Four tiny works of [he]art, called ATC’s / ACEO’s

Morning all, and a very Happy Monday!  Something a little different from the norm today.

Some folks might already know exactly what an ATC or an ACEO isbut some may notso I’ll give a short explaination to make sure that we’re all reading from the same hymn sheet and no one is at a disadvantage!

ATCs and ACEOs are  2 1/2  x  3 1/2  inch  works of art.  The only real difference between the two is the commercial (for sale) intent of the art piece by the artist.

  • ACEO = Art Cards, Editions, and Originals are virtually the same as ATCs, EXCEPT  they were created with the intent to be sold.
  • ATC = Artist Trading Cards were created with the intent to trade them only. (i.e. given as a swap with someone else, and no money changing hands).

While art is subjective, the quality of craftsmanship and materials used are important, so there are guidelines:

Examples of ‘Sub-par’ works are:

  • Collage elements falling off / poorly glued / glue showing
  • Cards of the wrong size  (It’s a very strict size of 2.5″ x 3.5″)
  • Computer print outs which haven’t been made by the ATC maker, and poorly drawn over.
  • Cards created with little to no thought (i.e. a sticker or rubber stamped image on a plain piece of cardboard with little to no extra effort)
  • Scribbles on a plain piece of paper

Basically you should make what you would dearly love and want to receive.

Ok .. schools out.

I like to paint my ATC’s & ACEO’s – but have been known to make the odd fun art card which may have beads, images, book pages, musical manuscripts and all manner of other things attached to them.  It’s just as the fancy takes me.  However, these ATC’s / ACEO’s which I share today have all been painted, on water-colour card, pre-cut to the correct size.

This first one was inspired by the Lavender plants in my garden.

Lavender pot
The colour of the mount is actually more like the green in the photo at the head of this post.  The flash has changed the colour here and made it look more like a sage green.

The mount in the photo (the surrounding green board) is from a selection of different coloured mounts I asked a framer to make for me, in the right size, with the ‘hole’ cut to the correct size to take the ATC/ACEO.  The mounts are not a requirement for an Art Card – but personally, I really love having the mounts if I want to frame a card.  The Art Cards themselves are so small, they could easily get lost inside a frame, so I love to use the mounts to draw the eye inwards to the art.

This next Art Card is again inspired by my garden (and again, the green mount has been washed out by the flash):

British Bluebells
Bluebells.  ATC/ACEO – 2.5″ x 3.5″ in size.

I have Bluebells in little groups of flowery hats for fairies,  all over the garden.  When in bloom they look like a fairy milliner has set out a selection of different sized Bluebell Hats, ready for any passing fairy to try on for size.

Of course .. there are some Bluebells which are of the larger size … and I should imagine that the Fairy Dress Designer is kept busy making beautiful skirts and frocks for those fairies who wish to be dressed by the best!

This next Art Card is something from the Fairy Gardens up and down the lands ….  It’s official name is Taraxacum –  or – to you and me: –  a Dandelion Clock.  But you and I know them as they really are:  Fairies, or Fairy Wishes … which are meant to be picked and blown whilst making a wish!

Dandelion Wishes
Make a Wish!  An Art Card ATC/ACEO of 2.5″ x 3.5″ in size.

Although it first appears to be painted simply in black and white, it has three different greens, two different whites,  a very soft grey colour and black.  It also has some cheeky dots of glitter dust.  Well …  it’s a Fairy Wish …. it would have been rude not to include glitter dust!

Information about Dandelion plants from that font of knowledge Wiki:

Taraxacum is a large genus of flowering plants in the family Asteraceae, which consists of species commonly known as dandelion.  They are native to Eurasia and North America, but the two commonplace species worldwide,  T. officinale and T. erythrospermum,  were imports from Europe that now propagate as wildflowers.  Both species are edible in their entirety.

I’m teaching my Grandson, Little Cobs, this poem (which I loaned my Art Card to, as a background)  and trying to get him to remember to say it before he blows a Dandelion Clock and makes a wish ….

