What I Learned This Week

Hello!!  Aw it’s lovely to see you, thanks so much for coming for a visit.  Coffee?  Tea?  Help yourself to biscuits (that’s ‘cookies’ for my USA friends).

Well . . .   I’ll start with my confession …  I was a very naughty girl one evening this week … I ate a bar of Fry’s Chocolate Cream.  All to myself, and I didn’t share any of it either.  I’m presuming that you know what a Fry’s Chocolate Cream is?  I know they do sell them in the USA, and various other places around the globe.  But … just in case, here’s a photo of one:

frys

… As I was eating this bar I became aware of my puzzler working overtime.  I recalled that Fry’s Chocolate Cream came in other flavours too, which I hadn’t realised had disappeared from the shelves here in the UK.  Orange – which I was a little indifferent about anyway, but it would be rather nice to taste it again now that I’ve grown up (well, in body but my mind …  aw lets’ not go there eh?),  and PEPPERMINT!  Oooo now that one was rather a treat.

My mum used to have a Fry’s bar once a week.  Normally towards the weekend.  She only ever allowed herself one and sometimes, if I’d been an especially good girl, she would share a piece with me.  And this is how I came to love them too.  My mum was brilliant about it though.  She could make a bar of this last her for days on end!  Always a mystery to me, how on earth she did this.  lol

frys-selection

However, in this looking back at Fry’s, suddenly came a quiet little voice saying … “oy, over here…..  look over here!”  And there, in a little dusty corner of my mind, was another Fry’s Chocolate Cream bar…

frys-five-centreAnyone remember the 5 different flavours of the 5 Centre bar?  It wasn’t a particular favourite of mine.  All the different centres in one bar, all bunched up against each other,  aw it made it just wrong somehow.  If I was given one of these though … it would last me for days, as I could only eat one section and then had to leave it for hours and hours, until I could face another section.  lol. So, a great dietary aid when I come to think of it.

This then sent me on a trip down Chocolate Memory Lane …  GALAXY COUNTERS….  anyone remember those?  For what reason they stopped making those is lost in time, but they were just fabulous.  You can still get them I understand, but only in packets of Revels.  I liked Galaxy Counters because you could let them sit on your tongue, and slowly melt away into gorgeousness.  Mmmmmm.  Galaxy chocolate is such lovely, smooth stuff.

Anyone else remember when Matchmakers came in their original box?

matchmakers-original

I somehow liked them more in their original box than in the double sized boxes they come in today.  They seemed more of a treat in the slim box.

Anyone remember the Cadbury’s Milk Tray Bar?  The box of chocolates only in a bar?

milktray1

So that you can be reminded what was inside this amazing bar of chocolates ….

milktray2

Funny thing is ... I don’t remember Coconut being spelt like it is on that wrap?!  I do wonder why they stopped making that bar as it seemed to be so popular.

And … finally ... Mackintosh’s Mint Cracknel.  Oh you HAVE to remember Mint Cracknel!  Although I liked it I had a fear of it.  Let me remind you of what it looked like:

mint-cracknell

Remember it now?  I was terrified that one of those shards of mint cracknel would get into my throat,  puncture my throat and then I’d die a strange minty perfumed death, and no one would know why because the minute those minty shards got wet (from the saliva in your mouth) they totally melted away to nothing and left a fabulous minty taste in your mouth.  But … boy they scurred me! lol

OK.. moving along now.  May I just take this moment to give the world a weather reminder:

