The Friday Post

Aaaand … here we are again.  I’m beginning to get a very regular feeling of deja vu around this time on a Friday, every single week.  Don’t know why that would be.  🤓

I trust this week has been good for you, and that no ‘disasters’ have happened to you or yours personally.  I’m still having some problems with blog posts not appearing in my ‘Reader’, so I’m having to do a combination of two things:  1. try to go down the list of blogs I follow to ensure that I’m caught up… and  2.  Trust to luck that I’m not missing something vital that any one has posted.  However .. if I have, poke me with the sharp end of a pencil and show me the way to what I should have been reading. (i.e. give me a link)t

So anyhoo … you’re here to have a little Friday Fun, so let’s get on with that shall we?   Because the Factoids were so enjoyed by folks a few weeks ago, I thought I’d re-visit that subject matter again and  share some more of the stuff I have (uselessly) stored in my one brain cell).

Do you have your Seat Belt on?  Air Mask fitted correctly?  Medication taken?  Incontinence Pants on?  (‘Depends’ for some of you)...  and finallyPlease Leave Your Mobile/cell Phone and your watch, and your Earrings at Reception You’ll be given a clear sealable bag to put it inside, and you will fill out your name in the special box on the outside of the bag, – in order to collect your phone after the ride.    **ENJOY!  (**that’s an order by the way!)

FACTOIDS   –   Did you know:-

Lightning strikes men about seven times more often than it does women.

A mole can dig a tunnel 300 feet long in just one night!

Carrots have zero fat content. (but you can get an unattractive orange tinge to your skin if you eat too many of them.)

Watermelons are 97% water, –  lettuce 97% water, –  tomatoes 95% water , –  carrots 90% water, –  and bread 30%

Ernest Vincent Wright’s 1939 novel ‘Gadsby’ has 50,110 words, none of which contains the letter “e.”

Don’t believe that a novel could be without any e’s?
Here’s an excerpt from page one of Wright’s  ‘Gadsby’:

“If youth,  throughout all history,  had a champion to stand up for it;  to show a doubting world that a child can think;  and, possibly, do it practically;  you wouldn’t constantly run across folks today who claim that “a child don’t know anything.”  A child’s brain starts functioning at birth;  and has, amongst its many infant convolutions, thousands of dormant atoms, into which God has put a mystic possibility for noticing an adults act, and figuring out its purport.”

Great Britain was the first county to issue postage stamps, on 1 May 1840. Hence, UK stamps are the only stamps in the world not to bear the name of the country of origin.

And from the movies:

In “Father of the Bride”,  Annie and Bryan marry on January 6.  But in the opening montage of “Father of the Bride 2” there is a framed invitation of their wedding which states that they were married on October 9.

Towards the end of the Forrest Gump, Forrest narrates that his wife died on a Saturday. When he is at her grave in the next scene, the tomb stone shows her passing on March 22, 1982, which is a Monday.

The movie with the most ‘extras’, (minor people who make up the background scenes) – was the 1982 British movie Gandhi,  which featured 300,000 extras.

Mel Blanc, who played the voice of Bugs Bunny, was allergic to carrots.

Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia  ….  is a REAL word and not one of my infamous made up ones.  It means:  A fear of long words.  Yes. Really.  Honestly.  Truthfully.  I think that’s irony at it’s best.

On average, you speak almost 5,000 words a day – although almost 80% of speaking is *self-talk  (i.e. *talking to yourself ).  . . . . . .*parents would know  about this feeling – LOL

Diamonds they say, are a girls best friend.. here are some factoids about diamonds:

Impurities lend diamonds a shade of blue, red, orange, yellow, green and even black. A green diamond is the rarest.

A diamond is the hardest natural substance on earth, but if it is placed in an oven and the temperature is raised to about 763 degrees Celsius (1405 degrees Fahrenheit), it will simply vanish, without even ash remaining.  Only a little carbon dioxide will have been released.

