Things I’ve learned this week.

Hello, and HAPPY FRIDAY!  Today isn’t just the 14th of April, here in the UK.  Today is also Good Friday.

For those who might not know:  Good Friday is a Christian holiday to commemorate, or remember and give great respect to,  the event which we know as the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, and his death at Calvary,  which is told in the Christian bible.

I hope your week has been a good one, and that if any gremlins got into any of your days, you were able to scoot around them and play them at their own gremlin games.

My week has been ….  interesting.  Let me explain.

I learned YET AGAIN this week that the minute I go out and buy new nail polish …. I break a nail.  However this week, I bought THREE new nail polishes.  I wonderful deep wine colour, a fabulous nude colour and a lovely nut colour.  Three ….  now this alone SHOULD have told me what was about to happen…  but I just didn’t listen to what the universe was trying to tell me.

Well …  my hands, fingers and more importantly my nails, were all plotting against me and the day after I bought said nail varnishes … I broke not one but two fingernails. The next day I broke another fingernail and a thumb nail.  After that … the whole of my ‘nail world’  took a massive trip south, and I broke every single nailI now look like I have never had nice hands and wouldn’t know them if they poked me!   Hmpftttt!

I learned about these things this week too …

Coyotes in the United States have learnt how traffic lights work so that they can cross the road safely.  Yes.  Seriously!  (I know!  It made me smile from ear to ear too!) lol.

Franz Liszt was the first musician to have women’s underwear thrown at him.

Elvis (and this one blew me away...)…  was born with blonde hair.  His hair began to darken in his teens and by the age of 22, his hair colour was dark chestnut.

Echidna
An Echidna.  (photograph credit Australia Zoo)

A baby echidna is called a ‘puggle’.  (Isn’t that just one of the nicest words to say?  Try it;  “Puggle”.  It has a kind of in-built giggle).

Puggle
…  and this …  is a Puggle.  (photo credit:  Australia Zoo).

And on moving on from ‘cute’, and turning to …. well,  this:

I learned that in 2013, in Turkey, thieves stole an entire 22 tonne,  82 foot metal bridge overnight.   Yes, no joking!  It was the village’s main bridge over a local creek.

According to the Turkish publicationToday’s Zaman’, the dumbfounded villagers, who needed the bridge to reach their orchards, alerted police about the theft.  Police suspected that thieves dismantled the 82-ft.-long span to sell it as scrap metal — probably for about $12,000 at that time.

Aww … and this tickled me:

The very first armoured presidential car was a Cadillac that had previously belonged to  . . . .   –  wait for it  –  . . .   Al Capone.  (Al Capone – Used Furniture Dealer – as we’ve previously discussed!).

al-capone

If you are of a sensitive nature and don’t like any descriptive discussion regarding the mating of animals,  PLEASE skip the next fact:

We talked, a couple of weeks ago, about Ladybirds mating.  Now I’m going to edumacate you regarding bees…

Male bees – ‘drones’  – are happy to leave the business of the hive to the female workers,  leaving them free to pursue their sole vocation:  mating with the queen. Most of them are frustrated in this ambition, and those that make it die in the act.  After the lucky drone has caught the queen and mounted her,  he explodes with an audible pop as he ejaculates.  He then falls off the Queen Bee, usually leaving a portion of his phallus behind him.

And a little more Bee information which I’ve learned this week  (this time it’s not about s.e.x.):

Some bees literally shake pollen out of flowers by humming very loudly at them. Rapid muscle contractions produce forces of up to 30G – about three times the force of a fighter jet making a tight turn  – and the vibrations dislodge pollen grains from a flower’s anthers, in a process called ‘buzz pollination‘ or ‘sonication‘.  Honeybees don’t do it, but bumblebees and many others do;  various economically important plants, including kiwi fruits, blueberries and cranberries, are pollinated in this way.

Fascinating, eh?

More throw away little bits of interesting things I learned this week …

The chairman of a company is four times more likely to be a psychopath than the doorman.

China gets a new skyscraper every five days.