January brings the snow;
Makes our feet and fingers glow.
February brings the rain,
Thaws the frozen ponds again.
March brings breezes, loud and shrill,
Stirs the dancing daffodil.
~~~ 🌹 ~~~
…….
STIRS the dancing daffodilS-T-I-R-S  .. Stirs the dancing daffodil.  It doesn’t say  KNOCK SEVEN SORTS OF you know what OUT OF MY DAFFODILS!!!
Madam Weather … kindly remember what you’re supposed to be doing at this time of the year and STOP MAKING UP YOUR OWN RULES!  My garden looks like a sodden graveyard of daffodils which have been slayed by some sort of monster who doesn’t leave visible footprints, but instead branches blown off trees, a ton of dried up leaves all congregated at my door, trying to block my entry into my own home and a howling gale mixed with buckets of rain when I get out of the car, which leaves my time this morning of primping and curling my hair a TOTAL WASTE OF TIME!  [stamps foot]
. . .
So just stop it weather, and follow the instructions in the poem!  OK?!!!  Ok!
. . .
So … let’s get onto what I learnt this week….
. . . .
This week I learned that there are approximately  5,000 species of mammals alive in the world, today.
I learnt that the difference between a Mammal and an Animal is that a Mammal can feed its young by producing its own milk.  This also applies to Monotremes, such as the Duck-billed Platypus, which lays eggs and produces milk – and therefore it’s the only animal that can make its own custard.
. . . . .  [. . . .  waits for the penny to drop . . . .  waits a little longer while the reader reads that last sentence again so that is dislodges that penny and …  ohhhh there you go!  There’s the laugh!].  Moving swiftly on  . . .
I learned that performing daily chores can use up more calories than winning gold medals.  Yes seriously.
Usain Bolt needed to run for a total of just under 30 seconds over three rounds to secure his Olympic title, shedding less than 30 kcal (though this does not include calories burned during training or after the race, when athletes’ metabolic rates ramp up). You lose more than that sitting through a 15-minute meeting.
I also learned that extremely sensitive hearing is called ‘hyperacusis’. Sufferers can find normal levels of sound intolerably loud.
Mr.Cobs would (if I ever took the time to breathe in when I’m talking) take the opportunity to tell you that I suffer with this.  Which is possibly correct, for I do have sensitive hearing.  However I would also remind himself that he talks way too loud and that’s why I’m forever saying  “Will you stop shouting.  I’m sat arms length from you!” …. at which point he lowers his voice …. and then ….. (get this) … he then repeats what he said in a quieter voice, in case I didn’t HEAR  IT  THE  FIRST  TIME  WHEN  HE  WAS  SHOUTING  IT!. Why is this?  Why?  ..  [shakes head and pulls her puzzlement face in bewilderment]
I kid ye not reader.  He really, honestly, truly, cross my heart, really does do this.
OOOhh… nearly forgot this one…  I learned:-  The most difficult tongue-twister in English is  ‘pad kid poured curd pulled cod.  Go on … give it a few goes.  It really is a tongue-twister  –  even when you’ve got it written down in front of you.  I could only say it when I read it quite slowish.  I managed it once, then tried to get faster and it all fell to pieces. lol.
Well now look …  I’ve talked and talked and kept you reading when all you wanted to do was dive into some funnies …  so, because you know I love you dearly, I shall finish imparting my wisdom and instead turn my hand to making you laugh and/or smile.  Ready?  OK.. let’s go!
A friend told me this joke this week:
Q: Is Google male or female? ….   A: Female, because it doesn’t let you finish a sentence before making a suggestion.  BUT … I answered back that no, it was male, because it thought it knew better than you so tried to rush you on because you’d interrupted his game playing on the X-Box.
~~~~~~~

Q:  Why do hamburgers go to the gym?  . . . . A:  To get better buns!

. . . . I have a stepladder. I never knew my real ladder.

. . . .
Q: Who cares if you pee in the shower?
A:  The bride and all her guests, apparently
. . . .
Q. What did the elephant say to the naked man?
A.  “How do you breathe through something so small?”
. . . .
 Q: What type of sandals do frogs wear?
A:  Open-toad!
. . . .
Why do seagulls fly over the sea?

Because if they flew over the bay, they would be called bagels

. . . .and finally ….
. . . . If tomatoes are a fruit,  – then (in that case) isn’t Ketchup a smoothie?
. . . .
We made it to the end of the first week in March, despite the weather trying to stop us!   It’s been pretty cold here in the UK, and I’m hoping that the weather improves a tad as we move into next week. I’m not asking for unseasonal temperatures, just weather which makes working in the garden a possibility.
. . . .
What about you in your corner of the world?  What’s the weather doing there where you are?
. . . .
Despite the weather, it’s been a nice week and I’ve quite enjoyed being in the house with Mr.Cobs, doing nothing in particular.
. . . .
But do tell me what you’ve been up to this week.  I’d love to hear about what’s going on in your world.
. . . .
In the meantime … I send you my best wishes and hope that your weekend is peace filled, warm and happy.  May contentment find you, and may you recognise it as a friend.  For where you have contentment, everything else will just fall into place and life will be good.
. . . .

