Things I’ve learned this week.

Happy 19th of May and … HAPPY FRIDAY!  Aw it’s great to see you.  I’m kind of getting rather fond of these Friday Get Togethers.  It’s a bit like Bingo Night, don’t y’think?  lol.

I’ve been through a week of learning some odd and strange things this week.  I’ve come across things, seen things, experienced things and found out some weird things.  All of which I’ve had to use the good ol’ interwebby to discover more.

For instance ….  I learnt a new way of saying:  Avocados.  Yes, there really is.  😀

Imagine, if you will, being the 7-year-old child you used to be, then add a sprinkle of ‘cheeky monkey’,  and a pinch of ‘smiley rascal’,  and just for good measure add a large soup ladle of ‘twinkly smiles’.  Stir the mixture and then continue to read as I educationamalise you.

Say this sentence three times:  Have a CAD dooze.  Say it again… and again.  Have a CAD dooze.

Now you’re going to say it in that way in which we all talk… we miss some letters out of the pronunciation:  So you’re going to miss that letter H and the letter D on CAD.   It now becomes Av a CAdooze.   Make sure that you make that ‘CA’  into a hard sounding KA,  (not soft sounding, like you’d hear in the word: car.  Hard sounding like in the word CAt).   Av a  CAdooze.  Practise it … Av a  CAdooze.  Av a  CAdooze.   Say it out loud:  Av a  CAdooze.

You can now switch your brain back on and listen to the way you are now saying Av a   CAdooze.   Av a  CAdooze.  Av a  CAdooze.  It’s three separate words.  Av | a | Cadooze.

So now I’m going to ask you   . . .  do you  Av a  cadooze?

This week I’ve also learnt about an incredible, unique flower whose petals turn clear as glass when it’s splattered by raindrops.

No, I’m not making it up and its not April the 1st.  The little flowers of this wonderful plant turn from white, to clear when raindrops hit it’s petals.  Take a look ….

Diphylleia Grayi

And this (below) is what it looks like normally, before the rain . . .

Diphylleia Grayi white

It’s called Diphylleia Grayi …  or commonly known as the Skeleton Flower.  It comes from the mountainsides in the colder regions of China and Japan. The flowers come out in late spring, with large, fuzzy green, umbrella-like foliage topped with small clusters of pretty white petals.

Isn’t that just jaw dropping amazing?  I’d never heard of these flowers before.  Have you?

Next!  …  I learned this week that every night, the U.S. Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the Declaration of Independence are lowered into a bomb-proof safe.  Again … something else I never knew.  It’s the little things like this which make me open my eyes wide and ask myself why I never knew *that*  (whatever *that* might be).

We’ve all, no doubt, been struck by an ice cream headache at least once in our lives. Well …. I found out this week that there is a proper name for it!  The technical name for an ice-cream headache is sphenopalatine ganglioneuralgia.  Heckaroonie … I can’t even say it!  LOL.  But I know exactly what it feels like. tsk tsk.

Oh … and I learned this, this week, and it tickled the heck out of me . . .

Marco Polo described them as:-  “scarcely smaller than elephants.  They have the hair of a buffalo and feet like an elephant’s. They have a single large black horn in the middle of the forehead…  They have a head like a wild boar’s…  They spend their time by preference wallowing in mud and slime.  They are very ugly brutes to look at.  They are not at all such as we describe them when we relate that they let themselves be captured by virgins, but clean contrary to our notions.”  What do you think he might have thought he’d found and was describing for us there?

He thought he’d found  . . .   [drumroll] ….  Unicorns.   But it’s believed that what he was actually describing was the one horn rhinoceros.   Bless his deluded little heart.  lol

And finally ….  I learned a few things about chickens …  but the one thing I learned tickled me so I thought it might interest you too:

Apparently, according to those in the know,

  • Danish chickens go gok-gok
  • German chickens gak gak
  • Thai chickens go gook gook;
  • Dutch chickens tok tok
  • Finnish and Hungarian chickens say kot kot.
  • The French hen goes cotcotcodet

Where-as my chickens go:  SHREEeaky BLEEEAKKK FOUR FOUR FOUR cluck cluck! VERY shouty, especially when just about to lay an eggBut the littlest one says:  Paw, paw paw beek beek bok.  Paw paw paw beek beek bok.  She’s a pathetic sounding little thing, but so sweet and so very tiny.  (A Bantam – who has feathered feet.  It makes her look like she’s wearing slippers.  Bless!  lol).

