The Friday Post for 25th August 2017

Happy last Friday of August, this year!  There are exactly 122 days until Christmas.  There.  I said it.  I’ve put up with it being said over the last couple of weeks and I’ve finally said it myself.  It’s scary when I think about it.  So ….  I’m not going to.

Instead, let’s find out together about what happened on this day in history, shall we?

Ready?  OK, let’s go…

1768 – James Cook begins his first voyage.

1830 – Stephenson’s locomotive ‘Northumbrian’ took a trial run to prepare for the opening of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway, Great Britain. . Actress Fanny Kemble rode on the footplate, the first woman to do so.

1835 The New York Sun perpetrates the Great Moon Hoax. “The Great Moon Hoax” was a series of six articles that were published in the New York Sun beginning on August 25, 1835 about the supposed discovery of life on the Moon. The discoveries were attributed falsely to Sir John Herschel, perhaps the best-known astronomer of his time.  You can read more about this here:  Wikipedia; Great Moon Hoax(it will open in another window for you.).

1910 – Yellow Cab is founded. The original Yellow Cab Company based in Chicago, Illinois is one of the largest taxicab companies.  Independent companies using that name (some with common heritage, some without) operate in many cities in a number of countries. Many firms operate with drivers as independent contractors. In some cities, they are operated as cooperatives owned by their drivers.

Related companies include The Hertz Corporation, Yellow Roadway and the Chicago Motor Coach Company, which was acquired by the Chicago Transit Authority.

1916 – The United States National Park Service is created. The National Park Service (NPS) is the United States federal agency that manages all National Parks, many National Monuments, and other conservation and historical properties with various title designations. It was created on August 25, 1916, by Congress through the National Park Service Organic Act in order to protect areas designated as national parks.

It is an agency of the United States Department of the Interior, which is a Cabinet Office of the executive branch, overseen by a Secretary nominated by the President and confirmed by the Senate. Most of the direct management of the NPS is delegated by the Secretary to the National Park Service Director, who must now also be confirmed by the Senate. The NPS oversees 391 units, of which 58 are designated national parks.

1917 – The Order of the British Empire (OBE), and the Companion of Honour (CH), were awarded for the first time

1919 – The world’s first international daily air service began between London and Paris.

1940 – The RAF made the first air raid on Berlin.

1942 – The Duke of Kent, youngest brother of King George VI, was killed in a plane crash during a war mission to Iceland. He was the first member of the Royal family to be killed on active service.

1944 – Paris was liberated as the Germans surrendered. General Charles de Gaulle entered the capital of France after French and US troops forced a German surrender. BBC News Report plus video footage of the news

1967 – The leader of the American Nazi party, George Lincoln Rockwell, was shot and killed by a sniper at a shopping centre in Arlington, Virginia. George Rockwell was known as the “American Hitler”. Minutes after the shooting a man was arrested and charged with his murder. BBC News Report on the day

1986 – Britain staged its first street motor race – along roads around the centre of Birmingham – Englands second city (London being it’s first).

Born on this Day

1930 – Sean Connery, Scottish actor

1938 Frederick Forsyth, English author

1946 – Charles Ghigna (Father Goose), American poet and Children’s Author

1949 – Gene Simmons, Israeli-born musician (Kiss)

1954 – Elvis Costello, English musician

1958 – Tim Burton, American film director of (amongst many other things) two Batman films, Edward Scissorhands (1990), Ed Wood (1994), Sleepy Hollow (1999), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Corpse Bride, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, The Nightmare Before Christmas

1961 – Billy Ray Cyrus, American singer and actor

1970 – Claudia Schiffer, German model

And here’s a new addition to The Friday Post …

Thought for the Day

I had a conversation recently, with a much-loved friend who is a ‘non-believer’.  An Atheist.  Our conversation went from belief to non belief and back again, as we talked and chatted over our personal view points, until we came to death and what happens when you die.

Now my own experience of death is very limited.  I haven’t yet left this earth – I’ve only sat with others as they’ve done it (although I did technically ‘die’ on the operating table once – but that’s a story for another time).  But, it’s interesting that, when they ‘go’,  people who ‘die’ leave their bodies behind.

You see, to me, this suggests that existence cannot be a purely physical phenomenon.  What makes the difference between a human being and a human shell?

Breath.  Plain and simple.

And what drives that breath?