In 1999, more than 3,000 people were hospitalised after . . .  tripping over a laundry basket!  (I kid ye not!)

And finally, on our voyage of fascinating facts …  just to spoil your Easter of chocolate eating . . .

A lethal dose of chocolate for a human being is about 22 lb or 40 bars of Cadbury’s Dairy Milk.  A single M&M is enough to kill a small songbird.

And now … the reason you’re really here ….

THE JOKES!

What did one eye say to the other eye?  Between the two of us, something smells.

Did you hear about the man who fell into the upholstery machine?   Don’t worry. He’s completely recovered.

What did the Ocean say to the boat?  Nothing, it just waves

What happens when you throw a white hat into the red sea?  . . . . .  It gets wet

What did the banana say to the hippo? . . . . Nothing, Bananas don’t talk

How do you light up a Tennis Stadium? . . . . With a good match.

What did the grape say when it got stepped on? . . . It just let out a little wine.

and finally

here’s one for my favourite Chicken …. (Chicken Grandma)

What do you call a chicken at the north pole?  . . .  Lost

😀

Well that’s it …. well no, actually … that’s almost it.  I have a letter I need to post:

Dear Toys R Us I’ve had to visit my nearest store three times during the past week, and not once has any member of your staff smiled, acknowledged me by looking me in the eye when making an enquiry, or even looked at me when I made a purchase.  You need to do some staff retraining and possibly show your staff that they’re important to you so that they know that WE are important to you too.  I shall be writing more about this directly to you,  Trust Me.  ~  A furrowed brow customer, Cobs.

Ok … I’ve run to the post office and posted that, so all that’s left to do is to say a BIG THANK YOU to you for coming and having a coffee with me.  I so love seeing you here, all crowded around the kitchen table, laughing, chatting and just having a bit of fun.  Such a great feeling.

I wish you a lovely Friday, followed by a truly fantabulous weekend.  Do something different this weekend.  Go somewhere you haven’t been before.  Read a book you’ve been meaning to read.  Make a phone call to someone you haven’t spoken to in a while.  Tell someone how much you enjoy their company,  or appreciate them for _____   ….  well whatever it is you appreciate them for.

Make yourself happy, and make someone else happy.  It’s important.

Sending big Easter Squidges, from me here in my corner, to you there in yours.

Author: The Art of Cobwebs - aka:- thecobweboriumemporium

Hello. I'm 'Cobwebs'. I live in a wee little cottage in the South of England, aptly called Cobweb Cottage. This little dwelling really is a cobweb factory. Not inside (well, occasionally) - but outside - flipping heck! This information should give you a clue as to why my blog is called The Art of Cobwebs aka: The Cobweborium Emporium. I've been arty and crafty from a very young age, and although my crafts have sometimes turned a corner and taken me in another direction, I've always crafted in some way, shape or form. One day, in the blink of an eye, life changed somewhat for me and the consequences were many. I had to find a new way of being 'artistic'. Card making; scrap-booking; producing ATC's and ACEO's; needle felting; Polymer clay; painting- but in a more relaxed style than I had before, and sewing, - are all things which I visit, as and when life allows. I've fairy recently become a Textile Artist and am enjoying this new creative outlet very much as it offers me so much scope for letting my imagination run through a grassy field and feel the wind in my hair - (mentally, of course). I love to create. To make things. I truthfully believe that the best gifts in the world are those in which you've given your time, rather than your cash. Thank you so much for visiting. Please visit my blog (link below) and have a look around. I'm sure you'll find something to enjoy, even if it's only a handful of jokes! (yes, seriously - there really are jokes!) Wishing you a truly blessed rest of your day! ~ Cobs. <3

  1. Cobs, these posts of yours are brilliant. I actually feel as though I have spent a while at your kitchen table chatting and laughing. Learned all those new facts, had to make a note of the one about the Puggle having a built in giggle (I don’t want to forget that in a hurry). So happy to have found your blog. Happy Easter break to you. xx

    1. Hello Barbara, Happy Easter to you too.
Like you, I also feel like I’m sat around the table, chatting and laughing. By the time I’ve got to the end of tapping out the blog post on my keyboard, I genuinely feel like I’ve really enjoyed a great time with some friends. Such a lovely feeling.

