They Carry Secrets in their Wings

Hello, good morning and …. Happy Monday!  Hope your weekend was good, and a handful of smiles was found among the hours.

I made this card (above) about two and a half weeks ago, but I couldn’t blog about it until it had been received by the recipient – a fellow blogger,  who I wanted to send a surprise smile to through the post.  Now it’s safely in her hands, I can share it here.

Made on a 6×6″ scored and folded card, I firstly fixed the blue background you see in the photo.  After that I distressed and inked up some pretty script card, and added some vintage blue baby bobble trim across the top third (ish).

I then turned my attention to making the flower ….  Start with a circle of card, onto which glue some stamens or small flowers, and, if you have it, a little dried gypsophila, just to give it a bit of movement and depth.  Then add a piece of frayed muslin or loose weaved fabric.  Finally add your flower to top the whole lot off.  You can’t see it in the photo but I gave the flower a very light touch of clear glue, just in a few places, then added some chunky clear/ice glitter (not really glitter but I’ll have to call it that) which gave the flower just a bit of dusty looking interest.

I then added the whole of this built up flower to the top of a bright blue, crocheted doiley.

Secrets in their Wings note pin

The sentiment on the card was one I stamped, but it began life as one long sentiment, and too long for the little piece of script card I wanted it to go on.  So I stamped each word separately, cut the words out, and then placed them onto the cardstock and glued in place.  The sentiment is held by a Tim Holtz memo pin, which I poked into the blue doily, but it’s held in place with a little glue.

I fussy cut the birds and butterfly out, but wanted them to have an ‘old’ look, so very loosely coloured them using some water colours, and by holding a water brush to add the colour – but holding the brush at the very end, so that I didn’t apply much pressure, and also couldn’t make them look too ‘painted’.  I needed them to look old, so that ‘not quite coloured’  look did the job.

Secrets in their Wings Final
taken with the flash on, but it’s kind of whited it out a little.

And basically …. that was all there was to it!  🙂

I’m sorry about the blurry photos.  They are the best of around 12 pictures which were all rubbish.  [sigh] …  I’ll blame it on my staff.  Yes!  It was the Butlers fault!  lol.

If there’s anything I’ve missed or that you want more information on, please just ask away in a comment, and I promise to answer.

Thank you so much for coming and sharing a coffee with me.  I love seeing you … but you know that so I won’t go on. 😀

I wish you a fun Monday.  May the birds sing, the sun shine, and … till we meet again, may your God hold you in the palm of His hand.

Have a truly blessed day!

Author: The Art of Cobwebs - aka:- thecobweboriumemporium

Hello. I'm 'Cobwebs'. I live in a wee little cottage in the South of England, aptly called Cobweb Cottage. This little dwelling really is a cobweb factory. Not inside (well, occasionally) - but outside - flipping heck! This information should give you a clue as to why my blog is called The Art of Cobwebs aka: The Cobweborium Emporium. I've been arty and crafty from a very young age, and although my crafts have sometimes turned a corner and taken me in another direction, I've always crafted in some way, shape or form. One day, in the blink of an eye, life changed somewhat for me and the consequences were many. I had to find a new way of being 'artistic'. Card making; scrap-booking; producing ATC's and ACEO's; needle felting; Polymer clay; painting- but in a more relaxed style than I had before, and sewing, - are all things which I visit, as and when life allows. I've fairy recently become a Textile Artist and am enjoying this new creative outlet very much as it offers me so much scope for letting my imagination run through a grassy field and feel the wind in my hair - (mentally, of course). I love to create. To make things. I truthfully believe that the best gifts in the world are those in which you've given your time, rather than your cash. Thank you so much for visiting. Please visit my blog (link below) and have a look around. I'm sure you'll find something to enjoy, even if it's only a handful of jokes! (yes, seriously - there really are jokes!) Wishing you a truly blessed rest of your day! ~ Cobs. <3

    1. Hello Barbara
Aw how lovely to see you.
I’m over-joyed that you like the card. I wish I was a better photographer, as I really don’t think the pictures do this card justice. It’s such a pretty thing, and kind of tactile too.
Thank you so much for coming and for your beautiful comment.

        1. Beverly … don’t stress over it. It’s not meant to be a stress thing. Just a bit of fun and something to do when there’s nothing else to do and you’re bored. Don’t try to do everything. I found spinning plates, while juggling was something I can no longer do. So I don’t expect anyone else to be the magic thing they were when they were really young to be able to do it either.
Love you, you bundle of fun! ~ Cobs. x

  1. You have such a way with words. That card deserves to be framed afterwards, it’s lovely and I love the sentiment. I do believe that only on some special days, my Dad comes to me in the garden. He loved Hummingbirds, loved them, he called them Bummingherds. *insert smile here. One day the wee little bird came right in front of me and fluttered there for a few moments. It made my heart sing. My mother, she flutters around here sometimes, follows me for a few minutes, she is the Butterfly. Don’t know how many of you believe in this sort of thing, but I do, so just let me be in my secret place.
Very lovely card Cobs, very lovely, you have added just the perfect amount of colour to the birds and butterfly. 🙂 Have a lovely week. The sun is shining here again this morning, got a wee bit of a frost, but nothing like last week, so it must have been a wee bit cloudy out there.
I will be able to get out in the yard again.

