Things I’ve Learned this Week

Well, looky here!  It’s Friday again, and we all know what Friday means ….  it means that you come to school to learn all the valuable life gems that I’ve learned this week (whether I wanted to or not) so that you don’t have to!  (It’s my personal kindness to society.  I learn all this stuff and just tell you about it so that you’re warned!). lol

So … what have I learned this week?

magnum

I’ve learned:  That I shouldn’t eat Magnum Ice Creams  . .  because

chocolate-2

. . . .  the Gods of Ice Cream and Chocolate all get together and have an absolutely bally hilarious time laughing at me as tiny bits of the chocolate covering drop off the ice cream lolly, straight onto my top;  my decolletage;   or, if they manage to actually get past my chest, straight onto my lap.  And … sometimes all three!  I end up looking like I can’t feed myself and need a carer to assist!

chocolate-1

I’ve learned:  That a silhouette isn’t just the title of an image of a person, or dog, tree, building etc.,  that you can only see in a solid colour – normally black, grey or brown (but I’ve seen them in other colours).

silhouette-1

In actual fact Silhouette is the name of a French Minister of Finance, way back in the 1700’s.

silhouette-2

Etienne de Silhouette (French Minister of Finance) put up taxes massively for the French upper classes,  during the seven years war.  Because of these high taxes,  paintings (a favourite of the upper classes)  were way too costly (and there were no cameras around during that time – surprising as that might sound),  so they came up with a very cost-effective way to have ‘pictures’ of their loved ones,  family, friends and pets.  They had picture cut outs of them instead of paying a ludicrous amount for a painting.

silhouette-3Having a talented artist cut out your daughter/son, dog, mother etc, out of paper,  was an exceptionally cheap way of getting around the taxes put on paintings.

So because of this ‘high tax’ time in France, anything that could be made cheaply was always linked to Etienne de Silhouette, however the little paper cut outs have retained the name Silhouette to this day and it’s known all around the world.

The final thing I’ve learned this week  . . .  is that when I see something (craft related) which I instantly fall in love with,  but I tell myself that the set is too expensive;  –  and  besides which:  what if I don’t use them enough to get my monies worth out of them?;  –  and … well,  surely I have enough things in my amazing craft room that I really shouldn’t be buying anymore ?. . . .

kick-the-can

I’ve learnt that I should bally well ignore myself and my guilt conscience and purchase the very things I so desperately want when they’re available – and before they’ve sold out. The promised new supply of said things (I was notified by the craft store) would be here in … July. No ..  August.   No ..September …  and then when the date in September rolls around and you call the company up, with your bank card clutched in your grubby little fist … the company say that “the suppliers are really messing around and only half of the stock has turned up from over-seas!” …  AND THE MOST WANTED THINGS OUT  OF ALL THE THINGS I WAS GOING TO BUY,  ISN’T EVEN BEING MADE AT THE MOMENT BY COUTURE CREATIONS (in Australia) YES, STAND UP AND OWN THE SHAME THAT COMPANY!

grrrrr

And the craft store where I was going to buy them from has said that they’re actually not really very sure if the company  (Couture Creations) will even put them through for making them again as they were originally out (in Aus) in the very early part of this year so to Cout.Crea., they’re kind of ‘old stock’ and they may be moving on to a new range now. (These products [dies, papers, embossing folders, chipboard decorations etc]  only came to the UK around the early part of June, and then at that time they were only available from Create & Craft.)

darn-it

I nearly cried when I got off the phone today. It made me cross and miserable,  I think simply because I was getting so excited as the day drew nearer for me to be able to buy them.  I’m now faced with either doing without;   buying them from an eBay seller in Australia (at a higher price and then add the postal charges for posting to the UK);  or … buying a set of these from Create and Craft at a higher price than I could have paid if I’d just have bought a whole bloomin’ lot at the beginning when they were on a Special Offer price.  [sigh]

Ahh [sigh] we live and learn, we live and learn.   Time for more chocolate I think.

chocolate-3

Well …  I don’t know about you, but I’ve had trouble with my days all week.  I thought Tuesday was Monday – all day I kept saying that it was Monday. I’d gone back a day!

But then …  I thought Wednesday was Thursday – so I went forward a day.

And yesterday I thought Thursday was today, Friday,  and I began to panic that I hadn’t got various things done and had run out of time!

