Things I’ve learned this week …

Welcome to Cobs weekly confessional about the things I’ve learned this week.. I’m going to dive straight in . . .

I’ve learned (for the millionth time) that I just am not good in hot weather.  I get terse and grumpy.

Hello God, … it’s me again.  I’m here asking for the same thing.  Could you please turn down the heat?  You know that hot weather just makes me grumpy and miserable, so please could you turn down the heat – even just a few degrees would be welcomed.  Thank you ~ Cobs. x

This week I’ve learned that there are some projects that just don’t photograph well, and because of that I can’t blog about them until I learn how to go about getting a decent photo.  [big – s.i.g.h]

I’ve been playing with some mediums which are new to me,  learning and testing them out to see how they perform and what works with them (and what doesn’t).  These products are:  Buff it, by Pinflair;  and Brusho.

brushos-1

Brusho = little pots of amazing Water Colour Ink Crystals (little pots of powders to you and I) which can be used in loads of different ways.

brushos-2

You can sprinkle a very SMALL amount onto some watercolour paper and spraying it with a fine mist spray of water.

brushos-5-sprinkled-sprayed-then-stamped
watercolour Brusho crystals sprinkled then sprayed

You can either then just leave it to do its own thing, or you can move it around by the use of a paintbrush or even picking it up and tipping the paper to make the colours run the way you want them to.

brushos-6-watered-card-crystals-mixed-with-water-on-a-tile-then-dragged-across-paper-then-stamped
Wet water-colour paper, sprinkled with brusho’s then dragged across the card.  The sentiment actually says: Live Every Moment. Laugh Every Day.  Love Beyond Words.  (but I stamped it in the wrong place and you can’t read the final line.  But since these are only ‘playing’ it really didn’t matter.)

brushos-3-painting

You can paint with the Brushoand the colours are wonderful!  Again, you only need to use the tiniest amount. If you add a little to some water, in a spray bottle, you can then use it as a colour spray and add a spray of droplets to your project.

Now onto my second new crafting product..

Buff It is like the most incredible wax that you’ve ever seen  BUT … it’s NOT WAX!  I would guess that a greater majority of readers have a pot or two of wax which we use in our crafting.  But … the problem with these waxes is that they smell to high heff!  Coo do they stink.  It’s Paraffin.   However  Buff it doesn’t smell at all.  You could (if you were crazy) pour a whole tub of Buff it onto your project and still not have to fling the doors open in order to get fresh air so that you don’t collapse.  Again, this is another product which you only need a tiny amount of.

buff-it-1

buff-it-2

You can use it ‘as is’ … or you can add a little water to it.  A LITTLE water.  It dries quickly – so remember to take out what you need, then close the lid!  Work a little quickly with it, but if it dries out too quickly you can use a fine mister spray and add just a tiny bit of water, and it’s ready to go again!

brushos-and-buff-it
Brusho and Buff it used together.  That’s the most incredible Gold colour not sunflower yellow as it looks in this photo.  I so wish I could have got a better photo.  Mr. Cobs saw this at this stage in the making and (in his words):  Wow, it looks like the Cosmos!  And I have to agree that when you see it with the naked eye, it actually does!

But … some of the projects I tried with these two wonderful craft magicals, just don’t show the real beauty which you can achieve with the products.  You can ‘see the things’ … but the camera just doesn’t pick up the magic.

Moving on …  Question for you:  When is a Sapphire not a Sapphire?  ……. [I’ll let you think about that one for a moment] ……

….. [still thinking?  —  Ready to give in?  …  ok, read on] . . .

I’ve learnt that . . . Sapphires and Rubies  . . .   are  . . .   the  same  Gem!

I know!  Surprised me, I’m telling you!

Collectively Sapphires and Rubies are known as Corundum.  Their only difference is their colour!

Also … Sapphires don’t just come in blue.  Natural Sapphires can be found in pink,  white,  yellow,  green,  orange,  brown,  cognac,  black and purple!  (Did you know that you could get Sapphires in all these colours? It was a real eye opener to me.)  BUT …  Not only that …

Very rarely but . . . Sapphires can change colour.  Colour Change Sapphires will typically  be blue to violet in daylight, but will look purple to red indoors.