And finally, in this set of four ATC’s (Artist Trading Cards – aka ACEO’s) is a little bunch of Delphiniums, tied up with a bow of green …

Delphiniums
ATC/ACEO – A Bunch of Delphiniums,  painted in the size of 2.5″x 3.5″

The spring green coloured bow is something which is allowed in an ATC/ACEO.  It’s all part of the art.

If you’re interested in finding out more about ACEO’s/ATC’s,  and perhaps making some yourself then there are lots of forums which are dedicated to this art form.  One here:  ATCs For All .com  and I’ve also found another site which gives information which you might find helpful here: artpromotivate.com  …  but Google will be your bestest friend if you’d like to see more.

There are also a bucket-load of video’s on You Tube which you can watch – ranging from a couple of minutes to …. oh, well, how long is a piece of string?!!!

Some people take their Art Cards extremely seriously and will spend hours on them.  Some make them for fun and to pass a bit of time doing something which has no stress.  Other’s make them for no reason, and some folks make them, and swap them with other makers.  Some people make and sell them … and some of these artists have quite a following and can command quite high prices for such a tiny piece of artwork.  And then there’s me …. who makes them and will either keep them, send them to someone as a surprise, or I’ll use them on a handmade card … or even use them in scrap-booking.

A Bunch of Flowers

Have a go!  You don’t need to paint, you can glue, stick, draw, … anything  Just do have a go  … and if you do … please blog your lovely artwork and let everyone see it.  You might just be the person who inspires others to take up this fabulous little pastime,  and you might also find out that you really like playing in this tiny frame!

Before I toddle off ….

May I take a moment to say HELLO  to some new followers who no doubt will become friends with us all eventually.  I won’t name names, but please feel welcome to comment on blog posts and introduce yourself.  If you have a blog yourself you can bet your sweet bippy that people here will come and visit your blogs and you might even pick up some new followers yourself too!

Anyhoo Happy Monday  and …  have a truly wonderful week!   Thank you so much for coming and joining me in having a coffee round the kitchen table.  I love seeing you here.

Sending squidges and lots of Monday love to all.  Be good to each other and  … may your God go with you.  ~

Author: The Art of Cobwebs - aka:- thecobweboriumemporium

Hello. I'm 'Cobwebs'. I live in a wee little cottage in the South of England, aptly called Cobweb Cottage. This little dwelling really is a cobweb factory. Not inside (well, occasionally) - but outside - flipping heck! This information should give you a clue as to why my blog is called The Art of Cobwebs aka: The Cobweborium Emporium. I've been arty and crafty from a very young age, and although my crafts have sometimes turned a corner and taken me in another direction, I've always crafted in some way, shape or form. One day, in the blink of an eye, life changed somewhat for me and the consequences were many. I had to find a new way of being 'artistic'. Card making; scrap-booking; producing ATC's and ACEO's; needle felting; Polymer clay; painting- but in a more relaxed style than I had before, and sewing, - are all things which I visit, as and when life allows. I've fairy recently become a Textile Artist and am enjoying this new creative outlet very much as it offers me so much scope for letting my imagination run through a grassy field and feel the wind in my hair - (mentally, of course). I love to create. To make things. I truthfully believe that the best gifts in the world are those in which you've given your time, rather than your cash. Thank you so much for visiting. Please visit my blog (link below) and have a look around. I'm sure you'll find something to enjoy, even if it's only a handful of jokes! (yes, seriously - there really are jokes!) Wishing you a truly blessed rest of your day! ~ Cobs. <3

  1. We have had a lovely day here in Victoria, and I have been out in the yard for most of it. 🙂
I have dandelions by the fluff load! but I do love that wee fairy fluff you have made. I have always loved pictures of the wee fluff balls. I don’t like what they can do to a yard with the millions of seeds that settle, but they are loved my bees and this is my reason for not fretting too much. Besides if the neighbours don’t look after their lawns and dandelions, then its not long before you get them right back again. There are a lot of people around here that don’t really care. I live in a trailer park on a first nations reserve and there are houses just behind me that have grass that is two feet high and tons and tons of dandelions, so right there, we just need a bit of wind and wha la, I get plenty more. lol
I hope you have great week and thank you for sharing your wee works of art. Oh and I also have lavender too. 🙂
    hugz from me to you.

