What I Learned This Week

HAPPY Friday!  Don’t you just love Fridays?  They have such a happy sound about them.  Say it…  FRIDAY!   When I say it, it sounds like it’s a bottle of fizzy bubbles, which will make a BIG POP sound when it’s opened.

Y’know … I think Friday ought to be re-named – FunDay.

[stands on footstool and takes up her trusty sword in one hand, and puts the other on her hip] …  “Let it be known by all those who hear my voice,  that from this moment on,  Friday will no longer be called Friday, but instead it will be called FunDay.  It is now proclaimed,  and will be written into history,  that on this day, of 9th of March in the year 2017,  FunDay  began!“.

There.  It’s done.  Spread the word …  from now on, the day after Thursday, but before Saturday is, from this day, to be called —> FUNDAY!

So anyhoo …  you and I know why you’re here – it’s to find out all the things I’ve learned this week.  So shall we crack on and I’ll educationamalise you in the same way I’ve been educationamalised?  Got your coffee?  Let’s go then!   …..  (this first one I apologise to the boys who probably will roll their eyes …  but,  I’m a girl.  What can I say? [smiles and shrugs])…

I learned this week …. That I absolutely ADORE the new cosmetic brushes which the cosmetic world introduced us to,  ‘fairly’ recently(ish).  I’ve been seeing these new style cosmetic brushes – thicker, more lush and way more soft,  than I’m used to using for a time now, but they seemed like a bit of a ‘new box of tricks’ which I really didn’t need, so I didn’t fall into the trap of buying.  Besides … some of them are quite a price too!  However, I went into a store near where I live about two weeks ago and they had a special offer section of items which they had left overs of,  and, since new stock was about to come in, they’d reduced the old stock items.  Amongst everything there was one cosmetic brush.  All boxed up and looking like a cloud made out of the softest ‘hair’ known to man.  (It’s not ‘real’ hair or fur … but can’t remember what the box said it was).  I looked at it, picked it up, put it down, then .. picked it up again.  They’d reduced the thing to £2 – an absolute bargain.  I uhmed and ahhed, and told myself I was being daft.  I didn’t need a brush to apply foundation.  (I use cosmetic sponges for goodness sake!).  So I did no more  … I put it in my basket and bought it.  (sigh … a girl can’t resist a great bargain!).

I got home and put it on my dressing table.  Every now and again I would pick it up and stroke it over my hand just to feel the softness.  It took me ten days before I used it.  Oh  My  Goodness!  WHAT A SURPRISE I GOT!!  Girls … if you use foundation cream when you put on your cosmetics and don’t currently own one of these brushes, you HAVE to buy yourself a brush to apply your foundation cream.  There are no stripes, no streaks, and … it doesn’t dry out half way during application – so no dragging of your skin!  The brush gives the perfect look to your ‘finish’.  Instead of a flat, solid-looking colour, you get an ‘airbrushed’ finish.  Everything is smoother, no signs of over-applying in any area, and no finish lines around your jaw or down your neck.

Not ‘my’ brush, but a piccie of one as near to it as I could find on the interwebby. My brush has a pink handle and the brushy part is slightly fuller.

The brush I bought (I should have taken a photo of it. tsk tsk.  sorry!) is a short brush with a short handle, and a huge cloud of soft fluffy fur.  You apply a (roughly) penny sized blob of foundation to the back of your hand, and then you softly swirl your brush around and around picking up the foundation on all of the bristles, then using the same swirling motion, apply the foundation cream to your face – taking it over your eyes, around and over your nose and all over your face, up to your hairline and down your neck.  Then, take a mirror over to the window and have a really good look at your face.  You’ll be surprised at how airbrushed you look.  But … you don’t look like you have foundation cream on.  You just look a more perfect version of yourself.

I’m so thrilled with this new brush  – so much so that I thought I’d tell you about it,  just incase you might fancy a try of one of these new brushes too!