Something is wrong with the wiring in my brain It’s shorting somewhere.  Either that … or I’m a dope.  Hmmmm … [thinks for a moment  . . . .]   Yes, I agree with you.  I’m definitely a dope.  Hang on, hang on a cotton pickin’ minute  …  what’s all this talk about a BRAIN?  I’m getting rather ahead of myself here, aren’t I?!   I don’t have ‘a brain’.   I have …  A BRAIN CELLThat, dear reader, is a very different thing altogether!

new-ron

Ahhh, life could be so much more simple if I just listened to my brain cell.  But I insist on confusing it and making it feel like I expect more from it.  Poor New Ron.

Aw look …  Have a wonderful weekend my friends.  If trouble comes a calling, don’t answer the door. Decide to have a great day, each morning you wake up.  It’s as simple as that.  Two choices.  Decide or have:  A)  a good day.  – or – B)  a bad day.  I know which one I’m going to choose. …  well, New Ron does.  lol

Sending my grandest of squidges to you.  Be nice to each other.

Author: The Art of Cobwebs - aka:- thecobweboriumemporium

Hello. I'm 'Cobwebs'. I live in a wee little cottage in the South of England, aptly called Cobweb Cottage. This little dwelling really is a cobweb factory. Not inside (well, occasionally) - but outside - flipping heck! This information should give you a clue as to why my blog is called The Art of Cobwebs aka: The Cobweborium Emporium. I've been arty and crafty from a very young age, and although my crafts have sometimes turned a corner and taken me in another direction, I've always crafted in some way, shape or form. One day, in the blink of an eye, life changed somewhat for me and the consequences were many. I had to find a new way of being 'artistic'. Card making; scrap-booking; producing ATC's and ACEO's; needle felting; Polymer clay; painting- but in a more relaxed style than I had before, and sewing, - are all things which I visit, as and when life allows. I've fairy recently become a Textile Artist and am enjoying this new creative outlet very much as it offers me so much scope for letting my imagination run through a grassy field and feel the wind in my hair - (mentally, of course). I love to create. To make things. I truthfully believe that the best gifts in the world are those in which you've given your time, rather than your cash. Thank you so much for visiting. Please visit my blog (link below) and have a look around. I'm sure you'll find something to enjoy, even if it's only a handful of jokes! (yes, seriously - there really are jokes!) Wishing you a truly blessed rest of your day! ~ Cobs. <3

  1. Awesome Friday post! Hope New Ron behaves and does as he is told so you can crack on with all the things you want to do. Definitely true about choosing good or bad days-today I have no work from the agency so rather than moping I’m going to get some bits together to sell on eBay, finish my blog post that I fell asleep writing last night and hopefully do some sewing (until school pick up time!) Have a lovely Friday x

  2. If it’s any consolation Beloved always knows what I’ve eaten or where I’ve been sat while eating due to the rogue food particles I’m wearing / sat amongst !!
Gosh I feel your pain on NEEDING craft supplies only to be messed about BIG TIME, don’t some companies know these seemingly insignificant products are a of major life changing importance to crafters !!! obviously not or they would offer medical assistance when said products are not within our grasp.
I’m not here to judge your ‘New Ron’ ~ simply because my one candle watt cerebrum can only process one thought at a time ..and you mentioned chocolate …………………

    1. *LAUGHING LIKE A DRAIN* … ohhh Thank Dog that there’s someone out there who can also be distracted by the mention of what should be a classified drug!

Ever been to Cadbury World? If not … WHY??? (I haven’t been since those other chaps took it over so I can’t vouch for what it’s like now mind. Chocolate version of Disney world possible.)

I truly was filled with 5 minutes of annoyed misery when I heard that Couture had messed around not just one UK stockist but all of them.
Mr.Cobs felt so sorry for me that he said he’d take the hit and buy them… but then guilt comes into play again and although I want them … [sigh]

Food … it seems that I drop things down me that I shouldn’t be eating. You know … the naughty thing. Chocolate. Cake. Puddings. That sort of thing. Then … someone knocks the door and himself is nowhere to be seen, so I end up having to answer the door with the contents of my guilty pleasure showing clearly on my chest, and around my mouth, or on my fingers and I end up sucking those trying to get the melted chocolate off before I can accept the parcel. This is NOT one of my most attractive moments in life.

And why is it that I never spoil my ‘play t-shirts’ but my best ones mark and stain at the meerest mention of chocolate? What’s with that?

Oh dear, I’m feeling a little discombobulated with all this thinking. I’d better go and find a Kit-Kat to invigorate New Ron into working again!