    1. I know exactly what you mean about the birds and butterflys, Soozie.
When daughter No.2 got married, a few days before the wedding I was in the bedroom, and sat on the side of the bed in order to talk to my mum. Daughter No.2 doted on my mum (her Nanny) and was very distressed when she passed on. So I sat on the bed and out loud, said to my Mum “please be there for her Mom. Let us know that you’re there. It would mean the world to her. But let us know. Show up. Do something. Be a butterfly. A white butterfly.”, and I left it there.

On the day of the wedding, after the church ceremony, we piled outside and began getting our cameras out, when all of a sudden, from nowhere, came a white butterfly. It flew around Daughter No.2’s head then around new son in law. No.2 and new SiLaw moved over to the tree, and the butterfly followed. Pictures were taken and everything was fine and groovy.

We then travelled several miles to the site of what was originally a Monks Abbey, and all had a Wedding Picnic there … and what joined us? A white butterfly!

When I looked at the photographs a few days later, I noticed something on a couple of photos of the newly married couple leaving the church. There was something which I didn’t see when I was stood there taking photos …. a kind of white swish of … I know not what, as if it was coming out of the church with the newly weds. It was ‘see through’, but it was white … like smoke – but not like smoke. None of us saw it with our eyes on the day, but there is was, plain as the nose on your face, on the photographs! Diffent photos, different angles. But it was there.

Delighted that you like the card Soozy. Thank you so much for your fabulous comment, and for coming and having a coffee with me.
Bless your heart. ~ Cobs. x

      1. I completely understand the smoke but not smoke. That was indeed your Mum telling you, she was there besides the obvious of the white butterfly. That was amazing and comforting too. I totally get it. Thank you Cobs for your lovely reply. It’s good to know not everyone thinks you are nutty. 🙂 Thanks for that.
        Talk to you again soon.

        1. Y’know Soozy … I don’t really care if other people think I’m nutty, for whatever reason. I’m not going to let it bother me. So don’t you let it bother you Soozy.
It’s not what they’re thinking about you, that they should be worried about. It’s what YOU’RE thinking about THEM. 😉

Yes, like you, I think that was mum showing me that she was there. And you’re right, it did feel wonderful.

                1. Well she’d only have to walk in the room and I’d instantly give in, begin crying and be lay on the floor, curled up sucking my thumb and saying “take the nasty lady away, Puff. Take the nasty lady away”….

…. so I think I’ve won that round. Your turn. 😀

  3. I’m not the crafty type, though my mom, grandmother, and great aunts tried, but I admire the crafts created by others, and, for some strange reason, I love to read about the process followed to make something that seems like magic to me. The card is beautiful.

    1. Ohh Aunt Beulah, thank you so much.
What a truly beautiful compliment. I’m just thrilled to pieces that you like the card.

I bet, if we lived near to each other, I’d have you crafting within a week. We could use my craft room and craft and laugh and share some cake and coffee together.
Sadly we have a big pond between us. But a gal can dream! lol

  4. Dear Cobs – please tilt your ear closer, I’m going to say something and I would feel just dreadful if darling Ms. Puff heard me. I might like your cards a teeny tiny itsy bitsy bit more than hers.

Please understand that – I LOVE Puff’s cards – I’ve compared them to the works of The Masters, and think that she should be showing them in posh galleries! But this….this is a true masterpiece! I’m talking Louvre quality!

I am dreadful! Poor Puff with her haunted oven troubles. I take it back! I love both of your cards equally! Who am I do judge? I can barely find an envelope to fit the cheesy horridly mass produced Hallmark greeting cards in the general store!!!

    But I CAN crochet doilies!

    1. Actually laughing out loud here.
I thought for a moment that I was going to have to send you to the ‘Consider it’ chair, to consider your decision. Puff makes THE most incredible cards, so different from mine, and from any one else to be honest.

But … you didn’t need the ‘consider it’ chair because you jumped in and considered it yourself. See how brilliant you are? You deserve a big cake for your wonderfulness. AND … I understand that if you eat something and no one else sees you eating it, then it doesn’t contain any calories. 🙂

You can crochet doilies??? I am SOoooo jealous of you! I’m trying to teach myself to crochet, and I’m having a tiny bit of success, but I aspire to make something lovely…. so I’m keeping on trying until I get it right.

Thanks for the lovely chat… I’ve been giggling like a schoolgirl. 😀

      1. Puff is amazing isn’t she! I absolutely loathed the idea that I could ever like anyone else’s marvelous handiwork. I fell victim to your enchanted web and needed to break myself free of your glorious cardstock, ribbon, and silk flower witchcraft!! I have piled heaps and heaps of admiration on the Exalted Ms. Puff’s Cardsterpieces! I need to consult a thesaurus to find more words to describe the breadth and depth of her talent!
But you’re right – I should seat myself in the “Consider it” chair for the implication alone! I heard rumor that there is cake being served in the “Consider it” chair. I may be mistaken though. When I hear the word cake being bandied about I become quite addled and lose all ability to focus on reality. Do you think it will be chocolate cake??
        I should go check.
……(the remainder of this comment is a series of unintelligible muffled noises as Tami is under a chair looking for cake crumbs).

  5. What a beautiful card! If I try to put so many pretty things together it looks like a dogs dinner, but you’ve done it really well. It’s tasteful, pretty and I just want to touch all the layers. What a super card x

LOVE the name of your blog: Hodgepodge … a word from my childhood used by my Grandma, and I adopted it. Fabulous!