Ok… now I’ve bored the boys to pieces and they’re all snoring … (sorry boys) …

I’ve also learned this week …  That Samsung (yes, the makers of that unfortunately exploding Galaxy note 7, which people burned their fingers with  last year) do things other than phones,  computers  and TV’s.  Would you believe …  Samsung is currently making  …   the Worlds BIGGEST Container Ship … which will have a quarter of a mile carrying space.  A QUARTER OF A MILE LONG!   That’s four football fields long!  It will carry 20,150 shipping containers, – so unloading that little lot isn’t going to be a rushed process!

The Container Ship is going to cost $609 million dollars – (just in case you’re interested in buying one) – and it will be ready, they say, to move loads of freight sometime this year, 2017.   However … the huge vessel will be staying in the Pacific,  because, at 193 feet wide, it’s too big to fit through the Panama Canal.

Poor thing.  It’s not yet even had it’s christening and it’s already suffering exclusion because of its size!

But, Samsung aren’t stopping there … they’ve got a ‘transparent’  truck with TV screens on all sides too.

I can’t help but wonder how many accidents it will cause because people will be watching the TV screen of what’s happening ahead of the truck, and not notice that the truck itself has put its brakes on.   Eeeek!  :/

I also learned, via a visit to the doctor’s surgery where I picked up a bit of reading matter, a few things about Mother’s Day ….

I know that countries around the world celebrate their Mother’s Day on different days to ourd, so I might be talking ‘out of season’ for you in your corner of the world, but … Mother’s Day here in the UK, will be celebrated on the 26th of March (this month).  It always happens on the fourth Sunday of Lent, and originally it had religious traditions attached to it.

I learned, courtesy of that brochure I picked up at the doctors,   that back in the sixteenth century, it was a celebration of the ‘mother church’ and people would return to the church in which they were baptised, or where they attended as a child.  Thus families would be reunited.  This was known as going  ‘a mothering’  or Mothering Sunday.  It was commonplace for the Lent fast, which prohibited sweet, rich foods and meat, to be lifted a little and for a Simnel cake to be shared.

Years later, youngsters working as servants were given an annual day off to visit their mothers and would take gifts.  This was called ‘Mother’s Day’.

The first official Mother’s Day was organised by Ann Jarvis in 1908, in West Virginia, as a memorial to her mum.  By the 1920’s however, Ann had become disillusioned by the commercialism of the day and especially the common use of printed greet cards.  Celebrating the day became less popular.  It wasn’t until the second World War when soldiers wanted to acknowledge their distant mothers, that the day grew in popularity once more.

So … if you’re in the UK, you have no excuse for forgetting Mother’s Day this year – it’s on the 26th of March!

And finally, in your educationamalisation ….

I learned this week about a fabulous sounding App called Duolingo.    It’s an excellent language app which teaches you languages using mini-games,  and they recently added the ability to learn with a friend.  Très bien!

So I checked it out!  It’s a lovely website, very bright and exceptionally friendly looking.  You aren’t made to sit there for hours while you get frustrated because you can’t keep up with the lesson.

You can choose from many languages – Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Irish, Dutch, Danish, Swedish, oh – and English!  (I think there may be more languages, but those are the main ones I remembered).  And you can choose how much time each day you feel you can commit to learning – starting from just 5 minutes!  34 hours of Duolingo are equivalent to a half-year (semester) of university-level education.  And …  it’s totally FREE!

LINK for Duolingo is HERE—> https://www.duolingo.com/   –  it will open in another window for you.

OK… enough  learning You’re here for the jokes so let’s get our chuckle muscles ready ….  On your marks.  Get set.   GO!….

How do you turn a duck into a soul singer?  —  Put it in the oven until it’s Bill Withers

My friend drowned in a bowl of muesli.  —  A strong currant pulled him in.

What’s pink and fluffy?   —  Pink fluff.

What’s blue and fluffy?  —  Pink fluff holding it’s breath.

I used to have a problem where I couldn’t stop naming classic American sitcoms,   but I’m over it now.   Ahh, Happy Days.

I was walking the dogs when all of a sudden they vanished into thin air.  Not sure where they went, but I’ve got some leads.

Bought a litre of Tipp-Ex yesterday.  Huge mistake.

