Of Summer Memories

Hello!  Happy Wednesday.  Wednesdays are such friendly days.  Even the name:  “Wednesday”  – sounds sort of made up.  Giggly.  Silly.  Like it’s not a real name at all, but one that someone inserted into the middle of the week, just to see how gullible we really are, and how many of us would notice.

And while we’re on that subject .. did you know that the word ‘Gullible’ isn’t in the dictionary?  No .. no it’s not.  Go on… I’ll wait here while you check.  …  …  … … … … .. .. . . . . . . . ..  .  [three minutes passes and I hear footsteps coming back down the hall]  . . . . . .  So,  did you check?   Well those of you who believed me …  and either checked in the dictionary which you keep handy there in the house, or those of you who remembered that you’re on a computer and can ask Mr.Google these things, ….  aw, you GULLIBLE lot!

You do know that the rest of us are all having a giggle now, don’t you?   ahh.. but we love you.

Annnyhoo ...  it’s down to business, and todays business is crafting.

I made a quick card which I titled Summer Memories, and I did this because I’m fed up with Christmas coming all too fast.  At today’s date, (23rd Nov.2016)  we have 4 weeks and 3 days until Christmas day arrives.  FOUR WEEKS AND 3 DAYS.  ARRRRGH!!!

It feels like it was only a couple of weeks ago that I was wearing shorts to craft in.  Now I’m wearing my ultra warm jogging pants and a warm top and even, sometimes, a scarf around my neck!  What the DIVIL is going on here people?

So to do something which was totally opposite of Christmas…  I made a little card of Summer Memories.

summer-memories-2

I began this card by giving the glass in the door some dimension by using Anita’s 3D Clear Gloss over each pane.  But then, when it was finally dry, it still didn’t feel like memories.  So I thought I’d give it a watery sort of effect – like looking into a pond or something like that, so that it wasn’t all quite so sharp and in focus.

summer-memories-3

Once dried, I loved the effect.  It gave you a focus on all the summer bedding plants, but all the other things like the step, door, porch, bricks .. were all in the background, in a sort of soft focus.

I matt and layered the picture then fixed it to the card front, added the title ‘Summer Memories’ onto the bottom of the picture,  and then added four metal corners to draw the eye in towards the photo.  And that’s all there was to it.

summer-memories-1

This card made me think about what my favourite memory of this summer was…  and I came to the decision that it was some poppies which grew in our front garden.  Big, bright and beautiful.  Warm almost sparkling red, and smiling.  When I pulled my car onto the drive I could see them growing against the wall, and I would sit for a moment, smiling at them.  They almost seem to talk to each other in whispers, and I imagined that they had soft, gentle little voices, and one, I imagined, had a lisp. Yes … those Poppies will be my chosen memory to share of Summer just gone.

What about you?  What memory of Summer just gone would you like to share?  Do tell.

Have a wonderful Wednesday.  Don’t get stressed or annoyed.  Just let the day flow over you and keep a pocketful of joy in your heart, which you can dip into all day long.

I hope today brings you a few smiles along the way.  Be nice to each other.

Hello. I'm 'Cobwebs'. I live in a wee little cottage in the South of England, aptly called Cobweb Cottage. This little dwelling really is a cobweb factory. Not inside (well, occasionally) - but outside - flipping heck! This information should give you a clue as to why my blog is called The Art of Cobwebs aka: The Cobweborium Emporium. I've been arty and crafty from a very young age, and although my crafts have sometimes turned a corner and taken me in another direction, I've always crafted in some way, shape or form. One day, in the blink of an eye, life changed somewhat for me and the consequences were many. I had to find a new way of being 'artistic'. Card making; scrap-booking; producing ATC's and ACEO's; needle felting; Polymer clay; painting- but in a more relaxed style than I had before, and sewing, - are all things which I visit, as and when life allows. I've fairy recently become a Textile Artist and am enjoying this new creative outlet very much as it offers me so much scope for letting my imagination run through a grassy field and feel the wind in my hair - (mentally, of course). I love to create. To make things. I truthfully believe that the best gifts in the world are those in which you've given your time, rather than your cash. Thank you so much for visiting. Please visit my blog (link below) and have a look around. I'm sure you'll find something to enjoy, even if it's only a handful of jokes! (yes, seriously - there really are jokes!) Wishing you a truly blessed rest of your day! ~ Cobs. <3

  2. A gorgeous card (as ever). I love all the shine you added – it really brings the picture alive. My favourite summer memory has to be a trip to Pecorama in Devon and seeing the delight on my kids face as they rode on the little railway there. Totally priceless.

Hope your Wednesday going well. Hxx

  4. I’m new to gardening, having lived on Long Island where nothing grew in our yard but moss. The house we bought had a garden, and I was assured all I needed to do was keep the weeds out. Sounded easy. Wasn’t. I had a LOT to learn! This past summer I began to feel I had control of the garden, not the other way around. That, to me, is a most pleasant memory.

