Love is like a butterfly, as soft and gentle as a sigh . . .

Follow my blog with Bloglovin

Before I get to talking about card making ….  I’m sorry about the invite above saying: ‘Follow my blog with Bloglovin’ … I had to insert a bit of computer code into a new post order to ‘claim my blog‘. I’m not really sure why I need to claim my blog, but I noticed some other bloggers have done this so, in order to find out what it’s all about, I registered with Bloglovin. Will see what’s so exciting about it.  You can ignore it … you don’t have to click to follow me on there – unless you want to, of course.

There are cards for every sort of occasion and every type of person, (or personality) and I sat for 20 minutes trying to decide on what sort of card I was going to make for a relatives 89th Birthday.  I’ve made her cards  (Birthday, Christmas etc) for a few years, but I felt that she needed something different this year.  Not so fussy, but still with something going on.  Hmm… something with butterflies I think.

I knew I had a little kit which made up two jars of either butterflies or sweeties so I went in search of them among the box of Hunkydory stuffs.  I’d forgotten how pretty they were and the moment I saw them I knew that I’d make her one of these.

In ‘kit’ form this is what you get:kit

The pink jar is the sweet jar, and the blue, as you saw at the head of this post, is the butterfly jar.  But … there’s nothing to say that you can’t mix them up and swap butterflies for sweets.

Now … I have a bit of a problem in making ‘kit cards’.  I ALWAYS feel like I’ve cheated and let the whole crafting community down.  I don’t know why I feel like that, I just do.  But, I know that there very much is a place for kits and also know my relative will love this card.  It’s very ‘her’.

You begin by popping out the ‘front’ central part of the jar, and then cutting some clear acetate  to match the shape of the ‘hole’ in the front of the jar, you then fix that to the inside of the card front.

showing the rear of the card and the acetate fitted and fixed to the front of the jar.

It’s when you get to this point in the making that you need to stop and think about how you’re going to write the card out when it’s made.  Yup… you need to do that now before you fix any of the butterflies into the jar, because once fixed in place, you’ll have a difficult time trying to write on the back of the card.

The reason the card has that 3D effect is because of the roundedness of the front.  And that happens because the front is cut slightly bigger than the back. So once you’ve fixed the butterflies into the inside of the jar you then fix that card (jar) front in place.  If you scroll up to the photo of the unmade kits, you’ll notice that on the one edge of the card front, there’s a little flap.  That little flap allows you to adhere the front to the back … but because the card front is too big it ’rounds out’ and so gives the jar it’s shape.  (The use of craft clamps comes into use for this part).

fluttering-wishes-1

This is the finished card as far as the kit is concerned, however you can then add your own touches to it to make it yours.

I added some deep pink with white dots ribbon ‘ties’ which I made (look like bows but not bows), and a silver metal, dangly charm fixed onto a large white paperclip,   which had a little more of the ribbon looped onto the top of it,  which I attached it to the back of the card so that the charm was dangling down next to the hand-written message.

I totally forgot to take a photo of the extra touches until it was packaged and sealed inside its postal box so you’ll just have to imagine the end result.  [sigh…  I’d be terribly dangerous if I had a brain]

And, as they say, that was it!  VOILA!  It’s an easy to put together card, the majority of the time is taken up with trimming off the little ‘tabs’ from where the die cuts were still attached to the cardstock.  Other than that it’s a simple card to make.  But looks so pretty when made.

As I was putting this card together I kept singing the theme song to a lovely, gentle sitcom, called Butterflies,  which was made and shown on the BBC, here in the UK,  between 1978 to 1983, and if I find it showing now, I’ll actually sit and watch it, just to be reminded of a more gentle time.  The theme tune is the Dolly Parton song Butterflies, but for this programme it was recorded by a singer called Clare Torry, and I think this may have been because Ms Torry had a little softer and more gentle tone to her voice.