What did the buffalo say to his son as he left for college?  Bison.

Why didn’t the melons run off to get married?  Because they cantaloupe.

My friend asked me if I could please stop singing  ‘Wonderwall’.    I said maybe.

I’ve started a business building yachts in my attic.   Sails are going through the roof.

AND finally . . .

Did you know that owls can’t breed in the rain?   It’s too wet to woo.

I hope you’ve got a grin out of one or more of those.  I love funnies.  I think I may have the best worked out chuckle muscle ever!  The rest of my body is totally rubbish, but my chuckle muscle … ah… that’s one to be proud of.  😀

Thank you so much for coming and having a coffee with me.  I’ve so enjoyed your company and really appreciate you coming.

My apologies to regular readers  for being quiet this week.  I had to take my elderly cat on her final trip to the vet.  She was 22 years old and the most wonderful squeaky voiced little thing.  I loved her dearly.  It was a terrible few days and I spent them feeling miserable, shedding a few tears and missing her. The oddest thing is that I keep ‘hearing’ her.  I was in the craft room and swear I heard her just outside the door.  I heard her in the house too.  Mr. Cobs said it was one of our other cats, (we have two other cats) but it really did sound like her.

I had a play in my craft room mid week, and made a few things – but none of them were finished or at a point where I could photograph them, so I’ll share them with you next week.  Oh … and I realised today that we haven’t had a Give-Away for aaages.  So perhaps next week we could do one of those again!  (In case anyone is interested!)

May you have a truly lovely weekend.  May peace reside over your home, love find its way to your heart and a smile be ever ready to show itself upon your face.

Sending you oodles of the squishy stuff, with a squidge or two hidden in there as well.

Author: The Art of Cobwebs - aka:- thecobweboriumemporium

Hello. I'm 'Cobwebs'. I live in a wee little cottage in the South of England, aptly called Cobweb Cottage. This little dwelling really is a cobweb factory. Not inside (well, occasionally) - but outside - flipping heck! This information should give you a clue as to why my blog is called The Art of Cobwebs aka: The Cobweborium Emporium. I've been arty and crafty from a very young age, and although my crafts have sometimes turned a corner and taken me in another direction, I've always crafted in some way, shape or form. One day, in the blink of an eye, life changed somewhat for me and the consequences were many. I had to find a new way of being 'artistic'. Card making; scrap-booking; producing ATC's and ACEO's; needle felting; Polymer clay; painting- but in a more relaxed style than I had before, and sewing, - are all things which I visit, as and when life allows. I've fairy recently become a Textile Artist and am enjoying this new creative outlet very much as it offers me so much scope for letting my imagination run through a grassy field and feel the wind in my hair - (mentally, of course). I love to create. To make things. I truthfully believe that the best gifts in the world are those in which you've given your time, rather than your cash. Thank you so much for visiting. Please visit my blog (link below) and have a look around. I'm sure you'll find something to enjoy, even if it's only a handful of jokes! (yes, seriously - there really are jokes!) Wishing you a truly blessed rest of your day! ~ Cobs. <3

  1. So sorry your darling kitty has gone over the rainbow bridge *filling up with tears* I sure know what a huge hole such a loss can leave in your heart.
I’m not a huge make up type a gal … just on special occasions / when Beloved insists it’s about time we strut our stuff of an evening ~ BUT I might invest in said brush as it sounds sooo lushly soft LOL
As for the ‘what is pink & fluffy’ HAhahahahahahaha mega

    1. Ah, the simple ones are sometimes the ones which take your chuckle muscle by surprise. LOL>

Thank you Mrs P, for your kind words regarding my cat, Miss Bunty B. .. or ‘Squeaky’ as I was want to call her because of the way she talked in little squeaky noises.

I had her since she was approximately 4/5 weeks old and not expected to live (by our vet). But despite being a teeny tiny scrap of nothing, she decided she rather liked the 24 hours a day treatment she got from her new servament, so decided to stay – which I was forever grateful for. I loved her dearly. She was such an absent minded old girl, but retained that soft, gentle understanding of all things – but she told anything which came into the house that she was the boss, (gently and nicely) and they absolutely agreed. Every single one of them. They all had masses of respect for her.

