The Friday Post ~ 8th September 2017

Happy Friday!  This week has flown by in one way, and yet it’s dragged it’s feet in another.

Something was missing in my life.  It’s seemed to be a long stretch of a week.  Then I realised what it was.  It was Little Cobs.  He went back to school on Tuesday so I haven’t seen him since last Saturday.  He’s a joyous handful when he’s here, but when he goes home my heart goes with him.   He’ll be here again on Saturday, and no doubt drag his  HUGE bag of cars out of his bedroom here, then he’ll search for the length of black drain pipe which I got Grandad to rub the ends of so that it wasn’t sharp, and he’ll prop the one end up on the footstool, and his cars will zoooom down the tube and we’ll find out who’s the winner!  It’s kind of his early introduction to betting.  LOL.  (No, we don’t use money or anything else.  We just use our eyes and guess which one will go the furthest)

Oh anyhoo …  look at me chatting away when what you’ve come for is some edumacation.  So let’s get going shall we?

On this Day in History

1504 – Michelangelo’s David is unveiled in Florence. Michelangelo’s David, sculpted from 1501 to 1504, is a masterpiece of Renaissance sculpture and one of Michelangelo’s two greatest works of sculpture, along with the Pietà. It is the statue of the young Israelite king David alone that almost certainly is one of the most recognizable stone sculptures in the history of art. It is regarded as a symbol both of strength and youthful human beauty.

Michelangelo’s David

The 5.17 meter (17 ft) marble statue portrays the Biblical King David in the nude, at the moment that he decides to battle with Goliath.

However; the proportions are not quite true to the human form; the head and upper body are somewhat larger than the proportions of the lower body. The hands are also larger than would be in regular proportions. While some have suggested that this is of the mannerist style, another explanation is that the statue was originally intended to be placed on a church façade or high pedestal, and that the proportions would appear correct when the statue was viewed from some distance below.

The apparently uncircumcised form would be at odds with Judaic practice, but would be consistent with the conventions of Renaissance art.

To protect it from damage, the sculpture was moved in 1873 to the Accademia Gallery in Florence, where it attracts many visitors. A replica was placed in the Piazza della Signoria in 1910.

The cast of David at the South Kensington Museum (now the Victoria and Albert Museum), had a detachable plaster fig leaf, added for visits by Queen Victoria and other important ladies, when it was hung on the figure using two strategically placed hooks; it is now displayed nearby.

In 1991, a deranged man attacked the statue with a hammer he had concealed beneath his jacket, in the process damaging the toes of the left foot before being restrained. The samples obtained from that incident allowed scientists to determine that the marble used was obtained from the Fantiscritti quarries in Miseglia, the central of three small valleys in Carrara. The marble in question contains many microscopic holes that cause it to deteriorate faster than other marbles. Because of the marble’s degradation, a controversy occurred in 2003, when the statue underwent its first major cleaning since 1843. Some experts opposed the use of water to clean the statue, fearing further deterioration. Under the direction of Dr. Franca Falleti, senior restorers Monica Eichmann and Cinzia Pamigoni began the job of restoring the statue. The restoration work was completed in 2004.

By the 20th century, Michelangelo’s David had become iconic shorthand for “culture” David has been endlessly reproduced, in plaster, imitation marble fibreglass, and lends an atmosphere of culture even in some unlikely settings, such as beach resorts, gambling casinos and model railroads.

1888 – In London, the body of murder victim, Annie Chapman, is found, disembowelled in an East London street, the second victim of ‘Jack the Ripper’.

1892 – The Pledge of Allegiance is first recited.

1900 – Galveston Hurricane of 1900: a powerful hurricane hits Galveston, Texas killing about 8,000 people.

1921 – 16-year-old Margaret Gorman won the Atlantic City Pageant’s Golden Mermaid trophy;  pageant officials later dubbed her the first Miss America.

1930 – 3M begins marketing Scotch transparent tape.

1943 – World War II: United States General Dwight D. Eisenhower publicly announces the Allied armistice with Italy.
1944 – World War II: London is hit by a V2 rocket as the first German V2 flying bombs fell on Britain, exploding at Chiswick in London, killing 3 people.

1960 – Publishers Penguin Books were charged with public obscenity for publishing D.H. Lawrence’s controversial book – ‘Lady Chatterley’s Lover’.
1960 – In Huntsville, Alabama, US President Dwight D. Eisenhower formally dedicates the Marshall Space Flight Center (NASA had already activated the facility on July 1).

