. Aw Nancee, I had no idea how bally awful the year has been. No wonder you are so looking forward to your holiday. Time away where someone else takes the strain is exactly what you need.

With regard to the attempt to charge our account for over £600 for tickets to or for something or other… I think your right – fingerprint is the way to go .. but .. I’m no sure how it would work for on-line purchases. Although I was only given scant details of the attempted transaction, I got the distinct impression that this charge for the ‘tickets’ was an on-line attempt, and I did wonder if perhaps who ever was trying to steal our money like this, perhaps attempted to get these tickets delivered to a totally different address than our own. I wondered if the amount, combined with he unusualness of the purchase – for the amount paid, added to the change of address for delivery …. I wonder if this whole ‘difference’ to our usual way of spending made alarm bells start ringing and caused them to refuse to pay. Whatever it was, I’m filled with thanks that it happened. Goodnes know what it could have led to.

Have a wonderful holiday Nancee. Come back refreshed and ready to take on the world!

    1. Hello beautiful Tami. 🙂
Mrs. Craft really is, indeedly doodly, totally wonderful. I love her to pieces for being the person she is. Oh .. and talented?!!!! She’s a whiz at making Fairy Bootees and Mermaid Slippers.

We are alike Tami. Both cry babies for all sorts of reasons. My Grandma told me I was too tender hearted. I don’t think there is a medicine or tablet which will put that right, so I’m happy to live with it. 😀
