The falling leaves drift by my window The falling leaves of red and gold . . .

Well, actually, they’re red, gold, orange and brown .. but I couldn’t think of a song that mentioned all those colours.

I don’t normally do multiple cards at once unless it’s Christmas, but I made these two cards on Saturday  . . .  well now that’s not entirely true.   I almost made two …  but I still had to decide what to do with the pure white card background behind the little girl with the umbrella.   Pure white just didn’t cut it.  So in the end I put in a pale, watery blue sky, and then below it I made it look like that fine, murky, misty, spray, wet you right through rain, so that it would suggest that this really was brolly weather. (brolly – a kind of shortening of word in the UK for Umbrella).

whatever-the-weather-a

The papers used are all from Craftwork Cards.  I think it’s their Rose Heritage Range, if I remember correctly.  (It’s in my craftroom and I don’t want to make the trip across the decking, in the cold, and in my jammies – because the motion sensor lights will come on and that makes me feel like the last act of the night, [X-Factor?] … and like I should do a song, a dance and a bit of tap just to impress the judges It’s pretty paper and in a great variety of prints – which all ‘go’ together well.

The little girl is a stamped image, onto the white Stamping Card (by Clever Cut – aka Stamps Away), then stamped again onto the blue rosy paper and again onto the pink rosey paper.  Her hat and coat are cut from the blue paper.  Her boots and umbrella are cut from the pink paper.  Her scarf is something I added (it wasn’t part of the stamped image) as it kind of added a little movement to the image.

I added a little blue ric-rac ribbon and finished it off with a decorative frame of pink gingham.  (These can be found at The Works (UK only store) – in various sizes and shapes, all very cheaply – normally a pack of 6 totally different ones for around £1.  (sorry to folks outside the UK))

The second card is an Autumn card.  Although Autumn is meant to start at the beginning of September, (here in the UK)  but for me personally it doesn’t really feel like Autumn until October is here.  So when October the 1st arrived on Saturday my mind and heart was instantly switched on to Autumn.

I love the Autumn – the colours, the beautiful skies, the time to get out your warmer clothes and rake the leaves.  Children coming in from playing with little pink noses, as if they’d been pinched.  Hot drinking chocolate.  Snuggly, tucked in and that beautiful moment that it gets too cold in the house so you pop the heating on just to take the chill out of the air.  Yummy!

So … I made an Autumn card.  Not for anyone in particular, just because I wanted to.

last-smile-a

The white scored and folded card is a gently hammered card in a lovely weight.  The dotty card is by Anna Marie Designs.  I stamped a ‘naked tree’ directly onto the card using memento ink pad and then stamped different leaves in different colours onto white stamping card, and then cut all the leaves out and coloured them in different colours.  I added just a few stamped leaves directly to the tree, just to give it a little depth.  The leaves were adhered to the tree using tiny double-sided sticky foam mounts, and I kept four stamped leaf images to one side so that I could use them as a pile of leaves …with one leaf being swept up and away by a gust of wind.

At this point, although I liked the card, it was missing a bit of the magic of Autumn, so I got my selection of WOW glitters out and chose three different colours.  An orange, a brown and a gold, and, using a glue pen with a fine nib, I added the various colours of glitters where I felt they should be.

The sentiment which I stamped onto the card is paler than I would normally have stamped it, but I wanted the tree to be the main event, so stamped the words, which read: Autumn…  the year’s last loveliest smile – in a soft brown.

Both of these cards were based on two cards I’d seen in a magazine quite some time ago.  I loved the originals and kind of stored them to memory.  They popped back into my head last week as I began to think about Autumn, so I scribbled myself a ‘post it note’ and stuck it to my big glass mat on my desk, to remind me to make them at the weekend.  I LOVE post it notes.  I don’t think I would I’d remember anything if it weren’t for post it notes!

So .. we have a new week and a new month  …  not only do I wish you a Happy Monday, I also wish you a Happy October.