1966 – In England, the Severn Bridge was officially opened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, linking south Wales with south west England.
1966 – The first Star Trek,  the landmark American science fiction television series, premieres with the first-aired episode, “The Man Trap”, on NBC.

1968 – The Beatles perform their last live TV performance on the David Frost show. They perform their new hit Hey Jude.
1968 – British tennis player Virginia Wade beat American Billie Jean King to win the US Open.

1974 – Watergate Scandal: US President Gerald Ford pardons former President Richard Nixon for any crimes Nixon may have committed while in office.

1975 – Gays in the military: US Air Force Tech Sergeant Leonard Matlovich, a decorated veteran of the Vietnam War, appears in his Air Force uniform on the cover of Time magazine with the headline “I Am A Homosexual”.  He is given a general discharge, which was later upgraded to honorable.

2004 – The NASA unmanned spacecraft Genesis crash-lands when its parachute fails to open. The Genesis spacecraft was the first ever attempt to collect a sample of solar wind, and the first “sample return mission” to return from beyond the orbit of the Moon. It was launched on August 8, 2001, and crash-landed on September 8, 2004 after a design flaw prevented the deployment of its drogue parachute. The crash contaminated many of the sample collectors, but subsequent processing was able to isolate useful samples, and as of March 2008 all of the mission’s major science objectives are expected to be achieved successfully.

OK… now it’s playtime.  (All schools have a playtime, and this one is no different) …

I will only give you links to click on that I’ve tried and tested and know for sure that there is nothing bad hiding in them.  So please rest assured that any link you find on this blog has been tested before I load it here.  I’ve been playing around with most of these links for … oh my goodness, around ten years, so I know for sure that they’re safe.

Today …  instead of a game, I share with you something that I have tons of fun on every now and again.

If you don’t have a Gravatar picture of yourself,  or a photo of yourself on your blog in your sidebar – then you can ‘build’ yourself on this website!  It’s not really you as such, but it’s ‘you’ in a cartoony sort of way.

You can build a body, a skin tone, hair, lips, teeth, eyes, glasses, facial hair,  even tattoos!  You can make it look like you … but if you were stood in a line up, no one would be able to pick you out based on that image.  lol.  Aww … look, I’ll give you the link so that you can have a play with it yourself.  It’s lots of fun… BUT …  have a look around first, and click on the things so that you know what they look like… because once you have chosen some of the things there, you can’t undo them  (some you can change – but not all of them). . . and you’ll have to start from the beginning.  Other than that, it’s a great little time waster.

click —> http://www.sp-studio.de/  …  it will open in a new window for you.

Well we’ve come to the end of the school day, here in Cobweborium Land.  Don’t you wish all your school/work days were as short as this?  A bit of fun, over a cup of coffee and time to go off and relax!  lol

Wishing you all a truly wonderful weekend.  Thank you so much for coming and spending a little time with me.  I love seeing you here.

May your weekend be everything you want it to be.  🌹

Author: The Art of Cobwebs - aka:- thecobweboriumemporium

Hello. I'm 'Cobwebs'. I live in a wee little cottage in the South of England, aptly called Cobweb Cottage. This little dwelling really is a cobweb factory. Not inside (well, occasionally) - but outside - flipping heck! This information should give you a clue as to why my blog is called The Art of Cobwebs aka: The Cobweborium Emporium. I've been arty and crafty from a very young age, and although my crafts have sometimes turned a corner and taken me in another direction, I've always crafted in some way, shape or form. One day, in the blink of an eye, life changed somewhat for me and the consequences were many. I had to find a new way of being 'artistic'. Card making; scrap-booking; producing ATC's and ACEO's; needle felting; Polymer clay; painting- but in a more relaxed style than I had before, and sewing, - are all things which I visit, as and when life allows. I've fairy recently become a Textile Artist and am enjoying this new creative outlet very much as it offers me so much scope for letting my imagination run through a grassy field and feel the wind in my hair - (mentally, of course). I love to create. To make things. I truthfully believe that the best gifts in the world are those in which you've given your time, rather than your cash. Thank you so much for visiting. Please visit my blog (link below) and have a look around. I'm sure you'll find something to enjoy, even if it's only a handful of jokes! (yes, seriously - there really are jokes!) Wishing you a truly blessed rest of your day! ~ Cobs. <3

    1. Hello Anna
LOL @ ‘small fry’ … yes, that fits the bill perfectly.
Coo, a 5’7″ baby. They don’t fit comfortably on your lap at that stage! lol.