And a RARE PHENOMENON found in Sapphires is asterism.  This is where a gemstone exhibits special optical phenomena.  A six (or very rarely a twelve) pointed star will appear on the surface of the gem, that will move as the stone moves in the light.

And finally …

I’ve learned this week …. that you don’t have to be using paper to get a paper cut, and neither do you need to be in your craft room!

Out shopping I wanted to feel the softness of a bathroom ‘rug’ (a mat for when you clamber out of the shower) – so with finger and thumb I kind of ‘pinched’ the mat so that I could get a feel for it.  But …  (be honest, you knew there was a ‘but’ didn’t you) …  in ‘pinching’ the bathroom mat, I lifted my other fingers out-of-the-way.  Now that seems like a safe enough thing to do doesn’t it?  [shakes head]  nope.  It most certainly isn’t!

The bathroom mat had a large piece of folded card over the top of it,  where a hanger was for hanging the mat up for display purposes.  In feeling the rug/mat,  I caught my middle finger (left hand) on the really thick card, and instantly felt the pain.  I looked down at my finger to see a gash with blood gently pumping out of it.

Now  come on!  Who would have thought that you could get a right ol’ paper cut from thick and chunky piece of card??  I could not believe it.

Mr. Cobs didn’t, in my opinion, take this injury at all seriously.  Do you know what he did when I showed him my life threatening injury?   He peered at my bloodied finger, pursed his lips, looked at me, made a ‘huhm’ sound, turned to walk off and as he did so he said:  “Well you won’t be doing that again, will you!

I stopped in my tracks,  mouth agape, eyes as wide as saucers, … I called after him:  “You do know that you can be replaced, don’t you?” …  he ignored me totally, and  from the shaking of his shoulders  I could tell he was laughing at me.  The cheek of the man!

The thing is …  he knows I won’t ‘replace’ him because,  quite frankly,  I couldn’t bear to go through all that training again.  The man couldn’t boil an egg until I whipped him into shape.  He can now cook a complete Christmas dinner with very little input from me.  He’s amazing.  But look .. if you see him, please don’t tell him I said this because he’ll only get high with delight and strut around like a rooster in a hen-house!

Well that’s me done and dusted and now it’s over to you.  What have you learned this week?   Do share …  not because I’m nosey … but because … no…  actually … it’s because I’m nosey.  So do share what you’ve learned this week via a comment in the box below ….  and none of us will judge you.  We might laugh at you … or we might cry with you.  But we’ll certainly make you feel welcome.

Ohhhhh… I think The Lord may have heard my request because the rumbling of thunder can be heard.  Maybe he’s going to cool it down by watering his garden.  Oh my goodness  … BIG thunder and crashing lightning!   Ooo.. the lights have all dimmed, the TV has lost its signal ….  awwwand the dog has come to sit on my feet as apparently I’m her best hope if something bad happens.  I’m going to get this post saved and posted before I lose the computer too!  eeek!

Wishing you a very happy Friday, and a wonderful weekend.  May your troubles be few and your happiness be high.

Oh ..  and …  be nice to each other.  Sending you squidges ~

Author: The Art of Cobwebs - aka:- thecobweboriumemporium

Hello. I'm 'Cobwebs'. I live in a wee little cottage in the South of England, aptly called Cobweb Cottage. This little dwelling really is a cobweb factory. Not inside (well, occasionally) - but outside - flipping heck! This information should give you a clue as to why my blog is called The Art of Cobwebs aka: The Cobweborium Emporium. I've been arty and crafty from a very young age, and although my crafts have sometimes turned a corner and taken me in another direction, I've always crafted in some way, shape or form. One day, in the blink of an eye, life changed somewhat for me and the consequences were many. I had to find a new way of being 'artistic'. Card making; scrap-booking; producing ATC's and ACEO's; needle felting; Polymer clay; painting- but in a more relaxed style than I had before, and sewing, - are all things which I visit, as and when life allows. I've fairy recently become a Textile Artist and am enjoying this new creative outlet very much as it offers me so much scope for letting my imagination run through a grassy field and feel the wind in my hair - (mentally, of course). I love to create. To make things. I truthfully believe that the best gifts in the world are those in which you've given your time, rather than your cash. Thank you so much for visiting. Please visit my blog (link below) and have a look around. I'm sure you'll find something to enjoy, even if it's only a handful of jokes! (yes, seriously - there really are jokes!) Wishing you a truly blessed rest of your day! ~ Cobs. <3