However... diamonds are brittle. If you hit one hard with a hammer, it will shatter

A diamond carat differs from a gold carat.  The gold carat indicates purity – pure gold being 24 carats.  One diamond carat is 200 milligrams (0.007055 oz).  The word carat derives from the carob bean.  Gem dealers used to balance their scales with carob beans because these beans all have same weight.

A diamond is 58 times harder than the next hardest mineral on earth, corundum, from which rubies and sapphires are formed.  It was only during the 15th century that it was discovered that the only way to cut diamonds was with other diamonds.

The tradition of a diamond engagement ring started in 1477 when Archduke Maximilian of Austria gave a diamond ring to Mary of Burgundy.  The modern tradition is the result of a clever advertising campaign designed by N.W.Ayer in the 1940s.

Los Angeles’s full name is El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles del Río Porciúncula and can be abbreviated to 3.63% of its size:-  L.A.

and finally….

After I made up that pile of pooh about Snails having a SatNav  (although I did rather like the idea…  and the ‘magical quality’) …  I thought I’d perhaps better find out the truth and share it with you so that you’d be able to quote your knowledge and show people how educatinamalised you are….

Snails have something like a flat foot located on the bottom side of their slime-like body’s.  There are muscles within the ‘foot’ that are constantly contracting and expanding to create movement.  It’s actually the ‘foot’ that creates the slippery trail commonly seen with snails.  It’s a special gland that excretes the slime which hardens when it comes into contact with the air.

(I still prefer my Sat Nav idea.  It sounds far more magical and special!)  lol   😊

coffee cup

Well … while you drink the last gulps of your coffee I’ll wind up this blog post with a few jokes.  Now be careful.   No choking on your coffee,  or spraying your computer screen/tablet  (or the woman sat in front of you on the bus – if you’re reading this on your cell phone) . . .

Just before I go …  a wee update on the little Robin I told you about on July the 8th [click here to be taken to the post if you missed it].  I’m filled with happy bubbles to be able to share with you that this darling little bird finally gathered up all of his courage on Wednesday this week and visited not one but both bird feeders and spent a little time enjoying everything which was on the menu.

And with that …. I shall quote one of my most favourite Gaelic blessings:  May the road rise up to meet you.  May the wind be always at your back.  May the sun shine warm upon your face;  the rains fall soft upon your fields, and,   until we meet again, …  may God hold you in the palm of His hand.

Be good to yourself,  and to others you meet today.

Author: The Art of Cobwebs - aka:- thecobweboriumemporium

Hello. I'm 'Cobwebs'. I live in a wee little cottage in the South of England, aptly called Cobweb Cottage. This little dwelling really is a cobweb factory. Not inside (well, occasionally) - but outside - flipping heck! This information should give you a clue as to why my blog is called The Art of Cobwebs aka: The Cobweborium Emporium. I've been arty and crafty from a very young age, and although my crafts have sometimes turned a corner and taken me in another direction, I've always crafted in some way, shape or form. One day, in the blink of an eye, life changed somewhat for me and the consequences were many. I had to find a new way of being 'artistic'. Card making; scrap-booking; producing ATC's and ACEO's; needle felting; Polymer clay; painting- but in a more relaxed style than I had before, and sewing, - are all things which I visit, as and when life allows. I've fairy recently become a Textile Artist and am enjoying this new creative outlet very much as it offers me so much scope for letting my imagination run through a grassy field and feel the wind in my hair - (mentally, of course). I love to create. To make things. I truthfully believe that the best gifts in the world are those in which you've given your time, rather than your cash. Thank you so much for visiting. Please visit my blog (link below) and have a look around. I'm sure you'll find something to enjoy, even if it's only a handful of jokes! (yes, seriously - there really are jokes!) Wishing you a truly blessed rest of your day! ~ Cobs. <3