Well, some people call it heart, and some call it soul.  Some call it energy and some call it spirit.  But whatever it is – it has no weight, no mass, no size, and no visibility.  Therefore it has no time.

So in that case . . .  how can it ever die?

Like I’ve always believed:  …. you can’t die for the life of you.

There’s something to think about over the weekend, eh?  🙂

coffee cup

Well that about wraps up this weeks offerings of educationalmalisation . . .  EXCEPT …. every good school has play time.  Time out in the world, breathing in and out and having a little fun.  So … in order to accommodate this bit of play time, I’m sharing with you a game that I’ve played on and off for years.

Now I don’t know if I play it for the beautiful sounds of the bubbles popping – aww, so gentle and SO musical – or if I just try to beat the game.  (Because I do like a challenge).  However  here it is, and I encourage you to have a few plays with it until you get the feel of it and begin to enjoy it.  BOOMSHINE  is the game’s name.  (the link is the name).  When the page loads (in another window), simply click on ‘Play’ and the bubbles will load within that little screen.  They float about in various different colours and all you have to do is click somewhere on the screen where you’ll score the most bubbles bursting.  Each time you get over the required amount the screen back colour will change to a pale silver colour.  The opening page each time, will tell you how many bubbles you need to get – or how many you scored.  And … while the bubbles begin bursting, there is a little counter down in the left hand corner.  Do enjoy.

Have a truly lovely Friday and a wonderful weekend.

Sending squidges from my house to yours.

Author: The Art of Cobwebs - aka:- thecobweboriumemporium

Hello. I'm 'Cobwebs'. I live in a wee little cottage in the South of England, aptly called Cobweb Cottage. This little dwelling really is a cobweb factory. Not inside (well, occasionally) - but outside - flipping heck! This information should give you a clue as to why my blog is called The Art of Cobwebs aka: The Cobweborium Emporium. I've been arty and crafty from a very young age, and although my crafts have sometimes turned a corner and taken me in another direction, I've always crafted in some way, shape or form. One day, in the blink of an eye, life changed somewhat for me and the consequences were many. I had to find a new way of being 'artistic'. Card making; scrap-booking; producing ATC's and ACEO's; needle felting; Polymer clay; painting- but in a more relaxed style than I had before, and sewing, - are all things which I visit, as and when life allows. I've fairy recently become a Textile Artist and am enjoying this new creative outlet very much as it offers me so much scope for letting my imagination run through a grassy field and feel the wind in my hair - (mentally, of course). I love to create. To make things. I truthfully believe that the best gifts in the world are those in which you've given your time, rather than your cash. Thank you so much for visiting. Please visit my blog (link below) and have a look around. I'm sure you'll find something to enjoy, even if it's only a handful of jokes! (yes, seriously - there really are jokes!) Wishing you a truly blessed rest of your day! ~ Cobs. <3

  1. It’s Gene Simmons birthday? Hmm. We just checked out a library book about rock and roll and there is a picture of Kiss all make-upped out! I love these posts. I could print it off and have a whole curriculum for a homeschool day. That game sounds pretty fun. I will have to look. Now for the most important question, you died on the operating table???

    1. LOL… I did indeed, but like I said … perhaps a story for another day – as it does have more to it and it’s the reason why I don’t fear ‘death’. … You can’t ‘die’ for the life of you.

It is indeed Gene Simmons Birthday. It’s not my style to mention how old he is today … but his year of birth is up there so I’m sure folks can figure that one out for themselves. 😉

I’m so thrilled to hear that you enjoy these posts Jessica, and yes, I agree, it could be a day of homeschooling! Great idea!

  2. I apologise if I scared you with my Christmas countdown, but I can’t help myself! 🎅🌲 unless it’s a nice round number I tend to go by weeks… 17 on Monday 😄 looks like a good day to be born (can’t believe Connery is 87) love a lot of those stars 💖 have a good week my lovely. Squidges xx

    1. Ah you didn’t scare me Anna. The Christmas Countdown has been on the TV, Radio, even in shops and stores. Christmas cards have been on sale and retailers are pushing Christmas gift ideas into every pore of a persons body. But it’s too early. Children haven’t even gone back to school yet.

I hate that ‘things’ make us live our lives faster than they’re meant to be lived. Let us all live in the moment, for tomorrow isn’t promised to us.