And now ladies and gentlemen, we arrive at the part we’ve all been waiting for ….

THE JOKES

Two sailors are at sea. One says:  “That sure is a lot of water out there!”.   The other replies: “Yeah! And that’s just the top of it!”

Q:  What does a pirate say on his 80th birthday?  …  A:  Aye Matey.

A puzzle for you:

  • Michael J Fox has a short one.
  • Arnold Schwarzenegger has a long one.
  • Madonna doesn’t have one.
  • The Pope doesn’t use his.

What is it?   click, hold the click and drag here for the answer:—> … a last name. 😀

What do you get when you cross an elephant with a hyena?  A stern rebuke from the ethics committee and an immediate cessation of grant funding.

Q: Why don’t anteaters ever get sick?  ….  A: Cause they’re full of anty bodies.

Q:  What do you get when you cross a cow and a duck?  A:  Milk and quackers

and finally …

Knock knock. Who’s there?   Salad.   Salad who?   Oh, just lettuce in!

And that’s me done and dusted!

Another week over, and I’m wiser and more educated than I was last week.  So now it’s over to you.  Have you learned anything this week?  If so …  tell me what.  I’d love to hear about something you’ve learned this week.

Thank you so much for coming and sharing a coffee with me.  I love seeing you and spending some time together having a laugh.

May your weekend be thoroughly enjoyable.  And may next week bring you smiles and joy from the moment it begins!  Be good to each other,  and …  may your God go with you.

Author: The Art of Cobwebs - aka:- thecobweboriumemporium

Hello. I'm 'Cobwebs'. I live in a wee little cottage in the South of England, aptly called Cobweb Cottage. This little dwelling really is a cobweb factory. Not inside (well, occasionally) - but outside - flipping heck! This information should give you a clue as to why my blog is called The Art of Cobwebs aka: The Cobweborium Emporium. I've been arty and crafty from a very young age, and although my crafts have sometimes turned a corner and taken me in another direction, I've always crafted in some way, shape or form. One day, in the blink of an eye, life changed somewhat for me and the consequences were many. I had to find a new way of being 'artistic'. Card making; scrap-booking; producing ATC's and ACEO's; needle felting; Polymer clay; painting- but in a more relaxed style than I had before, and sewing, - are all things which I visit, as and when life allows. I've fairy recently become a Textile Artist and am enjoying this new creative outlet very much as it offers me so much scope for letting my imagination run through a grassy field and feel the wind in my hair - (mentally, of course). I love to create. To make things. I truthfully believe that the best gifts in the world are those in which you've given your time, rather than your cash. Thank you so much for visiting. Please visit my blog (link below) and have a look around. I'm sure you'll find something to enjoy, even if it's only a handful of jokes! (yes, seriously - there really are jokes!) Wishing you a truly blessed rest of your day! ~ Cobs. <3

  1. I think I may stop reading these at night and more in the morning with my coffee, but I was on the computer and thought, hey, why not talk to Cobs 🙂
I will be spending a few hours with a new and becoming dear friend of mine, Kim, she loves paper stuff and was a designer for a few companies, so has acquired quite a lot of fun stock. So we are going to play with colour and make some happy art. She has a lot of medical issues and we almost lost her a couple weeks ago. It was very scary. But she is feeling much better and is reeeeally wanting company, other than her dynamic husband who loves and adores her and visa versa. Should be fun.
Loved your explanation of saying av o ca dooze! lol
I used to have a couple chickens, a bantam named Ethel and a red hen named what else? Henrietta. 🙂 Loved them both dearly. I have four ducks too, I loved them also.
There has been so many sad things in my life the past couple weeks, so seeing Kim will be a most positive experience. I will be glad of her company tomorrow.
Brain freeze, yes, I have experienced those on several occasions, and I’m sure will be experiencing it yet again 🙂
This is a long weekend here. On Monday it’s called Victoria Day and I’m sure I will find something interesting to do. We have had the Kite Festival over the last couple years but it got canceled this year but will be back next. Bummer, but I’m sure there will be something else downtown. I look forward to seeing what is out there, plus the bonus, we are supposed to have a nice weekend regarding the weather. About time is all I can say.
I thank you for your wit, your stories and for making me smile 🙂
Thanks Cobs, have a lovely Friday and weekend.