I’m so thrilled that we found each other Barbara.
Have a lovely Easter. Not too many Chocolates! lol ~ Cobs. x

  2. I just love the funny joke for the Chicken Grandma! Sometimes, it is evidently so cold in Iowa that she must THINK that she is in the North Pole! Well…I have had the same problem at Toy R Us in Texas! Hmmmmm…must be a worldwide problem!!! Have a fun weekend and so sorry about your nail disaster!

    1. Hello KinderG.
LOL… the joke for Chicken Grandma … I think it will make her smile. 🙂 And yes, she must sometimes wonder if she’s woken up in the North Pole. I’ve read some of her posts and I think she deserves a medal for getting out of bed on those freezing cold, covered in snow days.

You find the same problems in Texas? But I thought they were all trained to be ultra welcoming and happy with customers, there in the US! Well, I hope that someone from Toys R Us will be reading this and report back to the Big Boss in charge of staff training!

The Nail disaster … it happens. But not normally all at once! Sheesh! lol
      Happy Easter to you.

  3. Have a lovely Easter weekend Mrs Cobs, looks like chocolate eating will have to be restricted to only 21lb now. This week I learned life is short and you never know what is around the corner, a bit sad unfortunately after the untimely death of a former colleague of mine. I also learned that I can make curtains, slightly wonky ones but they work. Enjoy Easter! X x

    1. Oh, Mrs. Craft, I’m so sorry to hear of the loss of your former colleague. Life really is short and we aren’t told of the month, the week, the day, the hour nor the minute that we will be called home.

Many Congratulations on the Curtain making! I can still remember my first pair of lined curtains. I was so over-joyed that I felt I could rule the world when I hung them. So I know exactly how you must be feeling! Well done, you clever thing!

Actually laughed at you being forced to restrict your chocolate intake to a safe 21lb this Easter. LOLOL.

      1. Thanks very much, I think the children may have collected a potentially lethal dose of chocolate at our allotment Easter egg hunt, I might have to help them out by eating some and reducing the risk. X x

        1. ABSOLUTELY! It’s your parental responsibility to action ‘Risk Assessment’ and act upon it. You need to take the appropriate action to safeguard your little darlings from harm.

Helping them eat some of the chocolate is ESSENTIAL – in order to ensure that they don’t eat too much of it and cause themselves harm!

I fully support love and care of your children. Helping them eat chocolate is the RIGHT THING TO DO!

It’s a mucky job, parenting, but someone has to do it. 😉

That’s a terrible state of affairs with your fingernails… you need to take them in hand. Hehehe! A little joke there.
Service with a smile is all we need when we go shopping (well, apart from the *shopping* that is…) I hope your letter yields some results.
Have a good weekend. I’m smiling as I type this! 🙂

Ooooo… Turkish Delight ❤ … the one’s with the chocolate on the outside? If so, I may have to pop along in the dead of night and steal one.
I haven’t had one of those in … oh my goodamiss…. I can’t remember the last time I had one, it’s that long ago!

Listen out for noises in the middle of the night … if you happen to find a Turkish Delight missing …. bwah ha ha ha ha . {scoff, chomp, snaffle} I’m sure it won’t be me. 🙂

  5. Dear Cobs,
    Happy Easter Weekend!
Thank you for aiming a spotlight on the nefarious nature of housekeeping tools. I have long suspected that my laundry was plotting to overtake my home. I see the dirty clothing gathering in increasingly larger groups. I know it’s a only a matter of time before the soiled garment mob makes their coup attempt! Thanks to your timely warning regarding the laundry basket being the Trojan horse for the uprising I will be keeping a closer eye out for signs of a sneak attack!

