Little Robin Redbreast ~ an ATC/ACEO – painted for World Watercolour Month

We’ve recently put up two bird feeders right outside my craft room window, and there is a little Robin who hasn’t yet built up enough courage to take a turn on the feeder.  Now I’m guessing that’s because of the following two reasons:-

  1.  Maisie.  Miniscule cat who has a ‘second name’ of:  Squeaky,  because that’s how she sounds when she meows.  Squeaky cat has, since the bird feeders have been put in place, taken to sitting on a little table we have in the garden – for it gives her the perfect view of the bird feeders.  Aaaand we all know why that is.  But the little Robin has very good eyesight and can clearly see that there is a monster in the garden, so he/she I think, is waiting for Squeaky to be snoozing in the house, before he jumps down off the fence and has a little nibble.
  2. Magpies and PigeonsMagpies … well I’m surprised quite frankly that they visit anymore since Squeaky jumped up from where she was hiding and grabbed Mr.Magpie around the body and held him, mid-air, in a big ol’ cat hug …. that was until I shouted her name and clapped my hands SO loudly that it scurred her and she let him go.

The pigeons I have no idea why they come, they seem unable to plot a course to actually land on the big feeder dish itself, and so go through this elaborate dance on the decorative curved metal top of the one feeder, trying to grip it with their big chunky toes and failing miserably.  I sit in my craft room watching them from the window, bemused at their lack of agility, and their stupidness.  All the flapping of their wings is like cat morse code  and Alf Capone will lift his weary head and watch for a while … however he can’t be bothered to drag his weary you know what out of his bed – not for a pigeon.  (Apparently Pigeon is not good enough for Mr. Capone).  But Squeaky?  Aw …  she’s game.  She’ll attempt to catch anything if it has the audacity to be alive.   But … so far, there has been no pigeon burials.  So far.  So good.

So … anyhoo … (back to the storyline Cobs!!!)  about the Robin…  He visits our garden and stands on the fence and sings for all he’s worth.  He’s the most delightful little chap and doesn’t seem overly frightened of me. I’ve stood with him in the garden and chatted to him as he’s sung to me.  So lovely is he, that I thought about him on Friday as I was wondering what to paint and it struck me that the Little Robin Redbreast was THE very thing that I should paint.  So I did.

It’s erm … not an exact picture of him,  but more the way the memory of him in my heart sees him.

I hope the little Robin does, one day, when Squeaky cat isn’t around, plucks up his courage and comes to the bird table and has a nibble of something wonderful there.  And I also hope that I happen to be looking out of the craft room window when he does come for lunch, as I’d love to see him finally having a bite to eat on my feeder.

This little Robin was painted in ATC / ACEO size of 2.5″x 3.5″.

Thank you so much for coming and sharing a coffee with me.  It’s lovely to see you here and I’m so thankful to you for visiting.  Please feel free to leave a chat behind via a message.  I promise I’ll answer.

May your Sunday be spent in a way which fills you with happiness.  If you can …  share your happiness.  Say good morning to someone you pass along the road as you go for your paper.  Smile at someone and share your warmth.  But if either of those things aren’t really your ‘thing’, then ... perhaps you could pray, or just send good wishes, for someone you happen to pass on the street or even who walks past your house today when you’re looking out of the window.  Pray for a stranger.  Or, if you’re not a believer then simply send out really good wishes for that person, and push those wishes out of your head so that if the Universe is listening at that precise moment then it might just agree with you and grants that person your wish.  Wouldn’t that be brilliant?

Have a truly beautiful day.  Be good to yourself ….  and where-ever you happen to go today, may your God go with you.

Sending love  ~

Hello. I'm 'Cobwebs'. I live in a wee little cottage in the South of England, aptly called Cobweb Cottage. This little dwelling really is a cobweb factory. Not inside (well, occasionally) - but outside - flipping heck! This information should give you a clue as to why my blog is called The Art of Cobwebs aka: The Cobweborium Emporium. I've been arty and crafty from a very young age, and although my crafts have sometimes turned a corner and taken me in another direction, I've always crafted in some way, shape or form. One day, in the blink of an eye, life changed somewhat for me and the consequences were many. I had to find a new way of being 'artistic'. Card making; scrap-booking; producing ATC's and ACEO's; needle felting; Polymer clay; painting- but in a more relaxed style than I had before, and sewing, - are all things which I visit, as and when life allows. I've fairy recently become a Textile Artist and am enjoying this new creative outlet very much as it offers me so much scope for letting my imagination run through a grassy field and feel the wind in my hair - (mentally, of course). I love to create. To make things. I truthfully believe that the best gifts in the world are those in which you've given your time, rather than your cash. Thank you so much for visiting. Please visit my blog (link below) and have a look around. I'm sure you'll find something to enjoy, even if it's only a handful of jokes! (yes, seriously - there really are jokes!) Wishing you a truly blessed rest of your day! ~ Cobs. <3

  3. Lovely little Robin – I’m sure he will find the courage to feed eventually. Woodpigeons are hilarious at our bird feeders. As you say, they flap about trying to figure out how they can land their big bodies on relatively small feeders. Most of them have now figured out that they can sit on the fence and lean over to the feeders. Last week we had one sit on the top of the feeder whilst he patiently waited for my husband to finish filling it with seed. He had a little chat with him and left him to his dinner lol. Anyway, I’ve hijacked your lovely robin post with random things again!