  1. Fabulous Friday Post Cobs. Firstly, pleased the robin has taken the bate and eating from the feeders. I am with you and much prefer to think of snails having a sat nav!! lol! Without “e’s”! We all could become part of the “life and death brigade”… “in omnia paratus”!! ha ha! Yes, I admit it, I am a Gilmore Girls fan!! Sad I know but there you have it. We all have our guilty pleasures.
It’s in the 40’s here at the moment so we are melting quite nicely.
Hope you have a wonderful weekend.
    Hugs Flo xx
P.S. I am pleased to know that it is the carrots causing the skin problem. I can now go back on the whisky!! 🙂 🙂 🙂

    1. Do you know .. I’ve obviously lived under a rock for the past …. I have no idea of how long, for I’d only vaguely heard of ‘The Gilmore Girls’. Shocking I know.

I had to actually ask Mr.Google to give me details so that I could learn! LOL
I bet your now thinking how shocking it is that I can go through life not knowing about the Gilmore Girls. (ohh the shame!) [hangs head and looks miserable]

Weatherwise … We’ve (thankfully) cooled down for a couple of days now – and I’m SO grateful. <sleep was becoming a problem – or rather – being unable to sleep was the problem causing more problems.
BUT .. the weather reports quite confidently informed us that “the good weather will return this weekend!”

Their idea of ‘good’ is WAY different than mine is. WAY, WAY DIFFERENT. :/

I’m so glad to be of service regarding the carrots. Replacing them with Whisky is obviously better choice. No orange skin!
      LOL

      1. Cobs….Not know who the Gilmore Girls are! You obviously have a life!!! LOL! I only have two programmes/series to watch. One is the Gilmores and one is Castle. I now know the script for every episode in every series by heart for both of these programmes!!!! Save me now!!! xxx

        1. Ohhh Flo … I love you even more. LOL.
I feel like the worst friend in the world now, because . . . . I don’t watch either of those programmes! eeeeeek!

Please don’t disown me. I just couldn’t bear it without you. 😥

lol. As for saving you … I can either pop you in my savings account at the bank, or … just shout when you’re about to jump and I’ll run and catch you.

We can do a ‘Dirty Dancing’ jump and take a video to capture it on film … and we’ll break the internet with all the hits we’ll get!
          (no I don’t have a life … I just craft. LOL)
          Ooooodles of love ~ Cobs.
(Am off to the Harbour – edge of the sea – so I can be ready for when you shout “NOW”! . . . see you in a few minutes!)

          1. Where were you!!!!!? You missed me!!! lol! You know, when I was about 20 we were at some sort of village/memorial hall at a 25th wedding anniversary party (we new how to live back in the day!!!) and for a laugh I was dancing with my brother to Billy Idols Hey Little sister and he picked me up, spun me around (trying to show off) and dropped me!! It was so funny. Embarrassing for others!!!! 🙂 Sore bum for weeks!!! xxx

            1. I’ve been stood on the edge of the harbour … (peeping into the dark tinted windows of the biggest, poshest yatchs, trying to find the celebrity inside) …. stood on my tippy toes, with my arms outstretched ready and waiting …. and . . . YOU NEVER TURNED UP!

I did hear a big S.P.L.A.S.H. over by the touring boat … but I just thought that was a grockle falling into the water!
If that was you … come to the cottage and we’ll have cakes and tea, and have a bit of a giggle together.

Whoo Hooo! Party Time with Cobs and Flo 🥃 🍹 🍾 🍰
.. I’ll even let you ride my Unicorn. He’s in the back garden, chewing on some magic dust – so he’ll be ready for a little exercise!
You won’t get a sore bottom with him, he never drops anyone!

