Let’s Light up the Christmas Village

I’ve been finally making Christmas cards (did I hear someone say “about time too!” at the back there?!).  At the moment I seem to be having a love affair with white and most of the cards I’m making are, in the main, white.  Maybe with a touch of colour from a ribbon, or some such, but on the whole I’m loving the white, so I’m going with it because it’s the path of happiness – and, I’ll admit, ease, because ease is what I’m aiming for right now.

I’m here sharing the card which, inside my head, as I planned it out, I could see how easy it would be to do what I wanted to do.  The planning was easier than the making, for once I got to the making, cutting, piecing together, sitting back and thinking it out a bit more and trying again …  well, I’m willing to share with you that I left this all in a pile on my desk twice and walked off to do something else because I fell out with it – due mainly to my lack of patience I think. (And a die which took six passes through the machineI have no idea why because the second time I cut it out, it cut it out properly on the very first pass! doh!)

I know that looking at this first photograph, you’re perhaps wondering why I was having such a struggle with this card.  After all …  it’s just a fairly simple card, with a black silhouette of a village scene, and a couple of die cut ‘wreaths’ in white.  Ahh …  but it’s not…

christmas-silhouette-3

Getting any clues from this silhouette now?  (sorry about the fuzzy photo …  the camera didn’t want to focus on the village, it wanted to gaze longingly at the flame on the t.light, like some love struck nincompoop!)  Shall I give you a clue?  ….  ok …. look at the colour of the card, compared with the colour behind the (black) silhouette.

“Ahhhhh!”   . . .  I hear you say

OK … well this one will give it away ….

christmas-silhouette-4

The t-light is actually a battery operated t-light,  so safe to use with (or in this case inside) a card.

Made using a 7″x 7″ folded white card;  parchment (for behind the silhouette) and die cut wreaths which I overlayed, in different positions, and used one for the inside of the card also, in order to finish off the inside, around the parchment, in a decorative fashion.

If you look really carefully at the house on the top  ‘snow’ drift slope (over to your right as you’re looking at the photo above) you can see some ‘smoke’ coming out of the chimney pot!  Sadly, what you can’t see in any of the photo’s, even though I tried my very hardest, is the snow which I drew on the back of the parchment, which you can actually see even if the t-light isn’t lit.  It just wouldn’t make itself known to you in the photos.

christmas-silhouette-2
Taken with the t-light inside lit, and a desk lamp on, so that you could see it as you’d see it if it were on your shelf at home.

To be fair – I could have made this easier for myself to make, had I not wanted to die cut a wreath into the card itself, so making it able to see the light from the flickering t-light through a die cut wreath shape as well as a silhouette through the ‘picture’ window, and also wanting to use acetate to suspend the village scene in the window.   Yes … I really could have made this SO much easier on myself.  And believe you  me …. I’m going to on the next one, I’m telling you!

Well that’s me done and dusted for today.  All that’s left for me to say is:   Happy Monday.  May today bring you a cup filled with happiness,  with a few spoonfuls of joy, and as many dashes of love as you can fit into your hours.

Say something nice to someone today and make them smile.  I bet it will make you yourself smile more than you would believe.

Sending warm squidges to you in your corner from me in mine.

Hello. I'm 'Cobwebs'. I live in a wee little cottage in the South of England, aptly called Cobweb Cottage. This little dwelling really is a cobweb factory. Not inside (well, occasionally) - but outside - flipping heck! This information should give you a clue as to why my blog is called The Art of Cobwebs aka: The Cobweborium Emporium. I've been arty and crafty from a very young age, and although my crafts have sometimes turned a corner and taken me in another direction, I've always crafted in some way, shape or form. One day, in the blink of an eye, life changed somewhat for me and the consequences were many. I had to find a new way of being 'artistic'. Card making; scrap-booking; producing ATC's and ACEO's; needle felting; Polymer clay; painting- but in a more relaxed style than I had before, and sewing, - are all things which I visit, as and when life allows. I've fairy recently become a Textile Artist and am enjoying this new creative outlet very much as it offers me so much scope for letting my imagination run through a grassy field and feel the wind in my hair - (mentally, of course). I love to create. To make things. I truthfully believe that the best gifts in the world are those in which you've given your time, rather than your cash. Thank you so much for visiting. Please visit my blog (link below) and have a look around. I'm sure you'll find something to enjoy, even if it's only a handful of jokes! (yes, seriously - there really are jokes!) Wishing you a truly blessed rest of your day! ~ Cobs. <3

  1. Wow, gorgeous card and a great idea with the t light. Some cards are like that – you totally fall out with it and then when you come back to it it all falls into place. Hope you are starting to feel better. Hxx

    1. Hello Hannah!
Aw, thank you, my amazing artist friend! I’m thrilled you like it.
I’m relieved to hear that I’m not alone in this ‘falling out’ with cards. When I’d thought it out, inside my head it was all so simple. In the making somewhere, I felt as if I’d forgotten what I was planning and nothing was ticking along as easily as I’d originally thought it out. And yet . . . I was doing the very things I’d planned?! Go figure! Maybe the left side of my brain wasn’t chatting with the right side. I have no idea. I just know it had become a pain in the rear end, so I got out of my chair, stood over it and told it that I was going away from the craft room, so it had better jolly well think about what it was playing at and decide to behave before I got back.