A truly astounding thing to watch and such a great puzzlement to us as she was just so tiny and so ultra polite about things. Bless her dear little heart.

The cosmetic brush … if, when you glam it up a bit – you wear foundation, then yes, it’s very worth it. After my first try I was totally won over. I never knew that my skin could look that good, at this ‘ere age! Such a beautiful finish. Very much looked more like it had been done by someone who knew what they were doing, (instead of a duffer like me). lol.
Sending squidges and lovey stuff ~ me. xx

        1. That’s EXACTLY the same look I normally sport! However, when I go out I wear make-up so that I don’t scare folk. 😮

The additional thing it does (which I forgot to mention) … is that, if you have any imperfecions, like a spot making an appearance, or a bit of freckling which you don’t like, etc … this brush method of applying your foundation seems to somehow cover over those things. AND …it reduces the noticability of those ‘smile lines’ around your eyes, and it also helps to colour out the dark circles .. however, I’m a creature of habit so I still use a little concealer for those – just in case.

But, the brush is the new cosmetic Queen of the show, here in Chez Cobwebs. She’s sporting the Medal of Excellence. ❤ 😀

Bunty B … she was such a wonderful brave little pusscat. She was almost blind, and had the cat version of alzheimers. She would ask to go out into the garden, then once he door had been opened, she would stand on the decking, trying to remember why she was out there. The memory wouldn’t tell her, so she would turn around and come back in again, only to do that same ‘journey’ over, and over again, until eventually she remembered why she wanted to go out.

She made us laugh, made us cry and made me very happy. I had to teach her all the things that a mommy cat would normally have taught her – how to cover up the evidence in the litter tray; how to scent mark (which caused a horrible impetigo type of mega sore rash up the sides of my face); how to scratch a scratch post, etc. And she learned how much she adored wrapping herself around my neck and being a fur scarf, alllll the time. Bless her beautiful heart.

                    1. Well it gives him something to do…. and staring at you is good because it helps him focus on what is important. 🙂

Now is the time to ask him for aaaaaanything you want. Because he’ll feel so guilty that he was caught staring at you that he’ll agree to more crafting products, more fabric, or …. well just about anything! (Even cleaning the car!)
                      Guilt… it’s such a wonderful tool.

    1. Hello Kathy.
Yes. Both Alf Capone and Maisy Dotes noticed straight away that Bunny (as I used to call her) wasn’t in the house. They both quietly looked all around the house, in and out of the bedrooms and in her favourite beds in the living room and conservatory. I watched them, and could clearly see their minds working. Trying to work out why she wasn’t *here* or *there*. And since then, they’ve both become quieter. Not quite so ‘young rascals’. It’s as if they’ve grown up.

The dog too, noticed that she wasn’t there.
It’s the strangest thing to watch happen. I wish I could explain it to them. Particularly the cats.

Thanks for coming Kathy. It’s such a huge heart warming thing to see you here. Bless you.
      Sending love ~ Cobs. x

  2. So sorry about your cat, I was the same when we had ours put to sleep a few years ago. On a lighter note I will never look at muesli or tippex without a massive grin on my face now! Your foundation brush is very posh, I’m rubbish at make up so I just use BB cream on my face. Have a lovely weekend x x

    1. Hello Mrs.C. Great to see you.
Thank you for your kind words regarding the loss of my pusscat. As you and I know, having a pet of any description means that more than likely, the owner will have to say goodbye to them one day.
I’m so sorry for your own loss. It’s such a difficult thing to live through.