    1. Hello dearest Tami.
Happy Easter weekend to you too!
Housekeeping tools are impliments of the divil! Who else would design items, aimed mainly (originally) at women? They are tools of CONTROL! Designed to A) make you work, doing the same thing day after day. A never ending, never ceasing, laborious job. and B) Make you feel guilty if you try to ignore them. and C) If you do ignore them, they are programmed to jump out at you and cause you HARM!

Products of a divil. I got them sussed a year after I got married. Horrible things. LOCK THEM IN THE SHED OR THE GARAGE Tami. Don’t let them take over!
Brightest blessings, with an Easter Egg on top.

  6. Oh Cob, So sorry about your nails. I really can’t relate because mine are hard as rocks. And I can’t use the pretty colors of polish out there today as my short fat fingers look all the more short and fat when colored. I do ,on occasion which isn’t every often, use clear just to look more polished. LOL
Do have a blessed Easter weekend and hope little Cob finds lots of pretty eggs.

    1. Long thin or short and chubby … hands are hands are hands. I bet with the right colour, your hands would look wonderful. You need to treat yourself to a manicure, in a salon. Let them pamper your hands and stroke and massage them. You’ll want to fall asleep. It’s SO relaxing Beverly.

Why has this week been awful for you? Unload it … it loses it’s sting when it’s been aired.

Running away? Nope, that cannot be allowed.
      1) It changes nothing. Your problems don’t go away, they just follow you, and bug you even more then.
      2) Running away takes an effort which could be better used in other ways.

Problems aren’t given to us to make us run away from them.
You have to run WITH them. Until you’ve got through them.
      But you know that.

Kilimanjaro isn’t an easy climb, and it has three volcanic cones – not just the one which everyone presumes.

BUT .. the climb is necessary, for it’s the only way to climb upon that which has been put in front of us in order for us to over-come. You can try to walk round it, but you’ll end up learning that you need to do it the more difficult way, otherwise you’ll just keep going round and round and round.

BUT … I might have totally missed the point of your wanting to run away …. and it could be that you have a nest of bees making a home in your roses … or you dropped a bottle of cooking oil on the floor … or, even as I did this morning, … dropped a bottle of antiseptic on the bathroom floor, . . . and it didn’t have the lid screwed on! Eeek! [sigh] (there’s no remedy for my brand of stupidity).

Whatever’s irking or upsetting you … share it with me. (You can email it if it’s too personal to share here).
In the meantime … I’m sending oodles of love and prayers are being sent, heaven bound ~ Cobs. x

They’ll very soon be happy about the new floor. Then they’ll drive you nuts telling you they don’t understand why on earth you made such a fuss about them having a new floor! 😀

Many CONGRATULATIONS on the happy news of a (eventually) new baby! Coo… number 6! How incredible.

I can fully appreciate how GT feels … he wants a boy to play with and build Lego cars and buildings! He’s very likely fed up to the rafters of playing with dollies and cosmetics. Bless his beautiful heart. 🙂

    1. PS I suffer the same fate with nail polish, bought 2 new nail polishes as my others had gone rock hard through lack of use, then discovered why….had no nails by the end of the second week! Did you know that handling paper makes your nails weak? May have something to do with why we can’t seem to keep any, but what helps mine is an M&S Hand cream made with royal jelly if you can find it, cos I think they have jolly well gone and stopped making it! How very dare they!!! x

        1. Clever you! That’s the one 👏 It stopped my nails from splinting and they grew quite quickly and did seem to be stronger. Since I stopped using it, they are definitely weaker and don’t get any size before they break. Hope it helps you, it’s worth trying. Really keeps your skin soft too (l have dish pan hands), comes in a hand-y size too 😁 x

    2. We are in agreement Kim, about the name Puggle for a pet. Mr.Cobs and I have said for several years that when the time comes for our hearts to decide upon another dog, we might very well take a Pug to live with us. Puggle, therefore, would make a brilliant name! Puggle the Pug.

However … we’ve also added a French Bulldog to the list so it might change slightly … maybe Fruggle, or Buggle, or perhaps Freggle. Oooo… yes, I like Freggle! LOL.

With regard to the Chairman of the Company being the psychopath … I’d say that here in Cobs Towers, it’s the crafter who’s going dolallytap!