In the end I think I just beat it into submission. LOL.

Thank you for your health wishes … yes, starting to feel better – it’s just a bit slower than I’d like. But at least it’s heading in the right directon.
Thank you so much for coming Hannah. It means the world to me.

    1. Oh, bless you, Kim. Thank you so much for your lovely comment.
You’re right, we have this great urge to follow the creative streak. In my case it’s because I’m trying to catch it. LOL.
God Bless, Kim. Thank you for coming and sharing a coffee. ~ Cobs. x

    1. Aww Jessica, you’ve tickled both me and Mr.Cobs, this morning. Bless your beautiful heart.

I’ve been making my cards for … [thinks…] …. oooo, y’know, I can’t actually remember when I began – but it was when daughter No.2 was still in her first school – and she’ll be thirty next year, so it’s longer than I care to remember since I still believe that I’m only 27 myself. LOLOLOL.

Buying your cards is still a great thing to do because it helps with the economy – so you’re helping your country to tick along financially by investing in goods. And that’s exactly what I tell Mr.Cobs I’m doing when I go and spend *more* money on crafty supplies. lol.

I’m thrilled you like the card. Thank you for coming and sharing a coffee with me, and for taking the time to leave me a message. Bless you.

    1. Hello Chicken!
Feeling… getting better. Still have the pain in my back (above the waist, on the right side), but it’s improving. The skin isn’t quite as sensitive and sore, so it’s definitely heading in the right direction.
Perhaps if I could just stay confined to the house and not go out, it might get better a bit quicker. But it’s Christmas, and I don’t need to explain to you what that means for you have a bigger family than mine, so I know you know. lol

Thrilled you like the card and so happy to see you here.

        1. I think so yes. There was no rash to be seen at all. Not even a spot.
But my GP made me promise to go back straight away if I lost any feeling in my feet/toes/legs or hands/arms. So far, everything is OK. So I’m keeping my fingers crossed that everything will continue to go in the right direction.

          Sending you love ❤ ~ Cobs. x

    1. Aw, thank you Puff. Thrilled you like it.
I would love to lie down … but there are more cards to make so I have to crack on with them.
I’ll have a lie down when they’re all made. By which time I’ll likely collapse with exhaustion. lol
      Have a great day! ~ Cobs. x

  4. Been there …done that . Can’t tell you how many time I have had an idea and when I go to find the supplies they look at me like I have lost my simple mind.( probably have on several occasions) The office supply went out of business in our little town and there was a time when they ran to the back of the store when I came in the front. Lol Your card turned out superb and I do like the t-light effect.

    1. I’ve wanted to do one for ages but had never seen one with my own eyes until a fabulous lady called Beverley Parkison sent me one through the mail. It was so wonderful that I still haven’t put it away …. and it inspired me to make one myself.

I still have that card, Beverley, on the little side table next to where I sit, and I put the t-light on regularly and just sit and think about you and how amazingly creative you are.

Love you for the wonderful, everlasting surprise. ~ Cobs. x

Have you been keeping up with the Advent calendar? I realized today that I was way behind. Just so little time and more…more cards to make. Every time I think I’m finished ,,,more people spring to mind. Then we’ve had a birthday too.. Oh my!

        1. I’ve managed to get right up to date with the calendar! Whoo Hoo!!
I had rather too much fun with the bauble smashing; the designing your own snowflake and …. the designing your own Christmas Jumper.(knitted sweater). Aw, I killed so much time on those and even now … I’m still itching to get back to smashing those baubles. I haven’t beaten it yet. Haven’t managed to get through all the levels, so I need LOTS of extra practise on that. LOL

Thank you SO much for it Beverly. It’s exactly what the Doctor would have ordered if he’d have known about it. I’ve had such a miserable time over the past few weeks, with this illness/lurgy which began as (what I thought was) a simple(ish) infection. From that it has made me so very poorly and I’ve found it so difficult to keep up with things. Even my emails .. I’ve got some waiting for replies for about 3 weeks now, which is just terrible.

So this wonderful gift which you gave me, is an absolute joy. I’m loving it. (And recognise where it’s situated too!)
Thank you so much Beverly. I truly love it.
          God Bless you.

            1. Me too. I used to send her Christmas cards every year to people I knew around the world – but after a while I was getting the same cards back so my friends and I all agreed that we wouldn’t send the electronic greetings cards, but instead send an email which we’d written ourselves. So we now just send a few lines, wishing each other good things and generally making each other smile.

But I have to agree with you … if anyone knows how to do it, it’s Jaquie Lawson. There’s something so very quaint, English and just down right heart warming about her artwork. She does it all with such loving care.
Bless your heart for sending it, Beverly. xxx

  5. Really nice card and effect, Cobs! Those battery operated candles are really good – I use them from time to time. I must try to do something like this… or, I should say find the time to try to do something like this! 😀