The jokes: Ahh, the Tippex one is a favourite. So simple but it hits the spot perfectly. Even though I know it, when I think of it, it makes me chuckle every time.
The joke which keeps on giving. lol ~ Cobs. x x x

  4. Been there too many times. Why do we get so attached to our fur friends, or feather friends for that matter. It leaves another hole to fill .My last one was Tobie. Cutest Welsh Corgie. She was so full of life and loved to go out in the pasture with farmer to check waterlines. She could always find the tiny pin pricks. She also loved to dig to china in the garden and that did her in. Blastomycosis (sp) Large lumps all over her body and started going blind. Heartbreaking day when we had to put her to sleep. Then farmer brought home Babe…..but that is another story . Love that you are learning so much so you can learn us. Do have a good weekend. xoxo

    1. Hello beautiful Beverly.
Tobie sounds like a really great four legged friend. I haven’t heard of that illness before. I shall look it up and learn.

Although I know that I will at some point lose my fur babies, I truthfully couldn’t be without at least one dog. I love my cats, but if I was only allowed one fur baby, it would be a dog. A dog makes a dog shaped hole in your heart, and it’s one that cannot be filled by any other animal. I lost my eldest dog 2 years ago, and I never thought that the deep pain and anguish from having him die in my arms would ever release me. But … we all know that time will help to move you forward and from somewhere comes the strength to keep on keeping on.

Sending you my love Beverly. You are always in my thoughts, and also in my prayers. God Bless sweet friend. ~ Cobs. x

  5. I’m sorry, I just skipped down to the comments. First off about the truck with the forward camera! That rocks!!!!!
The other is about your cat, 22 is a mile stone for kitties. The usual for kitties is around 17 – 18 nowadays. I have one 12 and two brother, cats from hell, that are 6 soon to be 7. I got the brothers when I got diagnosed with cancer in 2010 and because they were black I took both of them.
Know in your heart that you probably did hear her, she was coming to tell you she is okay 😉 It is one of the hardest things we as pet owners have to do. I lost my little Boston terrier girl this past October at the age of 12 and I still see her sometimes. I do miss her so, every day. I still have her cousin that will be 13 next week!! Stan is doing amazing for having only one eye and the other is cataract city, nearly blind and going deaf. He is happy and relatively healthy. Most of us have experienced the passing of a beloved pet and it’s tough. Know I am thinking of you and Mr. C
    Blessings to you.

    1. Hello Soozy.
Bless your heart and thank you for your beautiful comment.

I’m sad to hear of your own heart losses of the four legged variety, and agree, it really is the hardest thing pet owners are faced with, when an animal comes to that time in life when their quality of life is such that they are no longer able to care for themselves and the light in their eyes has faded.
Doesn’t make the decision easier, but we know that the decision has to be made, and for the right reasons.

So happy that you have Stan, and even fighting his own problems, he’s doing amazingly well. Bless his darling little heart.

Thanks for coming Soozy. I love seeing your name pop up here.
Sending you love, and a squidge for Stan. ~ Cobs. x

  6. Hi, so now I have access to my proper keyboard. I am so sorry to hear about your beloved cat. It’s a horrid thing to go through especially when you have known them for so long. Yesterday I said to you to treat it like a bereavement. Some people feel they shouldn’t mourn the loss of a pet, or be upset, but why? There is no point in having a pet unless you are going to love them. So don’t feel bad if you have a bit of a wobble sometimes, is basically what I am trying to say.
Now, I think I need to get myself one of those brushes – they sound amazing! I am always hoping for miracles in the makeup department.
Also, I think this was my most favourite batch of jokes so far – they really made me laugh out loud when I read them yesterday!
    Take care of yourself. Xx
P.S. I haven’t posted the card you did for my mum on my blog yet because my photos came out really rubbish. I am therefore waiting until I go back to see her again and will take some hopefully better ones then!

    1. Oh Puff, see … this is why I love you so much. You get *it*.
Squeaky Bunny was such a huge part of my life for 22 years, that we had become like two peas. We understood each other.
I knew a few weeks ago that she was no longer enjoying life. Her cat alzheimers had got worse about 7 months ago and so I wouldn’t allow her out the front of the house, and, since she could no longer climb the fences to roam, I knew that she would be safe from harm in our garden. But over the last three/four weeks she was asking and asking to go out of the front door, and I somehow knew that if I let her then it would be because she wanted to try to find a quiet place to her life to a close, … and that’s when I realised that I was keeping her with us for the wrong reasons. She’d had enough. She was tired and slept all day and all night, only getting up to eat, drink and use the litter tray we’d set up in the house. Once she was done doing any of those things, she slowly made her way back to her bed and went back to sleep again. Each day was exactly the same. I feared getting out of bed in the morning in case she’d died during the night.

