Hello, and a very Happy Friday to you. If you’re still on Thursday wherever you live in this world, then take that greeting as an early one for tomorrow.
I’ve learned a few things this week which were real eye openers. The types of things that make your eyes increase to the size of saucers, and then your brain says ….. “Really? REALLY?? Are you sure?“. So, I went on a seek and find the truth mission and I list here a few of the things which I found out this week – which might make your eyes widen to the size of saucers too.
Britons eat 97% of the world’s baked beans. I was really surprised about this. I thought that it would be the USA who would have eaten the most baked beans … Cowboys and all that. But no. Us British are the Baked Bean Babies. We must have some Cowboys here and I don’t know about them! Yeeee Hawww!
There are more stars in the universe than words which have been spoken by all of the humans who have ever lived. I don’t know about you, but there’s something so romantic about that fabulous information. Something which made me stand at the window and look up to the night sky and quietly whisper a long, slow . . . w.o.w!
I also learned:
The Romans used powdered mouse brains as toothpaste. I’m not going anywhere with that one. I’m just putting it out there and saying nurthing. (I’m not judgemental).
And this gave me a moment of eye-popping when I heard about it . . .
France was still executing people by guillotine when the first Star Wars film came out. Yes, I didn’t believe it either. So I went on a seek and find mission to find out the facts just to make sure . . .
Yes … it’s true. France really was still using the guillotine for executions when the first Stars Wars Film came out.
The first Star Wars film was released on May 25th, 1977.
The last person to be executed in France was put to death in September 1977. The death penalty was abolished in French law in 1981. It is now also forbidden by the French constitution, and by several human rights treaties to which France is a party.
I’ve been chatting with Chicken Grandma this week about slugs (and their ability to nosh down on all my Hostas! grrr)…. and I learned this about the gardeners monster: Slugs …. have 4 noses. This is obviously how they found all my Hostas and ate them all. So… I motion that when we get a cold, we should all begin to sneeze over slugs so that they catch a cold and can’t sniff out their favourite treats in our gardens!
Well, I think we’ve reached that moment when we all sit back and enjoy ….

Some things I just wish I didn’t know, like slugs have 4 noses. By the way you reminded me that I too planted hostas and they were devoured very quickly. Well I guess if someone sits something delightful to eat right in front of you, it would be rude not to tuck in. Thanks for all the info and the funnies.

Happy Friday to you…even though it is still Thursday in Texas! I had no idea about the four noses that those horrible slugs have! The Chicken Grandma is smart…that is all there is to it! And the mouse toothpaste!! How horrible…I am judging the mouse brains! Have a very fun week and don’t put out any mousetraps!! Lots of good wishes from Kindergarten!

Chicken Grandma is smart, you’re right She shared with me a ‘for slugs and the shooing off of recipe’ – a combination of oils, which makes slugs do a U-turn from your plants.
It was this which made me wonder what it was about this recipe that slugs disliked, so I went in search of sluggy facts…. and that’s how I found out about slugs and their noses!
They aren’t noses like our noses … but more of a tentacle which they can actually smell things with! Ha! Who’d a thought!

Did not sleep at all last night …guess I was afraid of missing the time. Need to be there at 5:00am she and her mother had a 12 hr.ride down there and back so I am walking tired at this moment. Grands were good..always are.

They do have a tendancy to do that Bev. I’ve noticed it with Little Cobs. It seems like only a few weeks ago that I was changing his nappy and while doing it, I taught him to say ‘mumma’. I remember his chubby little face. Aw, he was so adorable.
He is now (adorable) … but as a baby he was just the most cutest thing.
[sigh] time passes so fast, and the more we try to hang on to it the faster it seems to go.
It’s a race it would seem, but no one told me I was to race and neither did they tell me that time seems to be cheating …. I just haven’t figured out, yet, how it’s doing it.

Oh, Cobs, I hope your “What I have learned this week” has a lovely summer holiday. I can’t imagine brushing my teeth with powdered mouse brains – now I have to go read the label on my toothpaste! Slugs – I am mean, I used to go out with a flashlight and dump salt on them in the garden. I have also heard you can leave a dish of beer, and they will drown in it. (never tried that!) Have a wonderful weekend!