Have a blessed rest of your day,  followed by a truly blessed weekend.

Author: The Art of Cobwebs - aka:- thecobweboriumemporium

Hello. I'm 'Cobwebs'. I live in a wee little cottage in the South of England, aptly called Cobweb Cottage. This little dwelling really is a cobweb factory. Not inside (well, occasionally) - but outside - flipping heck! This information should give you a clue as to why my blog is called The Art of Cobwebs aka: The Cobweborium Emporium. I've been arty and crafty from a very young age, and although my crafts have sometimes turned a corner and taken me in another direction, I've always crafted in some way, shape or form. One day, in the blink of an eye, life changed somewhat for me and the consequences were many. I had to find a new way of being 'artistic'. Card making; scrap-booking; producing ATC's and ACEO's; needle felting; Polymer clay; painting- but in a more relaxed style than I had before, and sewing, - are all things which I visit, as and when life allows. I've fairy recently become a Textile Artist and am enjoying this new creative outlet very much as it offers me so much scope for letting my imagination run through a grassy field and feel the wind in my hair - (mentally, of course). I love to create. To make things. I truthfully believe that the best gifts in the world are those in which you've given your time, rather than your cash. Thank you so much for visiting. Please visit my blog (link below) and have a look around. I'm sure you'll find something to enjoy, even if it's only a handful of jokes! (yes, seriously - there really are jokes!) Wishing you a truly blessed rest of your day! ~ Cobs. <3

  1. All that chocolate, oh my word. I only knew about the Fry’s chocolate in three flavours and the matchmakers but I’ve never seen the tiny boxes. I’ve never seen the rest of the chocolates! The jokes, oh my word! The man and the elephant 😂😂😂 This week I’ve been brave and sorted the baby things for my friend. It was a bit emotional! All done now and my house is a bit tidier. Have a lovely weekend x x

    1. Hello Mrs.C. ~ lovely to see you, on this fine, wet and rainy Friday morning. At least, it’s wet and rainy here where I am in my corner. :/

      Just so you know … I didn’t eat all that chocolate this week. I only ate one Fry’s Chocolate Cream (and happy to admit it. lol) but the eating of it took me on a journey of remembering chocolate from my childhood which I realised that I hadn’t seen and hadn’t noticed that they’d gone missing from sweety shops.

      Well done on the sorting out of your baby things. It must have been heart wrenching as you were going through them, but once you’d given them to your friend, I should imagine that the feeling was then one of a much brighter and lighter heart and home.

      Parting with things is a difficult thing to do, but keeping some things can hold us in the past, and almost stops us moving forward. I know when I gave away all of the baby equipment, when I came home I felt so different. My whole ‘being’ felt like it was in a new begining. Marvellous and quite extraordinary feeling.

      Ahh, the jokes, and that one about the elephant .. I did wonder about including that one for it’s kind of a teeny bit rascally. But I went with the reality that it made my chuckle muscle giggle which turned into laughing like a drain! … so I went with it. LOL

      1. Thank you, I’m hoping that the getting rid of the baby things will result in a clean cupboard and a clear mind. They haven’t gone to their new home yet but it won’t be long! X x

          You’re doing great. You deserve a pat on the back and a huggle.

          In fact … I’m finding you so inspiring that I’m thinking of taking on some of the things you’ve shared with us all. I shall reply in your blog post and tell you more. 😉

  2. Good morning! No…Fry’s Chocolate Yuk I’m afraid…why would you want to spoil nice chocolate by putting things in it…I do know it was a Quaker family that made it though! I vaguely remember the chocolates in a bar, but I DEFINITELY remember the Galaxy counters..I used to love those, and now you can only get them in Revels, which is basically chocolate Russian roulette..
    I’m with you on the sensitive hearing too…didn’t know it was called that! Your jokes LOL “open toad” LOL!!!
    Thank you for the laughs to start the day!
    Lots of love xx

    1. Hello Samantha, Good Morning to you too!

      I didn’t know that about Fry’s Chocolate Cream – a Quaker family made it!! See, all this sharing of our little grey cells makes us all the more clever, especially when it’s about the important things in life, such as chocolate! lol.

