Netting is used for more than just catching fish.

There is a place in Peru where they have strung up netting to capture the mist as it rolls in from the sea, which in turn gives them water to use for their crops and plants.

Honest Injun! It’s the truth. They really do use nets to capture mist.

You know how sometimes, as you fall asleep, you will feel your legs jerk powerfully. This is usually accompanied by a dream about falling.  Have you ever wondered why this happens?
Well….

This is called a Hypnic Jerk. When you go to sleep at night your brain paralyses your body to stop you acting out all your dreams. It would be dangerous to act out everything that happens in your dreams, especially if you were running or fighting, not just for whoever shares your bed, but also for yourself. It’s thought that this ‘sleep paralysis’ evolved when we slept in trees, as acting out your dreams whilst sleeping high up in the branches would be even more dangerous than doing so while tucked up in bed!

As this system kicks in, you can sometimes have these hypnic jerks, where all the muscles contract suddenly and violently. For some reason, these are often associated with dreams of falling.

According to Wikipedia, pareidolia is “a psychological phenomenon involving a vague and random stimulus (usually an image) being mistakenly perceived as recognizable.”

One common form of pareidolia is seeing faces in objects (like the flying spaghetti monster on a tortilla, or the face of a cookie monster on a pizza).

There actually, is an excellent book filled with pictures of faces on objects, called Faces.  However.. I’ve found a Flickr gallery, belonging to someone called Jim Leftwich, who has been taking his own pictures of faces for a while.  The photos are all whimsical and surprising!   www.flickr.com/photos/jimwich/sets/796304/

coffee cupI am contractually obliged to make you laugh, so here’s the best joke I could come up with at this moment in time…

This is silly, but funny!

A frog goes into a bank and approaches the teller. He can see from her nameplate that her name is Patricia Whack.

“Miss Whack, I’d like to get a $30,000 loan to take a holiday.”

Patty looks at the frog in disbelief and asks his name. The frog says his name is Kermit Jagger, his dad is Mick Jagger, and that it’s okay, he knows the bank manager.

Patty explains that he will need to secure the loan with some collateral.

The frog says, “Sure. I have this,” and produces a tiny porcelain elephant, about an inch tall, bright pink and perfectly formed.

Very confused, Patty explains that she’ll have to consult with the bank manager and disappears into a back office.

She finds the manager and says, “There’s a frog called Kermit Jagger out there who claims to know you and wants to borrow $30,000, and he wants to use this as collateral.”

She holds up the tiny pink elephant. “I mean, what in the world is this?”

(you’re going to love this)

(it’s a real treat)

(a masterpiece)

(wait for it) . . .

The bank manager looks back at her and says…

“It’s a knickknack, Patty Whack. Give the frog a loan. His old man’s a Rolling Stone.”

(You’re singing it, aren’t you?  Yeah, I know you are…)…

Wishing you a truly fabulous Friday, and a wonderful Weekend.  Be kind to each other …. and to yourself,  and …  don’t take life too seriously.

Author: The Art of Cobwebs - aka:- thecobweboriumemporium

Hello. I'm 'Cobwebs'. I live in a wee little cottage in the South of England, aptly called Cobweb Cottage. This little dwelling really is a cobweb factory. Not inside (well, occasionally) - but outside - flipping heck! This information should give you a clue as to why my blog is called The Art of Cobwebs aka: The Cobweborium Emporium. I've been arty and crafty from a very young age, and although my crafts have sometimes turned a corner and taken me in another direction, I've always crafted in some way, shape or form. One day, in the blink of an eye, life changed somewhat for me and the consequences were many. I had to find a new way of being 'artistic'. Card making; scrap-booking; producing ATC's and ACEO's; needle felting; Polymer clay; painting- but in a more relaxed style than I had before, and sewing, - are all things which I visit, as and when life allows. I've fairy recently become a Textile Artist and am enjoying this new creative outlet very much as it offers me so much scope for letting my imagination run through a grassy field and feel the wind in my hair - (mentally, of course). I love to create. To make things. I truthfully believe that the best gifts in the world are those in which you've given your time, rather than your cash. Thank you so much for visiting. Please visit my blog (link below) and have a look around. I'm sure you'll find something to enjoy, even if it's only a handful of jokes! (yes, seriously - there really are jokes!) Wishing you a truly blessed rest of your day! ~ Cobs. <3

  1. LOLOLOLOL…..laughing my fool head off….I was singing that punch line and was grateful I was only doing so in my head as Chicken Grandad is sitting real close by. He already wonders about me at times and if I broke into song he might KNOW I have some brain issues!
I think I knew the dust thing and our skin bits just floating about…..one of those things I try not to think about…..
I may have to check into that chicken waste powered light bulb. I wonder if they have that in the DIY category on Pinterest?
And finally…..when I informed Chicken Grandad that he needed to eat his morning banana by peeling it from the bottom to avoid the “string things” He said, “Sometime I eat the string things…..” I don’t think I will get him converted to peeling them that way.
As always….I am now way more smarter after reading your post!
You have a blessed weekend Cobs!

