It’s a Blizzard out there!

Hello, and a Happy Wednesday to you!  Although mind … saying that doesn’t give this Wednesday the importance it deserves, does it.  December 21st is the 355th day of the year OR … in THIS year, it’s the 356th  – for this years is a leap year!  There are exactly 10 days remaining until the end of the year.

In the Northern Hemisphere, December 21st is usually the shortest day of the year and is sometimes regarded as the first day of winter (the December solstice is on either December 20, 21, 22 or 23).  In the Southern Hemisphere, December 21st is usually the longest day of the year and occurs during the southern summer.

And..  did you know that this date is slightly more likely to fall on a Monday, Wednesday or Friday than on Saturday or Sunday, and slightly less likely to occur on a Tuesday or Thursday.

  • Born on this day (in) among many others:
  • 1118 – Thomas Becket, English archbishop and saint (d. 1170)
  • 1795 – Jack Russell, English priest, hunter, and dog breeder
  • 1804 – Benjamin Disraeli, English lawyer and politician, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom
  • 1937 – Jane Fonda, American actress
  • 1940 – Frank Zappa, American singer-songwriter
  • 1948 – Samuel L. Jackson, American actor

Anyhoo . . .  I’ve bought another Christmas Card to the School ‘Show and Tell‘ this morning,  and this poor little tree is outside in an absolute blizzard!

Another Shaker Card – but this one doesn’t have the ‘streamers’ I ‘invented’ and showed you in the last shaker card I made, (which act as ‘stoppers’ – or ‘pauses’ – and slow down the flow of the sprinkles within the shaker).

Close up of the shaker card I shared last week, showing the ‘streamers’ idea I invented to slow down the fall of the sprinkles within the shaker.  You can find the blog post about this card —> HERE  <— click

In this card, on the suggestion of a lovely crafter (Kathy D),  I instead used a few glued down sequins to see if it would do the same trick as the streamers.

you can just about see a couple of the ‘glued in place’ sequins further up the tree, in this photo.

They didn’t do quite the same thing, but the card still retained a little twinkle and interest even though the majority of the sprinkles fell to the bottom of the tree.  And, since this tree is in a blizzard, a bit of ballast is perhaps needed to keep the poor thing upright and in one place! lol.

In the photographs the snowy paper comes over as a shade of purple, but in real life, it’s actually a lovely, warm grey colour.  The snow drift at the bottom of the card was simply hand cut from a piece of white card,  just using good old-fashioned scissors.

close-up-of-sprinkles

I always put a selection of sprinkly bits into a shaker card – a few regular sized sequins, teeny tiny cut out stars, flowers, hearts, hexagons, small cuts of mylar, and teeny tiny, miniscule little balls in various colours (amongst other things).  And although it looks like there’s a lot in that little Christmas tree – there’s actually only a small amount.  Just little pinches of your chosen things.  But I don’t recommend putting glitter in a shaker, as it sticks to the acetate and sometimes you can’t get it to budge, even if you tried to bribe it!

snowy-background-shaker-tree-2

  • The Snow paper was free in a selection, which came with a magazine.
  • As did the paper used within the shaker section.
  • The tree was cut out using a Die which came free with a magazine.
  • The white card snow drift was made using a scrap of card from my scraps drawer.
  • The Die Cut star(s) were made using a die which came free with a magazine.
  • The sentiment (Oh Christmas Tree) was stamped using a stamp which came free with a magazine.
  • The Die used to cut out the sentiment was cut using a Die which came free with  magazine earlier this year.

The ribbons – the glittery silver and the lavender twine, I always have in my stash.  I love ribbons – so always have a big selection simply because I can’t resist buying it.  The glittery ribbon looks as if it would be scratchy – but it’s really not. It’s soft, gentle and very pliable.