  1. I have learned that I really need you to live in the same country as me, preferably right down the road so I could learn your crafting secrets.
I have also learned that I think our husbands may have been twins separated at birth or there was some cosmic shift that gave them the same sense of the way to deal with an injured wife who may or may not be bleeding to death from a paper cut.

    1. Hello Chicken
You see … you totally understand the desperate urgency of a life or death situation when there is a serious injury such as … a paper cut. (lol)

Yes, Mr. Cobs and Mr. Chicken must have been separated at birth. Probably because the doctors present at the birth knew that one mother couldn’t possibly cope with two like them eh? lol.

Love you to pieces Chicken… you and I, I think, two peas in a pod – and that makes me feel grrrreat! I finally got baby sister I asked Santa for.

    1. Hello Rabbitpatch, .. aw it’s fabulous to see you here. That little rabbit in your picture brings such a warm smile with it.
I too was surprised about the Sapphires! I never knew that Rubies and Sapphires were actually the same gem!

Thank you so much for coming and sharing a coffee with me Rabbitpatch. It’s such a heart warming treat to see you.

  2. I have learnt this week that Mr. Cobs, beloved dh of my friend Cobs is unsympathetic in times of life threatening finger injuries. However, he has got a shed full of goodies that can be used for crafting! he he 🙂 That’s interesting about the sapphires. Lovely work with the brushos. Going to check out the buff it. I have used the smelly wax for years. To be honest I have had one tiny, tiny pot for well over 25 years!!! I originally bought it for revamping furniture. As you say it is smelly and I have to keep adding turpentine to it to re-moisten it so Buff it looks a great alternative. TFS. Hope the weather cools down for you. Have a lovely weekend.

    1. “Unsympathetic” …. nail on the head! lol

The Brushos I’m still getting used to, but I do like them. They bring something else to the table, and the colours are incredible. (… and you only need the smallest amount to get the results).
Buff-it was a real [delighful] surprise! I have to admit that when I ordered it I did so with my tongue planted firmly in my cheek, and even when they arrived and I opened the pots – I still looked at them with suspicion. However when I took out a piece about the size of a penny (I took it out of the pot with an artists palette knife) and began to play with it, I was totally blown away by the results. Thenand this is something I forgot to say in the blurb, … when you’ve finished and it’s dry, you then polish itI used a dry baby wipethey get EVEN BETTER!

When polished the colours positively GLOW. I actually got goose bumps when I looked at the result. There is, I swear to dog, something magical about these. Alchemy? … A Universal Elixir? … I have no idea what it is, but it’s out of this world. I couldn’t believe that I’d achieved this stunning result on a bit of card, simply using a sponge on a stick ‘brush’ or ‘dobber’ as I call them, and a polish with a dry baby wipe. Oh … and clean up is just water!

I’ll be doing a blog post on these next week, and hopefully I’ll get some better photographs so that you can see what can be achieved.

Thanks for coming and sharing a coffee with me Flo, I love seeing you.

  3. I did learn something earlier this week, but I have forgotten what it was…maybe therefore I have learnt that I am older than I think I am and that I should start carrying a notebook around at all times. BTW those Brushos look really good!

    1. Hello Puff. [,em>grins with delight at seeing her equally good/naughty friend]
Yersss. I got a notebook so that I wouldn’t forget the things I HAVE to remember. And I could never remember where I left the darn notebook.
So .. I bought a pack of 3 (really beautiful) note books. One for the bedroom; one for the living room; and one for the craft room. I thought I’d pinned this remembering thing down.