    1. Hello Soozy
      lovely to see you 🙂

Dandelions and weeds . . . my grandfather taught me: One to seed, seven to weed. Meaning that it only took one year for weeds to seed themselves in your garden, and that one lot of seeds will then take you seven more years to weed those out.

But … who’s to say what’s a weed and what’s a flower? If you like them, then they’re flowers!
Wishing you a fabulous day and a truly great week.
Be safe, be happy and just be.

  2. ATC are huge here, I had heard about ACEO thanks for the education. I think your cards are lovely! I love your idea about fairies and bluebells. I love the poem for the dandelion wishes, I might have to borrow it for my toddler. It looks perfect on your painting. It would something I would buy to hang in a child’s room or play area.
Anyway, just wanted to let you know how much I enjoy your art and post.

    1. Hello Morning Scrapper
Aw glad you knew about ATC’s and ACEO’s.

They’re such stress free, tiny bits of artistic lovelies that I think everyone should know about them. A great way to just ‘do’ whatever takes you imagination on a journey of discovery, and away from the world and all it’s troubles.

Thrilled you find some enjoyment on the blog. Thank you so much for your beautiful comment and for your visits. It’s so, so lovely to see you.

  3. Oh my word Mrs Cobs, I knew you were talented but wow! These are definitely works of art. That little lavender in the pot is the sweetest thing. They’d all make lovely cards, or like you say pictures to go on the wall. Well done you! I wish I could paint, but my talents in that department don’t even extend to emulsioning a room! 😂 x

    1. Hello Mrs.Craft.
Ohh, thank you so much for your kind and beautiful comment. Bless your heart. ❤

You can paint. You really can. You just have to tell your brain to buzz off because it's like a jealous 'friend', who doesn't want you to find out that the length, width, breadth and depth of your talents haven't even been touched on yet! Ignore it. Tell it to have a coffee break, and while it's busy doing other things, cut yourself a piece or two of card to 2.5" x 3.5", and decorate that tiny bit of card in any way you want. You don't have to paint, you can draw, colour, stick, glue, fix, use glitters, adornments, feathers …. aw, you name it – if it fits within the boundaries of the piece of card, then use it!

Have a go. Make something beautiful happen and ignore your negative friend aka your brain.

Thanks for coming Mrs. C. and for the really lovely comment.

        1. It really is.
I think it’s that it’s such a tiny size, but .. if you don’t like the way something is going you can change it, or break it up, start again, or even just throw it away and start a new one!
Because it’s just this little itty thing, it makes you relax and doesn’t stress you out. I mean … you just can’t get stressed or bothered about such a tiny thing! lol.

  5. Dear Cobs,
Your exquisitely tiny art has taken my breath away! I’m so breathless in fact that I could not even scatter some dandelion seeds much farther than my own feet. Which is absolutely perfect because then the dandiest of flora will sprout and grow within easy reach!
I have a thought that your Framer is really a magician! How else could so much loveliness and whimsy be contained in such a tiny frame without the aid of some sort of spell! I believe that the magical mats surrounding your flowers if peeled back would expose vast gardens of painted floral treasures! These glorious tiny blooms are just a peek at the luscious landscapes and enchanted gardens from where your inspiration was born!
I’ll have daydreams of pixies and sprites dancing on flower petals for the rest of the day!
    Brightest of blessings!

    1. Hello dearest Tami.
      How lovely to see you.:)
I’m overjoyed that you like the ATC/ACEO’s … but concerned about your Asthma. Breathe poppet … BREATHE! In …… then ooooouuuuttt. Blow it out as if you were blowing down a straw.
And in ….. then out. In ….. out.

The seeding Dandelions … as long as you want them at your feet, then that’s where they’ll make their home.