  2. Good Friday Mrs C,
I sure know what you mean about this week ~not only has Moo returned to school but I’m back to running the gauntlet of ‘The Workplace’ after my summer caring for the aforementioned Moo !!
As always your post has been informative and thought provoking, one of the most revealing for me was the snippet about Penguin books, 1960 doesn’t sound like so long ago …until you do the maths LOL
I have googled the Galveston Hurricane the damage is unimaginable, the areas within the path of hurricane irma are in my thoughts x

    1. Good Friday to you to, Mrs.P! 🙂
I knew you’d understand the ‘missing link’.

Penguin Books . . . I know!! 1960 is just a few months ago – until I think more carefully – only then does it kind of make sense to me. I had to check that I had the correct year – it just seemed too ‘close’ to where we are now.

The Galveston Hurricane – I included that particularly because of Irma happening right now. Like you – the people who are in the path are very much in my thoughts. It’s not a place I would like to be right now.
We think, here in the UK, that the 85/90 mile an hour winds are scarey … so I don’t even want to imagine what that hurricane must feel like.
      God help them.

Hope The Workplace isn’t too busy at the moment, and that you can ease yourself back into the chair … dressed in your new suit(s) … and get ‘up to speed’ gently.

Sending big, new suit, squidges ~ Cobs. x

  3. Happy Friday! Thank you for sharing a coffee with me. I agree about the big gap in the days. I wasn’t ready for my two to go back to school. We have had such a fun summer and the best break in a long time. I think it helps that they are that little bit older – they don’t need my help for everything but still young enough to enjoy spending time with us. My baby daughter is 9 in a week!!!

Anyhoo, hilarious about the fig leaf to protect Michelangelo’s David’s modesty and just awful about the Galveston Hurricane. I was fascinated with hurricanes, earthquakes and volcanos etc when I was younger but now I’m older all I see are people loosing everything and the sheer destruction of them.

Right I must clear the lego carpet that has evolved over the summer. Hannah xx

    1. Ohhh… a baby at 9 years old!!! You’ll just have to have another one Hannah. We need babies in our lives. (Thankfully … I’m a grandma now so Little Cobs is filling that gap for me. Joy of Joys! lol)

The fig leaf … yes, that tickled me too. It was hung on the wall with two nails … even more laughter! (I have a weird sense of humour, but I think you do too, so we understand each other! lol)

Agree … as I’ve grown older and seen more on the news about how destructive earthquakes, hurricanes and volcanic erruptions are, I’ve grown to fear any news which contains those words.

Lego carpet… ohhhh know that feeling only too well.
Why is it that half an hour after you’ve finished cleaning it all up and put it all safely away …. do you find that one bit of lego on the floor that you didn’t notice at the time???
I reckon that Lego is actually alive. It just moves slowly, like rocks do. lol

OK… I’ve reached the end of medication …. I need to find matron for some more! 😀

      1. Ha ha, my baby days are over I think. I am the wrong side of 35 now and all my pregnancies were considered high risk (long story which makes people sad so I won’t bring you down!) so I will just have to appreciate my nephew and feel relieved that I don’t have to go through more grisly teething days 😀

The Lego carpet is still there – I didn’t feel strong enough (not enough chocolate and far too early for a glass of wine for that) and reasoned that its nearly the weekend so it would only end up a mess again. I have a black rug with bright colours on it rather similar to Lego colours – you never see the missed bricks until you step on them. Ouch.

Lego has to be alive – how else does it end up everywhere?!

Thank you for brightening my day Cobs. Hxx

        1. Ohhh and you for brightening mine Hannah.
I knew from the very first time I read your blog that you were someone fabulous – and see… I was right! You’re not just fabulous but fabulous PLUS A WHOLE LOT MORE!

I’m so blessed to have you in my life.

I’m with you all the way on the Lego carpet. It is the weekend and they’ll only get it out again, so leaving it was the wise thing to do. And besides … it would take up time which you need to go and shop for more chocolate. See? Friends help friends out with excuses when they need them. lol

YES LEGO IS ALIVE! It’s trying to take over the planet, and I am of the belief that it’s doing it too!