Obviousy the idea was that when I thought of something I needed to remember, I’d write it down and that way I’d never forget. Doesn’t work like that…

The thing is;- if you’re just dropping off, you don’t want to wake yourself up again by turning on the light, getting note book and pen out, and writing a note to yourself.
Same thing in the craftroom … if I’m stuck up with glue or in the middle of doing something, I tell myself that I’ll write it down when I’ve finished *this*.
Naturally, me being me, I totally forget.

The only place it works is in the living room. Apparently that note book has me held to ransom in that room.

The Brushos: really are rather nice. I’m hoping to get a minute or two to blog about them properly next week. The Buff-it is SHAMAZING! So many things you can do with that. But likewise .. I want to blog and photograph so that everyone can see what I mean before they spend their money, because I want them to be sure about whay they’re buying.
But both are really great products.

  4. STOP !! WAIT !! it’s Friday again already ?? this week I have mostly found out I don’t know what day it is 🙂
As for the gems nope I did not know that ….AND …
As for Mr Cobs, well, well, well, has the man a death wish ?? When Beloved is being ‘trying’ I call him my ‘First Husband’ to keep him on his toes

    1. I KNEW IT! I absolutely knew that we had to be twins, separated at birth.
I too call Mr. Cobs “My first husband”, when introducing him to folks. It just kinda keeps him on his toes. lol.

And yes, it actually is Friday today. I too was shocked when I realised last night, so much so that I had to double check with himself.
SOMEONE is stealing days. I think we need to report this to the po-leece!
You phone. You’re better at this than me.

      1. Phoned the po-leece … who were not helpful in the least, the nice lady they sent round from the behavioural unit was a sweetheart though, she says I can stay as long as I like in the guest room, which is kind of her …I’m not one to judge but her wallpaper isn’t all that ….it’s very thick and sort of padded…is this the new fashion ??

            1. No. Especially when they’ve found my secret bottle of gin which I hide in the cupboard in the kitchen, next to the sink.

Oh. darn. Well now I’m going to have to find a new place to hide it, because I’ve just given the game away.

              Damnit!

  5. I learned that our local My Hermes drivers are not called Pete and that in fact Pete is short for Peterborough. Who knew? I loved reading your post, your experiments look amazing. I’ve heard of brusho but never used it, it’s very commonly used to colour play dough in primary schools! Your use was much more creative. X

    1. Ooo… I didn’t know that about Brusho! Play dough…. hmm… I’m thinking Grandson and making shapes like animals and Batman, spiderman etc.

Actually … no. I remember our girls playing with playdough when they were little. You can’t get the darn stuff out of carpets, not for all the tea in China. No … I won’t do the playdough.

Actually laughed out loud regarding Pete, your MyHermes driver. Did you find out what his name actually is?

      1. Playdough is what got me into trouble with the caretaker. A lot. I often had to do a quick pre hoover before he got there. I still don’t know the name of the Hermes drivers, there are a few, including a lady. How I never twigged before I don’t know! 😂 x

        1. Oh school caretakers! Oh. My. Goodness! There was one from my childrens early schooldays, which even the teachers weren’t particularly fond of. I always held that she ate raw lemons for breakfast. SUCH a continually furious mouth on a very (continually) cross looking face, and her attitude was shocking. But .. on the plus side, she did keep the school clean and in tip top condition.
[shudders at the thought of her though]

Still laughing about My Hermes. LOL C. x

          1. I got on well with ours most of the time luckily. But yes, I’ve come across some grumpy ones too. Ours carried all of my boxes to the car every night when I was pregnant. x

  6. Thank you for your Friday, Things I learned this Week! Who knew those lovely gems were one in the same? Now, to you artwork….Its is beautiful! Everyone of them! I cannot believe you got such a bad paper cut from the rug’s paper! Mr. C. didn’t run to help you 😦 then he chuckles! I think I just pictured this happening. (visual) I do hope the weather is cooperating with you 🙂 xxx

    1. The Rubies and Sapphires .. I know! It was a complete eye opener to me!

Aw thank you for your kind words … but they really were just ‘playing’. I wasn’t taking them seriously, hence some of them not being terribly well finished. I just wanted to test the new products out and see how they behaved. Did they cover, colour well, bleed at all, … and did they do the things I was hoping they would. So just testing them. But I’m hoping to do a decent blog post on them within the next week or so, time permitting.