And finally .. the shaker bits – all come from my stash.  I have sequins which I’ve had for donkeys years and all the other things – different coloured mylar, hexagons, tiny stars, hearts, flowers, and the miniscule multi-coloured balls etc – are all things I’ve had for years.  As a crafter, we may only need a pinch of something, but we have to buy a whole bag of ‘it’ – so of course we’re left with amounts of some things which we have in storage.

My crafty ‘shaker bits’ are all kept in two large-sized, flowery metal pencil tins, and when you open the tins, it’s like the best box of twinkly magic ever invented.  Pots of this, packs of that.  Boxes of those, a packet of something amazing.  This shape, that shape, no real shape.  Flowers, stars, hearts, circles, hexagons, dots.  Silver, gold, green, blue, purple, red, white, iridescent, pink, bronze, black.  Every colour and every shape you can think of has its place in those tins.

Well…  this post began with me thinking that I’d keep it short.  [sigh]  Well that aim went by the by, didn’t it!  lol.

Let’s finish with a fewThings you might not know about Christmas shall we?

Norwegian scientists have hypothesized that Rudolph’s red nose is probably the result of a parasitic infection of his respiratory system.

I reckon those scientists have too many liquid lunches.

All the gifts in the Twelve Days of Christmas would equal 364 gifts.

The “true love” mentioned in the song “Twelve Days of Christmas” does not refer to a romantic couple, but the Catholic Church’s code for God. The person who receives the gifts represents someone who has accepted that code.

The world’s largest Christmas stocking measured 106 feet and 9 inches (32.56 m) long and 49 feet and 1 inch (14.97 m) wide. It weighed as much as five reindeer and held almost 1,000 presents. It was made by the Children’s Society in London on December 14, 2007.

Each year there are approximately 20,000 “rent-a-Santas” across the United States. “Rent-a-Santas” usually undergo seasonal training on how to maintain a jolly attitude under pressure from the public. They also receive practical advice, such as not accepting money from parents while children are looking and avoiding garlic, onions, or beans for lunch.

In Poland, spiders or spider webs are common Christmas trees decorations because according to legend, a spider wove a blanket for Baby Jesus. In fact, Polish people consider spiders to be symbols of goodness and prosperity at Christmas.

Alabama was the first state in the United States to officially recognize Christmas in 1836.  Oklahoma was the last U.S. state to declare Christmas a legal holiday, in 1907.

In Germany, ‘Heiligabend’, or Christmas Eve, is said to be a magical time when the pure in heart can hear animals talking.

During the Christmas season, nearly 28 sets of LEGO are sold every second.

Well, that should be enough to pepper your conversations with throughout the day, and make people think you’re massively intelligent.  (I mean … I know you are, but others need to be shown that fact!) 🙂

Have a wonderful Wednesday.  I hope that today glides along, and that no gremlins get into your day.  If they do … simply show them the door, open it, and send them out.

Author: The Art of Cobwebs - aka:- thecobweboriumemporium

Hello. I'm 'Cobwebs'. I live in a wee little cottage in the South of England, aptly called Cobweb Cottage. This little dwelling really is a cobweb factory. Not inside (well, occasionally) - but outside - flipping heck! This information should give you a clue as to why my blog is called The Art of Cobwebs aka: The Cobweborium Emporium. I've been arty and crafty from a very young age, and although my crafts have sometimes turned a corner and taken me in another direction, I've always crafted in some way, shape or form. One day, in the blink of an eye, life changed somewhat for me and the consequences were many. I had to find a new way of being 'artistic'. Card making; scrap-booking; producing ATC's and ACEO's; needle felting; Polymer clay; painting- but in a more relaxed style than I had before, and sewing, - are all things which I visit, as and when life allows. I've fairy recently become a Textile Artist and am enjoying this new creative outlet very much as it offers me so much scope for letting my imagination run through a grassy field and feel the wind in my hair - (mentally, of course). I love to create. To make things. I truthfully believe that the best gifts in the world are those in which you've given your time, rather than your cash. Thank you so much for visiting. Please visit my blog (link below) and have a look around. I'm sure you'll find something to enjoy, even if it's only a handful of jokes! (yes, seriously - there really are jokes!) Wishing you a truly blessed rest of your day! ~ Cobs. <3

    1. Hello Ruthie. 🙂 … and a very happy Wednesday to you too!
Aww bless your heart Ruthie. But I know exactly what you mean … I too have visited blogs (your included) and wished there was a ‘LOVE’ button.