LOL… SLUGS … and the trip out with a flashlight. Mr. Cobs used to do that very same thing! He would go out, find ’em, and take them to the Slug Beer Bar. (An empty yoghurt pot, half filled with flat beer) Where they would sip their full, and get extremely, passing out drunk, and finally, pass over to slug heaven when they fell in and drowned.
Yes … Things I’ve Learned is going on it’s summer holiday. I was hoping that it would invite me as touring round the UK in a VW Campa Van is something I’d love to do. Sadly, it didn’t. No invite for me. [sigh]. lol.

I think you’re going about your slug situation all wrong. Apparently you need to pretend that you would enjoy being best friends with them and invite them to your garden for coffee. When they accept your invitation, (which of course they will, slugs are not stupid and would jump at the chance to have a cup of coffee and delightful conversation with you) wait until they are all settled in near the hostas and OOPS “accidentally” spill the used coffee grounds in front of the plants, Now it is well know that in slug culture the spilling of coffee grounds is the gravest of insults going back to the earliest records of slug society etiquette. Slugs being very pretentious will have no choice but to immediately remove themselves from your company. I believe slug tradition dictates that they put all four noses in the air, huff indignantly, smash their now cold coffee cup on the ground and depart vowing never to return. Now slugs are also quite steadfast about holding grudges and take their oaths to never speak with you or return to your garden again very seriously.
It should be noted that there are several different slug social circles so you may need to host a few soirees repeating the same offensive to slugs ritual before you become an absolute pariah to the slug community.
Remember dear dear Cobs – Keep your friends close, but keep your slugs closer – then throw coffee grounds at them!!”

My brain is quite sluggish this morning, but I was not surprised at the high consumption of beans in the UK. I couldn’t tell you how many times I read a suggestion for eating beans on toast. They were in novels and TV comedies, the last one being “As Time Goes By”. If something is made fun of, there must be some grain of truth in the statement.
I will miss our Friday learning sessions, but I’m happy that you are taking a break. Happy summer!

Slug and snails and puppy dogs tails, that’s was little boys are made of… We have our share of those evil garden and flower eating slimy things. I have a recipe for taking care of those pesky things but it requires you open a good beer. Poor about 1/2″ in a small tuna can or cat food tin. Put it out where they are frolicking about and they crawl in there and well, end of story.
Traveling in a VW is what I long for, I had a 74 Westphalia and loved it, we do stupid things when we are young, but I traded it for a smaller car!!! DUMB. They are worth so much $ nowadays that it’s really a sin to sell them. I would give my eye teeth to have one again.
No holiday for me, at least not the kind where you leave home for days. A holiday for me would be a picnic somewhere by water, or playing with colour with a friend in her craft room. I do love to do stuff like that. I just enjoy going to a place that I haven’t been or that I like, and just hanging out there for the day.
This weekend is a huge garage sale in a community called Oak Bay, lots of lovely old character homes and well off people, they have wonderful “stuff”. The whole area, or lots of the people there, put stuff out tomorrow and suckers like myself go about buying things they don’t really need. This year, I am only looking for a bedside lamp. Mine has seen better days. It is a nice outing when it doesn’t rain. The forecast is not very good either but we will chance it 🙂 Hope your weekend is fair for the weather and relaxing.

Hello Cobs, Such a funny and gruesome round up of facts to brighten my Friday evening. Ha ha – I can totally believe that us brits eat so many baked beans. I think my son’s consumption of them makes up quite a large percentage of that 😉
Mouse brain toothpaste – mmmm delicious. Those Romans really had it sorted. My son refuses to use ‘normal’ minty toothpaste so maybe I should try him on the Roman version 😀
Slugs make my skin crawl. Yuk.

OOOH Cobs, I hope you enjoy your summer brreak. You timed it perfectly in that school ends, middle of next week so I have enough material for a few car rides, thanks! However you, your observations and your fabulouse sense of humour will be missed.
I thought about making a political statement about our lack of cowboys but frankly the political news comes so rapidly it may not be revelant by the time I press “post”.
It would be fun if the “Things I’ve learened” Campavan rolled its way through our town, maybe you could talk to its tour manager. VW camper van would fit in well here in California.
Anyway, enjoy your summer break in your garden working on your “making worms sick” theory. If you happen to figure something out for snails let me know, they are eating my angel trumpet tree!