    1. Hello Anne.
I know your pain with regard to your garden. When we bought and moved into this litte cottage, the front garden was all concrete slabs, and the back garden was decorative paving all over, with gaps here and there into which the previous owner had concreted stones. We’ve been here 5 years now, and we’re still trying to tame the back garden. (The front has been done for a little while and is really coming along). I think our biggest problem is 3 one hundred feet tall Pine Trees, which are protected trees, so we can’t cut them down. I love them for the birds, squirrels and the pine cones, but I’m not keen on them because nothing grows in this garden. We’ve tried grass, no. The treese suck up all the moisture and leave nothing.

But… I’m not a ‘giver inner’ I SHALL get on top of this darn garden.

Your weeds … I don’t envy you. My Grandma taught me a saying: One year to seed, 7 years to weed. And I think she was right.
Although … I’ve seen some very pretty weeds, and at our last cottage, I actively encouraged one weed to grow because it was such a little darling! Pinky purple flowers and it would have looked so lovely in a posy.

I’m thrilled that you have finally got your garden working for you rather than the other way around. What a wonderful Summer memory to have.
Thank you for visiting Anne, and also thank you for the lovely comment.

  5. I love the effect you have achieved and the card is just perfect! I’m not sure I really remember us having much of a summer this year, did we? But I think my favourite memory would be going for a walk along the seafront with my mum and sister, a week or so after mum had relocated to the coast. It was sunny and warm, the sea was blue and of course we went for a paddle. It’s the law!

    1. We had two weeks of continuous sunshine, then little showers every now and again, which I think made us all think that summer wasn’t very long. Being surrounded by holiday makers all the time here, kind of makes summer last longer than it did when I lived in Middle Earth England. (lol… I’m not really a troll from Middle Earth!)

Ohhh, yes! I remember when your mum re-located and the lamp being outside, and I got all confused and thought that your mum was moving in with you! Yes! Crumbs, that seems ages ago, and yet I know it wasn’t. Is she happy she moved? Settled and everything?

Great memory of you three all paddling in the sea this summer. If that’s the only memory you have of Summery 2016, then it’s a GREAT memory to have.
Thanks for coming Puff. Love seeing you here, muchly. ~ Cobs. x

      1. Yes, you are right. A paddle or two is good enough! Mum loves being by the sea, but retirement is not an easy thing when you have worked well into your 70s! Still some adjustment to be done!! Thanks for asking Xxx

        1. [nodding] Moving house takes adjustment, but leaving everything you’ve known is something different from moving twenty miles away. I know this from my own experience. I still long to go shopping at particular stores I used to frequent. It’s a difficult thing to come to terms with – and I should imagine even more difficult for your mum as she has more years of the place which she’s just left.
Bless her. I hope that everything settles into place really soon, and that she finds herself feeling comfortable and ‘at home’.

  6. Oh I would love to be there right now. Our weather has warmed a bit and rain is in the forecast ( still no rain for 3 mos. now) and everyone is reading for the big feast day. I will be going to my sons’ and he and his wife and I will have a quite day. Just not ready for a hullabloo time . Hang in there Cob…Christmas will get here even if we aren’t “ready” for it. LoL xoxo

    1. Hello Beverly. I was just thinking about you!
I cannot believe you’ve had no rain for three months! Good grief, we’ve had enough rain here over the past week equivalent of 3 months worth! It was absolutely thrashing down the other night. Frightened our one cat, (but she is a bit of a scaredy cat anyway), and made the dog bark it was SO loud on our conservatory roof.

I’m so glad to hear that you’re going to your Son and daughter-in-laws house for Christmas, because I was thinking about what you’d likely do. I just didn’t want you to spend the whole day alone, so I’m comforted to know of your plans. I know that you won’t want to have a ‘gay old time’ as you perhaps normally would have done. You’re still climbing Kilimanjaro, Beverly. Each day, each night. And the night time climbs always seem to be the worst ones.
Know that I’m thinking of you and saying prayers.