So happy that you enjoyed this post.
Sending you hugs and Christmas wishes, and two on the cheeks kisses!

        1. See … this is the difference between me and an intelligent person. I sit here thinking ‘Why isn’t there a ‘LOVE’ button, and a clever, intelligent person says: “I’ll just start typing Love it on all the blogs”.
          😀

Life would be a lot easier if I only had a brain! 😉

          ❤ = love.

  1. Your shaker cards are really coming along. If you dust the “window” as in embossing buddy etc. will the glitter still stick? I haven’t tried shaker in case you are wondering. but I do have a new baby card that is awaiting the right shaker stuff. It will have to be baby pink, clear and white to be what I have in mind but the baby isn’t due till April so I have time to order. We are running out of time Miss Cob. Are you ready for THE day?

    1. Ahh, I’ve tried dusting the windows with anti static pad, and cornflour in a little cotton fabric made into a pad, and baby talc in a pad of cotton, … all of which I thought would work because they work on paper when embossing… but the powder left a film on the acetate and made it look slightly ‘white’ or like it was ghostly.

However, while I’ve been typing this I suddenly thought that I should try a dryer sheet … my brain is saying that it might leave a slight residue on the acetate. BUT … I’ll give it a go next time I make a shaker card and see what happens.

Am I ready for THE day?
Well, if that’s Christmas Day -Pretty much, yes. I need to buy a pomegranate, and I have my groceries on order for delivery tomorrow afternoon.

I do have some wrapping of gifts which I need to do. But … I think that I’m pretty much done.

A shaker card would make a brilliant new baby card, Beverly. What a GREAT idea! You must show us all the card when you’ve made it, as I’ve a feeling it’s going to be the show stopper of the Baby Card World!

      1. You have grocery delivery? How wonderful.I hate grocery shopping. Mostly because I buy for my parents too. While trying to get everything on her list I forget most of mine. LOL

        1. Sadly, yes. I have a grocery delivery. I order everything on-line and it’s delivered to me on the day I choose, within an hour time-slot. But it’s something I have to pay for – it’s not a free thing.
(There is a reason I have this).
Although it sounds rather decadent – it’s bloomin’ hard work when you’re trying to do it on the internet – and you can’t guarantee that you’ll get what you want, because sometimes they haven’t got an item in stock or they’ve sold out. You can choose to allow the ‘picker’ (the person who shops for you) to choose an alternative – and if you do that you can almost guarantee that you’ll get an upgrade in goods. But if there is no available alternative, then where you (and I if I were shopping in the store) would decide that you’ll have a different cheese – and perhaps ask for a sample at the deli counter so that you can try before you buy, shopping on-line doesn’t give you the option of that facility (obviously) so there are some down sides to it.

The chaps who deliver are just brilliant. They carry the goods from their chilled van (which has a freezer in it too), and they will even bring it into the house and unpack it onto your work tops for you.

It’s a brilliant facility for those who work long hours, or perhaps new mums who are trying to come to terms with a new baby in their life, the elderly, oh … all sorts of folks.
It’s very handy and such a blessing.

I remember the days of shopping for my own groceries, and for my mums, at the same time. So I do feel your pain. LOL.

          1. Do other countries have this ? Good grief…why don’t we? Because there are so many stupid people who wouldn’t be home, wouldn’t agree with their choice etc.
We are a hard to please bunch over here.