    1. Hello Chicken.
Do you know, and this is the honest truth … I KNEW you in particular would be singing that song. I could practically hear you inside my head, singing it to yourself.
      LOLOLOL… how weird is that?!

The Dust thing …. when I was about ten years old, my brother was training (in his first job) to be a washing machine engineer, and he was going through training in various different types of washing machines. One of those machines was a Twin Tub.
Which was a metail oblong box, with the washing machine on the one half, and the spin dryer on the other half.

In order to try and get ahead and do some ‘homework’, he bought a tatty old twin tub and began taking it apart in order to ‘fix’ things.

He took off the knobs, and then took off the metal plate which had the settings for the knobs on it. OH MY GOODNESS!!! This was a life changing moment in both my moms and my life.

He called us both to come and look at something . . . and what we saw filled me with the greatest of sick feelings.

Under that metail plate was some open sections – boxes if you like or just empty spaces, which the section ‘walls’ held up the plate and kept it from bending or bowing. However . . . it was what was inside those empty spaces – the boxes – which lodged itself in my memory and … well, let me explain . . .

When he’d taken the plate off and put it on one side, he took a screwdriver and held it poised over the sections . . . and waving it just a tiny bit, he said … “You see these boxes? …. wait till you see this . . ” . . and taking his screwdriver he lowered it into one of the boxes and gave the contents a stir.

      “You see this stuff?” ….
      “Yes” said my mother…
“It looks just like dust which comes out of the vacuum cleaner when you empty it, doesn’t it? . . . That’s because it is . . . but this doesn’t have anything else in it other than … … … … Skin. This stuff is dead skin. It’s the skin cells from the people that have owned the washing machine. …. It’s what comes off their bodies.”

Now I’m pretty certain he explained how that dead skin got into those sections, but I don’t remember anything he said after that. I just remember the horror I felt.

Mr.Cobs has actually tried that Banana peeling from the bottom thing … and it works. He kind of squeezed the ‘navel’ at the wrong end of the banana – first a gentle squeeze one way, then another in the other way and it kind of just popped open so that it could be peeled. It’s brilliant! No strings.

Glad you got some smiles from todays post. It’s fabulous to see you. Thank you so much for your fabulous comment. Love chatting with you.

  2. How to peel a banana, dust is made up of dead skin, figures they died of lung cancer. Venus goes the opposite way, of course “she” does, she is one of a kind, unlike anything else in the solar system, and she is a woman, of sorts. 🙂
I’m sorry, I can’t even pronounce the first one lol
Been a hard week this week Cobs. My old dog, Stan, a Boston terrier, 13 years old, had his remaining eye removed due to an ulcer. He was blind in it from a cataract, but regardless, his only eye. I do know and believe the right thing was done. No eye, no pain. He kinda looks cute now, without that goopy mess of an eye. NO longer could I see the lovely chocolate brown sphere, no longer could he really express anything with it the way it was. Now, his expression is back even tho’ he has no eyes. All the nerves are still there and the muscles I guess that move the eye originally. I am not a surgeon but it is amazing. Stan is learning to navigate around the house again, crashing into things with that stupid cone of shame. Can’t wait till that is gone, nor can he, nor can my shins and calves. Boy he is a bully breed for sure. Just bulldozes into my legs with that thing. It is protecting that socket right now and for that I forgive him. 😉
Anyway Cobs, just wanted to share my week so far. Oh and heat wave?????!?!!!!! Holy cow!!! IT is TOO HOT. We are up in the 30’s Celsius. Just wild for Victoria, we are breaking records. IT is horrible!!!!
Fans, spritzer bottles and cold showers!!! Oh and even and ice cold beer is being had, not many mind you as I am not really a drinker, but it cuts the heat. 🙂
    Thanks for listening.
    Good frog joke. 🙂

    1. Ohhh dearest Soozy ….I’m so saddened to read about poor Stan having to have his remaining eye removed. Ohh heck I’ve never wanted to hug him so much as I do right now.