    1. Hello Soozy
Aw, I’m so saddened to hear about your lovely friend, Kim. She must have been in a dreadful state for everyone to have almost lost her a couple of weeks ago. It sounds like she has a multiple conditions situation which she’s fighting, and I would imagine that if everything all blew up at the same time, then it must have caused this life threatening situation which happened.
I’m so happy to hear that she’s back on an even keel again and that she will be able to craft with you very soon.

I was distressed to read that you’ve had many sad things happen in your life over the past couple weeks, and pray that your situation improves very soon.

Even though the Kite Festival isn’t ‘on’ this year, I bet there will be something there to replace it (surely??). Could you phone somewhere … like a visitors centre or a tourists information, or even the council (or your equivalent where you live) and ask them either if they know what might be something you could visit, or if they could point you in the right direction so that you can find out. Hopefully someone will be able to answer your question.

AND … the weather being ok this weekend, would make the whole thing perfect!

Thank you so much for coming Soozy. Love to see you and catch up with what’s going on in your life.

    1. Happy Friday Kindergarten!
      ooo… Monk Fruit.
Well I’m a bit of a fruit pig, so I should have come across this before now … but it’s not ringing any bells, so I will indeed take a peep and see what I can learn. I’m crossing my fingers that I get an A+* …. lol.

      1. I will tell you that it is VERY interesting! We went to a nutrition class yesterday and someone asked a question about them. Everyone else in the room said…whaaaaat???!!! I do hope you are successful on this exam!

        1. I’ve had a look at the Monk Fruit on the interweb. They look a little like a pale watermelon (smaller though). I love the sound of the NIL calories!

I found out that it’s actually called LO HAN KUO. 😀 It can be used as an alternative to sugar in cakes, chocolate and all sorts of things, and… it has a low gyclemic index – which is great because there’s no sugar crash later.

It should be great for diabetics, and it should help with tooth decay too, so I’m wondering why more people don’t know about this apparently wonder fruit of magic properties.

I haven’t seen it on sale … but then, I haven’t been looking for it. However, I’ll do a little more research for personal reasons, and if it’s ok, I’ll certainly try and source it, for it would seem, from what I’ve read so far, to be a far healthier alternative to sugar.

I hope I get a great result for this exam. LOL x

          1. Oh my! You are a quick study and an ideal student! A+ and 10 extra points on your final. If you continue this behavior, I will send you to work with the art teacher for 30 minutes!! No kidding…doesn’t it sound like magic? Yes…a wonder fruit! I also read that it can work like an anti-inflammatory! An entire litany of health issues might can be addressed! The teacher at the nutrition class says it can be bought at Whole Foods Market. Do you have those? The fruit is actually like a gourd! And…it comes in packets too! So…let me know what else you discover! The other name sounds like words my Vietnamese students would say! However, the fruit comes from China and Thailand! We are learning so much!

  2. Eyes down! Fab post as always. Those flowers are pretty. My chickens make more of a clock clock noise. Very strange birds they are. That’s a pretty neat trick with the click and drag for the answer!! Great jokes. Have a lovely weekend dear Cobs.

      Absolutely fabulous to see you.

  3. Good morning!
I hope it’s drier there than it is here…those flowers are fantastic! They look so pretty and delicate, fascinating! And also…did you know in France dogs say “Ouah ouah”! Quite funny…my mother’s dogs just go “Rahh rahhh rahhh” no wonder she has a permanent headache..lol!
I actually had to text the salad joke to my son..it made me laugh so much!
Have a wonderful day, lots of love to you xx

    1. Hello Samantha.
Drier??? Well it was first thing, and then …. and THEN … THE HEAVENS OPENED AND DUMPED RAIN IN TORRENTS, then it stopped for 8 minutes … THEN … HAIL STONES which frightened the dog and made her jump off her bed (where she’d been snoozing and snoring) and run to me, barking at the noise.