Yes, Sean Connery – the Scottish James Bond – is 87 years young today. I can’t quite fathom that. He’ll live forever in my mind (and heart) as that incredible man in the Bond movies. Inside my heart he has never got any older. (and I should imagine inside the hearts of many people)!

Thank you for coming Anna, and for your lovely comment.

  3. Good Morning Miss,
I feel fully informed as to this day in history, very interesting I love history lessons, although I refuse to think about Christmas yet ~ even though it galloping towards me full pelt !!
Please Miss can I go out to play now
    Thank you Miss

    1. Yes, Ms.P … you have sat nicely and hopefully learned everything you need to learn, so off you go and play.

There will be a test this afternoon on everything you’ve learned today. lol.

Like you, I don’t want to think about Christmas just yet. I know some of us are super organised and buy their presents in January and are happy to do so. But somehow I kind of feel a little sad about it for they miss out on those wonderful moments of seeking, searching and finally finding that perfect gift for *that* person, and finding it in the six weeks leading up to Christmas. I love that feeling of Christmas which is in the air in those weeks. Being with other shoppers who are all there for the same reasons. There’s a sort of camaraderie which happens at that time and it’s a truly extraordinary feeling.

Thanks for coming Mrs.P, and for leaving the lovely comment.

Ahh the ingenuity of a child under mild pressure. I remember it well.

The promise of a test that day, next day, next week could put me into a state of panic and crying. And yet … I probably knew the subject matter, so I can’t figure out why I fretted so much. (However – I suffer ‘White Coat Syndrome’ now, so I’ve still got it…. it’s just replaced the teachers with doctors.)

Ah, well I can understand the hand crafter Christmas Presents … those need a great deal of time to make. So I fully understand that one.

I’m so glad you’re back Mrs.P. You’ll never know how much I missed you.

I so love that you enjoy these posts. It’s kind of rather nice to have a window, now and again, into years which have gone by, isn’t it. A little reminder of things we never realised we knew but when we see them again we realise we knew them all the time! LOL. So glad you like them. Bless your heart.

  5. Another lovely post Cobs 🙂 You always make me want to sit down at a table with you some where and just talk 🙂 I love talking – as I’m constantly told – but I love conversation more. I don’t like talking to someone who seems to be elsewhere via whatever device they are focused on. I think there lies my issue – when conversating I focus on the people I’m talking too and not half heatedly hmm-mm-ing as I watch my screen :).
Thank-you for your wonderful and chatty thoughts – I love to catching with them each week 🙂

What a beautiful comment. Bless your heart.
I would seriously love to be able to sit down with all my favourite bloggers, for coffee and something to nibble on (obviously it would have no calories – because we all know that when it’s eaten with friends in attendance, the calories leave the food and run away!).

I have this vision of a King Arthurs sized table with a ton of chairs, lots of cups/mugs and pots of coffee …. and us all sat around the table just chattering and having a great time in each others company.

Your right … once a week. Maybe on a Friday …. to end the week on a smile, and begin the weekend with a llightened and uplifted spirit.

Aww that would suit me down to the ground … and you too Jenni, by the sound of it.
      Perfect!

Wishing you a truly wonderful weekend, filled with smiles and happy hearts.

Ugghh at it being THAT CLOSE to christmas. I am ready for fall though!!! I have to buy a new tree this year. This years debate will be… do I want a real tree? or artificial one? If its artificial it will be one heck of a large toilet brush… just saying..

Like you I’m happy for Autumn to be heading this way, as I love Autumn. The colours, the temperature, and watching nature as God calls all things home from play and tells them it’s time for them to snuggle down and sleep.

      Love it.

I’ve already decided … it’s an Artifical one this year. Although I like the smell and look of a natural tree, I don’t enjoy the needle drop. Anyway … I have handmade ornaments which are so lovely (even if I do say so myself) and they look brilliant on any tree, so I’m going for the least worrysome. Toilet Brush it is then!

      Love you oodles. 💚

How COULD you??? 122 days till Christmas….breathe…breathe…

Ok. I was watching a very interesting programme about the Duke of Kent, lots of conspiracy theories floating around. As for death…it’s part of the eternal cycle, and as you point out, we’re all energy…energy doesn’t just switch off ( unless a fuse blows, in which case you wander around dangerously poking stuff until you find the culprit…) but we move on, almost like stepping into another room…

Lots of love to you 😺💕xxx

      (Laughing to myself here).