Ahhh, working on a Friday should be banned. It’s bad for your health.
What there should be is:
Monday – should become Sunday, part 2. This is to do away with that miserable feeling which creeps into a workers life sometime during Sunday, and spoils the day, and also cuts short the weekend into, at best, one and a half days. So No Work Monday should be the law.
Tuesday, would then become the first working day of the week.
Wednesday – would then make perfect sense at being the Middle Day of the week, and a far more cheerful day.
Thursday .. .. .. would make total sense if it was the last day of the working week.
Friday – Day to wind down so that everyonecould have a wonderful Saturday and Sunday followed by the Day Of Rest Monday!
TA DAHHHHH! The result would be a land of far happier people. A disfunctional country – but the people would be happy. LOL.
The baked beans .. I still can’t see how that would be, y’know. I was stunned when I heard that little nugget.

Oh goodness…I almost got confused. After reading all of the comments I wasn’t sure at all
if you were coming or going. Haha hehe. It doesn’t take much these days to rattle my brain but I think I’ve gotten it all straightened out now. You know the game where you whisper in someones ear and after it goes around the circle the secret doesn’t come out like it started. See…we don’t pay close attention even as so called adults. LOL

Oh I am going to miss these posts….but I totally understand about taking time off for the summer. I am so busy in the summer months. We have a pool, so we usually have family over on the weekend to spend time in and around the pool and cook out. We enjoy it so much….but it does cut into my crafting time! LOL! Enjoy your summer holiday! I can’t wait until it returns! Enjoy! 🙂

Happy Sunday, Cobs! That beans fact surprised me (although I’d have gone for Mexicans, although they may have different beans, and I may have used one although too many there!) and the toothpaste one didn’t go down very well with me. I have sensitive teeth.
I shall miss these weekly lessons from you, Cobs, but will look forward to their return with palpable anticipation. In the meantime, enjoy your holiday! 😀

I’m not having a holiday Tom. Living (roughly) 7 minutes from the sea, I’m kind of ‘on holiday’ all the time here.

always a delight to visit with you; I think if we did start out at 80-we may still act silly when we get to 18. Some people use saucers of beer for slugs-I don’t know ? And goodness what a lot of baked beans are eaten! xx

I know Rabbit!!! It really surprised me when I found out that it was Britain who ate the most beans. But … perhaps that’s why all those scented candles are so popular now. LOL

Those slugs are sneaky hidey blooming things aren’t they, so small but big appetite! The star thing definitely is a WOW, can’t imagine the scale can you? Aww it’s so sad weekly is going westie for a while but so pleased you’re sticking around, that would bring tears to my eyes if you distappeared! You’re right about slugs ..small but BIG appetite!, and right about the stars in the sky too. It kind of blew me away when I looked at the sky with this new knowledge. I mean to say . . . there are and have been gazillions of us on this planet, and each one of us has spoken millions of words from the moment we could talk to the moment we leave the earthly realm. And to think that there are more stars in the sky than there are words SPOKEN BY US ALL … well my mind seemed to both explode with this information, but at the same time I just couldn’t make my brain understand how this could possily be true. w.o.w.!

Oo. Ash! Never thought of that.
I’ve tried egg shells … crushed up… which worked for a while, bu then they disappear into the soil and we’re back at the start again.
I’ve decided that I’m putting my Hostas (when I go and buy them) into pots this time, rather than the soil, and I’m going to run some copper tape around the pots so that the little blighters can’t get to the Hostas and eat them.
They don’t like copper tape because gives them a tiny electric shock … not enough to kill them, but enough to give them a kind of low buzzy tingle – which they don’t like. Soooo.. copper tape is on the shopping list!

There was much I enjoyed in this weekly wrap-up, but the item that got me giggling and will probably surprise a giggle out of me all day, was the jokes about unique and tame cats. I can hardly wait to tell it to anyone I associate with in the next week.

Yes … I loved the Unique cats too. It’s one which I think most people have to say out loud to get … unless you have a giggly brain cell like I have … then you can hear it inside your mind and BOOM … the joke takes hold of you and gets your chuckle muscle working. lol.