When at the vets, I sobbed so much that I couldn’t get my words out. The staff were so lovely there, so kind and understanding.

I know in my head and heart that it was the right decision, but I’ll miss her forever more.

I’m so glad you liked the jokes. I plucked out a few which are kind of quick one liners – much in the style of Tim Vine. (So much so that Mr. Cobs said I’d stolen Tim Vines joke book! lol).

Don’t fret about the card for your mum. I have no worries about it. I just wanted to make your mum smile.

      1. Yes, lovely Cobs, I get it completely. You did do the right thing, and we always worry about the timing. But as long as they aren’t in pain, there doesn’t seem any harm to me in keeping them around a little longer, so you shouldn’t worry about that. We do it with people, after all. Also then we have a chance to prepare ourselves, a bit. Of course you will miss her. I still miss all mine that are no longer here. I’d love to be able to say something truly comforting, but the best I can come up with right now is that, sometimes, being a grown up really sucks… Puff Xx

  7. Hello my little crafter buddy? I’m sorry your little crafter feline has had to take her wings and fly, but you know she will always be there with you just now she can look down and guide you past all those difficult blank times, she also knew and appreciated all the love and care you gave her. I understand that it takes a long long time if ever to stop that awful void that happens but I always appeased myself with the fact that they are now back to being, happy little chappies contented in the knowledge that they were truly loved whilst here. I look forward to your new creations, and I will look carefully for the angel dust that I am sure will be sprinkled somewhere in that creation. Big Hugs x

    1. Thank you Kim. I’d like to think that my Mum met her and that she’s now happily sat on my Mums lap, with all of the dogs I’ve ever belonged to, sat and lay around like a carpet, and other cats sat looking out at what’s going on. Particularly one other cat, (another rescue pusscat), I didn’t have him for long – he sadly met with a road accident involving a car, but who totally won my heart, Jacob Cracker Cat. (just ‘Cracker’ for short). Who I know will be sat at my Mums feet, and everywhere she goes, he will go. He was a confused cat who thought he was the best dog ever, who accompanied me everywhere I went. Even when having a bath. He would climb up and sit on the corner of the bath, and then, when I relaxed back, he would tiptoe expertly along the thin rim of the bath to come and sit at my head and purr. Bless his beautiful, beautiful heart.

Thank you for your lovely comment Kim.
I shall share my makes … I’m not sure if there’s any Angel Dust visible in them … but who knows. Angel Dust has that way of showing up when you never even thought about it. lol.

  9. Oh I am so sorry *big hugs*
Pet bereavement is such a hard thing, especially when she’d been a part of your life for so long. It sounds as if she had a wonderful time being your cat and enriched your life too by the love she brought.
Second apology…my wretched laptop didn’t send my original comment which should have reached you on Friday, as I always look forward to your Friday posts and wouldn’t dream of missing them. I’ve decided I have electricity demons as my phone has been playing up as well *whispers* I really want an Iphone…
I remember being very surprised to see a washing machine made by Samsung, and although the make up brush sounds fab, I don’t really use make up…the cats have more interest in it than I, by which I mean eyeshadows, pushed to the floor to amke a satisfying spill of colour which can then be walked in…eyeliners, carefully posted down the toilet or chewed beyond repair..well, you get the picture!
As always, a lovely post, thank you, and I think the fluff jokes have to be my favourite this week! Lots of love to you 🙂 xx

Tapping a text message can be enough to fry my brain sometimes when I have to continually correct mistakes after I’ve tried tapping one key on the miniscule keyboard, and instead of one, I’ve tapped a variety – all of them wrong! grrr.LOL

Thank you for your lovely words regarding my cat. She indeed was a blessing.

Thrilled you liked the jokes this week. They were some of my favourites too.
      Wishing you a wonderful week.