You’re absolutely right of course … Christmas will get here even if we aren’t ‘ready’ for it. I think I’m just going to have to relax. As soozyb said in her comment … I am going to try and just breathe and take one day at a time, and simply accomplish one thing a day. I think that should just about get me there.
Thanks for visiting Beverly. I love seeing your name here.
Sending you my love, all the way across the pond, and straight to your house. ~ Cobs. x

  7. Your card reminds me of my wee Nannies door to her place. Although the birds are missing. She was a tiny Scottish woman that is just so dear in my heart. I miss her, well I miss all my family members who have passed. Aw my wee nanny.
I also wanted to mention that everyone gets in a tizzy about Christmas, myself included, and count down the days. Like right now it seems we have plenty of time, but not really. I am trying to get a pair of socks and a couple cowls knitted up for gifts but not sure if I am going to make it in time. The socks or for a size 11 foot, so it seems to be taking forever to get to even turning the heal! Christmas is a time, not to panic, but to celebrate family, precious family and good friends, almost like Thanksgiving to me anyway, to celebrate all the good in the world. Which sometimes is difficult, but there is always something good, always.
I try not to panic about this time of year, but as usual, when thinking about baking, making gifts, craft shows to attend and look at all the wonderful things that have been made and thinking to myself, “I could make that”, I begin to wonder about having enough time. Then the day arrives and then it’s gone and what did we panic about really. I am going to try and just breathe and take one day ata time, accomplish one thing a day and we will all manage to make our deadlines. Anyway Cob, I love your card and the memory it gave me, maybe not about summer, but about my wee Nanny. I thank you. Happy hump day!
I must also tell you that Wednesday just reminds me of the Addams Family daughter, Wednesday. 🙂 Carry on.

    1. Hello Soozyb!
Aww, thank you for sharing the memory of your ‘wee nanny’. I somehow can see her whole house attached to that door in my cards picture.

You’re right, of course, that Christmas isn’t a time that we should be rushing about, but instead just take one day at a time. Relax and just let the day unfold.
I shall take your advice and do as you do… accomplish one thing a day. I’m pretty certain that if I do that, everything will work out perfectly.

I never gave a thought to Wednesday from the Addams Family! Oh how on earth didn’t I think of her! DOH [slaps head with hand]

Thanks for coming for a visit Soozy, and for the lovely comment!

  9. Favorite summer memory……a tea party with the grandkids. (lots of laughing on my part at that tea party) The bear they had invited just did not want to stay upright. (I still wonder what he had in his teacup).
The card is beautiful. Of course I have not seen you ever post a photo of a card that was not beautiful.

    1. Ohhhh… was that the tea party where you were all given a ‘portion’ of left over fries? If so … I remember it fondly! It absolutely tickled the heck out of me .. oh! and Chicken Grandad choking on his [water] tea because he was trying not to laugh!! Awwww I could see the whole thing, like a play, playing inside my brain.

Or .. was this a different Tea Party?

(Laughing at the Bear who’d obviously got a hidden pocket in which he kept his ‘hip flask’ – obviously filled with Gin or Vodka (clear liquid so that no one would notice! He’s clever, that bear!)

Thank you Chicken for visiting and having a coffee with me, and for the lovely comment. Thrilled you like the card.

              1. I showed off the card you sent to me today. I displayed it for Thanksgiving :). I did have to answer the question. “What is a squidge?” I laughed like a maniac and was so happy I could enlighten some more Midwestern Americans! (I was actually quite happy I knew something the 20 something crowd did not!)

                1. I’m grinning from ear to ear… I can actually see those furrowed eyebrows of those present wondering what this barmy woman who sent the card, was on about! LOLOLOL.
I’m going to HAVE to teach you some more of my very own made up words, so that I can infect you a little bit more. It will be ….. (get ready for this one) ….. BRILLIGOG! It means brilliant, but better than brilliant. A few steps up from brilliant. It’s a brilligog word. Try it out. You say it like this: brill -E- gog.
You can use it for all sorts of situations: A chicken produces a HUGE egg … It’s Brilligog! Your Grandbaby comes with a new car/doll/toy which looks fantastic – it could be Brilligog! Christmas day you open up a present from Chicken Grandad and it’s the most amazing present …. It’s BRILLIGOG!

                  You, to me, are brilligog.

I’ll let you get used to that one before I give you another. But .. I warn you.. my son-in-law is now fully infected and walks around saying words of mine which he seemlessly adopted into his life. He found them popping out of his mouth when he never meant to say *that* word, and the word he uses most of all is … brilligog. lol He even uses it at work in his office. Bless his darling heart.

I’m giggling madly here. I bet some of your family will find themselves using this word too. It’s a word which is too brilligog to not use. LOL.

Sending you the most brilligog squidges ever ~ Cobs. x

  10. I love the painting, i wish I had a place like to escape to from the holiday craziness. I agree it comes way too fast! The 3d gloss caught my eye, a little shine and sparkle always makes a place more magical. So much talent!

    1. Not a bit like mine… mine is currently covered in leaves blown off trees at a hundred miles an hour, the day after Mr.Cobs cleared up all the dropped leaves from front, back and side garden with the garden vac. I didn’t know he knew that swear word, which he said through gritted teeth, when he looked out of the window and saw the calling card of the BIG winds which we had!

The gardens look worse now than they did before he cleaned them up! Poor chap. He’ll move on to round two in a couple of days, he says, after he’s certain that the winds have finished with their ‘seek and destroy’ mission!