‘Death’ … we actually do move on, as in into another room. The door is left open, and we can still hear and see what’s going on in the room we left. Can’t ‘die’ for the life of you.

Thank you for coming, wonderful blogging friend, and thank you for staying a while to chat via a comment. Bless your beautiful heart.

I love your rationale on death. We used to have a pastor’s wife who told us “We live to die and we die to live.” I always kind of liked that thought….death is not the end but just a new beginning.

Bond … James Bond…. those words, said in that husky way all James Bond actors seem able to say it, sends a shiver of glitter down my spine. Such a wonderful feeling. (and makes me feel rather girly. lol)

The Pastor’s Wife . . . I’m thinking, would have got along great together.

  10. Oh what great tidbits of information for this day in history. I might add one more, my mother was born on this day, so today is her birthday. She is a young 83 years old. She and my Dad were married quite young and had seven of us before they went their separate ways. I am so thankful for my mother and the siblings she and my Dad gave to me. We have a rather large family, although we live apart, all come together when someone is in need. Happy Birthday to my mother! 🙂 And by the way, haven’t you had your 29th birthday yet???? 🙂 Hope your weekend is a good one!

Sending Happy Birthday Wishes to Mrs. Nancee’s Mother. I hope her day is blessed with family and friends.

      Seven of you? Oh my!
Poor mom! She must have been run off her feet.

See … no one went to exercise classes or ran round the streets back then …. and thats because they were too busy keeping house and home together. Life was so different back then, and I kind of long for those days again. (Although … not the seven children! eeek! lol).

Thanks for dropping by Nancee, and for the lovely comment.

Your historical tidbits are fascinating!! Thank you for the Christmas countdown reminder. There is nothing I enjoy more than a good challenge so I use a “Wait until the last minute” calendar for all of my holiday related things. So I now have at least 100 more days before I get started!!
On a spiritual note I believe that anything and everything are possible. The most important part of any form of spirituality is faith, trust and believing. I do hope in the afterlife we become cherubs so that we can fly and float about with the softest of feathers tickling our loved ones on earth and surprising them with rainbows, sunshine, flowers, sweet breezes and everything else that angels are in charge of making. And to secretly hold their hands as they cross the street and keep them safe and warm!
Sending you the chubbiest of cherubic blessings!

How can one not smile at that!

I think Tami that in the next step which we move on to, you and I will know each other instantly the moment we turn up. We will recognise each others souls.
And like you … I would like to care and look after people as they live on in this world of ours.

Sending you the kindest thoughts, the warmest of hugs and a heartful of love. Oh, and lets not forget some squidges!

                    1. I’ve been an excellent pianist in one of my dreams, Cobs. Can’t play a note in real life. In Music, in school, I was given two pieces of wood to knock together. The teacher saw my potential.

They were official musical pieces of wood though, they weren’t a couple of chunks of bark picked up from the local park! 😀 The odd thing was though, I didn’t know how to play them!!!

                    3. Your music teacher should have explained how important those two pieces of percussion were. Given to the wrong person they could have destroyed the whole musical piece.
She obviously saw you as a natural.
If memory serves … I think they’re called Claves.

                    4. Claves rings a bell now that you mention it, Cobs. Well, the knock the wood, but you know what I mean. The teacher was a he, and he had no time for me, it was obvious. He’d throw the board duster at me for no reason, and play the death march on the piano if I answered something incorrectly. I’m sure he thought it was fun. And I ruined the piece of music with my wood knocking deliberately. I showed him I knew the importance of timing. He never got me to play the wood again. 😎

I was thinking about you at the weekend and wondering where you were. I thought my Reader on WordPress was doing something odd as I hadn’t seen any posts from you.

I’d never heard of the moon hoax either! It was a bit of a surprise when I found that one out.

How do I do it? Well …. I set out with something in mind – which means I have a (sort of) plan and then I don’t stop until I’ve seen the challenge through to the end.
It’s nothing more than that …. because it’s certainly not talent. I’m still waiting for that to show up!
      lol

No, I don’t know how much you’ve missed me … but I do know how much I’ve missed you Aunt Beulah … and it’s one heck of a lot!!
      Glad you’re back.
Sending squidges and love ~ Cobs. x