      1. Think yourself lucky as I have no decolletage as such to catch any rogue food droppings, I end up with them stuck to my knees …try explaining that to the parcel guy !!
Beloved has rebuffed my ideas of attending Cadbury World mainly due to the fact he believes we already part own the company due to the amount of money I have ploughed into their consumables. He obviously hasn’t seen how much I spend on cheese 🙂

        1. Hmm… cheese and chocolate. I haven’t tried these together but I’m told (by someone who has) that it can be rather “life enhancing”. Since my friend is a wind up artist of the first degree I’m not going to plunge in and try it. But if you do – let me know!

Beloved is a party pooper. I went to Cadbury world when I was about five, and I absolutely LOVED it. I came away knowing that THAT was the job I was going to do when I grew up. At that time, (with no ‘Health and Safety’ in existence, when you were taken around the factory (in groups of about 10/15ish) you really were seeing the ladies in hairnets actually making chocolates which were going into boxes. I remember one of the ladies giving me a chocolate she’d just dipped. Ohh Heavenly!

We went again when we had daughter number 1, – she was around 4, and it had changed so much. Health and Safety had stopped the tours I remembered, but they’d replaced them with a different sort of tour. Again, I loved it.

Went with daughter number 2 when she was about 8/9 years old and again, big changes to be found, and some WONDROUS little cars shaped like (and coloured exactly the same as) Cadbury Cream Eggs! They would drive around the site. It was just the most giggly thing to watch them moving. We also got to sample different stages of chocolate, from when it was originally a spiced chocolate drink right the way through to proper chocolate as it was made then. And finally … right at the end of the big journey (say the worlds biggest (real) chocolate bar too! HUGE!) we went through some magical looking doors and found ourselves in my most favourite place of all….. the SHOP – filled with chocolates of every kind, and some new products which hadn’t been released to the public (shops), so we could buy and try them months and months before they appeared in the shops. It was brilligog! But … like I said, this was before the ‘other’ chaps took it over, and I have no idea what the tour is like now. There is a little fear within me that it will be rather erm … well shall we just say, that it won’t be the wonderful British fantasy that it once was.
(I haven’t eaten any Cadbury chocolate since about a year after it was taken over by the other chaps, because I could tell that the recipe had been ‘tinkered’ with. A chocolate button no longer sat on my tongue and melted anymore. It sat on my tongue and grew softer, but went into more of a gel like chocolate flavourish substance. .. and that was unsatisfactory to me, so I jumped ship. [sad, wistful sigh]

Remember this song: ‘Only the crumbliest, flakiest chocolate, tastes like chocolate never tasted before”… well it certainly doesn’t taste like it anymore, I’m tellin’ ya.

          1. I should think by now thanks to H&S no visitors are allowed inside the factory at all, every one is probably just ushered straight to the company shop!!
I haven’t eaten cheese & chocolate at the same time but chocolate & chilli is AWSOME as is chilli vodka but that is a whole different post for me to write LOL
Must dash K9 wants some attention he’s leaning on the computermebob he’ll end up buying something soon !!
            Take care

            1. With the headache I’ve got going this morning, chilli with anything would be a step too far for me. But at other times I’d be game to try it. (Although not the Vodka. I cannot stand the smell of vodka… I know people who love it say it has no smell, but I can smell it and it smells like cheap hairspray to me. eughhhh).

I know that panic of a fur baby buying something. Miss ‘I’m a Princess’ Cat likes to sit on my laptop …. WHEN IT’S OPEN! Verrrry dangerous position. tsk tsk.

Of course there is chocolate ahead for you, New Ron loves chocolate. Just wear a bib. 😉

    1. Aww Salpal … bless your heart. I have no idea if you have this range there, but I’m kind of coming round to the idea of Mr. Cobs buying me the set … I just have to get rid of this guilt thing I get about these things! tsk.

A BIB!! Of course! Why didn’t I think of that!
I think perhaps a large bath towel would be a great option considering. LOL.

  4. A Fabulous Friday post! Oh, please….you are not alone with trailing evidence of what I am eating! I must sit at the table 🙂 lol It is a sad time when the craft company doesn’t comply, there should be repercusions for their mistake! Now on to New Ron! I love it! As today, started early…excercise :), food shopping, ( I just went to my co-op last night) , cut the grass and a friend is coming over for lunch during her lunch our 🙂 The weekend will be wonderful too, wishing you a wonderful weekend as well! 1. You got up early and …you …. EXERCISED?

PEOPLE GATHER AROUND, WE HAVE AN EXAMPLE TO US ALL. Someone get her some cake and a bowl of ice-cream. She needs calming down because she’s obviously got too excited and is doing things which our parents and grandparents didn’t do when they were our age.