      You have sensitive hearing too? Aw you know the feeling of how ‘too loud’ can make you feel then. I was kind of glad to learn that it had a name, because that meant that it wasn’t just me in this alone, and it wasn’t me being picky and silly about sound or noises.

      Revels: “Chocolate Rusian roulette” … I laughed loud and proud. I also read it out to Mr.Cobs and he laughed and did tha sniggering puff down his nose while his throat made a laughing grunt noise. LOL (I reckon that in his genetic make up there is a pig somewhere, beause he does that snorting noise far too well. lol)

      Thank you so much for coming to visit Samantha. I love sharing a laugh and having a chat with you.

  3. Lovely post Cobs. I have always loved aeros. You know the minty ones. I have to ‘fess up and say I wouldn’t share them with anyone!!! lol! Great jokes. Glorious day in the mountains today although heavy rain is forecast tonight and tomorrow. Spring is springing though.
    Have a wonderful weekend.
    Hugs Flo x

    1. Yes, mint Aeros are lovely, I agree. I tried the Aero Bubbles – those things which look like a Malteser. Big round chocolate balls in bag. But I was sorely disappointed. I bit into one … and felt instantly cheated! I could taste and smell the mint but .. where I expected those fabulous green bubbles to be … it was just brown chocolate bubbles. I felt so cheated that they’d not bothered to do things properly. I need those green bubbles to make me feel good! Put me off those for good. :/ But like the mint bars … they don’t cheat with those. They make them properly, with green bubbles. lol 😀

      We have rain here today Flo, so maybe it’s heading your way once it’s finished drenching us.
      Don’t get wet .. stay home and enjoy a mint Aero, with green bubbles of course!

    1. Hello lovely Ruthie.
      You make the day shine by just being there.

      Ahhh, I felt that there would be chocolate lovers who would like to go a little way back in time to our childhood and look back at some of the things we used to drool over in the sweet shop. Mint … yes. Makes me weak at the knees …. and what’s more … I think it ought to be made a WORLD WIDE LAW that after every meal, each diner should be offered two After Eight Mints.

      How is a body meant to enjoy an after meal coffee without a couple of After Eight Mints to nibble on? tsk tsk.

      I shall enjoy the beautiful Florida Sunshine that you have brought with you. I’m going to lay back and think of England and see if I can encourage the weather to STOP RAINING and get on with becoming spring.

      Wishing you a fabulous weekend, filled with love and smiles.

  5. Hello good morning from Seattle.. Beautiful post.. I have never tried all those chocolates that you mentioned.. Now my list of chocolates to try has increased.. The weather here has been unpredictable.. Rains, snow and sun.. Sometimes all three in a day..
    I loved all the jokes especially the elephant and man one…

    1. Hello Lochan, fabulous to see you!

      Oh yes, you really must try the Frys Chocolate Cream – and if you’re into mint, then buy that one. It’s smooth and beautiful. Have a little chunk with some coffee. The flavour will POP in your mouth and compliment the coffee.

      Yes, unpredictable is perhaps the best way to describe what we have going on here. Unpredictable which is on a 5 minute delay. One weather for the first five minutes, then a different weather for the next, and then different for the next … and so on (and on and on)

      Thrilled you liked the jokes. You’ll have to commit one to memory and share the smiles. lol
      Have a truly blessed weekend my friend. ~ Cobs. 🙂

  6. I remember all of the chocolates you mentioned apart from the five flavours of the chocolate cream. I was never much of a fan of fondant though, so the Chocolate Cream bar was really my fall-back position, if no other chocolate was available.

    BUT GALAXY COUNTERS ARE STILL AVAILABLE ON THEIR OWN!! I had a little rant about them myself last year sometime. They are only in big packs, but it is all Counters, none of that horrid Revels stuff. You are welcome!!

    I had forgotten about that bar that was all different chocolates – that was a genius product, wasn’t it? Do you remember Ice Breaker? Or an Aztec bar?
    Good jokes – made me laugh! I have a mental image of a platypus trying to make custard with their tiny little legs….