It’s only 38 seconds long, so I share it with you here:

If I’ve got an earworm I think I should share it with everyone so that you can have it too.  I was taught that it’s nice to share.  [grins]

Have a beautiful Wednesday, whatever you’re doing.  Thank you for coming and having a coffee with me, I love having your company.

Sending my love,  from here in my corner to you in yours.

Author: The Art of Cobwebs - aka:- thecobweboriumemporium

Hello. I'm 'Cobwebs'. I live in a wee little cottage in the South of England, aptly called Cobweb Cottage. This little dwelling really is a cobweb factory. Not inside (well, occasionally) - but outside - flipping heck! This information should give you a clue as to why my blog is called The Art of Cobwebs aka: The Cobweborium Emporium. I've been arty and crafty from a very young age, and although my crafts have sometimes turned a corner and taken me in another direction, I've always crafted in some way, shape or form. One day, in the blink of an eye, life changed somewhat for me and the consequences were many. I had to find a new way of being 'artistic'. Card making; scrap-booking; producing ATC's and ACEO's; needle felting; Polymer clay; painting- but in a more relaxed style than I had before, and sewing, - are all things which I visit, as and when life allows. I've fairy recently become a Textile Artist and am enjoying this new creative outlet very much as it offers me so much scope for letting my imagination run through a grassy field and feel the wind in my hair - (mentally, of course). I love to create. To make things. I truthfully believe that the best gifts in the world are those in which you've given your time, rather than your cash. Thank you so much for visiting. Please visit my blog (link below) and have a look around. I'm sure you'll find something to enjoy, even if it's only a handful of jokes! (yes, seriously - there really are jokes!) Wishing you a truly blessed rest of your day! ~ Cobs. <3

  1. Oh I really love butterflies. I’m with you on the kits, but some them are so stinking cute you just have to do them. Your turned out really nice even better than a shaker card don’t your think, It’s a binder card. Lol beverly

    1. Hello Beverly, fellow crafter and fabulous friend.
Yes, like you, I love butterflies too. There don’t seem to be as many, or the variety of different, butterflies as when I was young, and I find that a little concerning and rather sad. I see plenty of

I loved how easy this was to make – and I’ve given it a little thought and I believe that, if I took the remaining ‘jar’ and, in it’s un-made state, drew around it, I’d then have a template and could make ‘jar’ out of any of my plain or patterened cardstocks. Win!

I’ve never heard that term before – ‘a binder card’ – so I went to the font of all knowledge, Mr. Google, .. and he was worse than useless. I’m guessing that it might mean a card which could be stored, un-made up, in a binder (or folder) until you need it, and then made up when you do!
Feel free to tell me I’m a dope and totally wrong! lol and tell me what it really is. 🙂

It’s such a joy to see you Beverly. Always has been, always will be.
Praying for you my beautiful friend(many times a day), and …

    1. Aw glad you like the ‘Jar’. I think my relative really is going to love it.

Bloglovin … I’m not entirely certain that I need it, but then, I don’t know enough about it to say yes or no, so I’ve joined just to learn (basically) what it’s all about and why people seem to love it since SOooo many of them are there. To my uninformed brain it’s just another bit of ‘time wasting’, but my sensible brain cell is telling me there has to be something ‘wonderful’ to it otherwise all these other folks wouldn’t have bothered.

Ah, time will tell. Are you a member of it? (‘it’ = Bloglovin)

  3. Gorgeous card Cobs. Beautifully made. I agree with you there is definitely room for kits in card making. Some times its nice not to get all inky and messy. I have the song singing in my head now 🙂 Such a great show. Remember that little Union Jack mini she drove around in.
    Take care, Flo x

    1. Hello Florence. 🙂
Great to see you. You always bring the sunshine with you. I think it’s your smile.

I’m so glad that you agree about the ‘room for kit cards’ in card making. And yes, agree, it was so, so lovely not to have an enormous clean up job from messing with inks and sprays.