The framer chap … I doubt he would call himself a magician. He just has the right tools for the job, and he charged me the *right* price (i.e. affordable for a nice product).

My inspiration for these little works of heart actually comes from my garden we had at our old cottage. But I know that it will eventually come from my garden(s). They’re beginning to get some character now, and the garden at the rear is starting to fill out with newly planted evergreens in different plants and colours. All very exciting.

Your daydreams of pixies and sprites is the perfect way to spend your days. 🙂 You stick with those, for life can only be bettered when Pixies and Sprites and popping in and out of your conscience. 😀
      Have a wonderful week, Tami.

  6. Cob, Have you been talking to my Mother? She has been after me to go miniature ever since I took up card making. .( I painted and drew small when in college. ) Now you’ve lit the fire and I’ll have to think about this in a serious fashion. I have been thinking of a series called …From My Window. We will see what happens. Love you and the are beautiful.

I shall try to do a little more painting and blog about it now and again.

  8. I have never heard of those little bitty works of art! I really like those. Have you ever put pressed flowers on them? And if so are there rules against laminating them so the flower stay on? I think that would be kind of fun!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. I’ve put pressed flowers which I’ve pressed from my own garden, on top of some papers which I decoupaged to the base of the ATC, then gave the whole thing a coat of spray MATT varnish to protect the flowers and stop them from peeling off the art or flaking, but I haven’t ever laminated them.
I can’t see that it would be ‘against the rules’ – as there aren’t really any real rules as such, apart from the size. They abolutely must NOT be any bigger, nor any smaller, than: 2.5″ x 3.5″. The size is set in stone and non negotiable.

The guidelines (which I copied and placed towards the begining of this post) kind of try to ‘encourage’ ATC/ACEO creators to do their best work and turn out items of quality, which they’re proud of.

I did forget to mention that both Artist Trading Cards, and Art Card Editions and Originals, should be signed, dated, named (if there is a name for the piece), on the back of the art work.

And of course, again, the difference between the two is:

ATC’s – are made for trading between artists, swapped, free of charge.

ACEO’s – are made specifically for sale. For money. (You’ll find lots for sale on Ebay).

I’ve been on the interwebby thing to look for more information which will perhaps help to plum out the bits of information I’ve already given …. and this was rather a nice site: http://www.easy-oil-painting-techniques.org/artist-trading-cards.html

AND … I didn’t know this before (but I do now) – Ebay have their own little section about ATC’s and ACEO’s here: http://www.ebay.com/gds/All-About-ATCs-Artist-Trading-Cards-and-ACEOs-/10000000001635101/g.html

Then if you’d like some ATC visual inspiration: https://uk.pinterest.com/capturedangel/artist-trading-cards/?lp=true

Hope this helps. I’m so thrilled that this has sparked your interest, and am SO wishing with all my might that you have a go at this and find it so enjoyable that you take it up as a stress free, thoroughly enjoyable hobby. Yes, seriously!
Sending OOOooodles of love and squidges too, ~ Cobs. xxx ❤

    1. Aw thank you Aunt Beulah.
I remembered how no one ever taught me what an ATC or ACEO was, and I felt thoroughly stupid for not knowing.
I would hate anyone to come for a read over a cup of coffee and feel that they were befuddled because they had no idea what I was talking about. A few words can make sure that everyone knows what the heck I’m going on about! LOL.

Thank you so much for coming Aunt Beulah, and for the beautiful comment.

  11. Oh my goodness! These are just lovely! I had never heard of these before. Perhaps I might give them a try sometime….but the size is a bit on the tiny side, I’m not sure I could color something that small. You do have such a talent for painting! I sometimes wish I could paint…maybe someday I will give it a try. For now, I will probably stick with my Copics and colored pencils. Really beautiful job! Thanks for brightening my day and for the information about these! 🙂

Please don’t be put off by he size, once you get going you’ll be surprised at how easy it is to work within that size, and your Copics and pencils would work brilliantly for you too.

Give it a try … I know you’ll get along fine. I just know you will.