Here are some facts about October that you might not know …

  • The Anglo-Saxons called October Winterfylleth, meaning the ‘fullness’ of winter.
  • The Welsh for October is Hydref (originally Hyddfref), a word signifying the lowing of cattle.
  • The ‘October Revolution’ in Russia in 1917 took place in November, but at the time Russians had not yet changed from the Julian calendar.
  • The Hunt For Red October, with Sean Connery, is the only film with ‘October’ in its title ever to win an Oscar (for best sound editing).
  • More US presidents have been born in October than in any other month.
  • October in the UK is the Awareness Month for Lupus, breast cancer, national cyber security and domestic violence.

  • On 1 October 1982, the world’s first CD (Compact Disc) player went on sale. It was developed jointly by Sony, Philips and Polygram.

  • In the US, October is National Pizza Month, Popcorn Month, Pork Month and Sausage Month.

  • October is not mentioned in any Shakespeare play or sonnet.

  • Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on 2 October 1869, in Porbander in western India.
  • On 3 October 1906 the ‘SOS’ signal was established as an International Distress Signal by an agreement made between the British Marconi Society and the German Telefunk organisation at the Berlin Radio Conference. The signal was formally introduced on 1 July 1908.
  • Also on the 3rd October,  in 1990 :  East and West Germany re-united and became one country.

I hope that October came into your home gently, and that as each day of this month comes along, it’s filled with little moments of happiness.

As Anne of Greengables (Anne Shirley)  said:  I’m so glad I live in a world where there are OctobersAnd I amOctober is one of my favourite colours.

Hello. I'm 'Cobwebs'. I live in a wee little cottage in the South of England, aptly called Cobweb Cottage. This little dwelling really is a cobweb factory. Not inside (well, occasionally) - but outside - flipping heck! This information should give you a clue as to why my blog is called The Art of Cobwebs aka: The Cobweborium Emporium. I've been arty and crafty from a very young age, and although my crafts have sometimes turned a corner and taken me in another direction, I've always crafted in some way, shape or form. One day, in the blink of an eye, life changed somewhat for me and the consequences were many. I had to find a new way of being 'artistic'. Card making; scrap-booking; producing ATC's and ACEO's; needle felting; Polymer clay; painting- but in a more relaxed style than I had before, and sewing, - are all things which I visit, as and when life allows. I've fairy recently become a Textile Artist and am enjoying this new creative outlet very much as it offers me so much scope for letting my imagination run through a grassy field and feel the wind in my hair - (mentally, of course). I love to create. To make things. I truthfully believe that the best gifts in the world are those in which you've given your time, rather than your cash. Thank you so much for visiting. Please visit my blog (link below) and have a look around. I'm sure you'll find something to enjoy, even if it's only a handful of jokes! (yes, seriously - there really are jokes!) Wishing you a truly blessed rest of your day! ~ Cobs. <3

    1. Hello Chicken!
It’s so lovely to see you.
Thank you for your beautiful words and for coming to share a coffee with me.
Wherever you are there is always a warm feeling to be found.

Sean Connery … Ohhh yes. I had quite the love affair going with him at one point. (all in my mind of course, but hey, a woman can dream, can’t she? lol)

(in English that reads: Oh no lovely little woman/girl. Chicken Grandpar would have to have a Scottish accent to be Sean Connery – but if you say it like I’ve typed it you’ll get somewhere on the way towards a Scottish accent). 🙂

  3. Lovely cards – I really love the paper piecing on the umbrella card.

Autumn can be so lovely – the leaves changing and the weather getting cooler, warm boots and jumpers.

I was totally enchanted by Anne of Green Gables when I was younger. I have saved all the books……. Hxx

    1. WOW! Me too. If I’d have had a sister she would be the one I’d have chosen for myself.

Yes … Autumn really is lovely. It’s like a gift from … wherever you want it to be from. God. The Universe. Mother Nature. (For me it’s God, but I don’t mind people disagreeing and deciding on somewhere else for themselves.)

It has a certain magic about it. From the colours to the ‘feel’ everything is just so breathtaking.

Thanks for the lovely comment. Love you to pieces.
Hope things are ticking along nicely and that your on schedule for the big day!

        1. Aww poor little soul.

You’re going to get there Hannah. I know you are. I have the greatest faith in your ability to actually pull this off.
If I love your stuff the way I do, then others are going to see it and love it too.
You’ll serve up things which they never dreamed of, and … once it’s gone, it’s gone. So kind of help them along by telling shoppers that you only have ‘one of those’ – so that they don’t wander off and think they can come back and buy it later.