And FINALLY ….. T.H.U.N.D.E.R … which scared the living daylights out of me because there was no warning, no far away rumbles which built up until they got to us… no. JUST ONE BALLY LOUD THUNDER CLAP WHICH SCARED ME, THE CATS, THE DOGS, AND … did I mention me?

I didn’t know that about French dogs. LOL. My darling woofy creature says two things …. ROW row (like rowing a boat) and … if I don’t act instantly and beat whatever it is that she’s barking about, to a pulp, she changes the word to WHOO WHOO WHOO??? in a rather cross voice.

She can, on some barks, go right through me soundwise. It can actually hurt my ears.

Thrilled to pieces to hear you’ve shared the salad joke. I hope he enjoyed it. lol.

Wishing you a drier afternoon than you had earlier today. And… a dry weekend and one filled with smiles.

      1. Good Sunday morning to you!
It actually looks like I can put off the ark building for a bit as we have sunshine today…my poor peonies look like drowned ballerinas 😦 but maybe they will dry out a bit today…
It sounds like you had an extreme weather moment – I’m not fond of lightning, I once saw a strike when I was looking out of the window…and when I was a little girl my mother told me that thunder was God moving furniture around LOL!
Hope you have a dry and pleasant day, lots of love to you 🙂 xxx

        1. My mum told me the same thing about thunder. LOL… and in turn … I told my little ones when they were really young, the exact same thing. I could see that they weren’t ready for the explaination of how thunder actually happened, and would be able to visualise heavenly furniture being moved from here, to there, because they’d seen us doing that very thing, and heard the sounds of a chair being moved or a bed being dragged on a wooden floor.
sigh … the things we tell our children in order for them to not be scared of thunder and lightning! xxx

  4. Oh I do love the glass flowers. Wonder if the glass winged butterfly visits them? Amazing Nature
Now…about the brain freeze. I have read, which I do sometimes, that if you stick your tongue to the roof of your mouth the pain will ease. We will give it a try next time.
And the chickens. Never thought that they might have a different language according to where they live. Kinda like people. Again — amazing the nature .
Today is my grandsons 7th birthday. Just can’t get ready for him growing up so fast. Second grade coming up and two…two sisters in kindergarten. Time moves on!

    Quote of the day:
” I was never one to patiently pick up broken fragments and glue them together again and tell myself that the mended whole was as good as new. What is broken is broken…and I ‘d rather remember it as it was at it’s best than mend it and see the broken pieces as long as I live.” Margaret Mitchell

    1. Like you, I never thought about chickens having their own language either, so when I read that it made me sit up and think! I wondered if perhaps dogs in different countries also had a different sound to their barks, or cats their meows.

The tongue thing … I’ll give it a try and see what it does. Who knows, eh?

I know exactly what you mean about your grandson growing so fast. Little Cobs seems to get taller every week. We have him all day each Saturday, and from one week to the next, I swear to dog that he grows half an inch.
I don’t want him to grow up Beverly. I worry about bullies and being picked on. He has Cerebral Palsy and it affects his speech and his walking, so it’s obvious that he has a disability – but it’s not SO bad that he’s in a wheelchair all the time. He can’t walk long walks because his little legs go into spasms and it causes him such pain.
I want to keep him small and protect him from anything which could harm him.
I’m sure The Lord must be wondering how many times I can actually pray for him (Little Cobs) to be protected and held safe from harm.

I love your quote of the day. It reminds me of a tiny Royal Doulton figure of Christopher Robin, which I had about25 years ago, which my girls broke when they were playing with foam football in the living room. I was in the bath having a bit of rest and recouperation time, and I heard the break happen, and instantly knew which ornament had gone.

I did glue the piece back together again, and even bought a new figure to replace it. But … it wasn’t the same. The original piece was the piece which I loved.
So although Margaret Mitchell may have meant it to mean something in a different direction, it works for me in another.