Oodles of love and squidges Hannah. Have a great weekend ~ Cobs. xxx 🌷

            1. I thought of you a couple of days ago …. I was out at the local shops and as I came out of one shop on my way to the Co-op I saw something on the ground …. I stopped and looked closely … it was a Lego Brick! I smiled to myself as I picked it up and thought … “This is a message from Hannah!”
It’s now on the windowsill in the Kitchen, stood there like an ornament. An instant smile each time I look at it because it reminds me of you. lol

Today seems like a dream. beautiful outside, cool and no humidity….but then we know a monster is fast approaching and it is going to just awful. Hard to get my mind around doing anything fun. Heavenly Father we ask for your mercy on the people in the path of Irma and the people in Mexico.
#3 got home yesterday and he and GT came by to give me that much needed hug last evening. It is the simple things that make life worth living. Like blog friends. XOXO

    1. Aw Beverly you’ll never know how good that was to read – #3 is home safely. BRILLIANT! All’s right with Beverly World. I feel as if you can actually inflate your lungs properly now.

Lego … I’m totally useless at it. TOTALLY. Little Cobs knows I am, but he still thrusts his lego box containing all the lego we have here in our cottage, into my hands with the words: “Make something Grammy”. He says it with a cheeky smile playing around his eyes because he knows I’ll sweat blood and tears over it and come up with something that falls wwwwaaaaaay short of what he was expecting.

His mummy however …. aww, she’s a whiz kid with Lego. She will sit and build things for him so that when he comes home from school he’ll have a surprise. Bless her heart.

I join you in your prayer for the safety of people who live in the path of Irma. This is a wicked, mean hurricane and I ask the Lord to help those people who are going to need His help.

This hurricane is such a worry to me. I feel sick to the stomach over it, and fear the unpredicability of it. It rips through the land destroying so much. I want it to be over. I want it to fizzle out. I want it to meet that which will remove it’s force.
I want people, their homes and animals to be safe.
Sending you love Beverly. ~ Cobs. xxx

  5. Oo er, some naughty bits in today’s (yesterday’s) post. Love the statue facts! Also I didn’t know Pink was that old. The novelty of the kids being back at school is alive and well here and hasn’t worn off (though I do miss them a teeny bit at times!) Have a lovely weekend with the little one x x

    1. Hello Mrs. C. 😀
Pink … I know, I double checked that one because I felt she had to be younger than that.

Naughty bits? Ohhh… do you mean the photo’s of the statue and the sentence about something not being quite the correct thing for his faith?

I can remember only too well that feeling when my girls went back to school when they were little. I felt a mixture of high elation which was brilliant …. and also bereft. I missed them and their little laughs, the joy, even the odd moan.
But … It gave me the chance to move all the furniture around so that I could deep clean and make everything look fresh and tidy again. Didn’t last long. They came home from school and trashed the place, but hey … it was clean for a time. LOL

  8. Oh wow, some interesting facts you have passed along this week. Where do you find all of this information, or should I say how do you come up with such interesting items each week? I so look forward to reading them! I was a little slow in reading this week, with the hurricane heading to Florida and then into Georgia, I was a little preoccupied with watching what was going on. I have family in both states…luckily everyone is okay. Hopefully, this week is much better than last! I’m starting to get things ready for our vacation…stamping images to take with me to color while relaxing! So looking forward to 10 days away! So glad our little vacation spot was missed by the hurricane! They got some rain, but luckily missed the heaviest! Yeah! I would have really been bummed had it hit the area we visit! Waiting a year to return is a long wait…don’t think I could have waited 2 years! LOL! 🙂

  9. Dearest Cobs,
It seems I have crocheted myself into a hypnotized stupor because I can’t believe here it is almost the end of the month and I’m just now catching up on your posts! I seem to be missing several days from my life. Oh dear, I hope that I wasn’t a victim of an alien abduction! That would explain why I feel like September has just started and it is really more than 2/3 gone!!
I should set up cameras so that I can find out what it is that I’m up to which makes me lose all track of time. Hmm if it’s not an alien abduction scenario the only other thing that makes sense is a Rip Van Winkle situation. In any event I shall get to the bottom of my time vortex mystery!!
Sending you an extra load and bunch of blessings to hold you over in case I disappear in a time warp again!