Hope you have a lovely Sunday. Hxx

    1. Hijacked be darned … I LOVE chatting with you Hannah. You can ‘hijack’ any post, any day you like, for a chat. Love it!

I’m in agreement … I think our little Robin will eventually pluck up the courage to land on the feeder and partake of a treat or two.

The Pigeons … ohhhhh I swear they don’t have two brain cells to rub together! They land in the garden sometimes, on the floor, and there, sat 10 feet away is one of the cats! They plod through the garden and I can see the bemusement on the cats faces when they do it. Sadly if there is a cat there I have to scare the bird off so that it doesn’t become a ‘toy’ to a cat. [shudder].

I never realised until we put these two bird feeders out what HUGE CHUNKY FEET pigeons have!
The one bird feeder is a metal one and the top has these beautiful curvy metal rods which are shaped and bent. All very decorative and elegant.

Those pigeons try to grip these rods with their chunky toes and the resulting display is hilariously funny. They look like a drunk being told he has to walk along a straight line. Only worse! LOL
      aw, such daft birds!

Thank you both for coming Hannah, and for the fabulous chat. Love our conversations together.

  4. That is the cutest little Robin ever. A dear friend of mine used to feed Pigeons. They were such dirty birds, scattering seed everywhere, pooping all over the place and then because of the seed issue, began to draw rats! She had been doing this for years and now she has learnt a valuable lesson, you just simply can not feed everything. She loves all creatures, great and small. Anyway, thought I would share. 🙂
Lovely wee work of art Cobs, I do love it.

    1. Hello Soozy
Thank you for your comment and the warning about not being able to feed everything because of the rats problem you friend ended up in. How dreadful!

We actually aren’t specifically feeding the Pigeons – we have two who are just greedy visitors at our bird restaurant which we set up purposely to attract small garden birds.

Thankfully Mr.Cobs is very hot on keeping our garden clean – and we go out of our way to buy non-germinating seed for wild birds so that we don’t even get the problem of seeds which may have dropped off the bird seed dishes, nestling into the ground and growing goodness knows what in our garden!

We’re very clean folk in our gardens – even the chickens big scratch area gets a daily wash and brush up after they’ve gone to bed of a night time to ensure their own health and safety!!

I hope your poor friend managed to get her rat problem sorted out. Sounds like a nightmare situation!

Thanks for your comment Soozy. It’s so kind of you to worry.
Have a truly blessed rest of your day. 🙂

  5. That little robin is adorable! I can hear Squeaky now if I close my eyes. When I was a kid (a long time ago physically…mentally not so long) we had a cat that would lay on the windowsill watching the bird feeder. She made the oddest sound when a bird landed. I think it is the only time I have ever heard a cat stutter.

    1. LOL!
      Young Squeaky here makes the most ridiculous noise when she meows. A.. a.. a… a.. eh. A a …a …. a.

I’ve told her that it’s embarrassing that such a beautiful little cat should sound like a creaky door being opened, but she pays no attention to that and continues to make the sound. lol.

  6. He’s stunning Cobs, and with the exception of the Australian Fairy Wren (male), is my favourite little bird. So cheeky. Lovely job, I hope he sits on your bird table soon. He probably isn’t really hungry at the moment but come winter he will be.

    1. Hello Barbara 😀
I’d never heard of the Australian Fairy Wren, so asked Google to show me a selection of images.
Oh. My. Goodness! I can see why you love them!
This was my favourite photograph that I found – it shows two females and one incredible little male cuddling up to them …

Thank you so much for coming Barbara, and for leading me to discover the Austalian Fairy Wren. The male is a totally stunning little work of art.

Thrilled you like the little Robin.

  7. Love the little robin – and the pic above too actually! – but I don’t like to encourage birds too much in our garden because of the girls…🐯🐯🐯🐯

    1. Hello Samantha
Aww I’m so thrilled to hear that you love the little Robin. He’s a cute little thing.

As for encouraging the birds … well I did wonder if perhaps I was doing the ‘right’ thing by having the bird feeders in our garden … but I took into account the personalities of my two felines, … and we decided that it was OK to add the two bird feeders – especially in the place where they’re sited.

  8. Fabulous Robin, Cobs.
Last week a robin landed beside me on the Lawn in the Grinds. He looked at me for a second and then flew up onto the fence – not a rush about him. Hope your robin ventures for food soon.

Would you believe … that not yet an hour ago, the little Robin plucked up courageand came to the bird table.
      I’m just over-joyed.

Lovely to hear bout your own little run in with your Robin. I’d like to think he’d become a regular stop on your walks. Take your camera with you next time you go out there. 😀

  9. Oh I so love to watch the birds! We get so many in our backyard. Our neighbors have a bird feeder in their back yard. We have woods around us, so the birds fly from one side of our yard to the bird feeder, and back again. They often take a rest on our fence. I have gotten some great pictures of some blue birds and cardinals as well as some red-head woodpeckers. 🙂

    1. Aw how fabulous!
They’re so breath-takingly beautiful when they stop and wait for a moment where you can ‘drink them in’. Fabulous little creatures.
Thanks for coming Nancee, it’s so lovely to see you!

      1. Thanks Cobs! Sorry I am so late in stopping by this week. I’ve been so busy making cards these last couple of weeks I haven’t had much time for anything else! 😟 I have a stack of 9 cheat sheets of the cards and haven’t even had time to create my blog posts. ☹️ I decided to take a break from card making tonight to try to catch up on some things. Back to card making tomorrow! 🤗