      Love seeing you Beverly.
Have a blessed rest of your day, my beautiful blogging friend. ~ C. xxx

    1. Hello Ms. Rabbit.
I’m so glad you’ve popped in …. I was going to have to find the conversation we were having about me making you a signature. I really wasn’t looking forward to having to search for that LOL.

I’ve almost finished making your signature …. and I’ve done a couple of different ones so that you have a choice.

I’ll have your email recorded as part of the WordPress system when someone makes a comment – so if it’s OK with you, I’ll send you the signatures to that address you have logged?

If you’d rather have me post to a different email address, you can tell me what it is without me printing it on a comment here, because I have to approve all comments before they go public, so I’ll be able to remove your email if you give me a different address. (so no worries there)

Hoping to be able to finish it off sometime over the weekend and send it to you …. along with instructions on how to save the signature to your computer and then add it to your wordpress account. (Just in case you don’t know how to do that).

Let me know about the email address.

  7. Oh, I am late reading this today…I have been reading them on Thursday PM as they appear for me then. I so enjoy reading all your little tidbits! Those flowers are gorgeous! Too bad they aren’t around here, as I would most certainly have some! Ha! Such interesting information you always find! Oh I get those ice cream headaches if I eat it too fast…I’ve learned to slow down and enjoy it. And your jokes! Well, it’s always nice to end with a smile! And, yes, I’ve learned something from your comments! I’ve always wondered how to add my “signature” to my posts instead of just typing my name. I knew it could be done as I’ve seen it…so, I’m going to investigate it further! Thanks for that tip! Have a good weekend! Ours is going to be rainy,..again! We have had sooo much rain this month! Our weather has been crazy! Yesterday it was 89 F and today, it was 45 F! Yuck! Get warm and stay warm please! 🙂

    1. Hello Nancee. Great to see you!
The flowers …. I know! They’re little miracles, aren’t they?!!!
When I first saw them I was convinced that it was a joke. But on more investigation, I found it to be true! Still couldn’t believe it. lol

Aw, I’m thrilled I’ve inspired you to have a go at making your own signature and putting it into your blog posts.

It’s the making and designing which takes the time. If you want it decorative or fancy things, like swirls and swishes or little pictures or people (like in my signature – or that type of thing), then that all adds to the time it takes.

So put yourself a quiet time to make it where you won’t keep having to get up and do something for someone or cook the dinner etc.

So long as you don’t ‘borrow’ any images from elsewhere on the interwebby net, then you’ll be totally groovy and turn out something unique, and made just for you!

Sending great big creating vibes to get you in the mood for making it. 🙂

  8. Dear Cobs,
(Yaaawn) Oh pardon me – I didn’t mean to be so rude yawning like that. You see, I waited all day to read your fabulous Friday post so that I could have time to truly enjoy it and to craft a witty comment. But the day just got away from me.
So now I find myself trying to keep my eyes open – it’s almost midnight here. My youngest daughter is out for her Senior Prom tonight and I can’t sleep a wink until everyone is home and tucked safe and sound in bed. Especially her because she is my baby. She looked lovely and this was her first very formal dance. We had a lovely time this afternoon getting her ready. She even let me style her hair. I used a hot curling iron and gave her some very glamorous ringlets. I did get a bit chokey here and there seeing her now as a young woman and not the baby that seemed to be her not so long ago. I’m getting a bit teary now just thinking of it.
I probably should have waited a bit longer to chat with you so that I could come up with something relevant and clever to say.
It’s a good thing that you, Dear Cobs have enough wit, and whimsy to pick up my slack this week.
I suppose I should doze on the couch until she’s safely home. My very barky dogs will wake me the minute she touches the doorknob. I’m not sure what language they bark in. It’s definitely one of the louder languages.
Oh just so you are aware – I do speak a little chicken, not fluently, and I can’t be certain, but I suspect your chickens are quite the little gossips and especially like to tsk tsk about how they would like some fancy footwear like the Little Bantam wears. They are under the impression that you have a closet full of feathery chicken slippers and will not let them try any on. They stop just short of accusing you of playing favorites.
Well, my eyelids are becoming heavier by the second, so I will take my leave here.
Thank you for a wonderful chat. And the very brightest of blessings to you. Have a glorious weekend and we’ll see you again soon!