Actually, joking apart … I honestly don’t think my parents and grandparents exercised as in ‘exercise’ – running, skipping, exercise classes. Maybe it’s because they were so busy back then. There weren’t the same ‘gadgets’ available so they had to do the washing by hand, or in one of those machines which were a lot of hard work. I remember my mother huffing and puffing trying to get the sheets pulled out of the washing machine when I was young. It was a top loader machine and when it spun my goodness did it spin! The bed sheets ended up like dried cardboard and my mum had a divil of a time trying to ‘unstick’ them from the sides of the drum. It was like watching a one woman war! So perhaps, that was the same as doing half an hours exercise – that and then trying to get those sheets straight so that she could pin them on the washing line.

I 100% agree with the Positive In/Positive Out. We just have to change our ‘thinking’ or outlook.

May you have a truly blessed rest of your day, and weekend Ruthie.

(I think I’ve done a post on the board here somewhere about it. I’ll try to find it, and if I do I’ll pop back and post you a link so you can have a laugh.)

  5. Never knew that about silhouette, Cobs… very interesting. Also quite relevant as I was given the name Etienne when I was at school ‘learning’ French. And chocolate and ice cream – I end up covered in it as well! It’s a must!

    1. Aw see … if a chap is doing the same thing then that just makes everything OK, as far as I’m concerned! Fabulous Tom.

Oh my goodness, you have taken me back to my school days, when we were given French names for our French lessons, and we weren’t allowed to call out our real names at all. Heckaroonie … that could get you sent out of class to stand outside the door for ten minutes.

My French name was: Claire. I felt such a pillock because it didn’t suit me one bit. However … I can still go into a French store and ask for a packet of sweeties: “Bonjour. Puis-je acheter un paquet de bonbons s’il vous plaît ?”
However there’s only so long that you can exist on packets of sweeties before you need some proper food, and sadly I can’t remember how to ask for anything more. (although I think this might be bread: une miche de pain)
      lol.
Thank you for the comment and the visit Tom (Etienne). Great talking to you.

  6. There is an upside to having the chocolate and other food land on your shirt…..when you get really famished (think starving) like an hour or two later you can just lick it off your shirt for a small snack. People might look at you funny so you may want to do this in a secluded place?
And I guess if you are spotted doing that you could just loudly say,
“Quit doing that New Ron!!!” while rocking back and forth gently?
I am not sure that would work those are only suggestions. But if you do try them let me know how it works for you LOL.

  7. Hi Cobs, it’s your twin here lol! You seriously are not alone, I definitely want to re-assure you, that I am 100% with New Ron! I to give myself a darn good talking too when I think I need that said new thing, hummm and rrr and then after a while I find that ‘Yes, I dooo neeed it!’ and low and behold the said urgently needed thing is no more! I have not renewed my membership with Create & Craft, even though they sent emails and even personally called me, but my angel on my shoulder won that fight, and the poor girl on the other end didn’t even argue with me, she just gave in! The powers of persuasion eh? I to agree why do we fight ourselves, there is a higher power that knows better 🙂 x

    1. Aww, I’m glad to have a twin in this darn stupid game I seem to play with myself. It’s all down to GUILT. I blame my upbringing. My mum and all my mums side of the family, were Catholics (or as my Grandma used to make me say: ROMAN Catholics.) lol.
My dad, however, said that he wouldn’t agree to having me (and the elder brother) christened into the Catholic faith, because, he said, that it was too strict. But, he said, if when we grew up and could make decisions for ourselves, if we said that we wanted to become Catholic, then he’d be fine with it. Because of this I used to be (secretly) taken to Catholic Church at every opportunity. So with this ‘background’ comes a big portion of what I believe is commonly called ‘Catholic Guilt’. Guilt plays a HUGE part in my life and because of this I can put myself through 80 shades of why I shouldn’t/can’t/won’t/ought not to …. have this, that, the other or all sorts of other guilts for a multitude of occasions. [s.i.g.h]

Re: Create and Craft. Yes they did that to me too. Called me on a Sunday night (quite late) and tried to talk me into renewing my membership. I told them no. They then phoned me about 4/5 days later and asked me again. I said no.

I did eventually join again, but only because the item I wanted to buy was a high priced item, so I was going to benefit BIG by being a member. But I advise anyone to join first and only then buy the item. Otherwise the update of your membership hasn’t taken place and you don’t get the discount. (Can’t you tell that I was a rooky about 7 years ago and lost out because I didn’t know the ‘deal’ on how to do the membership thing).

Sending big love to my twin. ~ Cobs. x