The weather here has turned cooler, and boy what a blessing it is. There was a wonderful breeze blowing today and I could tell that our cats were so much happier, and the dog too. She wasn’t panting and puffing after she came back from her walks.
I’m so grateful for the cooler weather. Hot weather just doesn’t suit me at all.

Thanks for coming Ruthie. Love, love love seeing you here.

Hope the paper cut is healing. Tut tut Mr Cobs – no sympathy lol.

What have I learned this week – 8 year old birthday parties are hard work even when it’s only 2 girls – as I write I am listening to hyper active nail painting whilst being accompanied by One Direction and Katy Perry! Hannah xx

    1. Two things:-
      A) … what time is the doctor calling round to you your ‘happy pills’?

      and…

      B) … what time shall I mix you a cocktail? (and how big? Glass? Tumbler? Bucket?)

I’m breathless and I’m only reading about it!
I remember these parties when my girls were little. I loved the planning, liked the getting it all ready. Enjoyed it when it all began, for about the first five to seven minutes and then it went down hill fast from that point.

I realised at that point in my life that I needed to do training for these events. I really wasn’t equiped for little girl birthday parties. I thought I was, because, after all, I’m a girl, but … no. I now know that if I had children at this age, I’m pretty sure I’d scrimp and save for a party planner (and staff) to do all the work, and it would be held anywhere but in the house. While I was off enjoying myself at the party, I’d book to have my house cleaned from top to bottom (including oven and glass doors in the shower because I hate those) so that when I came home I’d be the happiest mummy in the whole widey world.

This is all pie in the sky dreaming, because you and I know that when you’ve got children there is no spare money which would pay for all this to be done. But hey … girls can dream, can’t we?! lol
Sending you heaps of love. Keep smiling mommy, it will all be over and all the back breaking work will be a distant memory in a couple of days time. ~ Cobs. x

I’d love a cleaner so I could Swan around my spotless home pretending I’m some kind of domestic goddess – the reality is far from the that but I can dream. Off to repair a toy drill.

Don’t get me wrong… I loved having my two young girls, and enjoyed their formatives years big time. But .. I really couldn’t do all that exhaustion and being so SO tired that I felt my body was going to give up. Ohhhh yes … I remember it well.

A great big bucket of cocktail is ready and waiting … sat on ice, to keep it cool.

  8. Hello Cobs….sorry I’m a little late to class, it has been such a busy time! What have I learnt this week? Well I haven’t murdered anyone yet, so that must be good considering, but I did go on my yearly card making class, and the girls there weren’t very happy with the lady taking the class, and they were asking me to show them, which I gladly did and thoroughly enjoyed helping them. Then they went and said to me…..”we would love it if you would take a class, you really explain things well”. Now years ago I trained in doctors surgeries all over the country and loved helping people learn. It isn’t the first time either that I have been asked this, so I am looking into something that no one else seems to do. If I could get this going and make a little money, maybe I could earn a living out of what I love, instead of what I loath….wouldn’t that be a bonus! First though Cobs, did you make it through the Thor period? 🙂 I am very interested in that Buff It stuff, like you I end up running away from the craft room with other waxes and my fingers are worn with all that work to get it on the paper. This looks amazing! Hugs Kim x

    1. The Thor period – yes I made it, but boy oh boy was I scared! The thunder was right over-head and the lightning … even though you kind of knew that it was coming .. KERACK … it was BIG and it was SCAREY.

The Buff It … is brilliant. I was hoping to do a blog post about it this week but one thing led to another and time ran away from me, so it will have to be next week.

Your plans for a career in crafting … oooOOOoooo! That sounds like a dream come true. Do keep us posted on how you get along, as you’re actually getting along the pathway to opening the doors and welcoming one and all in.
      It’s all SO exciting!