Bless his beautiful little heart. Luck has not been on his side with regard to his eyesight, but I’m so glad that you’re his mummy Soozy, for he has a love from you which he couldn’t find anywhere else. I hope that he soon learns the layout of your home, by memory, and that he doesn’t walk into things for too long.

I’m glad he has his cone on at the moment, because that will stop him from walking into things with his head.

Poor baby. Please give him a kiss from his Aunt Cobs and tell him that I think he’s a very brave boy.

The heat wave … Oh. My. Goodness!!! It seems to be super hot here … cooler there, Then it swaps …. cooler here and super hot there! It’s as if it’s just taking turns and doing the rounds.

At the moment, today, it’s really lovely here. Sun is out and I can feel it on my aching body … but it’s not too hot and not windy at all (which is an improvement from yesterday – the winds were shocking yesterday). FABULOUS day today.

Keep cool young lady. Stay in the shade.

  3. What day is it and why am I so late reading your enlightenment. Who knew about the banana thing? I didn’t ..now I do. And…oh…today on facebook someone was pulling not one but two looong snakes out of the dryer vent. Oh my goodness …..I don’t think they were dangerous snakes but that doesn’t matter when it is inside the house. About the dust…We…I live on a gravel road and most of my dust comes from out side. You can see it rolling in when someone crazy flies down the road. My #4 son, bless his heart, told us we were to close to the road but this is where the lot is. Sometimes I just need the windows open so it can all roll into my house. hehe Carry on Cob…we all love your bits of information. ps..look for the post. You did say you have a BD coming up. xoxo

    1. Hello lovely Beverly.
Two snakes …from the dryer vent…. oooooooh … ugggghhh! That would freak me out totally.

I can relate to the dust problem you experience from living on a road. I too used to live on a road and although I loved to open the windows, cooo the dirty dust which would come through them! (.. and the smell of the exhaust fumes!! Very much a killer. I wasn’t sad to leave that smell behind)

I’ve looked for the post you’re talking of, and can’t find it yet, so it must still be to come. I shall watch out for it. 🙂

Glad you got a bit of fun from this post.

  4. Brilliant as always, especially the joke! Many times in my career I’ve told children to open their banana ‘ the monkey way’ as it’s easier and encouraged them to be independent. Now I tell my own children that too. The dust thing makes me feel icky, especially when dust makes you sneeze and you know you’ve breathed in bits of person. Shudder. Have a lovely weekend x

Interesting about the sleeping kicks…great post and a wonderful way to start my day. Thank you very much, lots of love to you 😺💕xxx

Clouds, crumpled paper, patterns in towel nap…I could go on! You could say I have a vivid imagination! 😂 So nice to visit with you each and every Friday (even if it is Sunday morning!) 🤗

    1. LOL … I’m laughing here at your fabulous description of how this post hit your funny bone.

Like you, I see faces in things … plugs…. clouds, the damp floor after its rained and is drying again… and even the bottom of the wooden door in our bathroom. I can see three faces in the wood. sigh.

It’s fabulous to see you Nancee. So glad you got a laugh.

  8. Lol, yes, I’m singing it in my head now. Hypnic jerk is interesting. My daughter has huge problems sleeping and thrashes around half asleep until she finally drops off. I never thought there could be a name for it.

Off to try peeling a banana the wrong way (or is it the right way and humans have it wrong?!) Hxx

    1. I reckon it’s the right way and that we’ve had it wrong all the time.

Have you tried a noise machine for the daughter?
I had trouble getting to sleep some years ago so bought a noise machine (it plays about 8 different noises – from rain on a roof to the sea waves coming into the shore and back again.

I recently have had trouble getting off to sleep so searched out and found the noise machine and again, it’s working like a charm.

It has a timer on it and I can put it on for 15 mins up to one hour. I set it at an hour – just to be on the safe side … and have never got to the end of an hour awake. I don’t know how long it’s take me to fall asleep, but off I go like a baby. It’s brilliant.

See if you can find a good one, with a timer, at a reasonable price.

  9. These are such interesting facts, Cobs. I did not know about Venus or pearls melting in vinegar or Peruvians catching water with a net. Learn something new every darn day. Fabulous!

    I loved your joke. It’s a punny good eye-roller!

  10. Love the joke, Cobs… I could see all the pieces coming in, and was waiting for the punchline!
I’m always seeing objects in things that aren’t there, but my imagination runs away with me at times… I think I may have a very slight bout of that paridali thing.
And as for your calories snippet… do you burn more calories if you fall asleep in front of the television? 😀 I do that a lot and seem to be getting rounder.