    Liked by 1 person

    1. [smiling big time here] Platypus making custard. I’m glad you got it. lol Such funny little animals …. erm, Monotremes. (Let’s get it right now Cobs!)

      Galaxy Counters … AVAILABLE IN BIG PACKS?? I haven’t seen them!!! I shall have to go on a search and discover mission and find those babies. A bag of those has my name on it. Thank you my favourite Puff of all time!

      Ice Breaker … Ohhhh YES I remember it now you mention it.
      Aztec Bar … I LOVED LOVED LOVED those. They were priced just right so that I could buy one of those for myself, along with my magazine, and spend a very happy Saturday evening of quiet selfishness time all by myself, having a good old read and eating half an Aztec bar. (I saved the other half for the next day to torment my brother with. LOL)

      I remembered another one after I’d sent the post to be published … BAR SIX made by Cadbury’s. It was a little bit like a Kit Kat, but it was more, …. plumptious, somehow. Again, another one which was easy to have a little of and save the rest.

      But … my all time, absolute, without a doubt favourite from my childhood was …. Spanish Gold.

      It was meant to look like tobacco – Pirates Tobacco. But what it was in reality was thin strips of coconut which was coated in some sort of orange sugary stuff and it was the best thing in my whole childhood life.

      Wrapped in a waxy sort of thick paper. No sellotape, no glue. It just folded into an oblong shape and kept itself closed. I think it’s still made, but I’ve not actually seen this anywhere to buy it.

      The chocolates bar … an absolutely brilliant idea. I have no idea why on earth they stopped making that. It was a winner then, and if they brought it back now, it would be a winner all over again. (Although I’d get rid of that Lime Cordial – that was one of those things which made me suck my cheeks in and twist my body as if I was having a convulsion! Soooooooo tart!

      Glad you liked the jokes. Nothing like a mental giggle on a Friday. It sets up the weekend well.

      Hows your mum?
      Are you OK? You’re running around doing everything and I’m concerned that you’re burning your candle from both ends. Don’t do too much Mrs. You’re not Super-Woman. I have that costume this week, it’s my turn.

      1. Yep, I remember the Bar 6, although was never much of a wafer fan. I only got to like a KitKat in the last few years, and only if they are chilled first. Now, Spanish Gold.. I really don’t know about that one…I remember a chocolate bar that had a rum flavour perhaps. But now it has just come to me that it might have been called ‘Old Jamaica’? Amazing what you can drag from the depths of memories with a little prompt! Also, another flashback – WEEKEND chocolate box. Your mention of lime made me think of it. The chocolates were so colourful! Might be worth trying to recreate in paper and card?! And thanks for your concern – Mum is great and feeling much better. Bones are doing well! I am fine, just busier, so not quite on top of everything. Which translates as ‘even more behind’ really…Ah well, It’ll come good! Have a great weekend! Puff Xx

        1. Hello Puff. Happy Saturday.
          Ah, Old Jamaica. They still make it. How do I know this? Because Mr. Cobs will, not often but once every couple of years, partake of it. He loved it before we got married, and I used to buy it once or twice a month after we married. But he got tired of it. However, we found it again in Tesco or Sainsbury, I forget which, and he popped a bar into the trolley for old times sake. LOL. He’s not really a chocolate eater (how I came to marry someone like this is beyond my understanding!) … but put pies, flans, pastries and general savouries in front of him and he’ll go crazy and eat the lot.

          Weekend Chocolate Box… I have to admit that I didn’t think I’d heard of that, so I googled … YES! I remember those now. I can’t ever remember eating them though, so not sure that we ever had them in the house when I was a young thing. But I certainly remember the box and the adverts.

          You’re right … it could make a great card, especially so for someone of the right age who will remember them. A GREAT blast from the past.

          Glad to hear that Mum is on the mend. It will be a long journey, but if she can keep her spirits up time will pass quicker.