When exactly is the ‘do on the day’? I’m waiting (mentally) to hear about it once it’s all over, done and dusted, and am so excited about it for you.
Sending love, healing squidges to the little one, and a wish for the clocks to s.l.o.w. down during the period that he’s able to go into school, so that you can crack on and get done what needs to be done. ❤ ~ Cobs. x

          1. Thank you Cobs, you have a lot of faith in my abilities. I’m just trying to figure out how I can cope with only a few hours sleep and then I could cram in more craft time 🙂

The craft fair is on the 23rd of October so not long. I’ve had a bit of a tidy round by craft desk tonight (yessssss, I have freed my laptop from under all the beads so my Fimo can come out to play again) and counted up all I have made ready. Fingers crossed, it will be ok. Really hoping my son can go to school a little more next.

Thank you – we all need a Cobs in our life – your kind word lift me up every time I see you have commented. Hannah x

              1. Thank you. I can am pushing forward as best I can. Only two weeks to go so I thought I had better order some display stands. The cat waking me at 6am helped me along. Nothing like getting things done whilst everyone else is still sleeping. Hannah x

  4. I adore the Autumn leaves card mainly because my view across the green these last few days have been mesmerising as the leaves from the horse chestnuts are being to change colour and flutter to the ground, and the little girl with the brolly is just too cute for words, the great hunt for conkers on the green has begun so I’m reading your post listening to shrieks and wonderment’s as toddlers are finding their first ever haul of the fabled conkers, one little one has pockets full of them ~ and she is wearing wellies just like the ones in your card…each Autumn from now will take me back to this moment in time and images of your creations will flood my mind & I’ll think of you 🙂

    1. aww… I’m all wriggly with the whole picture you’ve painted for me. How exquisite! It’s made me remember the young years of my girls lives, when they had little wellies – which never got put away because dirt and mud were always around and always free of charge! lol) and we would go hunting for our first leaf of Autumn, and anything magical which we came upon (like a conker, or a BIG pine cone). I would so love to experience just even an hour of that again.

Thrilled you like the Autumn card. That one is my favourite too. The little girl in the coat … that coat is the very coat that I used on a card a few weeks ago – where I stamped and fussy cut just four coats and put them all on one card. (‘fussy cut’ … I can’t say ‘cut off her head and legs’ because that sounds just too cruel to think about! eeek. lol)

      1. Do you still feel the urge to kick huge piles of leaves every Autumn ?? and as for stamping on frozen puddles in the depth of winter ? that’s a given …of course I don’t look like such a crazy cat lady if Moo is with me 😀

        Liked by 1 person

        1. I don’t have the urge to kick (I fear that a hedgehog may be hiding under a pile of leaves, and wouldn’t want to hurt it).. but I do like to pick up a bundle (with my gloves on because of creepy crawlies [shudder]) … and throw them as high in the air as I can, making it rain leaves. Stamping in frozen puddles … awww now we’re going right back to my childhood and the pavement outside where we lived. Just by the grass verge there were dips in the surface which could keep me happy for a rather long time, stamping and stamping until I made the ice crrrrrrACK! Aw the sheer joy!

I was a really tiny, tiny tot (very light weight at birth – but boy have I made up for that!), so to be able to do something like crack that puddle turned ice was a mahoosive big thing for me to achieve. I can still hear the little squeal I would give when I’d done it.

LOL, you’ve taken me back to being a child again… I’m currently in around year 4-5. Red coat, velvet collar, furry hat, gloves and … what I felt was the height of POSH … my muff.
Aw … what it was to be little and your greatest fun came from a puddle of ice.
          Loving the memories.
          Sending love ~ to P, from C. x

          1. Gosh you were posh, a muff indeed, I had hand knitted mitts ….on a string through my coat so I didn’t loose one LOL
If it was left to my mum she would have had a string between my wellies to slow me down , boy I had to run everywhere …that obsession is long gone!!!

  5. Hello Cobs, loved both these cards, especially the colours, and of course October was the month my Mum was born, and when I think of her, her favourite colour was always peach and oranges, and I think that is the Autumn in her, and you cards remind me so much of her. Lovely words too! x