And about the bees humming (not touching the other topic lol)….I am going to have to keep an eye on the bumblebees around here…we seem to have a lot of them. They love my flower garden so I am going to keep an eye on them and an ear tuned for humming.
Have a blessed Easter weekend, steer clear of laundry baskets and do NOT eat a lethal dose of chocolate!

    1. lol… so glad that you got to see the chicken joke which I intentionally included just for you. Yes … the bees humming! The children will love that … although mind, they’ll likely think you’re making it up, but you can tell them from me that it’s really, really, cross my heart, true.

I have to admit that about two or three years ago I commented to Mr.Cobs that I thought that some of the bumblebees we get in our garden are really loud … particularly when they’re ‘loving’ the lavender in our front garden. So to learn this about how bees ‘hum’ the pollen out of flowers suddenly made a small explosion go off inside my head! I wonder if my bumbles are doing that to our lavender!

I’m totally steering clear of laundry baskets …. not taking a chance like that right now. My balance is shot to pieces (and not because of drink, although I do blame that as an excuse lol), so even walking past our coffee table has challenged me in the last 24 hours. (and I have the bruise to prove it!)

Have a wonderful Easter weekend … and likewise … keep the chocolate intake to no more than 20lb, so that you stay within the safer limits of the poisoning level. 😉

Oh … and if the Grand babies look like they have more than is safe … help them out by eating their chocolate so that they don’t get sick. 😀

Thrilled that the jokes made you smile. As for the finger nails … I fancy it’s going to be a few weeks before they’re long enough to break again. My hands look proper awful right now. I do so love longer nails, pretty nail varnishes and my very most favourite, French Nail Polish, with white tips.

It was the three bottles of nail polish. I saw them, loved them and bought them. Thereby setting a chain re-action going of greedy girly being punished = broken finger nails BIG TIME!
      Smy own fault.tsk tsk.

Have a wonderful, tranquil Easter Weekend, my beautiful blogging friend. ~ Cobs. x

      1. I have visions of a naughty ‘Nail Gremlin’ sat waiting for you to succumb to pretty colours in nail varnish rubbing his hands with glee when you fell into his cunning trap 😦 at least you should have put said Gremlin out of action for quite a while as he fell off his perch with a mahoosive clatter and doing himself an injury best not spoken off in polite company

        1. I’m telling you P …. if I catch the little *ugger, he won’t fall off his perch, he’ll leave the perch, at great speed, and come to land somewhere out of the Earths atmosphere!

As for his injury … that will come from the use of two blue bricks, out in the garden.

That’ll sort the little s*d out.
          hmpfft! 😡

    1. ‘lo Flo! 😀
Happy Easter to you too.Thrilled you like the post and got a few laughs via the jokes. Aw, the nail fiasco … I feel it’s my own fault, because I bought 3 nail varnishes all at once. It was too much of a challenge to the ‘Fate’ gremlins who like to get a laugh wherever they can. tsk tsk.

Hope your Easter is wonderful and that you’re nibbling away at chocolate as I type.
      Sending love ~ Cobs. x

  13. That coyote fact is a gem! You have to love them for that. I have seen a pigeon walking along a pavement and then crossing the road at the zebra crossing, and also one flying low, but doing the same thing! Looks like I need another trip to the pet shop to get me a puggle…or a pair of puggles…maybe a posse….(3 puggles)… Thanks for the laughs!! Xx

    1. Hello Puff. 😀
I loved the clever Coyote too. But then… it’s dogs (or of the dog family) … I loooove dogs. (Love cats and other animals too — although not so much crocodiles and sharks) … but dogs are my bestest most favourite animals.

I’d have liked to see the pigeon! Oh. My. Goodness!!! I’d have been rolling on the floor with laughter.

A posse of Puggles. Now that sounds like a fun time which I’d like to get involved with too. You can be the Sherriff, and I’ll be the leader of the Posse. … just don’t point the gun at me or I’ll cry. Ok?
      Okay. 😀