  2. Aww cobs, I look forward to these deja vu moments, they make me laugh 😀 Yellow is the most common diamond tint (which seems odd when so close to the green colour!) and I’m beyond thrilled your little red-breasted visitor is back and in good health. Much love, Anna x

    1. Hello Anna! Happy Friday. 😀
Great to see you. Have to admit … I quite like the Friday Posts – although they seem to take me all week to get ready. I do a bit at a time as things come to mind. (Although, I forget to add a lot of things as they come back from the journey of No Return inside my head! By the time I get to my ‘puter, I forget what it was I was going to add! LOL)

Colours of Diamonds … I have to admit that I like my diamonds to be the tried and trusted clear. I do have one blue diamond set into the wings of a butterfly, but there are more blue stones – which I think are sapphires, but (don’t tell Mr.Cobs) I can’t remember what the stones actually are. I know they’re not fake … but I’d have to find the certificate for the ring to know for sure! eeek!

Like you, I was totally thrilled to bits and pieces that the little Robin finally came down off the fence and had everything on the Menu! My heart was racing when I saw him there, simply because I was so excited about it. (I need to get out more don’t I. LOL)

    1. .. And … how would you write your name!!! Anne without the E on the end would just be Ann … and that’s not you at all!

No. I absolutely refuse to live in a world where the letter E doesn’t exist.

😀 Thanks for coming Anne and for leaving a comment behind.

  3. I just knew the robin would not be able to stay away for very long. Being at the Cobweb feeder has to be a treat.
Interesting info here…..the missing ‘e’ is surprising. Never thought about it. Wonder who sat down and counted all those words.? And I’m not going to tell you how long it took me to figure out what Sat Nav is. LOL Got to go …photo so I can be a good blogger and post something. another LOl.

    1. Hello my fabulous friend! 😀

Aw Bev … I was cock-a-hoop when I looked up and there he was, firstly in the big dish feeder and then he hopped on over to to the metal feeder to see what was on offer in that dish. He stayed there for quite a time too. I wanted to run outside and shout it to whoever would listen. LOL. Just thrilled to bits.

The missing E… I know!!! That must have taken quite some time to write that book. E is just such a valuable member of the Alphabet. How do you decide to give up using it? A true work of dedication.

      So happy to see you.

        1. I think it had to be his purpose Bev. I have no idea how he managed though. It would have been SO distracting to continually try to replace words with other words which didn’t contain any ‘E”s. Just in this reply to you here, I’ve used 21 letter E’s! Ha!

  4. The fog joke really tickled me! I love the facts, especially the book with no ‘e’ in, he must have been a genius. I think snails do have sat nav, just one that points them in the direction of such delicious morsels as my courgette patch. Have a lovely weekend! X

    1. Ohhhh they ate your COURGETTES??? HOW VERY DARE THEY!
I LOOOVE courgettes. They’re so versatile and I got my little girls (well… when they were little, many, many years ago) to eat them so easily and they became a favourite with them too.

I cut them up and added them to the toppings of some home made pizzas (made by using crispy bagettes bought from the bakery department in Tesco), cutting them in half, and then making pizzas – in kind of the regular way – and then grilling them on a slightly more gentle setting until the cheese melted and they were bubbling and cooked though.

I told my girls that the circles of courgettes were Magic Cirles which, when eaten, gave them special powers.
(I will NEVER get to Heaven because of the fiberoonies I told my girls to get them to eat vegetables! Shocking. Absolutely shocking!)

But .. it worked. And those Pizzas were favourites with both daughters – and daughter No.2 now makes them now and again, for Little Cobs! WIN!

The book with no ‘e’s… my first thought was ‘how on earth did he manage???’ …. my second thought was … “why on earth did he go to all that trouble, just to prove he could??” Why? (The answer came back: ‘because he’s a bloke.’ s.i.g.h. LOL

Glad you got a giggle from the Fog joke … it’s my favourite. lol. (I am such a child! tsk).

      Have an incredible weekend Mrs.Craft.

Loved the jokes! No coffee in hand, just water, and left it on the desk while I read the jokes just to be on the safe side! LOL! 🙂

Ohhh you’re another one like me. Water water every where and not a drop to drink.

That’s because it’s all over the darn table, desk, computer, anything I wanted to keep. LOL

I was over-joyed when the Robin came back and this time managed to have a three course meal. Bless.