            1. I *think* you do have Online Grocery Shopping over there in the USA Beverly. I’ve had a quick look online and I saw names of stores and saw many names of areas in the US where the service is supplied, but because I’m not familiar with stores over there, I don’t know what’s great, good, ok or indifferent.
Do a Google search Beverly: “Online Grocery Shopping” and I bet it comes up with lots of places who do this. All you’ll have to do it choose the right one for you. You never know… you might find some that you can get the service free for your first delivery, or reduced rates.

You could then ‘shop around’ and find the one you like best.

Here in the UK I think all of our biggest grocery retailers now do this, and it’s becoming more and more popular with people. I think I read somewhere that 48% of people here now shop this way for their ‘big weekly shop’ – which I find hard to believe, but I’ve just asked Mr.Cobs how many people/families did he think shopped for their weekly big shop online, and he said about 50% – so maybe that 48% is about right.

Just in the little place where I live, I know I’ve seen the grocery delivery vans pop up and down the road here, and stop off at various homes, at various times of day, on a variety of days – so people really are making the best use of the service.

I’m totally certain that you can get this service Beverly. Ask Mr.Google.

Lovely to hear that you like the shaker cards you’ve received in the past. I can remember many years ago, sitting wondering on how on Earth they got all those twinkly bits inside that card! lol
And … like you … I too like the Polish spiders story.

  3. I would love to hear animals talking. This is a magical time of year when miracles have been known to happen. I believe in the magic of this time of year. I have experienced on occasion very “cool” things.
Love the card Cobs and your history lessons are always so very nice to read about. I love simple and I do love sparkle, this card has both. I really wish you a lovely day.

    1. Hello Soozyb.
I think that animals use body language. I can always tell what my cats and dog want, just by looking at how they’re holding themselves and their facial expressions. But yes, I agree with you that to actually be able to listen in and hear them with our own ears would be amazing.

Thrilled you like the card Soozy, and the post itself.

Wishing you a very happy Christmas time, and a New Year full of wonderment and promise.

  4. Hello, Cobs! I am glad that you tried my suggestion, I am sorry it did not quite work out as well as I had hoped for you. (Perhaps you and I use different thickness of foam or foam tape when we construct our shaker cards?)

Your card is beautiful, and I love all of the educational tidbits your provided about Christmas!

    Have a lovely day! Kathy

    1. Hello Kathy!
Might be the thickness of the tape, – or maybe I needed to glue more sequins etc, in place. But I’m glad you made the suggestion as it’s lovely to try things and see if they can be made to work. Sharing information and tips is what makes our crafty world go round and how we all get together and help each other, which is something I love.

Wishing you a very happy Christmas and a bright, peaceful New Year.

  5. Hello, another fun shaker cards. I learned the hard way about not putting glitter in shaker cards after repeatedly failing at them I gave up trying and then one day sussed out that if the glitter was the problem then maybe I shouldn’t be using glitter! lol. Lots of great facts about Christmas and it isn’t even Friday. Do you have enough left for your Friday post?!

Unfortunately, gremlins have crept in today but I’m determined to let it get me down. Happy Wednesday Cobs. Hx

I know I do not have Polish ancestry but I have the spider web thing down pat in my house. I swear they weave those things overnight in my home. I am liking the story about those….lots of goodness and prosperity!
I also did help out with the LEGO sales this year (as usual). I have a 32 year old son that always has them on his Christmas list. Definitely going to share some of this wisdom so I do look massively intelligent! (Already shared the birthday list with my husband.)

Your spiders are ensuring that the love and happiness continue in your home for they’re decorating with glee! lol. They obviously like you.

Lego … yes, we too have helped with Lego sales this year. Little Cobs loves the stuff, and Mr.Cobs says he’s building for the little chap, but I reckon that he’s actually building just because it makes him happy to play with the stuff.

You already are massively intelligent. You’re just going to prove it to everyone by quoting from the post. LOL