          Good to hear that you’re ok. Being behind is my whole way of life. You get used to is and then it just feels like ‘normal’.
          Sending oodles of love and squidgey stuff. Have a peaceful weekend, but not a shabby one. 😀 ~ Cobs. x

  7. Chocolate!!! Yummy, chocolate fixes everything! I have never tried Fry’s bars, I will look for them in the English section of our local shops, maybe I will find them. Most places have a section now with all kinds of the ol’ English treats and other foods.
    We have another weather warning with the words, snow attached to them. Not liking that, I have a card class bright and early in the morning and I do so want to get there in one piece or I won’t go. We have had some weird weather here in Victoria, flurries that stuck to the ground and made traveling impossible for a couple hours. Traffic was snarled and accidents on every corner. It came down fast and furious, so I do hope that this won’t be another morning like that one was.
    All the daffodils and other spring time flowers are popping out but then they get snow on them. Mine have recovered now and that is another reason why I don’t want snow any more. Too many little flowers just couldn’t survive another storm.
    I am hoping for the old saying to be true, March, in like a lion, out like a lamb, and for April to not bring too many spring showers onto the earth that just can’t hold anymore water.
    Thanks for the giggles over coffee and a biscuit. 🙂

    1. Hello Soozy.
      I’m wondering if I’ve just made women of the world all fall off their diets. LOL.
      But … you’re right. Chocolate somehow does fix some things. Not necessarily long term, but it does give some relief at the time you need it.

      Your weather sounds awful! Crumbs, I thought ours was bad, but yours has a life of it’s own and a wish to get on the top spot of the ‘dangerous to man,woman and child’ list! Please be safe out there Soozy. I don’t want to hear that you’ve been in an accident because of the weather.

      Currently, here in the South of the UK, it’s raining cats and dogs as I’m sat here typing.
      When I came home at around 6.15pm tonight, my headlights caught the site of what should have been happy bobbing heads of Daffodils. They were all laying on the floor, in the mud, bent over and broken. Such a sad sight. I wanted to rush to them and stand them up, the using sticks and string to support them. Then, since I’m a crafter, I feel the need to make little umbrellas, out of clear polythene so that the light can get through, so that the rain won’t hurt their little heads.

      Lets hope that you’re right. March, in like a lion and out like a lamb. If it doesn’t take note of that, I’ll kick it’s rear end and send it out like I’m the boss. (yeah, like that’s going to happen. I can’t control my hair so I have no hope of controlling the weather). LOL

      Thanks for visiting Soozy. I love having a chat over coffee. Great seeing you.
      Take care out there! ~ Cobs. x

          Well, if you turn rusty, then we shall be Rusty ol’ birds together and creak and groan as we walk along.

          However .. I know where Cobs the Bogeyman hides his oil can … so I can oil all your creaky joints so that you won’t creak by Monday, ready for the school walk! 😀
          (no amount of oil stops me from creaking anymore, but I’m fine about that. It lets people know I’m coming, so they put the kettle on. lol)

  9. Hi Cobs! I remember every single one of those chocolates, but my favourite was coffee matchmakers, and the Cadbury’s milk bar, a real real treat on a Friday! Your daffodils must be soooo much braver than mine, as we only have green stems at the moment here in wind swept Essex! Maybe they are just wiser and are refusing to come out until Mrs Sunshine comes calling! Great to have a cuppa and a chat x

    1. I don’t remember Coffee Matchmakers! Ooo they obviously slipped right by me and I missed ’em!

      Your daffodils are very wise to keep their blooms hidden. If you get this rain we’re currently getting, tell them to keep hidden for another couple of weeks, otherwise they’ll end up on the floor.

      Great seeing you Kim. Thank you so much for coming. It’s wonderful chatting with you.

      No, sadly, at the moment, you don’t have much access to the chocolates here in the UK, but I feel a change happening, as I’m told that there are now some English aisles in your supermarkets there, so with a bit of luck maybe you’ll be able to buy a bar of Galaxy Chocolate there, or maybe some Minstrels – discs of chocolate which gets thicker the close to the middle it gets, – covered in that same sort of shell which you find around Smarties (ah… not sure if you get those either! eek), and they’re all chocolate coloured shells – not multi coloured.

      Or possibly a Frys Chocolate Creme even!

      Thrilled you like the jokes, and so nice to meet you!
      Have a blessed rest of your day. ~ Cobs. x