I actually had a little giggle when I read that you were now singing the Butterflies theme song. lol. (sorry about that).

Ohhhh… the car! Yes, I remember the mini and … I have always longed for that mini! Or one which looks like it. There’s one I’ve seen around Dorset (where I live) which is the same. I’ve seen it parked at Tesco’s and outside Laura Ashley, and each time I’ve stood looking at it longingly. I know that it’s totally unsuitable for me, but the longing has never gone away.

Thanks for sharing a coffee with me Flo. I love to see you. ~ Cobs. x

    1. Hello Ruthie. Happy Wednesday!
Like you, I love butterflies too. They’re such happy little creatures and I’m sure that I can hear them saying, as they flutter up and down over my garden … “I’m Alive, I’m alive, I’m alive!” – giggling with joy, fluttering very excitedly, and filled with wonderment and happy bubbles.

Thank you so much for the beautiful comment Ruthie.

Yes, we’ll share our journey through the highs and lows of creativity and life in general, here on the web, where we can be ‘contained’. LOLOLOL

  5. The card is gorgeous and doesn’t look like it came from a kit at all, but from a great imagination. Hope your relative has a lovely birthday. I’m just as confused about Bloglovin’. I ‘claimed’ my blog a few months back, basically because I was on Bloglovin’ having a mooch around and my blog came up as a suggestion I might like!! Well of course I flippin’ well like it! Actually I have barely been over to it again since so am no help with tips…

    1. Well I shall seek you out and follow you so that you have an extra follower and everyone will think that with all these poeple following you, you must have something amazing, and they’ll follow you too! (lol)

Thanks for the lovely words on the card. I do feel so guilty about kit made cards, but then on the other hand … there really is a place for them and my relative is a perfect example. I’ve just got to make my mind up on what flowers to send her now. (Always a ready made arrangement so that she doesn’t have to do all the cutting, conditioning and leaf removal, as well as find a suitable vase!) I’m kind of leaning towards roses but … aw there’s too much choice.

  6. The card looks great! I never make kits exactly as instructed, there are always personal touches to make it an individual item. I think you have done that here and your relative will love it.

  7. You have gone and made me feel old! LOL, as I remember watching this occasionally (didn’t realise it was THAT long ago), but the Butterfly jar required a serenade as it is truly a beautiful thing. I do like a nice Hunkydory, must admit! Hugs x Oh PS I flew down to The Range to liberate the Tonic Glue you suggested to the disappointment of not being in stock! I can order it online but will wait until I have a big enough order…shouldn’t be tooooo long (Apparently I have shares in the company according to my other half!) 🙂 x

    1. Absolutely laughing my head off… because Mr. Cobs says the very same thing about me. However, when we get there he continually picks things up which I probably wouldn’t have noticed, saying “Have you seen these?” … which is just fatal because I then fall in love with said *thing* and need to put it in the basket! Of course I end up spending far more than the five or six pounds I was originally going to spend. (I blame him. It’s his fault. Well that’s my story and I’m sticking to it) lol.

I’m so in love with this Tonic Glue that I’m getting a couple of bottles next time I go to The Range so that I won’t run out!

With regard to Butterflies … when I looked up when the programme was aired, I had to double check it. I seriously didn’t think it could possibly be that long ago because … well let’s face it, I’m not THAT old.

      Apparently …. I am.
I made need a gin and tonic to get over this. That or a therapist.

Thanks for the smiles Kim. Love it when you visit, you bring such a girlish humour with you and it tickles me in just the right place. We’re like Two Peas in a Pod – giggling together.

  8. We certainly are, because my other half does exactly the same, and says things like ‘Is this the new Spell thingy die you like? No, thought you said that you needed something like this? You do, oh alright then I’ll get it for you!’…..and I’m the one that has shares! Cheek! Love him, he does try to help, but also spends my money worse than me, as he too, picks up all the things I try so hard NOT to notice! Hugs x
